Health
is wealth
Travelling from one boat to another, with one foot on the shore and the other in water…sounds like we are talking about some rowing champion!
Entrepreneurs, hoteliers, businessmen are no less in any way. Hopping from one meeting to the other the whole day, attending a hundred phone calls per day, out of which majority are courtesy calls, punching in quotations on the laptop…it's life in the
Ferrari lane! Amidst this if someone mentions a healthy diet …you must be kidding! On the contrary, some young entrepreneurs live on the mantra of 'health is wealth'. Despite the choc-a-bloc schedule, they try to stick to their customised diet charts. We dig
in. jasmine@tribunemail.com
Fit ‘n’ fine
No matter how hard, the 'early-to-bed-early-to-rise' funda always helps. Late evening meetings followed by more meetings do not leave this young hotelier with much option, but when it comes to fitness, the word is - no compromise! Hit the gymnasium: No matter what time I get upin the morning, I do land up in the gym for my regular workout. The day doesn't begin without iron, it is mandatory for the smooth functioning of my system. Diet plan: I make a diet chart and then break it into six. This means I
prefer to take six small meals a day. This helps me avoid over-eating and keeps me energised. Throw in some almonds: I don't remember a day when I am not running here or there for meetings. Asking for a four-course meal is like asking for something out of this world. So, I throw a few almonds in my pocket, and keep munching whenever I can. Milky byte: Double-toned chilled milk three to four times a day is what accounts for the fluid intake. I avoid any kind of aerated drinks. — Vipul Dua, hotelier
Disciplined approach
Travelling is always on my agenda, but what is not on my agenda is playing with my health by not taking care of my own self. That is a top priority for Manish. Therefore, he follows a strict diet plan and exercise is the key. Discipline in eating: It is normal for me to fall for many temptations; there is so much to eat, however, I try and stick to the basics, small meals, which include lot of seasonal vegetables as well. Don't stick to your seat: If you keep sitting the whole day, you are bound to gain weight; the best thing is to keep moving. Stretching exercises while sitting are also helpful to break stress and keep fit. — Manish Goyal, hotelier
No liberties
Work is worship and there is no replacement for hardwork. Darpan Kapoor believes in maintaining a diet plan because it keeps him healthy and allows him to put in more hours at work. A few cups of tea can be an exception, but no taking liberties when it comes to health. Walk along: Early morning walk is the most rejuvenating exercise of the day. The fresh air in the morning is good for the lungs and also for the whole system in general. If you do breathing exercises along with it, therev is no better thing that you can do to your body! Call on the dietician: Work for me is passion and I would not take any chances with it. That is why I follow a strict diet plan as prescribed by my dietician. The chart is not just a piece of paper for me and I make sure I follow it religiously. Dinner time: Chappatis go out from my routine; it is salads, assorted veggies or barbequed chicken. Now, this also goes with my diet. — Darpan Kapoor, MD and
co-founder of Kapsons Ltd
Oil at bay
When youngsters his age hit the discotheque and return in the wee hours, this young entrepreneur creates ideas and meticulously follows them. Fitness is mandatory and there are no chances to be taken with it. The fitness regime is simple, yet adhered to everyday. Game point: I have to start my day with exercise; it could be badminton, swimming or pumping iron at the gym. If I don't exercise, I feel lethargic the whole day. Home food does it: Nothing on this earth can replace the wonders of home-made food. One, it is a balanced meal and two; this is the best way to avoid junk. Oil at bay: I keep all oily stuff at an arm's length. Another thing that I avoid is 'maida'. I like Chinese, but no overdoing with it as well. Walk when you talk: I don't like to close myself in a swanky office. I like to keep moving around in the workplace. This re-energises me and keeps me going. — Arjun Behl, MD, Shakun's Sun City

