Moving beyond talking
In this world of technology, a phone is no longer just a gadget…it is a window to the world
Talk while you walk — a mobile company introduced the catch line, not knowing that the entire world would be ready to implement it with religious dedication! We don't know about 'walking' but we sure have to talk a lot! Given the Ferrari lane lifestyles we are into, we cannot afford to not be on the phone 24X7, in fact it is a 'ginnie' that makes things possible for us as and when we want to. Actor Irrfan Khan in an advertisement suggests women should take the help of the mobile phone to whip up interesting recipies. Well, this is just one bit of it; with mobile companies providing an extra topping of applications, more and more people who virtually are on the job always find it as a measure of connectivity and convenience. We get connected to some of them to find out what applications they prefer the most.
Technology benefits He believes in the present and for him it has an offering called technology, which when used correctly can be beneficial to a great extent. "I use BlackBerry that allows me to use the three applications — the messenger service, the email service and WhatsApp messenger. The email service is used a lot; even when I am traveling, I am connected with my work. I also use the camera, take pictures and connect it with WhatsApp. It is with this application that I file my crime reports. Other than this, another application gives me a daily lowdown on what's happening in the country and elsewhere through the national papers that I have subscribed to. And not to miss the Google maps, which help find locations by formatting the search.
Banking on Face it A mobile phone is an integral part of social life and Priyanka makes the best use of it without going overboard. "I use an I-phone and it goes without saying that it is loaded with features. Email is on the top of the list; all the managerial work is done through it. As I am in the hospitality industry, I have to be connected to people so social networking site Facebook is another application that is used a lot on my phone. I have almost 5,000 people connected with me on Facebook and I answer to all their queries related to Hops n Grains. Camera and the application allowing photo-editing is another application running on my phone. I like taking real-life situational pictures and this helps me a lot. And then there is the 'must have' application that helps in making the grocery list. All I have to do is visit the store, look into it and I am sorted." jasmine@tribunemail.com

Historical notes
"The grandeur of Hindustani classical music is equally relished by music lovers across the borders in Afghanistan; the same repertoire of ragas with text in Persian is sung in original Hindustani taal patterns." Says Kabul-based classical vocalist Ustad Eltaf Husain Sarahang, "We also sing ragas like Bhairavi, Puriya Kalyan, Todi, Malhar; all within the prescribed maryada. The royal rulers not only gave us patronage, but also used to learn from my grandparents."
In Chandigarh for a concert organised by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Pracheen Kala Kendra at Mohali, he shares his thoughts on Indian music making waves the world over. Ustad Eltaf Hussain Sarahang is hailed as one of the outstanding exponents of Patiala Gharana gayaki today. His music has been described as "a wonderful blend of poise, power and purity". The credit of carrying the grandeur of Patiala gharana gayaki to Afghanistan goes to his grandfather Ustad Ghulam Hussain Khan, who added some wonderful dimensions to an already established form of music. Born in Kabul in 1956, he began training at the age of five under the guidance of his grandfather and of his illustrious father Ustad Muhammad Hussain Sarahang, besides Ustad Aashiq Ali Khan, Ustad Amanat Ali and Ustad Fateh Ali Khan of Pakistan. Later Eltaf was sponsored by the Indian Government (ICCR) to receive training from Ustad Abdul Rehman Khan of Mumbai. During this period, Eltaf also received training in sitar from Ustad Abdul Halim Jafar Khan. On completion of his training, Eltaf was appointed as the Royal Musician in the court of King Zahir Shah of Afghanistan. "But the circumstances changed in the war-stricken state, which forced me to build another base in the US and Canada. I plan to establish more centres abroad and one is coming up at Dehradun, Uttarakhand. "Unlike India where there are takers for classical, folk to filmy music, we have our limitations," rues
Eltaf.

