Won’t sell arms to Pak: Moscow
New Delhi, December 7 The two countries are expected to sign 7-10 agreements in the fields of military, energy and trade during Manmohan Singh’s visit for the annual summit between the leaders of the two countries, Russian Ambassador to India Alexander Kadakin said at a press conference here. He said talks were also on to explore the possibility of inking a pact to build Kudankulam nuclear plant’s third and fourth units during the trip. Kadakin said the Russian Navy would ‘soon’ hand over to India the Akula-II class nuclear submarine K-152 Nerpa to be rechristened INS Chakra. To a specific question on Pakistan, he said India should not get fixated on Pakistan. “The moment you (India) do that, you become a regional power when you are a Super-Power in the making,” he said. Kadakin said Pakistan had shown keen interest in buying MI helicopters from Russia but Moscow was bound by its commitment not to supply weapons to Pakistan. He said despite the "internal" problems in this country on the Kudankulam plant in Tamil Nadu, Russia was looking forward to expanding its nuclear cooperation with India. The commissioning of the first two reactors at the plant in Tirunelveli district has been stalled due to protests by the people of the area. The Russian envoy hoped the civil nuclear liability rules framed by India would not affect atomic cooperation between India and Russia. "We are hopeful that the rules will not come in the way of implementation of the grand plan of nuclear cooperation (between India and Russia)," he said. The Russian Ambassador voiced regretted the low level of Indo-Russian trade for which a target of 20
billion dollars has been fixed for 2015. The Indian PM will be the first top foreign dignitary
to visit Moscow after Sunday’s polls to the Russian ‘Duma’ (Parliament).
‘Avoid Pak fixation’ India should not get fixated on Pakistan. The moment you (India) do that, you become a regional power when you are a superpower in the making. — Alexander Kadakin, Russian Ambassador to India

Reining in websites Faraz Ahmad Tribune News Service
New Delhi, December 7 Reacting to reports of Sibal summoning representatives of some of the social networking sites, BJP deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha S.S. Ahluwalia said, "We condemn if some distortion has taken place on such sites. No political party would approve distortion of images of public figures on the social network sites," said BJP leader S S Ahluwalia, adding though that "Sibal's way of regulating them is not okay.” Indicating an implicit support, Ahluwalia said, “There are certain objectionable contents at times, for instance someone from Pakistan had posted some objectionable and inflammatory material against Guru Gobind Singh on YouTube, hurting Sikh sentiments. They removed it after I pointed this out to them. Let the government propose a regulatory mechanism in Parliament and develop a consensus.” On the minus side, he cited how there was an attempt to block Baba Ramdev’s campaign against the government on black money and warned against such a course. The BJP leader admitted that Sibal raised a valid point but felt that instead of taking any decision arbitrarily he should bring a regulation by consensus in Parliament. "We will give our views then," said Ahluwalia. While agreeing that the Constitution granted freedom of speech and expression, Ahluwalia said that gave the social networking sites no licence to put out perverted pictures or hurt religious sentiments of the people. BJP leaders also mentioned how the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley has had repeated run-ins with the social networking sites. Recently, he had to approach Delhi High Court against a US-based company which had registered a website arunjaitley.com, to which Jaitley had no access nor did it belong to him. Then he had to contend with someone who had a created a fake account on Twitter in the name of Jaitley and had a hard time removing this fake account in his name from Twitter. |

Court tells police to book makers of Dirty Picture
Hyderabad, December 7 The Nampally city civil court passed the order based on a petition filed by a local lawyer Azad who alleged that the film, released across India on December 2, contained several obscene sequences that portrayed women in poor light. The court directed the Nallakunta police station in the city to register a case. Ekta Kapoor’s Dirty Picture is said to be a veiled biopic of southern screen siren Silk Smitha, who created a sensation in 1980s with her steamy roles. She committed suicide in 1996. The sobriquet ‘Silk’ came in 1979, with her first Tamil film Vandi Chakkaram, in which she played a bar girl named Silk. In a career spanning 17 years, she acted in over 450 films in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi languages. Even before the release of Dirty Picture, her brother Naga Vara Prasad had filed a petition before the Andhra Pradesh High Court seeking a ban on its release. He had also sent legal notices to themovie producer. However, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had granted an ‘A’ certificate to the movie. Vidya Balan, who plays Silk Simtha’s character in the movie, has dismissed the perception that the film was based on the life of the late sultry dancer.

Mullaperiyar dam row Tribune News Service
New Delhi, December 7 The issue generated heat in the house during zero hour as MPs from Tamil Nadu said the dam was safe and those from Kerala pleaded for a new dam. D Raja of the CPI urged immediate intervention of Singh and convening of a meeting of the Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Kerala to find an amicable solution. Making a statement during zero hour, V Maitreyan, an AIADMK member from Tamil Nadu, said, “Vandalism at the dam site (in Kerala) should be stopped.” He said the gate of the dam compound was damaged by mobs. This statement evoked protests from members from Kerala with Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan intervening to pacify warring members from the neighbouring states. Maitreyan went on to say that the action of the Kerala Government in demanding the construction of a new dam in place of the 116-year-old Mullaperiyar dam was “tantamount to violating the Supreme Court order in 2006”, which had declared the dam as safe. He said even the advocate general of Kerala had admitted recently that other dams like the Idukki and the Cheruthoni were capable of absorbing the waters of the Mullaperiyar dam in case of an emergency. On the other hand, Congress member from Kerala PJ Kurien said the Kerala Government was demanding a new dam as more than three million people downstream of the Mullapeiyar dam were living in fear. A recent study by the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, had said the dam could collapse if an earthquake of intensity more than five on the Richter scale hit the area. There have been 26 tremors of varying degrees in the region in the past few months, Kurien added. |

Anna’s remark New Delhi, December 7 Pawar said while he was pained at the "vituperative" views of Hazare, he would appeal to his party men not to indulge in any form of violence in words or deeds. He sarcastically said by supporting physical assault on him at a public function, "Hazare has given a new definition to the concept of Gandhism and non-violence". Pawar asserted that he himself had no objections to Hazare expressing views on him or his actions but warned that now if any further physical attack takes place on him "it would be amply clear from where the instigation or encouragement for such acts emanates". — TNS |
