Love for the land
The director of soon to be released movie Taur Mittran Di, Navaniat Singh feels Punjabi film industry is entering an exciting phase
Jasmine Singh

A creative mind likes to play with the object, till the time it finds another one. For young director Navaniat Singh of Mel Kara De Rabba fame, the object of attention is only Punjabi movies. And he doesn’t feel he would be moving over it anytime soon. Till the time he gets to play with this object reasonably, there is definitely no stopping him!

Visiting Chandigarh for the post-production of his soon-to-be-released movie Taur Mittran Di, the director along with his lead actors Amrinder Gill and Rannvijay, wants to give a twist and a rather young look to Punjabi movies.

“The audiences want to look at fresh faces. They will still be okay with the storyline, but they want to see young and new faces sizzle on the screen. At Jimmy Shergill Productions, we believe in giving fresh faces a new launch pad. Mel Kara De Rabba launched Gippy Grewal and Dharti brought in Rahul Dev to the Punjabi cinema,” says the director who feels there is no dearth of creativity in Punjabi movies.

“Punjabi movies are moving towards an interesting and entertaining phase. I have made movies keeping the young audience in mind. The subjects are young and so is the treatment,” shares Navaniat Singh, who cannot understand what’s with the herd mentality. Need we tell Navaniat, Indians are best at following! “I don’t understand why do we have to be repetitive with our subjects? After the university and college themes being a hit, every second film is being made on the same lines. This happened with the NRI subjects, which we exploited to death. We need to be different, creative and experimental,” he shares.

The young director, who assumes an altogether different role on the sets, is always open to inputs from his team. But what inspires him the most? “There are loads that can be done in this field of moving-making and this thought inspires me a lot,” he adds without batting an eyelid.

Taur Mittran Di, so what is the offing this time? “This too is a young movie, starring Rannvijay and Amrinder Gill. It talks about the real Taur of the people in Punjab. With this movie, I want to tell the public that driving an open gypsy is not the only thing we are good at, there are other things that define Punjabis,” shares Navaniat.

Changing face of cinema is fine, did someone talk about the real or better still reel problems — budget issues. “The budget of the movie depends on how and in what way a director wants to treat it. We never thought Mel Kara De Rabba and Jiney Mera Dil Luteya would do good business, but it broke all the records of the box-office,” he says. Taur Mittran Di after all!

Actor speak

YOUNG GUN: Rannvijay One is a singer-cum-actor, Amrinder Gill, while the other is the hunk of Generation Y, Rannvijay, but they are united on a common platform, which they love — Punjabi movies. Both are young and know they can make a difference in Punjabi cinema. “We started a golden phase, which was marred by terrorism. It was revived by Manmohan Singh and now we are doing pretty well,” says Amrinder Gill, the singer who likes to explore his acting skills. “This is just the right time. With Taur Mittran Di I am trying to do that.” As for Rannvijay, “I am a Punjabi; the movies are a medium to be up, close and personal with my people.”

Stitch to suit
Though there is a growing market for readymade suits, the love for stitched ones remains
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

A trendy stitched suit is the preference of most males
A trendy stitched suit is the preference of most males

Nothing makes a man look more perfect then a fine suit. Among all the trends in male apparels, suits remain evergreen and in that too, the stitched variety is still much-liked by many males.

Says Parminder from Purba Tailors in Sector 7 says, “There is a slight difference in stitched and readymade suits. Though we haven’t seen a change in people’s preference as we still have as many clients as earlier, but the designs and stitching patterns are somehow influenced by the readymade variety.”

On why men still prefer to get suits stitched, he says, “The choice in fabric is more and the fitting much better as one can have personalised style in fabric as well as design. Other than that, a stitched suit means you can afford to spend more on a suit and be able to wear it for many years. The same can’t be said of most readymade suits as they are dated according to fashion trends.”

Most people agree that the stitched variety has a longer life than the readymade ones. Says Pradeep Chaudhary, employee of a telecom company, “I am suit person. Though I wouldn’t say that I never go for readymade coats and suits, my preference is always to get them stitched.  Suits are formal-wear and the trends aren’t seasonal unless, of course, you are talking about men on the ramp. And unlike women, we men don’t get them in dozens. Also stitched suits are more personalised than readymade ones.”

