One more dimension!
Manpriya Khurana

James Cameron didn’t expect that Titanic would generate $1.8 billion. He is said to have joked — “It was a pleasant surprise, an unlikely triumph for a three-hour flick whose ending everybody knew.” Fast forward: Cameron’s all set to bring Titanic back to cinemas! While some might question — who’d watch it; who wouldn’t like to watch the large ship sink in three dimensions! A team of 300 technicians is spending 60 weeks converting the original, painstakingly cutting out objects on screen and pushing some to the foreground, some to the background. The work will cost $18m!

Titanic remains the one movie, but not the only one. Shares Sanjay Chauhan, student, Frameboxx, “No doubt, Titanic is one movie that everyone would like to watch in this format, but there are a lot of other movies that should be restored, for example Avatar.” Yet another from the house of Cameron! While for the Titanic Cameron, has been quoted as saying, “This is not about money, it’s about giving people an opportunity to see Titanic in movie theatres again.”

Shahrukh Khan’s 3-D avatar
Shahrukh Khan’s 3-D avatar

Then there are some who want to watch Hollywood stunt and action thrillers in this format. Rahul Sharma, another animation student at Frameboxx, would like to revisit theatres only to watch Transformers. “That’s’ because only the action genre is best suited to 3D. Apart from action, people might want to watch horror flicks in this format.”

The Titanic project too is at the cutting edge of Hollywood’s latest trend; courtesy the advent of 3D technology. Film studios have suddenly realised that they can mint new money from old ideas, by converting classic movies into the new format and putting them in cinemas once more. Chips in Nikhil Chhabra, pursuing a degree in visual effects and 3D, “For me, it’s Spiderman and Batman that the 3D technology would be most suited to.” As for Bollywood, he fumbles for a couple of titles before adding, “May be, Krrish or upcoming Don 2.” In between, there are lots of murmurs for Jurassic Park, Anaconda, Fast and the Furious, The Transporter… some of the young loyalists even hoot for all the Jackie Chan movies, to be restored in 3D technology.

Nothing from the stable of B-town? A couple of politically incorrect quotes; till someone comes up with Sholay. “The train scenes, especially, would be interesting. Plus it had some great cinematography.” Till the time a study officially declares the ten best movies to be converted into this format, we have to make-do with the obvious, apparent choices. And while the three-dimensional technology is all set to re-enter mainstream cinema, no one’s looking forward to tear-jerkers or even great story-telling. Anything exciting on a technical level, bring it on!

success mantra
On a joyride
Jasmine Singh

All great discoveries have started with a thought. In this case, it was providing a simple and convenient mode of conveyance. So, with the right foresight and dedication, Pahwa Brothers formed a company in 1952 called Avon Cycles, which went on to change the face of travel in Punjab. At that time, the company rolled out 250 bicycles. And it was certain principles that Onkar Singh Pahwa, managing director held on to that makes Avon Cycles Ltd an established name. He shares his success mantra with us and how they made all the difference.

Transparency: “My father and uncle started this company under a strong value system. The subject was very clear - they wanted to provide a mode of conveyance, which they did in a transparent manner. They started by manufacturing bicycle saddles and brakes. It was a long journey, but we always maintained that whatever we do should be transparent and clear. The organisation combined both simplicity and new ideas in business, which has brought us this far.”

Work hard: “Nothing on this earth can be achieved without hardwork. When I took over the managing director’s role in 2003, I couldn’t just sit on the success - I had to work hard to get in newer ideas so that we could take the company forward. The target audience was clear; we had to bring in newer range of bicycles for kids in the age group of 2-15 years. The idea was that every child should buy at least six bicycles. Cycling is something that is not popular with youngsters; with Avon Cycles we want to change the cycling experience and also making them fit and healthy.”

Customer’s needs: “First we were making black bicycles and then we decided to provide a fresh look. We understood customer needs and also read how markets in Europe operated. We went on to design unisex bicycles that made cycling pleasurable. In the present scenario, we have come up with stationary bicycles.”

Team work: “Each worker at every level in the company is important for me. I welcome new ideas from them. The staff has taken the company to the place it is at today, which is why every single person is important to us. As far as possible, I try to catch up with the staff and discuss problems.”

Keep evolving: “Encouraging new ideas is important for the development of the company. Time is changing and so are the needs of the customers. We can’t be hell bent on selling bicycles to youngsters above the age of 18 because we know they would like to ride a bike or car. All the same, we want to encourage cycling so that people can be fit and healthy.”

