NSUI chief: The newly elected state chief of the
NSUI, Yadupati Thakur, has expressed concern over the deteriorating system of education in the state. Talking to mediapersons here on Thursday, Yadupati Thakur said a number of universities were mushrooming all over the state under the patronage of the government. DALHOUSIE
Annual function: The annual day-cum-prize distribution function of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Bakloh Cantonment, was organised on Wednesday on the KV campus. The programme was inaugurated by the 18 Dogra Regiment Commanding Officer, Col Ravi Chandar. Principal SS Duha presented the school report for 2010-11 and apprised parents and other dignitaries of the academic and extracurricular achievements of students. 3 booked: Three unidentified assailants wearing masks and gloves were booked by the police at the Kihar police station located on the border of Chamba district with Jammu and Kashmir state on Wednesday, SP, Chamba, Madhu Sudan Sharma said. The SP said they had been booked for assaulting a private school owner, Vijay Kumar, at Jei village under the Kihar police station. MANDI
‘Takniki sahayaks’: Taking a cue from Anna Hazare, over 50 “takniki sahayaks”, working in gram panchayats in the district, on Thursday staged a silent protest march here and requested the Chief Minister to regularise their services and put in place a proper contract policy for new recruits. According to Takniki Sahayak Sangh leaders Kashmir Chand and Vijendra Kumar, they have put in more than 10 years in service, but the government has not regularised them so far.

Fire in house at Indiresh Nagar: House of utensil seller Ramu at Indiresh Nagar caught fire on Thursday after he and his wife left to sell utensils. His wife, who was observing fast had lit a lantern lamp before the idol and left the house locked. When the neighbors saw the smoke billowing out of the house, they called the police. The cylinders were taken out first to avert the fire to spread further. Most of the things kept in the house got burnt. Man arrested
with pistol: The Vikasnagar police has arrested Kuldeep, an alleged notorious criminal of the area, with a country-made pistol and two live cartridges. A case under the Arms Act has been registered against him. Official to inspect road work: To speed up the road building work under way in different parts of the city, the Urban Development Department has deputed a senior programme official with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) officials to regularly inspect the quality of work under way. The officials of the bank have been given the additional responsibility to oversee the progress of the road laying work that is being undertaken after laying of water supply and sewerage pipes. On November 17, chief secretary Subhash Kumar had instructed the programme officials to speed up the work. The Urban Development Department has also deputed engineers to ensure proper checks while undertaking repair work.

Man killed in accident: A resident of Chorgaliya was killed when his motorcycle was run over by a dumper. The deceased has been identified as Gaurav Parihar (28), who originally hailed from the Pataliya Nartola area of Okhalkanda. He was on his way to a factory in the State Infrastructure and Industrial Development Corporation of Uttaranchal (SIDCUL) hub when the accident took place. He died on the spot. The incident led to a protest by people. The dumper driver is still at large.
Motorcyclist killed: A motorcyclist was killed when his speeding vehicle hit a tree near Naya Lal Dhang village in the Haldua area of Nainita district. The deceased has been identified as Jogesh Kumar (23) of Pomnakalan village of Hathras in Uttar Pradesh. He was employed in a factory in Mahuvahedaganj in Kashipur and had come to visit the Garjiya temple in Ramnagar on his motorcycle. He was returning to Kashipur along with a pillion rider when the accident took place. Both the injured persons were taken to the hospital. Jogesh was declared dead on arrival. Man crushed by tanker:
A 34-year-old resident of Gaujajali Bichli village near Haldwani was killed after he was crushed by a tanker in Haldwani. The deceased, Rajpal Singh Bora, had come to the Chintimajra area of the town along with his father Tej Singh Bora to participate in a marriage ceremony. The two were going towards Maharana Pratap chowk on a motorcycle when they were hit by the tanker from behind. The two were taken to a medical facility from where they were referred to a hospital in Haldwani. Rajpal died while being treated. Residents demand linking of road:
The residents of the Dhurafat area of Betalghat block of Nainital district have threatened to boycott the forthcoming Assembly polls if the government fails to link the area with the main road. To send across their point, hundreds of villagers from the area had staged a massive protest in the Kaushyakutaoli Tehsil premises on Wednesday. The residents had come from 17 villages of the area claiming that despite the project having been cleared, the execution of work has not been completed. They said they still had to travel a lot to reach a road head. Late train arrivals:
Rail travellers to Kumaon continue to be a harried lot on account of the delays in the running of trains joining the region to the national capital, state capital and other cities. The passengers going to the hilly terrain are often unable to find conveyance to their destinations on account of the late arrival of trains.