Perfect marriage
Many social issues are being picked up by film-makers nowadays and the attempt is to pass on some message to the viewers, besides the entertainment factor. Producer Jim Sanjay is the latest to join the fray.
Jim, who hails from Chandigarh but is settled in Chennai, has produced a movie Bani Hai Tu Mere Liye, which was initially shot in Tamil in the name of Anbirkku Alavillai. The movie showcases marriage as a very sacred institution and only because of misunderstandings does the issue of divorce crop up. Says Jim, "There is lack of pre-marital, marital and parental counselling, which leads to family unrest. The movie shows a married couple who are totally in love but because they have no counselling experience, end up in situations that spoil their life." He adds, "The movie is family-oriented and everyone has something to learn from it." The movie was released in South India last year and was shown in schools as well as NGOs. "The response was great," he says. The movie casts Sumit Pathak, Neetu Chaudhury and Johnny Lever. So do we get to see the comic side of Johnny Lever? "No, in fact, Johnny plays a character who is happily married and who counsels others to work out their relationships and live happily," quips Jim. As for Neetu, who again is Chandigarh-based, "I do a show for Star Plus, Ek Nayee Zindagi, which deals with real life issues of people. That is why I took up this movie. I'm a wife, a mother and a daughter-in-law, so my role in the movie portrays just what any other married woman goes through." She adds, "Marriage is not just a bed of roses, there are many responsibilities and situations that arise through misunderstandings. So, every woman can connect to this movie very well." Neetu would not mind acting in movies with a social message in the future also. Commenting on the movie, Charles Samuel, principal of Mount Carmel School, says, "The movie totally focuses on family values and the effect of complicated situations on children. The movie also helps one learn that there is a solution to each and every problem only if patience is practiced." Jim plans to do another show called Marriage Masala in all the languages, which will help young couples have a better married life. sabiatalwar@tribunemail.com

So much for vanity!
Lady Gaga's nude portrait, which was sketched by Tony Bennett for Vanity Fair is going to be auctioned off for charity. The 25-year-old pop queen recently posed nude so the 55-year-old crooner could draw pictures of her after they recorded a song for his Duets II album.
The creative concept includes the sketch done by the music icon, as well as a photograph taken by famed fashion photographer Annie Leibovitz. Both images of the Born This Way hit-maker can be viewed exclusively inside the magazine. The provocative images, which Gaga tactfully covers up all the right spots on her naked body while holding a cigarette, will soon become collector's items. The highest bidder will not only win the two illustrations of the bare-skinned entertainer, but will also receive signed copies of the original works by the artists, accessories from the shoot, and a poster of the Vanity Fair cover singed by Gaga, among other things. Proceeds from the auction will go toward charitable causes that include Exploring the Arts, a non-profit organization co-founded by Bennett and his wife Susan Benedetto, which aims to strengthen the role of the arts in public high school education. Lady Gaga's non-profit Born This Way Foundation will also benefit from
the proceeds. The singer's organization partners with the MacArthur Foundation and Harvard University, with a focus on youth empowerment.

Why waste?
Even as 62-year-old Chander Kanta takes us around her mobile van exhibition at the Government Museum and Art Gallery, Sector-10, Chandigarh; we are wondering how she created so much art from waste! The title of her exhibition ‘Art out of Waste’ so fits the bill!
Says Chander Kanta, “I’m a very eco-friendly person, so whatever waste material I collect I feel it can be recycled to make something useful.” She adds, “Every morning I have a new idea and then I start working on it. I’ve been doing this for five years now and have made around a thousand articles.” Like any other housewife, Chander Kanta needs something to keep herself busy and she is into stitching and embroidery since a very young age. Displayed at the exhibition are handy pots made out of cardboard, handbags made out of jute and old tattered clothes; baskets of newspapers and paper rolls, flowers of polythene and much more. How do such ideas come to her mind? “It’s just because of my inner creativity and the urge to make handy craft items out of non-biodegradable material, which also helps to keep the environment clean.” Chander Kanta has started the Path Finder Club as well, where right now she is the only one working towards keeping the environment clean. But she does invite other people to join hands. “I also visit women who are serving a sentence in Burail jail and teach them this art, so that even they get a chance to work towards the betterment of the society.” She adds, “I have three daughters who are married and a son who is an electronic engineer. My husband is a mechanical engineer and he supports me a lot.” One just can’t stop looking for more stuff - pencil stands made out of coke cans and wool, wall-hangings of egg trays, jewellery out of plastic and paper mache! She is inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and feels that women in India should know how to create things, so that they at least have some source of income. She also demonstrates how various decorative items can be prepared out of waste items. Time to collect some waste we guess! sabaitalwar@tribunamail.com

Waiting for Sakshi
Ekta Kapoor seems like a loyal friend. She waited for Sakshi Tanwar to complete Bade Achche Lagte Hain to cast her as a heroine in her next film. Sakshi played the homely wife in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, and later did some forgettable films. Now, she is back with a hit in Bade Achche but as Ekta is fond of Sakshi, apparently she has promised to cast her in a film.

