The Lotus will bloom in U’khand: Smriti
Dehradun, December 17 “The bugle has already been sounded. Our victory in Uttarakhand would pave the way for the BJP storming back to power. I am confident of the Lotus blooming in Uttarakhand and it would spread across the country as well,” she said at the BJP women’s wing election meeting of the Tehri Assembly constituency. In her address Smriti lashed out at the Central Government for failing to take action against corruption and for it’s inability to check the rising food prices. “The poor housewives are feeling the pinch but the UPA Government seems to be oblivious of their pain. They have shut their eyes to the problems the housewives are facing to meet their day-to-day expenses,” she added. She further said the UPA Government should have asked the Home Minister to resign on moral grounds after his name figured in the 2G scam, but instead of taking action, the Congress Party was protecting him. Now even a charge sheet has been issued against the Foreign Minister but there is no action coming from the government,” she said. Earlier, Chief Minister B.C Khanduri called upon women to become equal partners in the democratic process. “We have given 50 per cent reservation for women in the panchayats so that women learn lessons in leadership at the grassroot level,” stressed Khanduri. Later, speaking with mediapersons, Smriti refused to comment on the number of seats to be allocated for women candidates. “I have not been officially briefed on the matter. But all I can say is we will be able to give more seats to women than the last Assembly elections,” added Smriti

Road being widened without removing electric poles
Mussoorie, December 17 The shortsightedness of the Mussoorie Municipal Council is evident from the fact that the contractor is widening the road without removing the electric poles from the middle of the road that could pose a threat to human lives, besides causing inconvenience to the commuters after the completion of the project. According to residents, the project of widening of the South road should have begun after removing the poles. The electric poles now stand tall like scarecrows at the middle of road that will result in obstructing the vehicular movement, thus defeating the initial purpose of widening the road at the first place. Aashish, one of the residents from Landour Bazar, said: “it is common sense that after widening of road the electric poles will be obstructing the vehicular movement and endanger the lives of commuters but nothing has been done so far”. He demanded that the Municipal Council should take cognizance of the matter and stop the remaining work till the poles are not
shifted.
The contractor said he had submitted a letter regarding the matter to the Municipal Council before starting the work but no action was initiated and as the work was getting delayed after monsoon, he had to continue with the construction work, irrespective of the removal of the poles. MC Executive Officer Rohitash Sharma said the competent authority for such work was the Electricity Department and it had sent a letter requesting the department to submit the estimate for the removal of the poles, but the department had not yet answered to their request. Electricity Department officials had no clue about any such letter and showed their ignorance. The lack of coordination and understanding between the two departments will only result in the wastage of tax payers’ money if the situation is not salvaged right now. The construction work still continues on the South road. |
