Neighbours hold clue: mother

A week after her world came crashing following the gruesome murder of her children at her house, Malti Devi, mother of Gaurang and Kavita Sahu, refuses to believe that her neighbours did not have any clue to the occurrence in their immediate vicinity.

50,000 surveyed, but no child eligible

The UT education department zealously went ahead with getting over 1,500 seats reserved under the Right to Education (RTE) Act in private schools for admissions to poor children, but failed to find even a single child eligible for it.

Funds used up, but block not ready

For the past two months, construction work at the new E-block of the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) here has come to a halt as the UT Administration has exhausted the sanctioned funds for the completion of the building, which as per the original schedule was to be ready by July 2011.

Ahead of polls, UT seeks tenure extension of officers
Chandigarh, December 23
Three officers on verge of transfers to their parent cadres and a PCS officer seeking repatriation, the Chandigarh Administration has pressed panic button writing the MHA to allow extension in tenure of the officers concerned, at least, for the time being.

Congress to finalise candidate for Mayor’s post today
Chandigarh, December 23
The Congress is likely to finalise the candidate for the post of Mayor tomorrow at a meeting to be presided over by the Union Minister and local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal for the next Municipal Corporation (MC), which commences on January 1, 2012. Party sources revealed that the final decision on the mayoral candidate would be taken with the consent of local senior leaders.

Cub found dead near Pinjore
Panchkula, December 23
Three days after residents of villages near Barwala, had injured a panther on December 20, when it attacked some of the local residents, a cub was found dead near Pinjore here today. District Forest Officer (wildlife) R K Sharma said the cub was four months old and it died of pneumonia.

Drunk cop suspended for creating ruckus

A constable with the police control room created a ruckus at the Sector 17 police station in a drunken state here today.

FOSWAC members not happy with list
Chandigarh, December 23 The Federation of Sector Welfare Associations (FOSWAC) expressed resentment over the decision of the UT administration for not including any of its representatives on the list of nominated councillors.

114 structures to face demolition

The municipal corporation has issued demolition notices to the owners of 114 commercial structures located on the Old Delhi road in Ambala City for not getting their site plan approved before the construction.

A group of excise and taxation officials from Fatehgarh Sahib had to run for their lives to avoid being manhandled by angry shopkeepers, who were protesting against their action of forcible collection of cheques on the pretext of penalty.

Man gets 2-year jail term in kidnapping case
Chandigarh, December 23
District and Sessions Judge SK Goel today awarded two years imprisonment to Kaimbwala resident for kidnapping a girl. The case dates back to June this year. More importantly, the trial of this case was completed in just two months and five days, one of the fastest trails of recent times.

FCI employee gets jail term
Panchkula, December 23
A special CBI Judge has sentenced a Food Corporation of India employee to one-year rigorous imprisonment for misusing his official position here today. The guilty, Mahabir Parshad, a technical assistant at the FCI, Sirsa, had demanded a bribe of Rs 3,000 from a contractor.

In a significant judgment, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has made it clear that a bounced cheque complaint under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act is not maintainable against a person, “who has neither issued the cheque nor the same has been issued from his account.”

Thieves shoot at policeman
Mohali, December 23
A cop sustained bullet injuries after two thieves fired at him. The accused had come to rob a house in Phase I here last night. The injured policeman, Pawan Kumar, who received a bullet injury in his right arm, was admitted to the PGI, Chandigarh.

Man killed in mishap
Panchkula, December 23
In a fatal accident, an unidentified motorcyclist was killed near Ramgarh here today. The deceased apparently was hit by an unknown vehicle, said the police.
