Lift yourself
It's so easy to get that perfect nose, lips or face cut. A cosmetic surgeon can fix anything
Manpriya Khurana

Kangna Ranaut Get a brand new jaw line, fiddle with the nose, correct the lips, or set your assets right. A tuck here and a nip there! There's no bar as to how much you can photoshop yourself. Scarlett Johansson was bold and blunt when she was quoted as saying, "I definitely believe in plastic surgery. I don't want to be an old hag. There's no fun in that." A couple of conversations with the cosmetic surgeons and women from the city too seem to believe in the philosophy.

So where do we begin from? At thirteen! Shares Dr Malla C. N, former professor and a cosmetic surgeon, "Girls as young as thirteen come asking for botox filler injections. Why just girls, even boys don't shy away from asking about cosmetic and surgical treatments. It's especially true for people trying their luck in television and films." Do we even need an expert advice on how natural it is to resort to artificial means to look picture perfect? "Both surgical and non surgical are counted as popular treatments among the young and not so young. Initially, people only with injuries and burns or other such scars would come, but now this has changed," he draws a comparison after twenty five years in the profession.

Rakhi SawantStatistics are no less than the observations. People from the industry peg the rise at minimum 200 per cent of the number of women going in for such procedures. "There's been at least 200 to 300 per cent rise in the number of patients and needless to mention the awareness levels," shares Dr KD Aneja, cosmetic surgeon, Inscol hospital. Age might just be a number but every age brings along its characteristic problems. He adds, "At the age of sixteen to eighteen, they are generally dealing with body image and childhood scars, so they come for nose correction and the likes of it. Between 20 - 35, it is breast augmentation and then post thirty women come in hordes for botox fillers and liposuctions, which also remain one of the most popular surgical procedures."

Shilpa ShettyThere's an echo. "Cosmetic breast augmentation and liposuction remain the most popular among city women. Sometimes, it's beyond dieting and exercise to look perfect, in that case surgical procedures are the only option," says Dr. K.M.Kapoor, from Anticlock, an age reversal clinic and medispa. Reasons for their popularity, though many, are not hard to see. He adds, "That's also because a lot of women have started wearing western clothes, which not only reveal your body shape but also your body. Since they can't hide their body, there's no option but to have perfect figure through whatever means." Apart from liposuction, cheek lifts and nose jobs remain the most sought after. Opines Dr. Kavita Madan , city based cosmetic surgeon, "Majority of my patients come for liposuction. That's because it's perceived as one of the safe procedures, also which will guarantee an instant makeover." Adds Dr. Kapoor, "Minor nose corrections, or cheek lifts or having fuller pouts is a matter of fifteen minutes or half an hour now. So they are hardly even counted among surgical procedures." As it is there's no dearth of Bollywood sites citing umpteen transformed beauties. Should we spell, who's popular for what? Shilpa Shetty for the chiseled nose, or recently Kangna Ranaut for the trout pout and Rakhi Sawant for… Well we leave it at that! And can anyone even dare keep a count of the actresses with frozen expressions!

Laughs Dr. Kavita, "Retaining your natural facial features and only working to improve them is still acceptable. It should become a cause for concern when girls come asking for their entire facial structure to be changed beyond recognition. And going by my experience, I don't think that scenario is far off." As of now, we are happy to make do with liposuction.

Poster Girl
Chandigarh girl Akshitaa Agnihotri, who made it to the top ten of Kingfisher Calendar contest, wants to follow Deepika Padukone and Nargis Fakhri
Ashima Sehajpal

It's a different scene at the entry level, where you have fashion idealists offering free advice all the time - you should know how to carry yourself well, wear your confidence on your sleeve, have the right attitude et al. Once in the industry, it doesn't take much to realise that the "real world is harsher than the ideal. More than confidence and attitude, a model requires a great body to be on the ramp," says Akshitaa Agnihotri, a Chandigarh girl who made it to the top ten finalists of the Kingfisher Calendar this year.