A good suit for this decade will take the best elements from the peak era of men’s suiting (think the formality of the Victorian era, the savoir faire of the 1930s and, for some cuts, the skinny detailing of the 1960s) and apply them to a modern silhouette. “Suits are all about a cut that compliments the male physique; so stitched variety suits me the best, as I can choose my own fitting,” says Bharat Sood, an employee of a BPO in Mohali.

Punjabi at heart
Yesteryears hit heroine of Punjabi cinema Preeti Sapru says she wouldn’t mind a comeback if she likes a role
Jasmine Singh

We are always taught to look ahead in life; thinking too much about the past is not a strong recommendation. Sometimes though, walking in the alleys of the past leaves a smile on the face and a glint in the eye.

Meeting with yesteryears reigning heroine of Punjabi cinema, Preeti Sapru, left us with the same impression. The fair-skinned, light-eyed, impish actor of Sarpanch, Yaari Jatt Di, Nimoo et al, in Chandigarh for Punjabi International awards, is a delight to talk to. Far away from the archlights, Preeti is handling business with her husband who is an architect. But when it comes to chit-chatting on Punjabi cinema, the lady is all for it.

“Punjabi cinema is definitely going places and I am happy to be part of the awards that will happen this year. I am all for Punjabi cinema, which has given me name and fame,” she says. It for the love of this cinema that pulls the actress back to the stream of creativity, the stream of Punjabi cinema. “I am working on a residential property in Thane, Mumbai. This is how I thought of doing something in entertainment and Punjabi movies are definitely the first thing that I would want to do. I am planning to start my home production,” adds Preeti with enthusiasm.

Preeti has already registered a story idea. She spares a thought and says, “This would be like a comeback for me and I would want to succeed in this. I want to make a love story with a touch of comedy. I am already toying with the idea of a Kashmiri girl in love with a Punjabi jatt and I hope to do justice with it.”

Much has changed in cinema and Preeti is well-aware of the fact. She smiles, “I was in Punjabi cinema for a good 20 years. The reason why I stayed there long was because I carried myself as a Punjabi girl, I dressed up like one in salwaar kameez, with a long paranda and bare minimum make-up. These days there is too much of accessorising and make-up,” adds the actress who wouldn’t mind working in a movie again. “The subject has to suit my age. I haven’t done commercial cinema for a long time now, though I have done a few serials for Prasar Bharti. I am open to be part of Punjabi medium again, if they have something good to offer.”

Black is beautiful
Men find brunettes more attractive than blondes

Contrary to popular perception, men find brunettes more attractive and intelligent than blondes. This inference can be drawn from a new study led by an Indian -origin researcher.

For the study, Viren Swami and colleagues at University of Westminster sent a woman to three London nightclubs with her hair dyed brunette, blonde and then red, and watched how many men approached her.

They then returned to the clubs and asked 130 men to rate pictures of her in the three guises. She was chatted up the most as a blonde. But she was rated most highly for attractiveness and intelligence when brunette.

Swami said that the findings, published in the ‘Scandinavian Journal of Psychology’, may reflect a shift in fashion, with brunettes now being idealised in the way that blondes were several decades ago. He said: “In the sixties and early seventies, when Jackie Kennedy was the ideal, brunette hair became the ideal for women generally. Then, in the seventies and eighties, blondes became the ideal. “But more recently, there has been a backlash against blondes and the dumb blonde idea has become dominant.” — PTI

The magic of New Year
Divya Dutta

I think the concept of New Year celebrations is over- hyped. Make merry the first day and we will make merry the entire year. This is what I used to hear in my childhood days and I continue to believe that till now, ironically, at the same time, I am well aware that it’s just another day!

Well, so I also got into the celebration mood. I was to host an event in Goa, the hub of New Year celebrations. What better way of mixing work with pleasure? I took my family along. The 31st night was work, ushering the New Year at the event with thousands of people around. The spirit of ending the old year and starting a new one was fun! Very overwhelming, in fact. In the midst of the chaos of fans wanting to click pictures, I found my ma sitting in a corner and she kept her hand on my head—Happy New Year beta! What better way than that to ring in the New Year with my bro hugging me tight!

