Eating joints are always about the food, but the interiors add to the charm

There could be a number of reasons behind you preferring a particular hotel or restaurant and food would undeniably be the first one. But do interiors make you zero-in on a particular place? We get inside a few joints! In fact, hotels and restaurants in Chandigarh are putting a lot of emphasis on the décor and coming up with unique elements in design.

Newly opened Smoke House Deli has come up with subtle white interiors, caricatured walls and other plush elements. In fact, this all-white restaurant has interiors where everything from the outdoor signage and the main door to the wallpaper and cabinets, are hand-illustrated. Smoke House Deli is a place where fresh provincial meets funky colonial; where grandfather clocks and rotary telephones are hand-drawn on the walls and elegant glassware perches beside two-dimensional pantries. Says Zameer Basrai, who designed the place, "We treat the walls like a treasure chest of a world traveller; just as our clientele has travelled the world and has discerning tastes, our décor too is a keepsake. We are also celebrating post-modernism from where Corbusier left it, by bringing the world close together through collectibles and memories captured in design." Adds Nitin Trehan, one of the owners of the place, "We wanted to locate Smoke House Deli in a perfect setting that showcased not only its food, but also paid tribute to the urban city. With this location, we found the perfect space for a contemporary take on the timeless European cafés where like-minded individuals gather over great food and drinks, to share a laugh."

Hot Millions High Point, with its philosophy of the best food, has also the best of interiors to offer. Modern interiors blend nicely with teak furniture in warm tones. "Earlier, we were into fast food but then we thought about fine-dining and with it we also decided to change the interiors," adds Mohan Bir singh, director, Hot Millions talking about the interiors that have been created with a leaf as the motif. "Leaf represents circle of life and we want this place to keep running for a good number of years. The place has been done up in earthy shades with contemporary settings, using a lot of wood. Wood brings in warmth and the whole idea of our food chains has been to make the customer feel wanted as well as at ease. Interiors play an important part in this process and so do colours. Crystal, night lounge sector- 26 has been created in the same spirit as its name. The colour fall theme that continuously changes the background color of the lounge, the innovative panel designing that creates an open sky feel of the roof, and the floors that have a metallic sheen.

Also Heritage the English Boutique Hotel takes you back in time with its British interiors. Says Vipul Dua, managing director, "Instead of flashy lights, we have kept the interiors British and elegant." Pictures of Big Ben being cleaned when it was being created and conceputalised, to highlighting its various facets, the ambience of the place gels with the food and services. "Interiors of a place make all the difference. They are the first thing that a customer notices, only later do they order food. So, if the interiors are not interesting you wouldn't have a person stick around for more," he adds.

Shor in the city
Ankush Safaya’s brush strokes move from a small town a metropolis

City scapes: Ankush Safaya with one of his paintings
City scapes: Ankush Safaya with one of his paintings

Everyone dreams of making it big in the city of their dreams. Ankush Safaya is one such person who grew up in the open spaces and vibrant colours of Punjab. At the age of 26 with a plush job in hand, he was still searching for something that he could never find in the rich city of Delhi. It was to counter this 'loss of state' that made Ankush pick up the brush, and today he showcases his fourth solo exhibition at Flamme Bois, sector 7. In the backdrop of his paintings, the artist talks about the gaps between the noise of a big town and how he fills it with colours.

"Painting for me began when I was a child," he says. Having born in the humble town of Hoshairpur, arts, for his family had no meaning. "I always loved colours and told my parents about studying art at Mumbai. I knew, the idea will not be accepted," he adds. It was a few days later that Ankush's parents took him to a painter in the neighbourhood. "This painter was painting a doctors board. Dad looked at me and said that if I was to be a painter, I would spend the rest of my life painting doctors boards," he reminisces.

For this young artist today, it's not about minting money or just going wild with colours. "My work is about creating a comparison between the life of a small town and a metro," he says. His black and white series focuses on splashes of colour on shades of black and white. "Life in a small town is filled with warmth, colour and togetherness. When people go to big town, no one thinks about the loss of everything that helps one grow. Metros are very mechanical," he says.

