Assembly election candidates continue to strain vocal cords
Dera Bassi, January 21 While addressing meetings at Dera Bassi, Lalru and Zirakpur, he promised to provide special facilities to the poor and farmers of the area. On the other hand, Sarabjit Kaur, wife of late Capt Kanwaljit Singh, said she was contesting the elections to fulfil the dreams of her husband, who had always fought for the cause of the common man. Sanjha Morcha candidate Bhagwant Singh Baltana promised that dashmesh canal would be constructed in the area to fulfil the irrigation water need of farmers. Ambala, January 21 He stated this while addressing members of the Haryana Chamber of Commerce and Industry here today. Sunita Puri, Commissioner, income tax department, Panchkula, Mamta Bansal, Additional Commissioner, Ambala, and Amrik Singh, Deputy Commissioner, income tax, Yamunnagar, were also present on the occasion. The Chief Commissioner said the department was of the view that there should be transparency at every level in the working so that a taxpayer could get the financial information from the department. When asked whether the department had received any complaint against any politician or bureaucrat possessing assets exceeding their legal income, he said no such complaint was received so far. The department would take action if it received any such complaint, he added. Later, while addressing a conference, he asked entrepreneurs and traders to pay income tax honestly and timely as it would be a great contribution to the country. He said the department had to take strict action against those taxpayers who concealed the facts to evade income tax. Satish Gupta, chairman, Haryana Chamber of Commerce, said the tax base should be widened and while introducing any new guidelines, the chamber should be taken into confidence. Rajinder Nath, former president, Haryana Chamber, also raised several issues related to the income tax. General secretary of the state chamber AL Gupta and AD Gandhi, president, Ambala unit, also spoke on the occasion. |
Constable held
Mohali: A constable with the Mohali Police, Madan Lal, was arrested for hurting the religious sentiments of the owner of a restaurant in Phase XI.
The police said Madan refused to pay the bill following which he entered into an argument with the owner of the restaurant, Manjit Singh, and pulled his beard. The constable was under the influence of liquor. A case under Section 295 of the IPC was registered. Rs
47 lakh seized Dera Bassi: The police recovered Rs 47 lakh in cash from four persons during a naka near Haryana border at Handesra. It recovered Rs 5 lakh from one Angrej Singh, Rs 33 lakh was was seized from a Panchkula resident, Indersen son, Rs 2 lakh was recovered from Sujeet Gupta while Rs 7 lakh was seized from Jaibhagwan Sharma. The money was handed over to the income tax
department. Gold chain snatched Panchkula: A gold chain was snatched from an old woman when she was sitting in front of her house here today. The victim, Maya Devi (65), is a resident of Sector 7. The police said the victim was basking under sun when two youths on a motorcycle approached the woman on the pretext of touching her feet and snatched her gold chain. They fled the scene. However, a portion of the chain was saved as it got entangled around the neck of the woman, said the police.

11,000 players in action
Mohali, January 21 Ashish Sethi, CEO, Kandhari Beverage pvt ltd, told media at the PCA Stadium, that the tournament would involve over 200 days of cricketing action spread across a period of 9 months at 65 districts in 8 states and 2 centers, under the aegis of the respective State Cricket Associations. The Coca Cola Cup is the largest Inter-School Cricket championship in India and would involve participation from over 11,000 young cricketers from 700 schools, he added. Punjab leg of the championship would run for the duration of approximately 30 days and it would involve participation from leading U-16 cricket team from the schools in 6 major districts namely Chandigarh, Mohali, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Patiala and in 2 minor districts Ropar and Bhatinda. He said the winners of the Punjab finals will get a prize of Rs 50,000 while the runners- up team will get cash prize worth Rs 35,000. He added that the entire programme would be monitored by former test cricketer Saba Karim. Speaking on the occasion, Col Arvinder Singh, COO Kings XI Punjab and PN Sankaran Director Operations, Procam International said the tournament is open to all the young cricketers born on or after September 1, 1995 and winners of the Coca-Cola U-16 Cricket Cup would be awarded a cash prize of Rs1 lakh while the runners-up would get Rs 70,000. They said 20 talented players selected from the championship would get a chance to attend a week long ‘coaching clinic’ under the guidance of prominent former cricketers of the country. After the coaching the finals Coca-Cola XI, the team would participate in a competitive tournament against an invited International U-16 team from other cricket playing nations. At the end of the 9-month programme, three best players would be groomed for a period of 3 years. |

In the boys’ individual event, Vipan Deep of DAV College, Abohar, bagged first position with 87 points while his teammates, Sanjeev Kumar and Sikander Pal of the Panjab University, Chandigarh bagged the second and third position, respectively, with 83.5 points. Gagandeep, Tuba to lead Chandigarh carrom team
Chandigarh, January 21 Mahesh Sekhri general secretary of Chandigarh Carrom Association informed media that the men’s team include Mohd Hassan, Neeraj Bharti, Shaquib, Raj Kumar, Jang Raj and SP Dobhal (both veteran) while women’s team include Priya Sharma, Manu Gupta, Gulshan, Nidhi Gupta and Sushila Prasad. Mazhar Khan and Anup Gupta would accompany the team as manager-cum-coach and manager, respectively, while he would accompany the team as technical director. The team shall leave for Raipur on January 26 to participate in the championship being organised by the Chhattisgarh State Carrom Association under the auspices of the All-India Carom Federation, he added. |
Cheema, Gagan to fight it out in CNEB final
Chandigarh, January 21 It was a neck-to-neck victory for Angad Cheema as he and Bangalorian Saquib both halved the first five holes. Cheema hit the center fairway on 6th to go 1-up where Saquib’s ball went out of bounds. Cheema again won the 7th to go 2-up but became one-up on 8th while Saquib made a par. Both of them again halved 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and Cheema’s ball went on the right side of the fairway on 15th just behind the tree and both became squared. After they halved 16th, Cheema took advantage on 17th and 18th to win the match by 2 staying 2-up. In the second semi-final, Pappu, who beat top 3 amateur players of three different countries on road to the semis, started the day by winning the first hole by playing a safe par but could not keep up the good work and lost the 2nd. After Gagan and Pappu halved the 3rd, 4th and 5th, Pappu lost the 6th to go one-down but he then made a strong come-back winning the 7th and 8th to go 1-up. Pappu’s then ran out of luck as he lost again 9th, 10th to go one-down. It was difficult for the Kolkata lad to regain his momentum as he had lost 13th, 15th and 16th after halving 11th and 12th and Gagan ended the game on 16th by 4 and 2. |