The next day was ours. The first day of the year! To kuch to alag karna tha na! So Rahul and I went deep-sea diving. I am sea phobic but I had done this in the blue waters of Andaman Islands. But Goa water is murkier. So, there I made my resolution of the New Year. I will overcome my fears. There’s no better way of fighting your fear than facing it. And what an experience that was! I felt so free spirited. The next was a Goan lunch with wine and I forgot all about dieting! Punjabiyon ki tarah dil se khaya.

The evening was spent at the beach. Watching those waves, the moonlight and listening to music. I thanked God somewhere up for his little wonders. Which we forget to experience in our hectic lives.

Some family friends joined the party. It was great to see everyone dance, leaving aside inhibitions, work stresses, formalities and just going with the flow of the magical moments.

Why cannot we enjoy the entire year like the New Year eve? So, that every day is a celebration, devoid of fears, worries, insecurities — only the spirit of living life to its fullest.

I think life teaches us amazing lessons and I have learnt mine. It’s Happy New Year everyday! To me and to you all. Stay festive!

Plant it right
Satish Narula

A horticulturist is confronted with many a situation while planning. It is easy to plan when the area is large but when it comes to small and narrow land, the planning has to be judicious.

Normally, when we see a tree planted at a wrong location we curse the one who had planted it. It is clear that the planting was done by someone who had no foresight and had no knowledge about trees. It is good to plant trees but it is more important to plant the right species that gel with the location.

Nature has given a wide range of species to choose from. While planting a tree, its potential height and spread have to be kept in mind. Normally, we are lost when it comes to planting at the narrow spaces. For such locations, one could select columnar trees that grow straight up in the form of a column without throwing branches sidewise.

One of the best examples is the Sterculia alata. Also, called Buddha’s coconut tree, it grows to a height of about 50 feet or so with a spread of hardly about 10 feet. Planted as avenue tree, these trees seem to be standing by the side of one another joining shoulders forming a beautiful screen too. The mast like central trunk goes straight up, giving side branches that are shorter at the top end giving the tree a conical-columnar shape. The tree is however, deciduous and sheds leaves. It bears coconut like nuts that are borne individually on the tree. It is a drought resistant tree too. There is an interesting fact about this mast like tree that the foliage seems to differ from one another. This is due to the different stages of growth. Due to these strange reasons, the tree is also called Mad tree. In Bengal they call it ‘pagla gachh Besides, it tall columnar growing nature, the tree is also valued for the shape of the trunk near the base where it flattens to form many vertical edges.

In Chandigarh a row of Buddha’s coconut trees is planted as avenue at a narrow road leading to the bank square in Sector 17.

Behind the scenes

Bollywood director duo Abbas-Mustan, who are back with another action-thriller Players, after having made such edge-of-the-seat flicks for almost two decades, say that making thrillers is quite complex but they still are in love with the idea. The formidable duo have been making films in this genre for long and have given hits like Baazigar, Ajnabee, Aitraaz and Race among others.

“To make an effective thriller is not easy. It is very difficult. As holding the attention of audience is difficult, one has to ensure the suspense, the mystery is not out. Thriller films should be gripping every moment. Every time to make movies revolving around thrills is difficult but we prefer to walk with time,” said Abbas. “They should be excited at what is going to happen next. We also think of what will attract viewers to theatres for a repeat viewing,” he said. Echoing his brother, Mustan, says, “We keep our target audience in mind while zeroing on any project, like what the youth of today like to watch. It is important to walk with time without forgetting the storyline, the theme, emotions, songs that are part of Hindi cinema. It is important for the audience to understand and connect with the flow of the film.”

Players, a heist flick, is an official remake of Hollywood crime thriller, Italian Job and stars Abhishek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu, Sonam Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Neil Nitin Mukhesh, Sikander Kher and Omi Vaidya in prominent roles. The filmmakers did have a harrowing time while shooting right from seeking permissions to the language barrier abroad. “We had to seek lot of permissions for a traffic jam scene to be shot in New Zealand and that took a long time. While, in Russia we faced language problem, we appointed about 25 interpreters. We needed them to help us about basic things like where to go to eat etc,” Mustan said. — PTI

Zooming on Ranbir

Still rocking: Ranbir Kapoor Ranbir Kapoor achieved new heights of perfection in Rockstar. He was so involved in the character that he didn’t talk to people for days post the release of the film. Now, he is trying to attain even higher heights of perfection for Barfee. The actor has taken his close-up shots himself. The cinematographer of the film is Ravi K. Chandran.