Currently working in the Research and Development in Samsung Electronics, Ankush looks at painting like dealing with trauma. "Life in a Metro tends to kill social life. There is no bonding there. Everyone is just rushing in and out of work," he says.

One of Ankush's previous series Monsoon Sutra included an installation piece Chai. A huge hit in the Hugarian High Commission, the piece remains close to his heart. "Everyone, from a tea vendor to a big corporate honcho, longs for the perfect cup of tea. My creation was to bring the two together for a cup of tea," he says.

The metro, despite taking away the entire pleasure of life away still does not deter this young lad. "Yes, I can move away any time, but I want be in the city and then talk about its flaws, as each day I find a new vice. I don't want to be like the saint preaching in the Himalays," he says.

Roll over adventure

Imagine the thought of rappelling down from a 40 feet wall or finding your way without a compass and swirling 50 feet above the ground. And think of doing all this under the guidance of experts in the comfort of a school. Aspen Adventures and the British School join hands to create pure outdoor fun. Coming to Chandigarh for the very first time, Goals (Games -Outdoor-Learning-Adventure-Learning-Skills) will bring the real magic of adventure alive in the school premises.

Focused on the ideology of learning by doing, the school will organize three days camps for four days each from December 25 till January 7, where kids between the age group of 8-18 will have the opportunity to learn more about nature and test their skills.

The activities will focus on making children more aware of their environment, self confidence, self worth and develop leadership skills among them. The adult-child ratio will be 1:8.

Shashank Pandey of Aspen Adventures says, "Apart from the outdoor activities, we will also be providing education in a way that it helps the child to the maximum. Nature is not just about planting trees, it is much more that. This will be the basic concept of the camp." — TNS

The joy & celebration
Poonam Bindra

When some good old traditions get revived, leading to merry-making while being precursors to important festivals, they become very popular. Ludhiana is one place where people like to celebrate any occasion with pomp and show.

So, as we near Christmas, the latest trend of celebratary cake mixing ceremonies gains momentum. Earlier it used to be done in select big hotels, but now, buzz about preparations for the Christmas plum cake are heard from different corners of the city. The chefs at the bakeries are rolling up their sleeves in anticipation of the jingle bells, and getting ready to plunge into the vital ingredients like black currants, orange peels, candied ginger, red cherries, raisins, walnuts, almonds, prunes and spices like powdered cinnamon, cardamom and cloves. Amongst much fun and revelry, the whole lot of condiments and dry fruits are doused in rum, whiskey, vodka, and gin with honey syrup to add to the right sweetness.

The legend goes that perhaps it was a tradition in Rome in the 16th century, which has grown into a celebration which heralds the festive month. Chef Vishvesh Khanna of Geoffrey’s performed this ceremony at Sunil Malhotra of Aditya Hotel’s residence amidst group of cheering friends. As required the mixture has been stored away to soak with some liquor to be added after every 3 or 4 days. The Youth Christians Association had a teenagers’ bash to celebrate cake mixing and as Peter Fernandez informed, “We want the youngsters to know and learn about this unique ceremony and will do everything from the mixing to the baking ourselves.” Park Plaza, which hosted the ceremony for a 175-180 kg cake, combined another initiative with it – keeping their corporate social responsibility in mind, they have associated the event with a HKHK.com – Healthy Kids and Happy Kids, international program and even got the models from the international circuit to endorse it. “It somehow gives a great feeling of bonhomie when the staff and guests intermingle with each other for this occasion”, says Umesh, F&B manager, Park Plaza, which will be opening their special pastry shop from December 15. Fortune Park Klassic has already done the mixing while Hot Breads in Sarabha Nagar will do it this week. Another adventure in this ceremony as told by junior Chef Peter is the mixing of coins in the pile of ingredients for the Christmas cake. Whenever anyone finds a coin while making the batter, he or she will have all the luck in the ensuing year. Some ladies regard it as a religious ceremony for it is connected with Christmas. Hence, it celebrates the birth of Jesus. But for the time being, we can hardly wait to savor the yummy plum cake which is still maturing.