To achieve that great body, Akshitaa changed her daily routine. "All I did in the last six months was work-out, eat and sleep. There were no parties, socialising or get-togethers for me. I used to get up early in the morning to work-out, then eat for energy and go off to sleep; wake-up again, work-out and sleep."

Akshitaa began her journey in the modeling world with auditions of Miss India Universe contest. She says that the contest gave her the right kind of exposure and helped make her way into the modeling world. "I then walked the ramp for major designers like Swapnil Shende and Archna Kochar."

When it comes to the Kingfisher Calendar Contest, she is probably the first girl from Chandigarh to participate in it although many have auditioned for other beauty pageants. "With this particular contest, you have to be very sure because all you have to sport throughout is a bikini. You can't afford half-an-inch of flab anywhere on the body." Even for tasks like performing kathak or camel-riding in Udaipur, the contestants were only clad in a bikini.

To ensure the aesthetics remain intact, all of them wore a lot of traditional jewellery. What comes as a surprise is that there were no cat-fights or back-biting. "It's a bit difficult to believe when it's about an all-girls contest. But everyone was so focused that there was no time to waste. We had to look fresh and fit, which is only possible when there is no stress, no catfights or gossip."

Over 10,000 girls auditioned for the contest from all over the country. She says that her parents supported her throughout, which gave her a lot of confidence. "When my mother saw the first episode of the contest on a national TV channel she said that she hoped to see me in proper clothes in the next episode. Only later she realised that the calendar is a different ball game and not a regular beauty pageant."

As for what's next on her career plans, she says, "I hope to repeat the success of Deepika Padukone and Nargis Fakhri, who made their debut in the glamour industry with the calendar." Bollywood doesn't fail to beckon ever!

A still from an advertisement featuring Gurpreet Saini ( center)

Gurpreet Saini, the fresh talent from Chandigarh whom we have been lately seeing model for a lot many recent television advertisements, like

KFC, Lays, Tata Nano in 2010 and Uninor, Mc Donald's, Pepsi (7 Up), Nokia, Olix.in and Symphony Air in 2011.

Having done his schooling from St. Stephens, BA geography Hons from DAV College, Sector-10 and Masters in Mass Communication from PU, he is busy back in Mumbai grabbing on more and more advertisements. We catch with the Chandigarh da munda about what he has been up to.

Not the right time

The beginner in the fame field says it is not the right time for interviewing him as he wants to be talked of after three years when he has achieved something. Those are the hopes he has from Mumbai nagari!

Lining on advertisements

"Advertisements give me good money and a good recognition to my face and I'm enjoying working in them till now." So, advertisements are all about selling your face.

Why not reality shows and TV soaps?

Gurpreet Saini
Short Take: Gurpreet Saini

He is too busy with the auditioning processes for the TV advertisements and does not find a connect with reality shows and run-of-the-mill acting for the serials. "There is not much of real acting in serials and the reality shows are just a waste of time."

First ever advertisement

Gurpreet has already appeared in eleven to twelve advertisements till now. His first ad was KFC veg. zinger burger in July 2010 and since then he has not stopped.

Memory lane

The 7 UP ad gave him a chance to work with Raj Kumar Hirani and Sharman Joshi. And, the Lays ad with Saif Ali Khan he felt so lucky. "My favourite one is Tata Nano tickle."

Brand choice

As a beginner you don't have a choice with the brands you go and give auditions for any and every brand. Still it is Gurpreet's own personal choice to go in for good brands which add to his kitty.

Back up of theatre

With an experience of six years in theatre Gurpreet thanks his stars to be a theatre person. "The directors find to be impressive if one has a theatre experience. It is easy for me to act, memorise a script and experiment only because of theatre."

Ad mad world

While shooting for advertisements one gets a chance to spend more time with the whole creative team. "I observe everything while shooting. The advertisements are more interesting as you have to tell a whole story in just thirty seconds and give an expression that explains everything."

Future plans

Right now I'm happy doing advertisements, but I'm struggling hard to catch hold of some movies where I can prove my acting talent.

Gyan Zone
On a classical note
Mona

If you thought classical music is for the old and classy, Farid Hasan and Bhaskar Nath present a striking picture. In Chandigarh on Sunday for Triveni Sangeet Sabha's recital, Farid and Bhaskar are high on life as well as music!

