IAS officer’s son found dead

Abhishek Kapoor, son of the Principal Secretary of Tribal Development of Himachal Pradesh, was found dead in the room No. 501 of the Himachal Bhavan in Sector 28 here today. He was 28.

Jail inmate, head constable go missing

A Burail Jail inmate who had come for a trial hearing at the district courts went missing under mysterious circumstances along with UT police head constable Amarjeet Singh this afternoon.

At least 50 promising sportspersons in the under-11 category, representing various primary schools in Haryana, were made to shiver in the cold outside Tau Devi Lal Stadium for more than two hours last night, thanks to the indifferent attitude of officials of the Haryana Sports Department who failed to make arrangements for the stay of the children.

Girls’ links with peddler baffles cops

The PEC connection to the drug mafia which came to light with the arrest of Devinder Kumar, a drug peddler, on Sunday, has proved to be a major lead to an intricate web that he had woven by roping in students from local institutes, particularly girls. He would boast about “purity of material” in his consignment as part of his “exclusive student services”.

GMADA gets lucky with commercial sites too

Continuing with the trend of auction that saw a sudden demand for residential property yesterday, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) today netted Rs 78.32 lakh by selling 42 commercial sites, including booths.

Holes in PU semester examination system

Panjab University (PU) may have implemented the semester system, but the departments are yet to even get a hang of the system. Thousands of students are affected due to the erratic examination schedule and hundreds of examination wing officials are cribbing about the datesheets prepared on the pattern of the annual examination supposedly distinctively different from the semester.

Garbage dumped beside a residential block at Sector 28 in Chandigarh. For residents of this ward, it is a blessing that the Member of Parliament resides in this area. Hence, they have not been facing petty civic problems. Still, there is a list of problems. It includes monkey menace, mismanaged garbage collection and non-maintenance of parks.

Congress going in for change
Chandigarh, November 22
Major changes are expected in the list of Congress candidates for municipal corporation (MC) elections. Sources in the party said the ticket of former Senior Deputy Mayor Bhupinder Singh Badheri from ward 10 had been cancelled and youth leader Jasbir Singh Banti would contest in his place.

Chargesheet filed against accused
Mohali, November 22
The cyber wing of State Crime Branch has chargesheeted Sunny Dhiman (23), presently in judicial custody, for allegedly uploading an obscene video of a girl on Youtube. The girl, an MBA student, had friendly relations with the accused.

MES contractors continue stir

Contractors of military engineering services (MES) continued their strike for the second day at the TCP chowk near Red Bishop here today. They have been protesting against the non-payment of bills for the past about three months by the Army authorities.

Candidates want Punjabi type test to be cancelled
Mohali, November 22
A delegation of the new Punjab Subordinate Sangarsh Committee today met Subordinate Staff Selection Board (SSSB) chairman Santa Singh Umedpur demanding that the Punjabi type test should be cancelled and they should be given appointment letters for the post of clerks. A total of the 530 posts were advertised by the SSSB in July, 2011, and it was mentioned that the candidates in merit would have to pass Punjabi type test as per government instructions.

350 UT staff get training

Kharar/Zirakpur : Road mishaps claimed the lives of two persons here today. In the first incident, Gurbachan Singh, a resident of Balopur village, died after his car was hit by an SUV that was coming from Patiala side. 

5 armoured regiments to be awarded ‘Standards’

A tank rehearsal under way in Patiala. With a fleet of as many as 300 tanks participating in the parade before President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil on November 27, the royal city of Patiala will get a rare distinction of becoming the second place in India, post-Independence, wherein the President would present “The Standards” to the five armoured regiments.

The high court has already restrained the University Business School (UBS) from making PhD admissions on the basis of its final list after students approached the court seeking quashing of the list.

A local court here has granted bail to Inderjit Singh Malik (21), the main accused in the kidnapping case of a teenager, who belonged to an erstwhile royal family from Himachal Pradesh.

Drug peddler gets 8-yr RI

A local court today awarded eight-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) to a drug peddler in a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act dating back to July 24, 2008.

3-day police remand for visa fraudsters
Chandigarh, November 22
The two immigration fraud accused were produced in a local court today and sent to three-day police remand. The accused, Vikram Sharma of Chandigarh and Vinay Chadha of Zirakpur, were arrested on November 18.

With the arrest of three persons, including a minor, the Central Intelligence Agency of Kharar has claimed to have solved eight cases of snatching, robbery and theft that occurred in Zirakpur, Matour and Mohali.
