Ex-DGP Gill refutes charges of misusing power
Moga, January 11 “Honestly speaking, I was the custodian of the law as the DGP and entering the political arena does not mean that I am going on the wrong side of the law,” he said. On being asked as to why he entered politics rather than opting for nomination to any constitutional position post-retirement, he replied, “Life could have been easy for me by opting for such positions but my dream is to serve people and do something better for my native area. To fulfill my desire, I decided to join politics as the best option before me.” Gill further said, “My father, Nachattar Singh Gill, was a politician, who represented the Moga constituency in the state assembly. I am starting a political career from the legacy of my father, who served the area for over four decades in his political life before his death.” It may be mentioned that Gill’s father was shot dead in 1990 by the militants. All the key suspects in the case were acquitted by the apex court. One of the alleged accused, Jagdev Singh Gill, eluded arrest and ran away to Canada. He was declared a proclaimed offender. After Gill joined as the DGP of Punjab in 2009, Jagdev surrendered before a local court and since then he has been facing the trial in the murder case. When asked about the propaganda of the sitting Congress MLA Joginder Pal Jain that he did not stay at Moga during the last three decades and people would find it difficult to meet him, Gill revealed that he has only a house, which is at Moga, his hometown. “I have not built even a house during the entire service period in any part of the country. I always used to stay at the government houses due to security concerns. Therefore, the question to leave my hometown without a shelter does not arise,” he added. On the agenda that he has put forth for the elections before the locals, Paramdeep Gill stated, “My topmost priority would be to provide better civic amenities to the local people and creating job opportunities for the youth by developing Moga as a hub of education.” He claimed that with his efforts, the state government has recently approved a government college for women at Moga. The land for the purpose has already been identified from a property owned by the local body. The works on the former DGP’s agenda for the elections include, preparing a master plan for the town, solving traffic problems by getting the new railway underpasses constructed, flyovers on the roads, developing an urban estate, a separate Transport Nagar, a cluster for the agricultural implement industries, setting up of RO systems in the entire constituency to provide potable water, new parks with a concrete beautification plan of the town and above all, signing MoUs with the Municipal Corporations of Ludhiana and Bathinda for setting up auxiliary industries to provide back-up material to big units so that the job opportunities could be raised at the local-level. |
