Travel and unravel
He is a man of many facets. From working in a call centre to assisting an architect, making his mark in films by working alongside the likes of Farhan Akthar, Nandita Das and Arjun Rampal; playing a critically acclaimed role in My Brother Nikhil, and now, all set to venture into film production, Purab Kohli has literally tested all waters. In Chandigarh to talk about his upcoming show Life Main Ek Baar on Fox Traveller, the dimpled lad speaks about life, work and much more. Dressed in a check shirt, beige six-pocketers and his hair tied up in a pony, one could really mistake him for being the boy next door. “Acting will always remain close to my heart,” he says. For Purab, it never really started off as a dream of making a mark in films. “If you really want your dreams to come true, you need to dream first,” he says and transports us into his world of Hip Hip Hurry, his production company and his short film. “It was not until My Brother Nikhil, that I realised I really wanted to take up acting,” he says. Fitting the bill of being a chilled out guy, he will never plan much before actually executing it. While struggling as an actor, Purab got a few anchoring jobs and took them on convincingly. “I was never into production, but just as a fluke ended up assisting a friend and totally enjoyed it. It was then that I got into full-time production. I like watching things in order,” he smiles. Films will never take a backseat for him. If the certification is in order, his next film will be out soon. “The promo of Jal should be out with Rockstar,” he informs us. Based in Kutch, the movie deals with the subject of water harvesting, “Yes, but still it will have the love, romance and all the jazz attached with movies,” he says. Rock On also changed a lot for Purab. Offers kept pouring for this actor but his commitments involved sticking to good films. “It not always easy being perfect in taking decisions,” he says. If the acting bug ever leaves this 32-year-old, the next best thing will be, “Producing good films,” he says. Talking about his production house 1PHK, he says, “The name is in my initials and a dig at 1BHK houses,” he laughs. Taking about the show that has recently been aired, he says, “When I was approached, the main concept was to do a travel show with my friends,” he says. Everything good that gathers attentions has something different about it. “It was with this thought that we decided that instead of doing the show with my friends, we’ll add a twist,” he quips. Then what followed was an extensive hunt to pick out a travel enthusiast, with whom he could share his common travel list. Picking out a mix of personalities, he zeroed in on Arun, an atypical software engineer, who quit his job and now teaches Capoeria; Bhaskar— a chilled-out film student and Jupiter, a highly opinionated marketing professional. The script of this show involves the four doing outrageous stunts and unthinkable activities while on their trips. “All four of us took turns shooting as well and the others did most of the talking,” he says. “Initially, we wanted to have a girl and eventually decided to strike a balance, but there is no way you can have pure unadulterated fun with women around,” he laughs. So, are you ready to swim with the sharks and this dreamy dusky guy? vasudha@tribunemail.com |

Picture imperfect
Your semi-clad photos on social networking sites like Facebook could be one of the things which might be preventing many individuals from becoming your online friends.
According to new research, online profiles featuring over the top poses, bikini shots or pictures of cars immediately spark a negative opinion on strangers. Online reputation management firm Reputation 24/7, which carried out the study, said: “Managing your online reputation is just as vital for people as it is for brands.” “It’s difficult not to judge someone whether you meet them face-to-face or see their online presence. Seeing a profile on a site will only tell you so much about a person. It’s easy to jump to conclusions, especially if an individual has outlandish pictures.” Images which may have negative connotations included the pictures where the subject is seen holding an alcoholic drink or if they are drunk, photos of them in passionate clinches with their other half, the report found. The study found a shot taken of oneself is seen as positive just as a wedding picture. Pictures of children or shots taken on a beach are also good for one’s image. Even a smile was hailed as being important. As per the firm, as information about oneself can be accessed by thousands if not millions of people so it’s important that one’s online image is enhancing his or her personality and presence and not hindering it.

