Real vs reel
When a real-life story gets translated onto screen, it never comes without some controversy. Is it because people are hyper sensitive or is it because Bollywood spices them up?

Vidya Balan in Dirty Picture
Vidya Balan in Dirty Picture

Flying Sikh Milkha Singh is the man of the moment. His life story, which is embedded in courage, determination and faith, will be reaching out to the world soon through the silver screen. A place that creates and sells dreams, stories and everything it can lay its hands on. This is something Milkha Singh is excited about.

Director Rakesysh Omprakash Mehra will translate Milkha Singh's journey to Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, a movie starring Farhan Akhtar and Sonam Kapoor. Everything sounds great, until we shift the radar on the main issue-a real life incident, and whether the glitzy and glamorous Bollywood can justify it.

With Dirty Picture, a film inspired by real life character Silk Smitha, who ruled the South Indian industry in her sizzling style running into controversy, we try to find out what the audiences feel about movies based on real life characters and their rightful portrayal.

Who else but Milkha Singh to provide his take on this? The man is humble and he candidly talks about it. "I was approached by several directors, including Harry Baweja who wanted to make a movie on me. It was, however, Jeev Milkha Singh who decided to give my story to the director Rakesysh Omprakash Mehra in just rupee one. The idea was not to sell my story, but to make people sit up and acknowledge the fact that hard work and dedication can make a person touch the highest pedestal."

Milkha Singh, however, was pretty clear about what he wanted when he shared his story with the director. "I had strictly asked for two things. I want the movie to be released with my approval, and two if the movie makes any profit, 10-20 per cent of it would go to Milkha Singh Trust."

What about the 'directorial liberty', we ask him about this self-created term of Bollywood. He pauses for a second, and says, "Indeed, I want the director to do justice to my story. Without going overboard with the glamour element, I would want him to show the real Milkha."

When it comes to real-life inspired movies audiences want a replica movie. No One Killed Jessica, Dirty Picture, Bandit Queen, Ragini MMS or Bawandar, these movies have justified the 'reality' but not without adding spice and twists and turns.

A still from No One Killed Jessica
A still from No One Killed Jessica

City-based director Mukhesh Gautam defines controversies around real-life movies as part of the deal. "Making a movie in this genre is itself a challenging job. As a director, I think a real-life based movie cannot be translated on screen the way it is. The actors are not real people, at the same time it is important to see that a wrong message is not conveyed. If the end is tragic, the director has the right to change it accordingly so that a positive message is sent out."

As for Gautam, controversy or legal notices will keep rolling with such subjects. "People will never be satisfied, they will find one flaw or the other with the story," he says.

Whether it was Phoolan Devi objecting to her portrayal as 'wrong interpretation' by director Shekhar Kapoor or Deepika, the inspiration behind Ragini MMS not happy with what Ekta made, or the movie Hostel based on the Aman Kachroo ragging case, movies based on real life have always been fictionalised a bit.

For Sameer Singh Oberoi, assistant director working in Mumbai, "Audiences want to see real-life stories because they relate to such topics. All the same, they want it to be presented in an entertaining manner too. Movies which show stark reality, don't go down well with them. Some fiction and some realism this is how it works in Bollywood."

The focus clearly moves away from stark reality when it is movies on real life incidents. Audiences don't want documentaries; they want a good mix of reality and fiction. After all, watching a movie is a good stress beating exercise!

Mirza lives on
Punjabi actor Gippy Grewal to play a modern-day Mirza
Jasmine Singh

In most cases, it takes a while to understand your heart's calling. For Punjabi singer Gippy Grewal, it took two movies Mel Kara De Rabba and Jiney Mera Dil Luteya to come to an understanding as to where his heart lies. But, of course, movies!

His upcoming project as a lead actor in Mirza, The Untold Story will not only justify his heart but his acting as well. Directed by Baljit Singh Deo, Gippy is excited about his role in the movie. And before you slot it as a historical drama, the singer actor has a few things to share. "This is not a historical drama. Mirza The untold story is the story of modern day Mirza. The movie is shot entirely in outdoor locations, and is all set to give Punjabi cinema a new look," shares Gippy.

He readily elaborates on the new look for Punjabi cinema. "Mirza is technically very strong, the story, the camera, the treatment everything is very Bollywood. The expensive budget is another thing that makes it as big as any other Bollywood flick," he says talking about his look.

Gippy plays Mirza in the movie, which also stars actor Rahul Dev and singer Honey Singh, who makes his debut with the flick. "The look is rough and rugged, just like my character. Sometimes he is the bad guy, while at other times he play the good man. So, the audiences can't make up their mind where to slot me," Gippy smiles.

Vibrancy gets a new meaning at the Annual Art Exhibition organised by Bama Academy of Fine Art
Vasudha Gupta

Colours have an innate capacity to look beyond medium, boundaries and limits. Keeping this thought in mind, Bama Academy of Fine Arts, Panchkula, has brought the works all its students under one roof. The 13th annual art exhibition includes the works of people from all walks of life.