Happy 65 courtesy sex!
Survey based on 238 married individuals aged 65 years or older

The more often married individuals above the age of 65 engage in sex, the more likely they are to be happy with both their lives and marriages. Based on the survey responses of 238 married individuals aged 65 years or older, Adrienne Jackson found that frequency of sex significantly predicted both general and marital happiness.

The link even remained after accounting for factors such as age, gender, health status, and satisfaction with financial situations, said Jackson, assistant professor at Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University.

While only 40 per cent of individuals who reported no sexual activity in the last 12 months said they were very happy with life in general, almost 60 per cent who engaged in sexual activity more than once a month said they were very happy, according to a Florida statement.

Similarly, while about 59 per cent of individuals who reported no sexual activity in the last 12 months said they were very happy with their marriage, almost 80 per cent who had sex more than once a month said they were very happy.

To assess frequency of sexual activity, respondents were asked the following question: “About how many times did you have sex during the last 12 months? By ‘sex’ we mean vaginal, oral, or anal sex.”

To assess general happiness, respondents were asked the following question: “Taken all together, how would you say things are these days — would you say that you are very happy, pretty happy, or not too happy?”

To assess marital happiness, respondents were asked the following question: “Taking things all together, how would you describe your marriage? Would you say that your marriage is very happy, pretty happy, or not too happy?” These findings were presented at The Gerontological Society of America’s (GSA) 64th Annual Scientific Meeting in Boston. —IANS

Changing FACE
In this tech-savvy world, more and more moms are joining social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook

Latest research says that there are more and more mommies who are visiting social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. Thank god, the ladies have something better to do apart from watching saas bahu serials! During the survey, Lucid Marketing and Lisa Finn found a whopping 96.3% of the moms who said they used Facebook to keep in touch with family and friends.

Now these moms are surely tech savvy or pester their kids to at least teach them how to activate and run an account on any of the social networking sites, especially Facebook! Some of them get in touch with long lost friends and some of them make new friends.

Says Ranu Gill, Chandigarh-based housewife who is on Facebook since a year-and-a-half now, “I used to hear a lot about Facebook, which motivated me to open my own account. The most amazing thing is that I got in touch with my old friends.” As her elder daughter is married and the younger one is working in Dubai, Ranu has all the time to sit on her laptop and exchange pleasantries on Facebook. She adds, “Facebook is all about staying connected and I love it.”

On the other hand, the women who have become mothers recently have an overwhelming experience. Says Gitika Chadha, Chandigarh-based housewife, “I visit Facebook while my four-month-old baby girl Samira is sleeping to glory. Some of my friends have recently become mothers and we share a lot of things on Facebook.” She adds, “I also keep posting pictures and updating various things about Samira.” Then there are others who have started taking their children’s suggestions and applying them.

Says Sonia Ahuja, a Chandigarh-based fashion designer, “I opened my Facebook account nine months back only because my kids told me to do so and I got in touch with so many of my old friends through it.” She adds, “The highlighting feature of Facebook is that it keeps you connected with your ‘close’ ones. I have also activated it on my cellphone, so it is easier to use it.”

Social networking sites have more advantages beyond just getting in touch with friends - one can market their business online and get in touch with clients. Says Shelly from Shelly’s Wardrobe, Sector-8, Chandigarh, “Apart from getting in touch with my friends on Facebook I also share information about fresh stock with my clients.” She adds, “I even have pictures of the opening of my new showroom. Whenever I wear something from my stock, I click my pictures and update them on Facebook just to let the ladies know how a particular outfit looks.”

Carry on mommies!

Par Excellence
The oft-repeated Head Up
Jesse Grewal

How many times have you heard golfers say that they have to keep their head down through the golf swing? Every bad shot seem to be blamed on 'head up'. Tops, duffs, shanks all seem to have one cause! If this were true golf instruction would be easy-just make sure that the head stays down. But unfortunately this is one of the worst pieces of advice as it stops the turning action of the body through the swing and does not allow the weight to the left (for right handed players). If one does not view the flight of the ball, we certainly would have a lot of lost balls!

The correct terminology would be to 'keep your eyes on the ball'. This would keep your head steady till impact and allow your head to turn on the follow through as your eyes follow the flight of the ball. This turning action of the head would allow the shoulders to turn through and the weight to shift to the left.

