India wrap up match, series
Kolkata, November 17 The visitors ended at 463 in their second innings after following on, with Darren Bravo compiling a fine 136, his second century in three Tests, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Marlon Samuels showing cussed determination. So much so that at one stage it looked pretty probable that the Indians would have to mat again. Resuming at 195 for three, still 283 runs behind India’s first-inning score, Bravo and Chanderpaul had no intentions of throwing in the towel in a hurry. Their efforts were aided by the fact that whatever little juice the Eden pitch had, had dried up by now as the track back into a deep slumber, never responding to the bowlers’ efforts. The duo carried their efforts to a 108-run stand and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, running out of alternatives, had to opt for the new ball as soon as it was available, after exactly 80 overs. It got India the breakthrough as Chanderpaul’s tentative prod dragged an Umesh Yadav delivery onto his stumps and the hosts were breathing again. But their relief wasn’t long-lasting. Samuels did look like he would get out at any time, especially during the early stages of his knock. He tends to play predominantly off the back foot, which works fine on bouncy tracks. Here, however, it was a recipe of disaster, but it didn’t come too soon. Bravo on the other hand was in absolute command. He is a naturally attacking player but he kept his head down most of the time and kept the bowling at bay. But he was cowed down, and clobbered the poor stuff around with impunity. Bravo’s century came off 181 balls and four hours of batting, with 16 boundaries and four sixes. But it wasn’t a completely chanceless innings, a certain run-out being messed up by Gautam Gambhir’s errant throw with the batsman on 54. He had another reprieve after the hundred, with Australian umpire Bruce Oxenford saying not out after he had edged Pragyan Ojha onto his pads and into Gambhir’s hands at short-leg. But while the West Indians were making a fist of it, it was just a matter of one wicket in the post-lunch session. Bravo ultimately played the wrong line to the persistent Ojha for Rahul Dravid to grab the chance at slip. Once the left-hander was gone, the West Indies slide began. From 401 for three, they were reduced to 463 all out, with Dravid’s sharp one-handed catch at slip taking care of Carlton Baugh off Ojha. Ravichandran Ashwin the finally saw some success as he trapped Samuels in front, and then bowled Fidel Edwards through the gate. Yadav returned to remove Darren Sammy and Devendra Bishoo off consecutive deliveries to end up with four wickets for 80 runs. It was all over as India took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The action now shifts to the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai from November 22, where the West Indies will try to battle it out against India’s search for a sweep. Yuvraj dropped for 3rd Test as Rohit makes comeback
Kolkata, November 17 Sharma was rewarded for his consistent performance in domestic circuit with the selectors drafting him in place of the Punjab batsman who could manage only 66 runs in the three innings he played against the West Indies. With spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha doing well, Harbhajan Singh was again overlooked for a place in the squad, which barring Yuvraj's exclusion, remained the same. Yuvraj scored 23 and 18 in the first Test at Feroz Shah Kotla while he could manage only 25 on a batting paradise at the Eden Gardens. The exclusion could well mean curtains for the soon-to-be 30 southpaw who had won the Player of the Tournament award in the last World Cup. Rohit on the otherhand has been rewarded for his back to back centuries against Railways and Rajasthan. While the elegant batsman scored 175 on a turner at the Karnail Singh Stadium in New Delhi, he smashed a quickfire 100 against Rajasthan in the last Ranji Trophy match. Rohit was unlucky when he missed out on a Test cap after a freak injury while playing football at the VCA ground in Jamtha only an hour before the Test match against South Africa would have begun. With the No 6 slot vacant, it will be a tussle between Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit to grab that spot vacated by Yuvraj. Squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Captain), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Rohit Sharma, Ishant Sharma, R Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha, Umesh Yadav, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Rahul Sharma, Varun Aaron. — PTI |
Great to see bowlers hunting in packs, says Dhoni
Kolkata, November 17 India crushed the West Indies by an innings and 15 runs at Eden Gardens today to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match Test series. "These bowlers can bowl quick. But the good thing is that all the bowlers took up the responsibility well. It doesn't matter who is taking wickets. They are hunting in packs which is important," Dhoni said after his side wrapped up the match in the post-lunch session of the fourth day. "Overall, I am happy with the performance. We got off to a good start and then the middle order capitalised. The fast bowlers gave us breakthroughs and then the spinners capitalised," he said. Opting to bat, India piled up a mammoth 631 for seven declared in their first innings and then shot out the tourists for 153 to take a huge 478-run first innings lead, which according to Dhoni set the stage for the comprehensive win. "We batted well. The 400-plus lead really helped us. This was the reason why we won the game comfortably," he said. However, the Indian bowlers had to toil in West Indies' second essay as after following on, they scored 463 before being bowled out. And, Dhoni said patience was the key to success for his bowlers in the Caribbean side's second innings. "It was a long fielding session (in the second innings). We got them out quite easily in the first innings. But the wicket got flat in the second innings. So, it was very important for us to bowl patiently. "It was a patience game (in the second innings). (Darren) Bravo batted well along with Chanderpaul but we knew a couple of wickets can open the gate," he said. — PTI |
Sagar slams ton, Saurashtra 280/4