The girl Abhishek has eyes for...
Abhishek Bachchan is all set for his next release Players which is a muti-starrer film also starring Bipasha Basu, Sonam Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Neil Nitin Mukesh. Here is a small chat with him…
Music and action
We wanted to do something different, so the makers planned this music launch where we performed some stunts too. Players is an action film so action is necessary in the promotions. Promoting USP
It's compulsory today to promote the film, so that you let people know what's the USP of your film. And Players is an action
film with lots of stunts and masala. There is so much variety in the cast and everybody has their own
fan following. Twisted tale
I always wanted to work with Abbas-Mustan. They are the only directors in India who make such twisted and amazing thrillers. I loved Race and then when I got the offer for Players actually I said yes without even learning about my character. This was something I wanted to do. Players is a story where seven different people set out
in search of gold and how they con and fight each other. You will just not see the guys doing some action
you will see girls also doing some stunts. Sonam the co-star
She is like a kid. Always talking but at the same time she belongs to the new generation where people are open to new challenges.
She is looking really gorgeous in this film. Playing daddy
Well, life has not changed that much but I can say happiness has been added to life. Day starts and ends by looking at her. She is really pretty like Ash. If
I am at home, I don't know how time passes. Parenthood is a different phase of life and I have started enjoying it.

Breathe easy
Renu Sabharwal It’s just the beginning of winter and one can already feel the nip in the air. And as winter intensifies, there is a marked increase in the number of asthma patients. It is estimated that asthma has seven-ten per cent prevalence worldwide. Asthma (az-ma) is a chronic (long-term) lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways. Asthma causes recurring periods of wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The coughing often occurs at night or early in the morning. Asthma affects people of all ages. For some, the problem starts during the childhood itself. In asthma the tubes that carry air into and out of your lungs become narrow. People who have asthma have inflamed airways, which tend to react strongly to certain inhaled substances. When the airways react, the muscles around them tighten. This narrows them, causing less air to flow into the lungs. The swelling can also worsen, making the airways even narrower. Cells in the airways may make more mucus than normal. Mucus is a sticky, thick liquid that can further narrow your airways. This chain-reaction can result in asthma symptoms. Symptoms can happen each time the airways are inflamed. When the airways react, the muscles around them tighten. This narrows the passage, causing less air to flow into the lungs. The number of people who have asthma has increased during the last 20 years, especially in urban areas. Emotional stress is also a root cause of asthma. Cigarette smoking can increase your risk of developing asthma as an adult. For children, second-hand smoke and pollution increases their risk. In order to avoid these risk factors, our ancient science of yoga is of great help. Through regular yoga and pranayama the constriction of the bronchial tubes gets reduced. Slowly, the capacity of bronchial tubes increases to a great extent. With this, one can control the attack of asthma to a great extent and gradually it can be cured. Asthma and bronchitis patients have to do three things Regular practice of selected yoga asanas and pranayama Proper diet Avoid the things that strain the nerves. Some useful asanas:
A word of advice for asthma patients Have dinner at least two hours before going to bed at night. Use a lot of vitamin C Asanas and pranayama have corrective, curative and strengthening effects on the condition of the lungs and the bronchiole linings Pranayama does internal purification. When we inhale air and keep it inside the body for a longer time, it absorbs all impurity from the system and expels it out when we exhale. Beside the above-mentioned asanas and pranayama, practice of yoga nidra, concentration and meditation give the best results. However, one must practice under the guidance of an expert yoga instructor. (Renu Sabharwal is a Ludhiana-based yoga teacher ) (As told to Poonam Bindra) |

Celeb point
The location is the palace of Jodhpur and I am shooting for Vikram Bhatt’s Dangerous Ishq. I danced in the palace and felt like a queen! The sound of my anklet resounded in the palace and I wondered how it must have been when real queens lived here. The past enamours me! Strangely I’ve acted in many period films. I do feel a connect with those times. And I thought of touching base with some of my past lives.
My brother Dr Rahul Dutta is not just a medical practitioner but also a hypnotherapist. He heals with past life regressions. They say reliving a problem is relieving it! So, lots of psychosomatic disorders which have apparently no medical cure like fear, depression, phobia — all have a base in our own past. I requested Rahul to take a session for me. Par ghar ki murgi daal baraabar. I wasn’t given an appointment for a while till I finally got lucky. After one session, he took me to my past life. A dream like state! One life then, second then I saw the third one! In Egypt in 16th century! I was shut in the caves for three days. I was a 16-year-old boy. It was very dark and suffocating. I was sweating when Rahul got me back. I could now clearly place where my darkness phobia right from my childhood was coming from. Amazing experience this! And I wonder how we keep coming back to the world in various forms. What remains is the soul and the spirit and the memories of the subconscious which we take to another life. As the assistance says, “Madam, the shot is ready, and I walk past the passages in the palace, with my anklets doing chann chann… I wonder if my anklets have made this musical sound in earlier times... (Dutta is a Bollywood actor)