Poor contact with the ball happens when the spine angle changes through the swing and this could happen despite a focus of your eyes on the ball. The common cause of this would be an incorrect posture at address. At the end of the follow through we should still maintain our spine angle but should have completed our body turn towards the target with the hips, shoulders and head facing the target (picture 1 & 3). If the head is kept down, we are unable to complete the swing and would be hitting primarily with the hands (picture 2 & 4). So, keep your eyes on the ball and let your eyes follow the ball as we would do in any other game. To train the body to maintain your spine angle place a club across your shoulders and learn to turn the shoulders at a right angle to the spine(picture 5 & 6).

Doc, a click away

Tired of waiting for your turn to see a doctor in an OPD or even the never ending search for the right doctor? MediAngels.com, an e-super specialty medical consultation platform will now bring the super specialist to the patient's living room.

Literally so, as the world's top 350 super specialists from 20 countries and 90 super specialised medical disciplines come together on the MediAngels' e-healthcare platform for a fee ranging from Rs 250 to Rs 5,000.

Started by two super-specialists themselves, Dr Arbinder Singal and Dr Debraj Shome, MediAngels provides comprehensive super-specialty services such as consultations, blood tests and electronic medical records to patients from the comfort of their homes and at a time convenient to them.

MediAngels started as an outcome of Dr Debraj Shome and Dr Arbinder Singal's personal experiences in complicated health situations. While Dr Shome and Dr Singal had the contacts in the medical community and the know-how to take a second opinion to save their family members, a common man may not have this facility and that triggered the concept of MediAngels.

"Many a times when patients are faced with difficult health situations or surgeries, they want to know if there is some other option available. Having worked in the US and UK and the best hospitals in India, we realised how technology can save lives and we aim to make the right doctor and right advice available through technology," says Dr Arbinder Singal.

MediAngels super specialist panel boasts of doctors from top healthcare institutions around the world. This includes Stanford University, Harvard University Hospital, John Hopkins (USA), Fortis and Apollo Hospitals (India), National University Hospital (Singapore) and Bumrungrad Hospital (Bangkok). — TNS

Goodbye vegetarian, hello flexitarian!

The number of consumers who are reducing their consumption of animal-based products is on the rise in the US, a new study has found. Professionals from the Institute of Food Technologists have also found that the number of consumers who follow strict vegetarian or vegan diets in the US is relatively small.

These ‘occasional’ vegetarians, who are also called flexitarians, can be categorised into two groups, semi-vegetarians and meat reducers.

While semi-vegetarians follow a vegetarian diet part of the time but still eat some meat and dairy products, meat reducers are not trying to follow a vegetarian diet. —ANI

Gender bias?
Why do actresses get dropped out of sequels while men are not...

Making a mark: Neha Dhupia

With filmmakers churning out sequels to her hit films like Kyaa Kool Hai Hum, Shootout at Lokhandwala and Ek Chalis Ki Last Local, actress Neha Dhupia is clueless as to why the women are dropped from the subsequent outings of the movie.

“I don’t know why women are dropped from sequels. It is a male dominated industry and it is entirely up to the director who he wants in the film. But I am glad that most of the films I did are being made into sequels. These films had left a mark, hence they are made into sequels and it feels great to be part of the first part,” Neha said in an interview.

Kyaa Kool Hai Hum (2005), a comedy starred Ritesh Deshmukh, Tusshar Kapoor, Eesha Koppikar and Neha. The sequel Kyaa Super Kool Hai Hum, for which the shooting has begun, stars Tusshar and Ritesh. The new additions include Bipasha Basu, Chunky Pandey and Sarah Jane Dias. It is scheduled to release on April 6 next year.

For Ek Chalis Ki Last Local (2007), which starred Abhay Deol and Neha, the sequel might be titled - Gyarah Chalis Ki Last Metr and will star Vivek Oberoi.

Then, a sequel to Apoorva Lakhia’s 2007 film Shootout at Lokhandwala is being made. Shootout at Wadala revolves around the encounter of gangster Manya Surve and actors Anil Kapoor, John Abraham, Vivek Oberoi have been finalised for the project with rumors of Vidya Balan being roped in.

All the three films featured Neha in pivotal roles and did good business. But the actress can’t quite understand why stories are left untold in the first part if there is more happening to it.

