Tehsildar’s absence irks public
Fatehgarh Sahib November 18 People had to face inconvenience to register their documents. Around hundred of property buyers and sellers today resented the routine absence of tehsildar from his office and held a protest at the local SDM in this context, who also expressed his helplessness. The people gathered in a large number at tehsil office said, the local tehsildar remains absent from his office occasionally and registers the document after five till late in the evening which causing great inconvenience to them. They said the buyers and sellers carry a huge amount of cash with them. They said they have waited till 6.30 pm today but the tehsildar did not turn up, while the staff of his office kept on asking to wait for half and hour more for he was coming. The people said they also approached the office of Deputy Commissioner, who assured to look into the matter. Sources said DC sought explanation from the tehsildar for not registering any document today and warned him that he has caused a huge loss of revenue to the government by not registering the documents and also caused great inconvenience to the public. He warned him not to harass the public. When contacted, Rajinder Oberoi Tehsildar, said he was in some village to take the possession of land as per the order of court. They have to perform the other work related to Executive Magistrate, so naturally the registration work will suffer, he added. He did not answer about the harassment of people and revenue loss to government and said government should think about it. When contacted Deputy Commissioner, Yashveer Mahajan, he said people have brought the matter to his notice and he has sought Rajinder’s explanation. He assured in future the registration work will not be affected and if any officer caused inconvenience to public, he would to pay the price. |

Cash stolen from car, accused arrested
Dera Bassi, November 18 Meanwhile, SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the mastermind of the incident was none other than car driver who left the car opened as per plan in the parking of a hotel, during dinner. As per reports, Jitender, a resident of Ambala city, along with Bharat of Ambala, were returning to Ambala in a Santro car with a collection of Rs 12 lakh from customers in tricity. They stopped for dinner at a hotel in Dera Bassi on highway around 9.45 pm on Monday night. The cash was in the Santro car parked in front of the hotel. He found cash and cell phone missing on return. Bhullar said car driver could not give satisfactory answers during investigations by CIA and the local police. At last, he broke down and confessed his crime. He said Bharat had already informed his two accomplices that he would leave the car unlocked before Sartaj hotel. As per plan, Anshul and Vishal, residents of Housing Board colony, Baldev Nagar, Ambalam, chased the car and decamped with the cash and cell phone. |

Inter-zonal folk festival to mark cultural fiesta
Patiala, November 18 Dr SS Tiwana, dean Academic Affairs, said various faculties and the departments of the university have planned to organise seminars and symposia in addition to the folk festival. The folk festival, being organised by the Youth Welfare Department, will be held from November 19 to 20, while the distance education department will hold a seminar on ‘Role and Challenges of Distance Education’ on November 19. The other programmes slated for November 20 include a seminar by the faculties of Law, business studies and engineering and ‘kavi darbar’ by the youth welfare department. The faculty of social sciences will organise the first Social science conference, the music and dance departments will organise a cultural evening at Kala Bhawan of the University on November 21. The faculties of life sciences, physical sciences and medicine will organise a special academic programme on November 22, which will be followed by staging of a play by the theatre and TV department at 6 pm at Kala Bhawan. |

Chandigarh, November 18 This was Yadav’s second appearance before the court. She had earlier appeared before the court on August 27. Yadav had filed an application seeking permanent exemption from appearance on medical grounds and said that she suffered from lumbosacral spondilitis (back problem) and other ailments. However, the hearing was deferred to December 15, as the defence lawyer sought some more time (for arguments) from the court. The council for Yadav had moved an application, seeking permanent exemption from her personal court appearance on September 16. However, in its hearing on October 22, the CBI’s special court had directed Yadav to remain present in the court (on November 18), when the arguments on her plea for permanent exemption would be heard. The CBI had filed a charge-sheet against Yadav for corruption, conspiracy, destroying evidence and creation of false evidence in the court on March 4. At that time, Yadav was posted at the Uttarakhand High Court and was retired the same day. |