Go into the history of fashion weeks in India - only one used to take place annually till the year 2006. Hindustan Lever, the official sponsor of Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI)’s Lakme Fashion Week (LFW), split from the parent organisation (FDCI) then. It led to the coming up of second major fashion event in India, a biannual feature in Mumbai. After this, the count didn’t stop at two. One thing led to another! Fashion got segmented. There came a trend of regional fashion weeks; then weeks were dedicated to accessories, to sexes and even occasions.
Fashion designer Nida Mahmood, who showcased her creations at the Chandigarh Fashion Week last year, says every such event helps in the growth of the industry. “When everything was under one roof, there was always a risk of certain segments getting ignored. The market is far more organised now with prêt, couture and men’s fashion industry growing simultaneously.” Regional fashion weeks in Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ludhiana and Chandigarh; though didn’t enjoy a lot of buyers, helped create a lot of fashion awareness in tier-two cities. The dynamics of the industry also changed post Van Huesen’s Men Fashion Week. While earlier the seasons of Wills India Lifestyle Fashion Week showcased menswear as fillers for prêt line, for women the men’s week concentrated only on menswear and accessories. Says Raakesh Agarwal, designer, “The fashion week helped explore the untapped market.” Likewise, the India International Jewellery Week (IIJW), into its second edition, makes a lot of sense. Jewellery designers get a chance to show their creativity and buyers get many options. The spiraling cost of gold doesn’t affect sales either. “There is an unparalleled demand for gold in India. The custom of gifting gold on wedding will never change, so why not have a podium where the best can be put on display. IIJFW is the perfect event for the same,” says Queeny Singh, a renowned jewellery designer. It’s too early to count the benefits of fashion weeks. Only if these are able to sustain, will the purpose of concept-based fashion weeks be served!

Vidya: I don't connect with Silk
Everybody is talking about Vidya Balan's outrageous and bold costumes as she plays Silk Smitha in The Dirty Picture. The acclaimed actress says there is a lot more to the film than the skin show. On getting down and Dirty
Don't judge this film only by looking at the sex appeal as it has an emotional touch too, which you will realise once you watch the film. The film shows the journey of a woman: how she deals with fame and everyone around. It's a lovely film. Lyrically speaking
The music of the film is already doing well. My favorite is Ooh La La which is sung by Bappi Lahiri and Shreya Ghoshal; she's lent a classic voice which everyone is appreciating. The songs are picturised in a different way. The chemistry between me and Naseer Ji in this song is what people are talking about. Memorable moments
Shooting the entire film was a totally memorable experience. Initially, wearing such costumes and shooting the film was not easy but then everyone stood by me and I realised I am there to work. I enjoyed each and every day of shooting so much that I miss it all today. Working with Milan was a new experience and I love his
sense of cinema and aesthetics. We were shooting in Bidar Fort near Hyderabad and I loved the response from the locals. They offered to bring home-made food for us, would also lovingly talk
to Emraan and myself and they made the shooting so easy. Getting local
Yes, we wanted the simple but hot look so I got one of my blouses (Red saree) stitched from a local tailor and I even bought some sarees from local shops. And believe me, they are too good. Connecting with Silk?
I didn't connect with Silk because she lived a different life and I have lived a different life. But when I was asked to play this character I had to do a lot of research and after that, I somehow, managed to play the character. Though it's hard to know what was going on in her mind, I can bet she, being a woman, must have been very emotional, which every woman is. She must have seen ups and down and this film will also show you the emotional journey of Silk Smitha. So do watch it.

Language no bar
Actor Akshay Kumar takes pride in being a desi and feels his fans love him because he reminds them of their roots. "I'm proud to be desi. I'm a desi boy from Delhi and I'm very proud of who I am and I am proud of my roots. My fans love me for speaking to them in their language; they connect with me because I remind them of their roots. So as a rule, I've decided to be myself," he said.
The actor also has no qualms in admitting that Hindi as a language is something he is more comfortable conversing in. "After all, we're Hindi film stars. We earn our bread and butter from Bollywood. I'm uncomfortable talking in English. I've always been ...I've realised my fans love the dialogues I say on screen. And those are in Hindi. Why speak in a language you are not comfortable in? After all success is about being comfortable in your own skin and I'm finally doing that," said Akshay, who will be seen next in Desi Boyz alongside John Abraham. It also stars Chitrangda Singh and Deepika Padukone. — PTI

