State bus fares hiked by 29 per cent
‘Additional revenue will tide over crisis’
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, February 1
The bus fares have been increased to the tune of 29 per cent after a gap of two years by the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC). This has given a big jolt to commuters of the state. The fares became effective from 12 last night.

Deepak Kumar,General Manager, UTC, said the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation was incurring a loss of Rs 150 cr per annum due to recurrently enhanced petrol/diesel rate and less occupancy in the buses. The current jump in the fare would yield the department a revenue of Rs 2 crore to Rs 2.5 crore per month.

The corporation has 1157 buses of its own and 30 more hired on a contract basis, which register an average of 70 per cent occupancy throughout the year.

Previous fare in ordinary buses for the plains was 63 paisa per km, which has been increased to 81 paisa per km. Similarly, the fare for ordinary buses has been increased from 92 paise per km to Rs 1.29 paise per km for the hill regions. In another category of hi-tech buses, the fare has jumped from Rs 1.07 to Rs 1.37 for plains and from Rs 1.47 to Rs 1.62 for hills. The computer as well as e-ticketing machines of UTC are being updated with the fresh rates of bus fares.

The management of UTC may heave a sigh of relief with the hike in the fare but commuters are feeling the pinch in their pockets. Shaili Chamoli, a housewife said: “The state government made plenty of announcements to please people before the elections. But just a day after the people cast their votes, the state government stabbed them in the back by increasing the bus fare.”

Pramod Kumar, government employee, said it would have been justified had the UTC increased fares for only hi-tech buses and not the ordinary buses. The bracket of lower, lower middle and middle class was already under immense pressure due to high inflation.

Ayush Sharma, a college student, said the UTC should first improve the poor condition of its ordinary buses before demanding more fares from the citizens.

Elephant scare in Haridwar areas
Sandeep Rawat
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, February 1
For the past few days areas on the outskirts of Haridwar city, particularly those adjacent to the Ganga and near the forest range, are in the grip of elephant scare. Villagers are having sleepless nights and are patrolling during night to ensure that their crops were not damaged by rummaging elephants.

Residents of Missirpur, Katarpur, Panjan Hedi, Ajeetpur, Jagjeetpur, Pathri, Dhanauri, Ferupur, Chandpur, Kota Muradnagar, Telliwala, Bishanpur Kundi, Shyampur and Laldhang villages have complained that elephants are damaging their crops regularly. Elephants can also be seen on the Haridwar-Najeebabad-Kotdwara highway, especially during the winter.

The farmers have suffered huge losses due to damage to their crops by elephants though they were hoping to make a fortune this season.

Many villagers have also complained about elephants seen around their houses and intimidating them when they tried to shoo them(elephants) away.

The Forest Department has taken cognisance of the complaints and set up a special task force to address the problem. Special vigil and night patrolling are being done in the affected villages, particularly early morning and during night when the movement of elephants is more.

Forest official S Sonkar said vigil had been intensified and forest guards were keeping a watch in these affected areas. The villagers had been asked to instantly report to forest officials and guards whenever they see an elephant nearby.

Sonkar, however, admitted that more constructive steps were needed to stop elephants from intruding into fields and residential areas. The construction of walls to block the entry of elephants into residential areas could help control the situation, he added.

MS Negi, Tibdi forest range officer of Rajaji National Park, said they were keeping a close watch in the vulnerable areas and night patrolling was being conducted.

He added anyone seeing elephants in the fields or residential areas should inform the range officials immediately.

Ajeet Saini, a resident of Panjanhedi village, said four elephants were seen on the Lakshar road early this morning and they ravaged crops in the adjacent areas. Later the elephants blocked the road for 10 minutes and left only after sunrise.

Affected villagers have urged the state government to award proper compensation to them for crops damaged by elephants and a permanent solution to the problem.

Thin attendance in DMC office
‘Employees still in poll syndrome’
Seema Sharma
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, February 1
The rooms in Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) premises looked almost empty with very few employees turning for work today. The employees as well as officials are enjoying themselves post election. The councillors’ room was also silent. The mayor was found sitting in his room chatting with a few visitors. However, the employees in the office of the district administration were seen back on their seats. District Magistrate Dileep Jawalkar and Additional District Magistrate Vinod Suman attended to the visitors’ problems.

It is necessary to mention here that all the government employees who were designated election-related duties were given a day off on Tuesday to relax. Therefore, they were expected to resume their work on Wednesday.

The people who came for their problems in DMC had to return back to see most of the employees and officials absent.

Sarita Gupta, housewife, said she had been making rounds of DMC to get the birth certificate of her grandson made but had to go back empty-handed as the employees were busy in their election duties. Today she came with the hope that she would find the employees in the certificate section working as the election was over and would get her work done. But that did not happen. Radhey Shyam, retired government employee, came to get important documents regarding a property dispute he is having with his elder brother. He was also met with disappointment, as the concerned employee had not come to the office.

Taking it lightly, Mayor Vinod Chamoli said it would take some time for the employees and officials to come out of election syndrome and join work. “The employees and officials at DMC were engaged in the election-related work throughout the entire month of January. They want a break before resuming work,” he said.

On the other hand, Dileep Jawalkar, while patting the back of all the returning officers and nodal officers for doing a brilliant job during the elections directed them to get back to their routine work and quicken the pace of the work to resolve the grievances of the people. DMC should certainly learn a lesson from district administration office in this context at least, he added.

Row over college principal’s removal refuses to die down
Yamini S Verma
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, February 1
Even four months after principal of MKP Girls Postgraduate College Dr Indu Singh was sacked the controversy refuses to die down as the college management is unable to explain the reasons behind the drastic action.

The managing committee of the college had levelled allegations of misappropriation of funds against Indu and sacked her in September 2011. Later, the committee handed over the charge of officiating principal of the college to Associate Professor, political science, Kiran Sood. Indu was appointed as principal in 2007.

The secretary of the management committee, Jitender Negi, refused to comment on the issue. He said, “I cannot comment on the issue as it will not be proper for me to make the private affairs of the committee public through newspapers.” “It is an internal matter of the college and its management will deal with it patiently. The committee has constituted a team to look into the matter and the team needs ample time to file its report,” Negi said.

Kiran Sood, officiating principal of MKP Girls PG College, had earlier filed a writ petition in the Uttarakhand High Court in Nainital challenging Indu’s appointment as principal on the ground that her academic record was better than Indu’s.

Later, Indu approached the Supreme Court against her sacking. She also refused to comment on the issue saying, “I don’t want to speak on the issue as the case is in the Supreme Court.”