A source tells us, ‘Ranbir plays a deaf-mute guy in the film. So he has to be expressive and display a variety of emotions using only his face and body language. He doesn’t have the liberty of speech in this film. So to see that he was getting his expressions right and to judge them, Ranbir decided to do the close-up shots himself. The most surprising part is that Ravi K Chandran allowed him to operate his cameras. The cinematographer is known to be very independent and doesn’t appreciate interference but he allowed Ranbir to shoot himself. That is because they both have worked together previously on Black and that film was also about physically challenged people.’

Anurag Basu confirmed the story and said that it was important for Ranbir to get all his reaction and expressions right.

Barfee stars Priyanka Chopra, Ranbir Kapoor, and newcomer Ileana D’cruz. The film is set in the 1970s and will release in the second half of 2012.

Up, close and personal with Sunny
I want to marry Daniel Weber over and over again: Sunny Leone

After her stint on the fifth season of the reality show Bigg Boss, Indian-Canadian porn star Sunny Leone wants to get back to normal life with her boyfriend Daniel Weber and says he is everything that her ex-fiance Matt Erikson didn't have.

Excerpts from the interview:

What is it like being a porn star?

I believe I lead my life just the way I want to. I am free to do what I want without any restrictions.

You made a conscious choice to be an adult actress. What was your parents' reaction to your career choice?

I informed my parents after I won the Penthouse cover-of-the-year and $100,000. It was impossible to keep it a secret. How would they react? Obviously there was a confrontation between us. They were upset at first. Eventually they came to terms with the fact that it is what I've chosen to do with my life. With time they came to know I'm still their daughter, still the same person.

While you were inside Bigg Boss house, your ex-fiance Matt Erikson apparently released your first adult-film together without your consent?

I am not sure about what has actually happened. But in the adult industry there are certain rules that must be followed. If for some reason he has released content that he does not own, then….

Was your parting with Matt unpleasant?

We didn't see eye-to-eye. It didn't work out. I am a happy person today. I know exactly what I want in a man now.

What do you want in a man?

Exactly what I have in Daniel (Weber). He is everything that I could ever imagine.

Do you hope to marry this guy?

Over and over again.

What are your plans now?

To try and get back to a normal life, as much as possible. I will be in Mumbai till after the grand finale of Bigg Boss.

Mahesh Bhatt is waiting to sign you up?

Every Indian girl abroad grows up watching these beautiful actresses in Hindi films on television, dreaming if she could ever be part of it. I am no different. But the option wasn't there. Now it is there. So I'd love to work with Mahesh Bhatt.

Are you considering a career in Bollywood?

I hope so. To be a part of that gallery of beautiful actresses I grew up watching… is a mesmerizing thought....

You went into Bigg Boss with your profession as an adult star a secret. Didn't that give you a kind of freedom from being judged?

No it didn't. I had to grope around in the house to give them a sense of who I was as a person, and not for what I did as a career. That was tough. It was very important for them to come to terms with my personality before I revealed my true identity.

What was their reaction when they got to know that you are an adult actress?

They were surprisingly okay with it. That was an absolutely pleasant surprise. If anyone had issues with what I did, I'd have known.

Would it have been embarrassing if anyone had issues?

No. I've been doing adult porn for 10 years. I've met all sorts of people. Those who like me, those who dislike me for what I am and what I do, those who hate or appreciate my choice of profession. How was the experience in Bigg Boss?

It was interesting watching the dynamics within the house. — IANS

Dhoom can wait...

The perfectionist: Aamir Khan Aamir Khan is known to focus on one film or project at a time. He is doing exactly that right now and as a result, it will be a while before Dhoom: 3 goes on the floors. A source tells us, ‘Aamir is currently focused on Reema Kagti’s Talaash. The film is releasing in June. Till then, he will be busy with the post-production work and heavy-duty promotional activities, as is the case with all his films.”

