Religious institutions told to shift from
public places
Jammu, November 1 Over 100 such religious places or structures exist in the district whose managements, despite given several opportunities, have not applied for regularisation within a stipulated time. They have not also, as mandated, shifted to other places, as their existence was causing public hindrance and obstruction. The list of such institutions and places has been made available in the office of the Deputy Commissioner here, besides at sub-divisional magistrate, RS Pura, and with the tehsildars of Bishnah and RS Pura. Sources said notices in some cases had been served on the managements of a few religious places following the reports by the Home Department that structures were raised on public places and land owned by the government. This illegal practice had been continuing for the past over two decades, the sources said. However, keeping in view the religious sentiments attached to such structures, the administration had decided that encroachments, which were 20 years old and did not cause obstruction to the public nor prevent access to public services or utilities, be regularised. Under the policy, graveyards and cemeteries on public land were allowed to be permitted to exist subject to the condition that the regularisation be obtained within six months. However, any religious structure raised on the government land and causing hindrance in the public movement would not be permitted to continue and managements of such institutions had been asked to shift to other place within a period of three months or face action. The sources added that religious structures, which were less that 20 years old and raised on the government land, would not be permitted to continue in any case. However, any such structure, which was not causing any obstruction to any public service, could be regularised only on payment of such amount for the land, as might be fixed by a divisional-level committee, the sources added.

Jammu DIARY The ISO-certified University of Jammu has become an example of vandalism and defacement by none other than various student bodies. Just visit the varsity campus and one may come across walls of various departments painted with slogans of various student outfits giving a shabby look to the "prestigious" university.
While getting relevant information from the university on academic affairs and various researches may become a Herculean task at times for the information seekers, but it seems there is no dearth of students who waste time in painting the walls with the slogans (see photo). To add to its shabbiness, university has certain "corners" which have been turned into open air public conveniences. Time for the authorities at the helm of affairs to bring their act together.