Ghost from the past
Actor Shiney Ahuja, who was convicted in a rape case, is making his comeback to Bollywood after almost three years with a new film Ghost. The horror film produced by Bharat Shah and Puja Jatinder Bedi, hits cinema houses on December 16.
Ghost, written, edited and directed by Puja, who had earlier co-produced films like Mangal Pandey and Guru, stars, Shiney and Sayali Bhagat in lead roles. "The film revolves around a city hospital as it witnesses a chain of blood curdling chilling murders... uncanny happenings at the hospital. Today, audiences are intelligent and mature and they need to see some real horror. I aim to scare them," Puja said. Sayali essays the role of Dr Suhani, while Shiney plays an officer Vijay Singh from the investigating agency. "I am surprised with the increased and growing appetite for horror films. I am looking forward to a great response. I hope the audience love this film," veteran producer Bharat Shah, said. All roads lead to Rockstar
Everybody, without exception, is looking forward to Rockstar or so it seems. The film has so much going for it: the music, the locales, the undisclosed (mostly) story, and so much more. Most importantly, it combines really powerful talent: Shammi Kapoor, Imtiaz Ali, Ranbir Kapoor, AR Rahman, and Irshad Kamil, among others. The movie has been talked about for many months now and gorgeous Nargis (who plays the female lead) has aroused people's interest. Here is what Bollywood is saying about
Rockstar. Perfect weekender
Sanjay Dutt: Ranbir is like a younger brother to me. I have seen him growing up. Rockstar promos look really interesting. I am looking forward to the film because for the first time Ranbir is doing something different and a serious role too. He is a born star, no doubt, but watching him in Rockstar will be really interesting. All in one
SRK: I am also looking forward to Rockstar. I think Imtiaz Ali has made some beautiful films and Rockstar too seems different and heart-touching. I have just seen one promo as I was busy with promotions but I wish all the best to Ranbir Kapoor and team. I will surely watch Rockstar this weekend. Complete package
Vidya Balan: I love all the songs of Rockstar and my favourite is Kun Faaya. I am a Rahman fan, so I would definitely watch Rockstar as it's a musical film. Apart from that, it's been directed by Imtiaz Ali who is brilliant without any doubt. I am sure there is a great love story in the film. And Ranbir is once again here with a challenging role. So I am looking forward to Rockstar. Stars to rock for
Madhuri Dixit: I have worked with Rishi Kapoor and have seen Ranbir growing up. He is such an adorable kid. And Rockstar seems really promising. I love the songs too. All the best
Kareena Kapoor: I wish Imtiaz Ali all the best! After all, Jab We Met is one of my best films and I love Imtiaz Ali, he is such a brilliant director who makes sure he takes out the best from his actors in a different way. And Ranbir Kapoor is in it! I am sure Rockstar will be a great film. Connecting score
Dia Mirza: I think no one can beat Rahman when it comes to music and I just can't stop myself from listening to Rockstar songs especially Saadda Haq. It gives me amazing energy and a positive feeling; every song is beautiful! And not to forget Ranbir Kapoor looks very promising with his different look. Nargis too looks very cute in the film. Scripting success
Kangana Ranaut: I think Rockstar is one of the most promising films of the year. After all, it has been directed by my favourite director Imtiaz Ali, who has given romance a different name. I have watched his films like Socha Na Tha, Jab We Met and loved them as they are fresh and have great music. And Rockstar too looks romantic but in a different way.