The red carpet was rolled out as stars and celebrities walked down to celebrate the greatest and the best in Hindi cinema and television. The ceremony paraded the who's who of the industry. Ranbir Kapoor on winning the Best Actor Award for Rockstar, said “This is my 3rd Apsara Award and actually, I don’t feel humbled because I worked really hard for this role, so I’m very happy that I got the award for it.” On stage, the director duo Farah Khan and Karan Johar brought on their camaraderie and entertained the audience with their wit and humour! King of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan performed on an act to remember around the theme of his latest movie Don 2. He presented a Chicago style act and set the stage ablaze as he grooved to the tunes from the movie. No
Agneepath for children
Sanjay Dutt’s twins will not watch Agneepath as the father finds his character too menacing and the movie very violent to be watched by their innocent and impressionable minds.
His character Kancha Cheena is Devil’s Spawn and the wickedest character he has ever played in his career. The movie is very wicked and violent and definitely not meant for children. Sanjay has asked wife Maanayata to keep their children as far away from the movie as possible. They might get scared watching their Daddy behave like that! Sanjay has said, “Yes, I would really not want my kids to see me in such a character. I have told Maanayata not to show it to them for a long, long time.” His children didn’t recognise him when he returned home with a bald head. Then they got close to him again when they recognised his voice. Sanjay didn’t think he could pull off such a wicked character, just like Rishi Kapoor couldn’t imagine himself playing gangster Rauf Lala. Both of them followed the script and were entirely convincing in their portrayal of their ruthless gangsters. Sanjay even took breaks between dubbing because his character was overwhelming for him.

The year ahead
If your birthday is January 29...
Taking care of your health is essential in 2012. Go ahead and spend a little extra money on a gym membership or some exercising equipment. However, people suffering from hypertension should observe due precautions to avoid stress and aggression. Those who are short-tempered should maintain their calm. Do not get disturbed over small issues. It's all about balance. Keep your focus on your short-term plans and goals. You and your partner have plenty of time to think about the big stuff; right now you'll want to keep things light and easy. A very good year for those engaged in their own business. Your prudence, efficiency and wisdom would be at the peak. Gains are on the cards from almost all the corners. Your mind will invariably be creative and diligent throughout the week. The tasks performed by you would be evaluated in the right context and you would receive appreciation too. You will feel angry with some irresponsible co-workers and this anger will affect your concentration level. The Jupiter advises those born in the 80's to establish the best possible work rhythm. Only then will they be able to obtain the right profit. If you are in doubt, ask someone in the authority for advice. If you take a chance on something entirely new, you may make a big discovery. You must believe that some dreams can come true. Be proud of the distance you travelled. Do not be confused by the knowledge that you have gained on the trip. You need to devote more time at home and with your family. By being away from home most of the time you could be missing out on the pleasures and delight of marriage and romance. Stay cautious from the beginning of February in professional affairs. Mistakes are probable. Youngsters will get motivated to make some money during their spare time. You can now put your plans into action, for success is assured to you. Venus keeps the mood light, with you wanting to spread your romantic horizons. Lots of Aquarian energy could lead someone very unusual your way, putting you in the mood to explore the world through their eyes. Mood: Content and cheerful. Compatible signs: Aquarius, Sagittarius, Aries. Lucky colours: Dark green, brown. Lucky days: Monday. Lucky numbers: 4, 9, 17, 19, 49. Lucky gem: Fluorite. Lucky flower: Flamingo flower.

It will be exactly a year since Star Plus' Nayva was launched. Though the show about youngsters appealed to the audiences garnering a low TRP, the channel has decided to axe it. Soumya Seth aka Navya is baffled yet accepting of the fact and talks her heart out… How did you feel when you heard the news that your show Navya will be ending? I was shocked as it was an unpleasant news. I am just worried about the fans who love the show. Later, I accepted it as the show will end on a happy note. Navya and Anant culminated their love into marriage, which is sweet. Working on Navya was a great learning experience. It has been a blessing. Did you have any inkling that it was going to end? It wasn't a surprise but a shock as the TRPs were fine. Since the launch our TRPs were between two and three, which is quite remarkable. We were consistent and never went down to a zero. But I guess this is a part and parcel of the game and everything has to end someday. How would you summarise your experience in Navya? Navya is me and will always be me. It was my first show and I learnt a lot from my directors, Ravi Bhushan. He trained me and taught me since day one. He worked hard on me and today I am here because of the wonderful experience called Navya. I hope to work with them soon. Do you think the show was able to fully showcase the concept teenagers and youngsters balancing tradition and modern lifestyle? I think the audiences will be able to answer the question better. But I feel we showed the dilemma of teenagers, college-goers who juggle between their desire for freedom and their families. We showed the problems teenagers face and how they handle their families and their wishes. |