Home truth
Moms who hold jobs are healthier and happier than those who stay at home during their children’s infancy and pre-school years.
Researchers analysed the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development Study, beginning in 1991 and involving interviews with 1,364 mothers shortly after childbirth, including subsequent interviews and observations for a decade. “In many cases, the well-being of moms working part time was no different from moms working full time,” said Cheryl Buehler, professor of human development and family studies, University of North Carolina, Greensboro, who led the study. For example, mothers employed part time reported better overall health and fewer symptoms of depression than stay-at-home moms, The Journal of Family Psychology reports. There were also no reported differences in general health or depressive symptoms between moms employed part time and those who worked full time, the study said. The analysis found that mothers employed part time were just as involved in their child’s school as stay-at-home moms, and more involved than moms who worked full time, according to a California statement. Part time mothers appeared more sensitive with their pre-school children and they provided more learning opportunities for toddlers than stay-at-home moms and moms working
full time. — IANS

Smart choice
Being in sync with haute couture requires both, a sense of style and knowledge of the latest trends. Those who can adapt the former to his own style can be a true trendsetter. A graduate in Mechanical Engineering, Karan Sood likes to be casually smart. Your sense of style For me, style is that sits easy on me and makes me comfortable on any occasion. The right attitude also contributes to an attractive sense of style. Latest addition to your treasure of clothing or accessories… A textured black blazer was my latest buy. Brand crazy or street pick-ups? I am no brand freak, but I look for the best in everything. My style icon would be… Ranveer Singh, as seen in the promos of Ladies Vs Ricky Behl. Who do you think is the worst dressed celebrity? It has to be Rakhi Sawant for her atrocious sense of dressing. Which look would you prefer – sporty, chic or glamorous? Sporty One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension… Skinny jeans with narrow ended high shoes. It does not make sense to me. Your take on accessories? Nothing funky for me, but a classy watch and belt are a must. What gives you a high on the confidence level… When I’m dressed properly and get a compliment or two, it sure boosts my confidence. A treat for the eyes
Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi in collaboration with Consulate General of Canada, Chandigarh is organising a lecture by Sarinder Dhaliwal, a Canada-based artist of Indian Origin.
Sarindar Dhaliwal is a visual artist based in Toronto. She was born in Punjab, raised in London and has lived in Canada since 1968. Dhaliwal received her BFA with a concentration in sculpture at University College (Falmouth, Cornwall, UK), and her MFA from York University (Toronto, Canada). Her practice is rooted
in both painting/drawing and large mixed media installations. Drawing on a personal history of movement from her birthplace in India, to Britain and then to Canada, this circuit retraced many times serves as a conceptual framework to construct a particular cartography of a 20th century Diaspora and the colonial legacy that shaped it. Text functions as a marker between the private and the public and underlines how narrative and sequence have increasingly played a larger role in her visual work. Sarindar Dhaliwal has recently completed her first experimental film project, Olive, Almond & Mustard, an examination of childhood dissonance located in an immigrant experience. The moving and digital image is a natural addition to the strategies she employs considering the increasing interdisciplinary and pluralistic nature of her practice. There is a body of critical writing that has positioned her work within a postcolonial/feminist discourse - this includes two Master’s theses (York and University of Quebec at Montreal). (On December 16 at 5.30 pm at the Consulate General of Canada-17)