“I feel if there was a story or something more to tell than why it wasn’t told in the first part. But I am proud to be associated with films that are now being made into sequels,” Neha said. — PTI

Paris calling…

GAME FOR IT: Beckham family

David Beckham is planning to shift to Paris along with his family, after he seals a multi-million pound deal with one of the city’s most prominent team—Qatari-owned Paris St Germain. “David is all geared up for the cup final but after that he and Victoria will make the decision over whether or not to accept the Paris deal,” said a source.

“They want to stay in the States long term but an 18-month period living in Paris is attractive on so many levels. Victoria has always liked the idea of living there and now she is heavily involved in the fashion industry she loves the idea of being surrounded by so many creative influences in the fashion capital of the world. Both her and David also agree they’d like the boys to experience a culture away from the slightly surreal world of Hollywood,” saida source. — ANI

Name game begins

Doting dad: Abhishek Bachchan

Actor Abhishek Bachchan, who recently became the father of a baby girl, has thanked his fans for their good wishes and is now asking them to suggest names for his newborn.

“And suggestions for names are very welcome guys. Something with “A”,” the 35-year-old posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.

His wife, Aishwarya Rai, gave birth to their first child October 16 at Mumbai’s Seven Hills Hospital and since then, the Bachchan family is receiving congratulatory messages from around the globe.

“To receive all this love from all of you. Oh ya! And our crew grows past 800,000. A huge welcome to all the new ones...And the congratulatory messages still pour in. Thank you so much guys. All of you are wonderful and so sweet. My daughter is so blessed,” he further posted.

While Abhishek is enjoying his fatherhood, megastar Amitabh is in seventh heaven after becoming a grandfather for the third time and says it is difficult for him to stay away from his granddaughter.

“Difficult to tear yourself away from the ‘little one’, but now home to replay videos and stills and wait for her to come home...Shooting 3D camera stills and movie of the ‘little one’... Amazing! Child is the Father of man... Never had this at my birth,” the 69-year-old posted. — IANS

Alluring bid

Super villain: Michael Shannon

Hollywood actor Michael Shannon was shocked when ‘Man of Steel’ director Zack Snyder offered him the role of super-villain General Zod in the new Superman film.

The 37-year-old Oscar-nominated actor says meeting with director Snyder was one of the most surreal experiences of his life, as he couldn’t understand how the role was just plonked in his lap.

“It was one of the most surreal experiences of my life because I was against this panoramic window, looking out on these beautiful hills, rose bushes and hummingbirds while Zack was saying, ‘And then, on Krypton, this happens’,” he said.

“By the end, I was kind of confused. I was like, ‘Is this an offer or not?’ We shook hands and he said he wanted me as Zod. I was thinking, ‘There’s something wrong here. This is one of the largest films around. I’m not Robert De Niro - I don’t understand why this is being plonked on my lap’,” he added.

Although the director was keen to cast Shannon in the movie, the actor had to take part in a chemistry test with leading man Henry Cavill, who is playing Superman, which made him wonder whether the pair were expected to make out.

“Warner Bros said they needed to see me and Henry together first. They called it a ‘Chemistry Test’. I was like, ‘What, do Zod and Superman make out? You want to see if any sparks fly?” Shannon said. — PTI

Classic cut for Lopez

glamour girl: Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez likes to dress in a classic way and doesn’t really follow fashion trends. The singer-and-actress says she doesn’t really go for trendy clothing and would rather pay homage to old school Hollywood glamour.

“I just do what I feel when it comes to my style. Even though I love things that are modern and new, I don’t really go big on trends that much. I keep it classic,” she said.

“I like a touch of sexiness and I love glamour — old school Hollywood glamour. I also come from the Bronx area in New York and grew up in the hip-hop area, so that style is very ingrained in me,” she added. — IANS

In love with Australia!

Awestruck Singer: Susan

Scottish Singer Susan is thinking of shifting to Australia as she fell in love with the country during her recent trip.

“Susan loved Australia, especially the weather. When they visited Bondi Beach, (Sydney) she couldn’t believe that you could live in a city and have such a nice beach nearby,” she said.

“She really wants a holiday home so she can spend more time there. She’s under strict instructions from friends and family to get a place with lots of bedrooms so everyone can come and visit,” the source added. — IANS

An orchid called Elton John

Singer Elton John has had a flower named after him at an orchid conference here.

The 64-year-old, an avid flower lover, flew out to the country to receive an honour at the 20th edition of World Orchid Conference. The orchid with large white petals and a golden forked lip is named Doritaenopsis Sir Elton John.

