“Though Gidderbaha is a safe Assembly constituency for me but I don’t want to get myself encircled by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Congress party in Gidderbaha as both parties will have a desire to encircle me there. So, I am filing my nomination papers from Maur Assembly constituency (Bathinda district) along with Gidderbaha.”

This was stated here today by the People's Party of Punjab (PPP) supremo Manpreet Singh Badal before filing his nomination papers for the Maur Assembly constituency.

He filed his nomination papers in the presence of a member of national executive of the CPI and a senior leader of the ‘Sanjha Morcha’ Dr Joginder Dayal. However, Manpreet today did not submit affidavit, relating to assets and liabilities etc, along with his nomination papers.

To a question that why he is contesting from two Assembly constituencies (Gidderbaha and Maur) Manpreet said in the elections, one had to adopt a strategy to emerge victorious so it was also a part of his strategy and he was contesting from two constituencies. If Manpreet won the election from Gidderbaha then the existence of the SAD from this belt would be wiped out, he added.

Manpreet also claimed that a top leader of the SAD had directed his party to purchase votes even at Rs 10,000 per vote to defeat him (Manpreet) in Gidderbaha. Due to this he had opened a front in Maur constituency so that he could not be encircled by them, he added. He also said he had preferred Maur as he felt that the people of Maur constituency heard the voice of the PPP with full attention.

He also favoured the harsh steps, initiated by Election Commission, saying that these would lead to free and fair elections in the state.

Manpreet also said that in place of a political conference at Maghi Mela at Muktsar, they would organise ‘Basant rally’ on January 22 at Muktsar as they had earlier decided at Khatkar Kalan that they would not hold any rally at any fair.

After addressing a rally here, Manpreet went to file his nomination papers. After the filing of nomination papers by Manpreet, the Returning Officer (RO) Pawan Garg said he had issued notice to Manpreet for January 12 to submit the affidavit, relating to assets etc.

Manpreet has run away, says Harsimrat

Bathinda, January 9
Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal today said that the Peoples Party of Punjab (PPP) leader Manpreet Singh Badal has “run away” from the electoral battlefield of Gidderbaha even before the campaigning started.

In a statement here, Harsimrat said that Manpreet had filed his nomination papers for Maur and Gidderbaha as he had realised that he was bound to lose in the latter constituency. She said the residents of Gidderbaha who had faced humiliation from Manpreet and his coterie in last four years have already made up their mind to show him the door.

She said that it was matter of great surprise that Manpreet claiming to be the inheritor of Chief Minister's chair was not confident to win from his home turf that he claimed to have nurtured in his last four stints as his own child. The fact was that Manpreet was getting votes in Gidderbaha during all the elections in the name of Parkash Singh Badal and SAD and the people of Gidderbaha are set to reject a leader who could not be loyal to his own leader and party that made him win from Gidderbaha four times. Harsimrat said the people of Gidderbaha have now realised that Manpreet was a leader with dual face who did not have confidence in them and was seeking election also from Maur. — TNS