Morning wonders
Mumbai winter seems to be arriving late this year. Morning events are still sunny and our Bollywood stars too feel the heat. We take a look at our B-town celebs and what they wore on various day time events.

Gauhar Khan: Pretty in white
Gauhar looks like a Sunday breeze with her simple ensemble. We love the bright shirt that’s pretty but still casual. Her white pants are perfect for day time wear and she’s paired her outfit well with gold sandals and earrings. Her hair however seems a little much.
Shweta Salve: Flowing beauty
Shweta has hidden her slim figure in this billowing dress. While drapes are usually very beautiful, this dress is far too big for her. It is not flattering and it looks like she forgot to take off the cape at the hair salon. However, she’s accessorised her tent well.
Nigar Khan: Style file
Nigar gets dressing for a lazy Sunday afternoon perfectly. Her maxi is not fussy but she throws in a chain so that it doesn’t look too much like a nighty. We think the colour and material is perfect for a hot day and overall she just looks effortlessly stylish.

Action song

Farhan has just finished shooting a video for the song Mujhko Pehchaan Lo for Don 2 with Shah Rukh Khan in Mumbai. This will be the first of a kind music video where instead of a choreographed song and dance treatment, they have opted to visualise the song as an action sequence. The song has been choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant.

Speaking on this Farhan Akhtar said, “It’s going to be a first of its kind music video which makes it really exciting to do. Instead of a song and dance treatment, we’ve opted to visualise the song as an action sequence to see Don vanquish his opponents while casually singing the words is surreal but very intriguing.”

Commenting on this kind of choreography, Vaibhavi Merchant added, “Lip syncing, doing action, performing and all that jazz without a dance and yet a song is a unique experience for me. Hope this sets a trend because its first of its kind and this is only possible with SRK in a Farhan Akhtar film.”

Chatter Box
Things stars always carry
Stars spend most of their time outside their home shooting and living their lives out of their bags. But what are the five most important
things that they take just about everywhere with. We ask them what they cannot do without

Pooja Gor Food bag: Pooja Gor
I always carry my bag, two cell phones, wallet that has all my cards and money, bottle of water and packet of biscuits. I keep a small bottle of water in my bag.

I generally drink very less water which is not very good. So I carry the bottle so I can remember to drink. I carry biscuits. Whenever I feel hungry between the shots, I just have them.

Assortment of sorts: Karan Mehra

Before leaving, I always check if I am wearing my watch, kada and ring. I always carry my phone, wallet and glares with me. I also always wear a gold chain which Nisha gifted me on my birthday after we started seeing each other. The ring was gifted by my mother and it is very special to me. Kada is something that I always wore. And of course, I just can't do without glares in the sun.

Clicked in: Anuj Sachdev

Keys, phone, cell phones are something that everyone carries with them. But I always carry my gym bag, laptop, and camera. I make short films and love to click pictures randomly.

Hence, I always carry my laptop as I can edit them and save them in my laptop. I carry gym bag because I never know what time we will pack up from the sets, so I just directly head to gym after the shoot.

Game zone: Hiten Tejwani

I never leave home with out my car keys, home keys, wallet, mobile phone and iPad. I like to carry my iPad because whenever I get time, I like to play games. But off late, I haven't been getting any time to play games on the sets. Still, it's a great way of staying connected with the world. You can read news, check emails, Facebook etc.— HRM

Love for plastic: Sara Khan

I carry so many things. But to name a few, I always carry kohl, perfume, lipstick, house keys, and my phone. One thing that I never forget is to carry my debit card. I am a shopaholic and I don't like to carry cash. So debit card is something that I always have to carry.

Money issues: Ragini Khanna

It often happens with me that I go out and I don't have more than Rs 200 in my wallet. I hardly bother to check it and my mom invariably puts some money in my wallet. So just on the safer side, I carry my debit card as I don't have a credit card. Other things that I always carry are my car and home keys, phone and my purse.