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tuu
This is a romantic comedy. It pairs cutie Imran and hottie Kareena for the first time. We are only looking forward to the pair. The trailer is mediocre. It just might do well due to the buzz and fresh pairing. It releases on Valentine's Day in 2012. Heroine
Kareena Kapoor is doing the most challenging role of her career and she is finally working with Madhur Bhandarkar. This film is supposed to be a no-holds-barred look at the life of a superstar and involves cricket and gambling too. Madhur is finally making his dream film. The film should release in July. Agneepath
This powerful remake releases on Republic Day, 2012. Hrithik Roshan heads the cast comprising Rishi Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra. The promo looks great and the film is unapologetically violent. Hrithik Roshan chooses good films so we expect this one to be extraordinary. Kahaani
This film is selling because of Vidya Balan. She has earned her place in the industry and can run films single-handedly (look at the success of The Dirty Picture!). Sujoy Ghosh doesn't have a great track record. She plays a pregnant woman in the film, who is looking for the father of her baby. Yes, it sounds like Kill Bill! Let's see what happens in the movie. It should be out in January or February 2012. Players
Abbas-Mustan's films are stylish and keep you guessing till the end. Expect the same from Players. We don't think much of the cast of this multi-starrer, though. The film is among the first releases of January 2012. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone are set to do their first film post their break-up and it is a romantic comedy directed by Ayan Mukerji! The film is set in Kashmir and we are super excited about the gorgeous location and the team of the film. Who knows, romance might bloom between Deepika and Ranbir, again! The release date is not set yet. Shanghai
Dibakar Banerjee makes good movies and we like the interesting cast of the film: Emraan, Abhay and Kalki. So, we are looking forward to this political thriller which releases in the summer of 2012.

The most recent was the 26/11 terror attack that happened in 2008. I had seen the pictures of the attack that were so disturbing. I couldn’t sleep at night for months. Those images would come to my mind over and over again. It was really bad. Even now when I think of it, I feel
horrified. Sana Sheikh
I remember once I was on my back home. It was around 10.30 and I was travelling in an autorickshaw in the Oshiwara area of Mumbai which is supposed to very crowded and safe. Some guys travelling in another auto stopped mine and asked the rickshaw driver to come out. They were drunk and started beating him. I got scared and I immediately rushed to a bus stop and took the first bus which arrived immediately. As I got inside the bus, they smiled at me. The incident still haunts me that I can’t travel in autorickshaw alone. I always travel with friends and never sit in the corner. I even roll up the windows of my car and lock the door from
inside. Karan V Grover
I was once driving from London to Scotland and suddenly, the GPS of the car stopped working. I got scared as I didn’t know what to do. I called so many people to ask where to go. Because I was alone in an alien country, it freaked me out even more. I was supposed to reach Scotland at 7.30 in the evening and I reached at 12.30 am. Also, during the night in Scotland, it gets really dark. It still haunts me that I carry my own GPS and map
now. Shaheer Sheikh
I was supposed to go to Lower Parel once at 9 in the morning. That’s the peak hour for traffic and I knew I would get late so I decided to take the local train. It was my first time and somebody flicked my
wallet. I lost my pan card, credit card, debit card and so many other things. That was the first and last I travelled by local train. Every time, when someone talks about local train to me, this incident comes

I was in the first year of my college and we had attended the
freshers’ party. I was given Mr Fresher’s title. I had a speech prepared already because I knew I’d win. I went to up the stage for the acceptance speech and totally goofed. I had no confidence. It was embarrassing and a wakeup call that I lack confidence. After that, I worked very hard. Now, I can face a crowd but that incident still haunts
me.

I was once returning from a shoot in Naigaon when I saw an accident on the highway. I was shooting for Behenein that time. It happened in front of my eyes while I was driving. I stopped immediately, called an ambulance and helped. But still, I haven’t forgotten it. Even though it didn’t happen with me, the incident haunts me and I always drive within permissible limit. Even on the highway, where people go a little overboard, I do not race. I am always extra careful as it comes as a flashback to me.
Sukirti Kandpal
I remember it was January 1, 2007 when I was in Jaisalmer. I had gone there to celebrate New Year and we were racing our SUV on our way to Jaipur. Suddenly, a Tata Safari appeared on the road that hit our car so hard that the front side of the car was damaged. Our speed was about 130 km per hour. As soon as our car hit the Safari, it flew in the air and then turned turtle. I was in the middle seat and just closed my eyes. Those 15 seconds were the worst moments of my life. I didn’t even know if I was going to be alive. Luckily, by God’s grace, nobody suffered any injury and I had just a minor scratch. It still haunts me. |

The year ahead
If your birthday is December 14...
You are talented and versatile, very good at presenting ideas and at organising things. You may have a tendency to get itchy feet at times and need change. Bad news comes your way early next year and might keep you off-balance for a few days. Try not to act rashly; though you may be tempted to take quick action, you’re much better off slowing down and waiting to see how it all shapes up. Calm down. Those born after 1980 will be really busy and must learn to manage their time efficiently. You still have plenty of time left to change things around. Sometimes you need to take a few steps back before you can make that great leap forward. You are standing too close to the big picture to see the whole thing all at once.