Wah Ustad

Farid HasanFarid Hasan has been learning vocals from his uncle and presently Delhi gharana guru, Ustad Iqbal Ahmad Khan since childhood. "If one is singing, it's only by the grace of God. But, yes, talim (instruction), ilm (knowledge), amal (practice) are equally significant for an artiste," says Farid. This 27-year-old is very positive about the classical music scene presently. "Even today people complement me on a few classical songs that I sung on Zee TV Sa Re Ga Ma Pa (he was a 2010 finalist)," says Farid.

Youngsters are increasingly turning towards classical, Farid's fan base is mostly young. But then the only hiccup is probably the patronage. "Earning a living is as important as pursuing an art. I strongly feel that government should come to assistance of artistes so that they can follow the discipline strongly required for the artistes without the care of earning a livelihood," says Farid." Amen!

On a different note

"Learning an instrument is half as tough as learning to sing," says shahnai vadak Bhaskar Nath. Bhaskar belongs to the Meerut shehnai gharana and is proudly taking forward the family tradition. His uncle Pt Jagannath has been internationally renowned shehnai vadak and so was his grandfather. Being trained under Pt Jasraj presently, Bhaskar has his aim right clear in front of him. "I want to be in civil services when it comes to career," pat comes a reply and also, "I want to create that craze that classical stalwarts like Ustad Bismillah Khan have made for the classical music."

This 17-year-old has recently traded commerce for science (he studies in class eleventh) so that he can pursue his riyaaz properly. Not only shahnai, Bhaskar also plays flute for his school band. "My classmates are not able to relate to classical music much, but, we gel well in school band," says this 'most famous' kid from the school.

Bhaskar NathBhaskar considers himself to be fortunate to be born in musically rich family. His brother Manu is a vocalist. "When my father does riyaaz, it benefits us all," says Bhaskar. "One more thing," he says, "My unconventional choice of playing shahnai gets me lots of attention from girls as well," says the child in Bhaskar but when it comes to playing shahnai, he is a true master!

Stress Buster
Say NO
renee singh

''Why can't I say no," This has been one of the major stresses in my life, over the years I have realised that saying no to anyone for anything has been the most difficult task for me. I would say 'Yes' to anyone asking me for almost anything and later on keep fretting over it and telling myself within 'Now why could I not say no' and 'How do I get out of this situation now!'

I even went and bought a book by an American psychologist with a title that said 'Why Can't I say No' but to no avail. My pattern of fretting continued for years, until I made a conscious effort of breaking the pattern and changing the zone.

As humans have a habit of just settling ourselves into patterned behaviour and until we can consciously decide to change the way, we just continue.

Why we are creating this kind of stress is because we just haven't learnt how to cope with life in the correct fashion.

First and foremost we must:

n Learn how to prioritise

n Use time wisely

n Anticipate what your need is.

n Look at problems as challenges.

n Strive for excellence.

n Do things in moderation.

n Put safety first.

Remember life is an attitude and even stress is an attitude. If we have prioritised our wants and desires we definitely would make it easier for ourselves to take the correct decisions. So, please give adequate time to yourselves, know your limitations and let others know them too.

You are only caught in the 'yes' trap of stress when you consider it an inconceivable task for you. Why must you constantly play the good Samaritan?

Remember you always have options:

n Have a support network of people, places and things

n Quit trying to fix people constantly

n Talk less and listen more. Sometimes you fall into the 'yes' category because of excess questioning and a 'let me fix It' syndrome.

We must realise that there is only so much that we can handle and learn to live accordingly. We create stress when we are constantly trying to do things our inner system is not geared for.

Stress is the response of the nervous system to stressors that are too large to handle. It is the internalised result of external overloads. It consists of stored abnormalities that serve to protect us from limited exposure to the same overloads by limiting our functioning. Do not allow this to happen.

Improve your life by removing your stressors and transcending the negative feelings generated within you.

Take control of your mind and do not allow it to get into the 'yes' pattern moments of 'no' requirement.