The entrance, a refreshing burst of colour is dedicated to the children. From the red and blues playing havoc on the canvas to the very mature strokes of water colours, there is not one piece of art that looks like a creation of a nine-year-old! Vinayak, a young nine-year-art expert, shows that maturity does not come with age. “His works show that he is capable of handling water colours,” says Ram Sharma, Director Bama Academy. From nature art to installation art, young students of the academy have been toiling hard to put forth their best colour forward!

Apart from the very young artists, art lovers have crossed over from different professions, regions and come together at the academy to pursue their passion in colours and brushes. Dr Vidhu Dhawan, a practicing doctor from PGI, has stolen time from her busy schedule to create Beauty Personified. “I remember that she came to me and told me that she had no time, but still loved art and made sure she remains committed to it,” Ram laughs.

Coming from Pinjore, Shyam comes from a rural background. His work Faces Of Infinity shows the turmoil of man in day-to-day life. Explaining the interesting piece of work, Ram says, “During the course of life, man is under a constant battle to create a balance in life.” The small instrument in the work shows ticking of the clock. On the other side is Buddha. “He too had his share of problems, but eventually moved on to stabilising them,” Ram adds. Meenu, who was among the first students of the academy and is now a lecturer, has reinvented the Ajanta Ellora art in her work using the floating technique. “It’s called love and faith and has been created with the monochromatic theme of brown,” says Meenu.

The exhibit is a true portrayal of the fact that expression can be done in different forms and techniques. Mukesh Minj’s Blossom has been painstakingly created with bits of papers and looks more broken in its appeal. Bringing together the elements of Krishna, the peacock, the lotus and the flute, Vijayata’s Zazen also promotes the thought of Buddha’s ideals and has a different texture all together. “It has been made with Zinc and fevicol,” Ram says.

Wheel of fortune
Elizabeth Taylor's trailer to be auctioned

A trailer used by late actress Elizabeth Taylor on the sets of 1963 movie "Cleopatra", is set to go under the hammer.

Cup of health

Green tea may be effective in reducing bad cholesterol, a study has found. Green tea contains antioxidant compounds called catechins, which many studies have tested for their effect on cholesterol even though the studies have been small and had conflicting results.

For the new study researchers at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California, pooled the results of these clinical trials, involving a total of 1,415 adults.

Participants in the trials consumed green tea beverages, capsules, or placebos daily. Benefits were found among people who had high cholesterol levels at the beginning of the study.

However, the researchers still sound a word of warning.

“If someone is already taking medication for their cholesterol, they should stick with it and not try to trade it for green tea, either capsules or the beverage,” CBS news quoted study author Dr. Olivia Phung as saying. According to the study, the use of herbal supplements like green tea is only one of the strategies to lower cholesterol. — ANI

First-day-first show
What a goof-up!

Shakal Pe Mat Ja is a story of four young boys who get caught up as suspects at the Delhi International Airport on a high alert day. With their explanation not being fruitful, they are brought into the interrogation room of the airport to be questioned by the CISF.

These simple guys get into a maddening situation, as the plot goes through unexpected twists and turns. It is a film about deceptive goof-ups, mistaken identities and misfortune that befalls on people for no other reasons but for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Innocent looking maniacs, amateur terrorist groups and security forces that are never on time!

Starring: Pratik Katare, Saurabh Shukla, Raghuveer Yadav and Aamna Shariff.

Confused comedy

The movie is funny, but only in bits and parts. There is too much of loud background music and utter confusion that makes you laugh in case if you miss the intended humour part.

— Dolly Singh, BA second year, GGDSD College

Stale idea

There are average performances by the actors but Saurabh Shukla definitely is the saving grace. Some stereotypical props have been used which could be replaced by some innovative and out-of-the-box items.

— Vani Kohli, B.com third year, Khalsa College

Forcefully funny

There is a sincere effort by the newbies but the movie is not at all impressive or catchy. It is a waste of time and demands forced laughter.

— Sahil Saini, law student, PU (As told to Sabia Talwar)

Are they too sexy for you?

Sexy Sheela: Katrina Kaif in Tees Maar Khan; Hot favourite: Deepika Padukone in Dum Maro Dum

She gulps down desi tharra, smokes pot, mouths expletives, talks naughty, exposes like never before and doesn't mind some sultry moves—that's the new age, raunchy, naughty and bold Hindi film heroine for you.

From the Chhor do anchal zamana kya kahega coy woman to the "I'm too sexy for you”babe— the Bollywood heroine has come of age.

Be it Nargis Fakhri's desire to drink tharra and watch soft porn in Rockstar, Vidya Balan's sensual and titillating looks in The Dirty Picture, Sonam Kapoor's confident display of the middle finger in Players, Katrina Kaif's drunken act in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan or even Rani Mukerji's uninhibited mouthing of expletives in No One Killed Jessica — the bold drift is wide and visible on the big screen.