Preity insults Anil Kapoor on her chat show!
The mere difference in the years of experience in the industry between these two actors calls for respect from Preity Zinta for Anil Kapoor. The latter was in his talkative best on this week’s episode of Up, Close and Personal with PZ as he was on a spree of revealing one secret after the other. But what he wasn’t prepared for was the strange remarks of Preity on Anil’s career. Preity went on to tell Anil that he works in such big banner movies but what is sad to see is that he is barely seen in those movies. The gentleman that he is he took the remark in his stride and moved on to talk about other things.
On the lighter side, Preity quizzed Anil on his immense popularity and his Jhakaas style of acting that he is most known for. A father of three, Anil confessed that he doesn’t give advice to his kids especially Sonam as he likes them to learn things with their own experience.Catch the grand finale of Up, Close and Personal with PZ this Saturday, 12th November, 7pm only on UTV Stars!

Pour your heart out
Parvesh Rana I am 25 years of age and I want to move out to a different place for professional reasons. My parents, however, are not happy with the idea. They want me to marry instead, which I am dead against. At one point, I was thinking of running away. What should I do? Running away is not a good idea. Why don’t you talk to your parents, they will surely understand. You should understand that they have their fears. You should confide in them and tell them you will be safe, and you will do good for yourself. — Nisha Sharma, Chandigarh I am a single woman, and I share my apartment with my colleague. She brings her friends home, and I don’t like it much. Should I walk out or talk to her. Why should you walk out? Speak to your friend and tell her your problem. You don’t have to put up with things that you are not comfortable with. Speak to her and sort it out. (Rana is a TV anchor and Bollywood actor) |

Cooked, not raw food provides more energy
Contrary to popular belief, cooked food provides more energy than its raw version, which is particularly true of meat. The finding suggests humans are biologically adapted to benefit from cooking, which played a key role in driving our evolution from an ape-like being into one that resembles humans today.
“It is astonishing that we don’t understand the fundamental properties of the food we eat,” said Rachel Carmody, evolutionary biologist at Harvard’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. “All the effort we put into cooking food and presenting it—mashing it up, or cutting it, or slicing or pounding it—we don’t understand what effect that has on the energy we extract from food, and energy is the primary reason we eat in the first place,” added Carmody, according to a Harvard statement. To examine those effects, Carmody designed a unique experimental model. Over 40 days, she fed two groups of mice a series of diets that consisted of either meat or sweet potatoes prepared in four ways - raw and whole, raw and pounded, cooked and whole, and cooked and pounded. Over the course of each diet, researchers tracked changes in each mouse’s body mass, as well as how much they used in an exercise wheel. The results, Carmody said, clearly showed that cooked meat delivered more energy.

The year ahead
If your birthday is November 10...
This date under Scorpio sign indicates that you are on an eternal quest to get to the very heart of any matter. This appears in anything that requires thought and in almost every conversation. You are totally fearless when it comes to delving into depths that nobody can even think of. Mercury in Scorpio is adept at learning the source and the core of any problem or issue. They are blessed (or cursed, depending on how you want to look at it) with the observation skills of a surveillance camera, seeming to just see all and know all! Sometimes they can be quite ‘dark’ because of their tendency to focus on the false in order to get to the truth. These people detest superficiality. They come across as suspicious and can annoy other, more optimistic people with their negative take on things. It’s when your ambitions dovetail with the goals of others and the mission as a whole that it all comes together – and the stars are promoting this synergy. Work hard and use your vision. A positive phase means that nothing can harm you; you’ll manage matters well and will find the right solution to all problems. Employees will be particularly favoured and be able to display their capacity, thus getting recognition. Education wise you will definitely get success. Make financial decisions when you have more insight and information. A winter trip or gathering may be ‘more work’ than expected. You also fatigue more easily than expected. With work under control and your financial position stable, you may afford to relax for a while. Money matters will improve. Those of you, who have been suffering from general weakness and headaches, will find marked relief. Aspirants to the administrative services will be successful. Routine jobs may bore you right now. If you’re struck by a creative idea, by all means follow through with it. You could even develop this concept into a profitable business if you want. Have some fun. Rely on your sense of propriety when investigating speculative moves. A nice picnic near the ocean or lakeside would delight
children.
