44 illegally constructed houses razed
Dehradun, November 28 Earlier, DMC officials had tried many times to get the land vacated, but to no avail. Assistant Mukhya Nagar Adhikari Harak Singh Rawat, circle officer (police) PS Dobhal and land inspectors, Madan Gopal and Harsh Rawat, were present on the occasion. The team had informed the residents about the drive in the morning and asked them to vacate the houses. However, when the team reached there, no one had vacated the house. Heavy police force was also deployed at the site. The drive went on for almost four hours. Later, the occupants of 60 houses requested the team to give them some more time to vacate the houses as they had no other place to live in this cold weather. The officials have given them four days. People also named a few people from Vikasnagar and Dehradun for charging Rs 10,000-50,000 from them and providing land at Brahamwala Khala. Dobhal said the police will inquire into the matter. |
BTC trainees hold march
Dehradun, November 28 During the 20-day-long agitation, the protesting members were brutally lathicharged on November 22 and around 22 trainees were arrested, but the members had only gone on to further intensify their stir. The BTC Trainees State Union, Uttarakhand, received a shot in the arm after the Leader of the Opposition Harak Singh Rawat and senior Congress leader Dinesh Agarawal extended support to them. The members are demanding immediate holding of the third semester examinations and immediate appointment of BTC trainees at their place of posting. To tide over the shortage of teachers, the BTC trainees are being deputed to revive teaching at the closed government schools which are located in the remote areas of the state. This has been resented by the trainees who are awaiting examination at the end of the third semester and see the recent government order of deputing them to the remote areas as a hindrance in their
academic career. |

Demand to restart Mohaan cattle fair gains pace
Nainital, November 28 Ever since the Nishank-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had closed the fair under pressure from the right wing Hindu elements, who had demanded the closure on the demands that cattle were being sold for slaughter at the fair, the people, who used to participate in the fair, claim to be facing several problems. Ironically, most of the participants in the fair have always been practising Hindus. The villagers have pointed out that while it is difficult for them to continue feeding the aged oxen which they are unable to sell to the farmers in the plains where they can still be utilized for farming and related activities, they are also unable to purchase the younger ones on account of paucity of resources. They say that repeated crop failures have made it difficult for them to continue feeding the old cattle heads and as a result they are compelled to abandon them. The villagers under the banner of the Uttarakhand Sanskritik Parishad along with the active support of the Kisan Union and the Berozegar Sangathan have demanded that the fair should be restarted. They have sent a memorandum to the state administration and had even resorted to traffic blockade a couple of days back. Senior Congress leader Dhirendra Pratap, who had opposed the closing of the fair and carried out a campaign against it in 2009, pointed out in an interaction with The Tribune, “The fair must be restarted. The government is just harassing the people in the name of implementing the law pertaining to the ban on cow slaughter. It is well known that the cattle heads sold in the fair aere never meant for slaughter. The Nishank government had closed the fair. On coming back to power, we will ensure that not only is the fair restarted but the law is also amended to ensure that no one is harassed.” He asked, “Is this right for the Hindu sentiments to see the cows and oxen being abandoned in the forests?” Pratap has been demanding suitable amendments to the Cow Protection Act passed by the Uttarakhand Assembly in 2007. The Mohaan cattle fair that had been going on for decades till 2009 before it became a contentious event with the right wing Hindu activists calling for its closure alleging that it was resulting in the slaughter of oxen that weare traded. Pratap and his supporters have been accusing them of harassing minorities while making such allegations. People from Pauri Garhwal, Almora and Nainital districts used to sell the old oxen at the fair to those coming from the villages in the plains. |