Madhwan with Kangana Ranaut in Tanu Weds Manu
Madhwan with Kangana Ranaut in Tanu Weds Manu

"Basically, cinema reflects what happens in society. So the homemaker, subservient, silent sufferer and pativrata woman of yesterday, was what was shown in Hindi movies earlier. But as times changed and society became more democratic and liberal, the woman's portrayal underwent a change on the big screen too," says film critic Omar Qureshi.

"Today, women live with the 'double income, no kids' mantra, they go to work, some don't mind living life alone, some don't mind extramarital affairs...they socialise, party, drink and smoke...so that is clearly reflecting in cinema as well," added Qureshi.

Some other films with actresses in bold roles include Delhi Belly, Ishqiya, Shaitan, Tanu Weds Manu, Jism, Saat Khoon Maaf, Dum Maro Dum and Girlfriend. In some, girls were shown consuming drugs and locking lips with the same sex.

Young producer Ekta Kapoor has pinned her hopes on The Dirty Picture, in which Vidya plays a bold, saucy role. But she feels yesteryear films were more titillating.

"My film The Dirty Picture is about a woman revelling in her sexuality. There is a very definite line between sexuality and raunchiness, and our story is about this woman who lived her life with aplomb. It is a brave and bold performance, no doubt, but one needs to see how actresses are getting more comfortable in their skin nowadays," said Ekta.

"Earlier, actresses used to play so-called 'sati savitris' and used to be covered in wet dupattas or saris. I think that used to look more suggestive and raunchy," she added.

When acclaimed filmmaker Rajkumar Gupta made romantic Rani mouth cuss words and smoke in No One Killed Jessica, he had explained: "The abuses have been used to define attitude and not in a derogatory sense. These days abuses are a part and parcel of conversational language and we didn't feel that there was any harm in using them."

The trend is only becoming rampant for many reasons - viewer's open-mindedness, directors' daring attitude to show a realistic portrayal, actress' confidence and producers' risk-taking ability.

"The sexy and bold woman was restricted only to the vamp in Indian films earlier. She would do the seducing act back then because a heroine was to be shown doing all 'ideal' things. At that time, producers didn't want to take a chance by showing a heroine doing 'bad' things and plus. Nowadays the audience is also more exposed - so they have a wider perspective about women and their sexuality," said Qureshi.

Writer-actor Manu Rishi, who penned dialogues for films like Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye and Aisha, says stories of the 'bad and naughty one' always turn out to be attention-grabbers.

"He said it because no one wants to either read about homemakers; neither does anyone want to write about them. Now if both heroines of Dev D were asked to talk like Juhi Chawla spoke in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak or like Bhagyashree did in Maine Pyar Kiya, imagine how they would sound!

"Just like a sharp-tongued girl causes a crowd on the streets, films with such female characters draw a huge crowd." — IANS

POSITIVE APPROACH: Nargis Fakhri

But such rash comments don't bother Nargis at all as when asked she said, "God! I got so many comments and that is good.

It will help me grow as an actor and rectify my loop holes."

I think the government should help them as they provide great services to people.

I recently caught the trailers of Desi Boyz and loved it. I am a fan of Akshay Kumar and John Abraham.  Though the film will release next week I will definitely watch this film. It has comedy, romance and songs- full on entertainment.

Shopping diaries

I hope to finish shooting early this weekend and pack up by afternoon today. I have plans to go shopping with friends and have fun. I love shopping and I make very random choices. I never plan my shopping expeditions or anything thing else. It’s always fun hanging out with friends.

The year ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is November 19...

If someone were to hold a popularity contest, you would easily win it. Your ability to intuit what makes people tick is very attractive. People don’t feel they have to explain themselves to you. Rubbing shoulders with creative people fuels your own artistic impulses. Let a friend introduce you to poetry, photography, or dance. With their guidance, you can create works of beauty. Best of all, exercising your imagination will attract the attention of a sexy admirer. This is what can be said on your birthday this year, which gives greater will power and self-confidence, and very often a rather original approach; but with this, a somewhat self-centered approach to life that may be in conflict with some of the other influences in your life. It is not an easy moment and even if you feel your presence in darkness, light will come your way, albeit hidden. For now, you are not advised to confide all your thoughts in those around you. Keep your integrity in silence. Partner up for best results, whether it’s work or your workout; your self-motivation is liable to be a little lacking and someone else keeps you in motion. Be attentive and concentrate so you don’t miss out on occasions which will be offered to you. The stars recommend patience. You can expect little help from friends. An ‘emotional discussion’ seems highly likely but is ‘ultimately constructive’ and just may ‘solve any big or old problem.’ An invitation may require travel at that time or plans/money devoted to a near future event. Your financial condition will improve. You’ll however need favour from your co-workers or power people. State of mind: Energetic. Compatible signs: Capricorn, Gemini. Lucky colours: Grey, Electric blue. Lucky days:  Saturday and Sunday. Lucky numbers: 2, 7, 13, 22, 37. Lucky gem: Ruby – Gemstone of the Sun. Lucky Flower: Daffodil