With the honour, John joins the league of people like late Princess Diana, actor Jackie Chan and South African icon Nelson Mandela, who have the blooms named after them.

“We’ve had orchids in our home all the time, so it’ll be great to grow our own, so we’re going to do that. I have had a lupine named after me and even a rose but never an orchid and this is a great honour as I am an avid lover of gardens,” said John. — IANS

Vishal all for children’s films

Filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj today said he was keen on making another film for children before the next edition of the International Children’s Film Festival (ICFF).

“I have an intention of making a children’s film, but not thought of a subject as such...I will definitely be making a children’s film and it would be ready by the next ICFF here,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the 17th edition of the film festival here.

The director-composer, who made his directorial debut with Makdee in 2002 and later the critically acclaimed Blue Umbrella said he did not have any qualms about funding the project, adding, right now he was busy making Bollywood films, composing music and was pre-occupied with other commitments.

Bhardwaj, who has been associated with Children’s Film Society of India (CFSI) since 1994, rued that producers did not seem interested in making more number of children’s films which is “very sad”.

He, however, said, “I am looking towards making a children’s film and it will happen in the near future.” — PTI

Chatter box
Business with pleasure

Actors falling in love while working 18 hours a day, seven days a week is common. We probe if mixing business with pleasure is an advantage or disadvantage, whether falling in love on the set affects their work equation and comfort level. Read on what most popular on and off screen couples have to say.

Comfort zone

Sushant Singh Rajput and Ankita Lokhande

Zee TV's Pavitra Rishta brought them together and as the show climbed TRP charts, their love too grew day by day as did their characters Manav and Archana. After two years of being in a hit show, Sushant proposed to a blushing Ankita on a reality show taking their relationship to a newer height. Ankita reveals, "If you learn and are able to keep work and relationship separate then it is an advantage. As for the comfort level, I think it is more to do with the kind of person you are. Sure, your partner would know more about you than the other friendly co-stars."

Thorough professionals

Rashmi Desai and Nandish Sandhu

Though not paired with each other in Color's Uttaran, Rashmi and Nandish fell in love while doing the show. While their characters hated each other on screen, their love blossomed off screen. Rashmi says, "Of course, it is great to be working on the same show with your partner as it gives you ample time to be with each other. If you are working on different shows then finding time to be with each other is tough as we TV actors have exacting schedules. The comfort level is great as he can judge my mood and help me when needed.”

Destined for love

Kritika Kamra and Karan Kundra

Two back to back seasons of Kitani Mohabbat Hai has solidified the relation of this young couple, Karan Kundra and Kritika Kamra. Karan claims, "It is surely an advantage to be in such a relationship as being television actors we hardly get time to spare. Either we are shooting or sleeping or just shooting non-stop. So, if you have a girlfriend on set, you can spend some time together at least. It was an awesome thing that destiny brought us together on the sets and at one point Arohi and Karan became Kritika and Karan. As for the comfort level as actors you should be able to do all scenes but surely if you are dating the other person, the chemistry is better. But I feel you should keep your work and love life separate.”

Debina Banerjee and Gurmeet Chaudhary

Work equation

Gurmeet Chaudhary and Debina Banerjee

Playing Ram and Sita in the mythological show Ramayan formed their real life love story. Happily married today, Gurmeet says, "We shared a comfort level while working but I can't say if that was due to us being involved or not. I can't be objective about it. It didn't affect our work equation except that we were always together. I can't say for sure if being in a relationship at work is an advantage or not."

Balanced views

Rubina Dilaik and Avinash Sachdev

They have played the eternal lovers Dev and Radhika in Zee's Choti Bahu for two seasons now. A much-loved couple, theirs wasn't love at first sight but with work keeping them together, love happened. Today the duo is engaged. Rubina shares her views, "Avinash and I maintain a thin line between personal and professional lives and don't mix them. As for comfort level, as an actor you have to be comfortable with the scenes you need to do romantic or not.”

Need for space

Ravi Dubey and Sargun Mehta

Sargun explains, "I think some space is ideal in a relationship.”Love struck them Love struck them on the sets of their Zee TV show 12/24 Karol Bagh and today while Ravi is busy with Sony’s Saas Bina Sasural and Sargun stars in Colors’ Phulwa, they are very much in love. Sargun explains, “We were attracted to each other during Karol Bagh but not in love. Working together has advantages as your comfort level is much better than a random co-star but yet I feel space is important.” —HRM