Mohali, November 17 Jogiyani struck 14 boundaries in his unbeaten 126 and was associated in a 169-run stand for the second wicket with opener Bhushan Chauhan who scored 68. A lot was expected from the bat of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja as he has been in fine form in the earlier matches including a triple hundred in Saurashtra’s opening match. But Jadeja fell after hitting 24 from 17 balls. At stumps, veteran Sitanshu Kotak (25) was at the crease with Jogiani. Saurashtra did not have the best of starts when they lost Chirag Pathak (22) in the seventh over. But Jogiani and Bhushan made sure their team reach a strong position with a well-compiled partnership. In the field, it was yet another disappointing day for skipper Harbhajan Singh as wickets continued to elude him. This is his third Ranji game this season and so far he has just managed a solitary wicket and this lack of form has not done much to help his cause for a recall to the Indian team. With the Indian team slated to tour Australia next month, time is fast running out for Harbhajan to make an impact and grab the attention of the national selctors. |
Johannesburg, November 17 Three South African batsmen scored half-centuries but none was able to convert it into a big knock. Jaques Kallis, AB de Villiers and Ashwell Prince all showed early form in their knocks but threw it away after doing all the hard work. Peter Siddle was the most successful Aussie bowler claiming three wickets. Earlier, Australia dismissed both South Africa's openers early before the hosts fought back through Jacques Kallis. South Africa were 107 for two at lunch, with Kallis on 43 not out off 33 balls. He and Hashim Amla, who batted watchfully to score 14 runs off 50 deliveries, put on an unbeaten 64 for the third wicket. Australia suffered a blow when all-rounder Shane Watson had to leave the field with an injury and was unable to complete his fourth over. Before the setback, Watson had taken the wicket of Jacques Rudolph, caught behind for 30. The first breakthrough was made by Mitchell Johnson, who had Graeme Smith caught at second slip for 11. Teenage debutant Pat Cummins generated impressive pace but did not take a wicket in conceding 17 runs off eight overs. The selection of Cummins had been widely expected but it was not known whether Johnson would have kept his place if there had not been a fitness doubt about Ryan Harris, who was reported yesterday as having been "stiff and sore" following the first Test. On a hot, sunny day and on a pitch that looked ideal for batting, Cummins induced the first false strokes, with Rudolph getting off the mark in the fourth over with an inside edge for one to fine leg and Smith beaten past the inside edge in the same over. Johnson conceded 11 runs in his third over, which included boundaries by Rudolph and Smith. But in his next over he made a ball climb and move away slightly off a good length to have Smith caught at second slip by Michael Clarke. Amla had scored only one when Australia sought a review of a not out decision by umpire Billy Bowden after Johnson appealed for leg before wicket. Replays showed the ball would have brushed the outside edge of the off stump, within the umpire's discretionary zone, and Amla survived. Kallis joined Brian Lara of the West Indies as the fourth highest run scorer in Tests when he hit the first ball he faced from Watson through the covers for four to take his total of runs to 11,953. He took sole possession of fourth place when he scored a single in Watson's next over. Kallis looked in good form as he hit seven fours and added a six in the last over before lunch when he hit off-spinner Nathan Lyon over mid-wicket. — AFP |
Baljit hits out at Punjab govt
Chandigarh, November 17 Baljit, who lost his right eye to an injury during training with a golf ball, said he had spoken to various people within the State government, including the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, but to no avail. Speaking to the media at a press conference, Baljit said, “I was assured that everything, including a job with the State government, will be looked after. But it has been so long, and all I have got is just hollow promises. I have met the Deputy Chief Minister on various occasions in Delhi and also in Chandigarh, but apart from another promises, I have not received much from him. While other sportspersons, who do not have the same level of performance behind them, have been rewarded with positions in the police department, my case has been consistently ignored.” He also hit out at Hockey India for making a mockery of his playing career. He said that he had been called for trials, and despite putting in an above par performance, he was ruled out for selection. “I was made to undergo a trial, alongside other Indian national players. I put in a really good performance, but was ultimately told that I could not be selected and was told that I was handicapped. If they had already made up their minds, then why make me go through the grill at all? Why couldn’t they just tell me in the first place?” He also said that he was recently awarded for his performance in a tournament in Jharkhand by the Union Sports Minister Ajay Maken. He also requested the Punjab government to understand his plight and support him during his time of need. “I do not see what criteria do I not fulfill. They can place so many other players as DSPs, but not me. My question is why? Why can’t the government realize that I sacrificed my eye, my career, playing for the nation. This is, maybe, the least I can expect from them!” |
Now England team face World Cup exit?
Patiala, November 17 Giving information in this regard, Director General of NADA Rahul Bhatnagar said till date NADA had disclosed the report of 120 players out of which 34 had been found positive. This includes 6 players from Australia, 6 from England, 5 from Canada, 5 from Spain, 4 from America, 3 from Italy, 2 from Norway and one each from India, Argentina and Germany. He further informed that Australia had to quit as it did not have sufficient players to continue in the tournament. While 6 Australian players were provisionally suspended for doping, two of its players were injured and therefore could not play. “Similarly, England is a 14-member contingent and six of its players have been suspended for doping. Now that it is left with only 8 players, which is the minimum number of players required to play any match, any more player flunking the dope test would lead to their exit from the tournament,” he added. Notably, as 5 players from Canada have also failed the dope test, they are now left with only one extra player. Meanwhile, Talking to The Tribune about the doping menace that has hit the World Kabaddi Cup, Bhatnagar said most of these players were not educated and therefore seemed unaware about this evil. “Lack of proper coaching is another big flaw. As this game is popular mainly amongst the Punjabi community, not many coaches are involved in professionally training new players. Even if there are coaches, they lay stress on teaching necessary techniques rather than apprising them about banned substances. Therefore, the players continue to consume power enhancing drugs on their own without knowing whether they are free of drugs or not. If these countries are actually serious about promoting this game, they will have to pay equal stress on educating the players about various banned substances” he added. |