GGMSSS-18 bag hockey title
Chandigarh, November 18 In the U-17 boys’ event, DAV School, Sector 8, bagged the first position, while GMHS-42 and SGGS-26 secured the second and third position, respectively. Football DPS School, Sector 40, defeated St Kabir School-26 1-0 in the Inter-School Football Tournament (U-14 boys) at GMSSS-22A here today. The lone goal was scored by Parth Rastogi in the 48th minute of the game. In another match, St Joseph School-44 defeated St Stephen’s-45 4-3 in the tie-breaker. Earlier, Rinzeithan Shiza of St Stephen’s scored the first goal in the eight minute, while Arjun Rana of St Joseph scored the equaliser in the 35th minute. In the tiebreaker, Subhkarnam, Ankit and Pulkit scored for St Joseph, while Rinzeithan Shiza and Akshit scored for St Stephen’s. Cricket An excellent all-round performance by Pardeep (45 runs and five wickets) helped GMSSS-19 beat GMSSS-38 by 60 runs in the Inter-School Cricket Championship at DAV Senior Secondary School (Lahore), Sector 8 C, today. After winning the toss, GMSSS-38 decided to bowl first. GMSSS-19 put up a mammoth 131 runs in their allotted overs. Pardeep 45 and Nikhil 18 were the main scorers. For GMSSS-38, Prince and Gaurave took two and one wicket each, giving away nine and 28 runs, respectively. In reply, GMSSS-38 were bundled out for 71 runs. Rachit (26) and Abhay (25) were the main scorers. For GMSSS-19, Pardeep and Rahul demolished the batting lineup of the opposite team, as they took five and four wickets, giving away 17 and 22 runs, respectively. |
Second horse endurance today
Chandigarh, November 18 Sumrinder Sira, president of the PHSBS, in a press release today, said the race would cover 40 km, divided into two rounds of 20 km each. The prize money had been doubled to Rs 1 lakh this year, while the second and third prizes would be of Rs 51,000 and Rs 21,000, respectively. Sira said the average speed of the winning horses in the 40-km national endurance run was around 16 km per hour, whereas during the previous Punjab endurance meet held in April, the winner delivered a speed of 18.38 km per hour and that too by indigenous breed against high standard of performances generally attributed to other established horse breeds, especially the Army stock, which have dominated the endurance rides in the recent past. Col Sarpartap Singh, vice-president (technical) of the society, said after the first round, a medical check-up of the horses would be carried out by a team of doctors and only those whose pulse was under the prescribed limits would be allowed to take part in the second round. He said after the end of the first round, 15 minutes would be given to the riders to cool down their horses. They could use water and ice as per the requirement during the break. At the end of the second and final round, their pulse would again be checked. Those whose pulse was not within the prescribed limits would be disqualified, he added. He added that 60 horses from Rajasthan and Haryana, besides Punjab, were expected to participate in the meet. Free fodder for horses, free food for riders and those accompanying them would be provided along with tenting during the competition. Efforts were also being made to get the game included in the Commonwealth Games, he added. |

Wild card entry for Digvijay
Chandigarh, November 18 A CLTA release here today said 157 players from various parts of the country have signed up for qualifying events to be held on November 19 and 20. Competitions in under-12 boys (68 entries), under-14 boys (54 entries), under-12 girls (17 entries) and under-14 girls (18 entries) will be organised. The qualifying first round matches will be played at the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) Complex and the Lake Sport Complex, Chandigarh, from 8.30 am and 9 am, respectively, on November 19. The other players who have got the wild card for the main draw include: Boys under-14: Jagdeep Singh, Krishna Rajput, Rahul Verma; girls under-14: Shea Bhasin, Hiya Chaudhary , Rubani Ahluwalia; boys under-12: Calvin Golmei, Saurabh Prashar, Abhi Udai, Chiraz; girls’ under-12: Akshita Singh. |