There is more to Talaash than meets the eye. It is Aamir Khan’s first leading role since 3 Idiots in 2009. It is his only release in 2012. Aamir has co-produced the film with Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. The film has two glamourous leading ladies: Rani and Kareena. There is a lost of mystery around its story and theme. It is a dark romantic thriller. There is music but there are no songs. It isn’t a commercial masala film at all. Aamir is a marketing genius and he is going all out to ensure that Talaash is promoted the right way, putting together the right trailers and posters. He is very good at creating buzz about his movies.

The source continues, “The shooting for Dhoom: 3 was to begin in March 2012 but it has now been postponed to June 2012 because that is when Aamir will be free, after the release of Talaash. Aamir likes to give his hundred percent to films and that is what he is doing.” We wonder, then, if Dhoom: 3 will release during the weekend of Christmas in 2012.

Show time

Telly queen: Ekta Kapoor With Bade Achhe Lagte Hain the queen of tellywood and bollywood Ekta Kapoor is surely in the best phase of her career. She is all geared up for another challenge as her show Pavitra Rishta has taken a twenty year leap. Ekta Kapoor speaks her heart out.

What was the need to have a 20-year leap in the show?

Pavitra Rishta has always been a show based on relationship. The USP of the show is Manav-Archana’s relationship. So the next phase had to be old age. We wanted to show our viewers how the relationship changes through time.

It looks like people nowadays love mature love stories, what do you think?

I don’t agree. Love stories always work. People have loved Manav and Archana’s love story from the beginning. Now that their love story has matured, I am sure they would love it too.

Don’t you think when actors portray characters older than their age, they will be typecast?

I think today’s audiences are very smart. They respect the actors for their talent and when an actor ages in a particular show they do not stereotype him. Sakshi Tanwar is doing a wonderful job in Bade Achhe Lagte Hain. I think as a producer I have to break this myth, because if I don’t, then the actors will definitely hesitate to portray such characters.

You always seem to convince your actress to play mother onscreen, but the same doesn’t happen with your male actors?

Joh nahi maante hain woh filmon mein chale jaate hain… I don’t know about them but I know one thing for sure that joh TV chodte hain TV unhe chod deta hai!!!

Coming back to Pavitra Rishta, do you think lead actors, Hiten and Ankita, will suit the leap?

If you ask me that does Ankita look 45 I will say no. But in real life, I have seen many people who don’t look their age. Take the example of Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan; they are 45 but look much younger than that. So, the question whether Hiten and Ankita will suit the leap or not doesn’t arise. All I can say is that if an actor doesn’t feel comfortable playing an older character I will work hard to make him feel comfortable about it.

Lastly, you are the queen of Indian television; who according to you is the king?

Hmm…that’s an interesting question, but I seriously don’t know who the king is. And since I am not an astrologer, I can’t even predict who will be the king (smiles). — Dharampal

THE YEAR AHEAD
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is January 4...

Today is the day to plant those New Year’s resolution seeds. This New Year is the sign of structure, time and commitment – and will give the perfect opportunity to flourish. In March, you’ll feel indifferent about an opportunity which comes your way but in fact this could be worth exploring. Your beloved will accuse you of isolating yourself and this is making it difficult for your partner to be close to you.

In this particular moment, try not to waste energy in fighting but wait without forcing. If you learn how to adapt yourself to the situation in hand, by coming to an agreement you will obtain great well-being and assured success. Take it easy this January— you may be tempted to make a rash decision, but deep down you know that holding steady is the best course to take. Till June is a good time to strengthen your connections with colleagues and customers you don’t see very often, because your social energy makes it much easier to relate to their needs. This will be a positive, profitable April with a great deal of action. However, evaluate everything carefully. Those born after 1980 can try their hand at share terminal without giving away their inheritance. Even a small sum could lead to a considerable win. Spending does appear to escalate in June both from elective to expected.

Gift buying, transportation, food, medical and large appliances head the list with covering financial mistakes of members and education coming in next. A discussion may be necessary to schedule gatherings, family care taking responsibilities or solve a rather ‘over blown issue’ between members. Investments in new business will be the hallmark of 2012. You may set up financial plans in a new direction. You may be pleasantly surprised by some unexpected gains. You may have a new financial opportunity knocking on your door. Make the most of it in July.