Please learn how to say 'no' when required and keep yourself away from the stress zone.

When curiosity helped the cat…

Curiosity may have killed the cat, but for students, it seems to be as important
as intelligence in determining how well they perform at school.

So psychological scientists have started looking at factors other than intelligence that make some students outshine others.

Researchers performed a meta-analysis, gathering the data from about 200 studies involving 50,000 students. They found that curiosity did, indeed, influence academic performance, the journal Perspectives in Psychological Science reports.

In fact, it had quite a large effect, about the same as conscientiousness. When put together, conscientiousness and curiosity had as big an effect on performance as intelligence, according to a University of Edinburgh statement.

"If you're intellectually curious, you'll go home, you'll read the books. If you're perceptually curious, you might go travelling to foreign countries and try different foods," says Sophie von Stumm of the University of Edinburgh, who led the study.

Both of these, von Stumm thought, could help you do better in school. She conducted the study with Benedikt Hell, University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland and Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, Goldsmiths University
of London.

Conscientiousness is the inclination to go to class and do your homework. People who score high on this personality trait also tend to do well in school. —IANS

Drink to health

Cranberry juice is far better than its extract in fighting a bio-film, formed by a resistant layer of bugs that spur infection, new research says.

The study explored mechanisms that the virulent form of E. coli bug, the primary cause of most urinary tract infections in people, uses to form bio-films.

"What we have shown is that cranberry juice's ability to prevent bio-films is more complex than we may have originally thought," said study co-author Terri Camesano, professor of chemical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). — IANS

Switching times

Mobile phones are no more just a communicationdevice as an increasing number of people are switching to newer handsets
within two years for new applications, according to industry body Assocham.

In a survey conducted across six major cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad, nearly 39 per cent respondents said they switch to a new phone in less than two years for new applications.

The survey covered 1,370 responses from people in the age group of 20 to
30 years.

Also, with prices of mobile handsets coming down and disposable incomes going up, people are changing handsets too often.

The survey found that for first time buyers, the brand of phone influences the purchasing decision with 39 per cent respondents agreeing.

India is the second fastest growing telecom market in the world after China, with 59.1 crore users in urban areas and 30.1 crore users in rural areas.

About 17 per cent respondents said price was a factor, while 10 per cent said availability of the latest model influenced the purchasing decision.

For the second purchase, quality ranked on top with 15 per cent respondents agreeing. — PTI

It’s Rocking
Pure & simple

Jugni is not the only folk song that has been picked by Bollywood music directors, rendered a new treatment and then introduced in films. The latest addition in the list is Katiya Karoon from the film, Rockstar. Sung beautifully by Harshdeep Kaur and composed by AR Rahman, the new version of the song just can't get any better. Music lovers have given thumbs up to the track and they tell us why.

Well composed

The chorus Tinga-ling-tinga-ling sets the pace of the song. It's a fantastic romantic number that once again speaks volumes of brilliance of AR Rahman. The lyrics complement the composition of the song well and so does the way it has been shot. There is innocence in the song, which is well enacted by Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri. The song will for sure do a lot of good to the film, Rockstar.
— Rohit Narang, a PU student.

Rahman again!

The song, Katiya Karoon once again proves the versatility of AR Rahman as a music composer. Singer Harshdeep Kaur has done justice to the composition of the Rahman and lyrics by Irshad Kamil. The Punjabi flavour in the song makes it very catchy. Even the picturisation of the song is wonderfully done. The song makes the
Rockstar's album complete adding a romantic track to it.
— Sneha Sharma, a GCG11 student

Young at heart

The song offers a complete package. Harshdeep Kaur's vocals, AR Rahman's music, Irshad Kamil's lyrics and Imtiaz Ali's direction makes this song a clear winner in the album of Rockstar. The contemporary treatment given to the folk song makes it apt for young music lovers as well. The sing will rule the charts for time to come for sure.

Pursuit of happiness

Finding a ten pound note in an old pair of jeans and being told you've lost weight are the things that make us happiest, according to a new study. The poll of 3,000 adults, which set out to find the top 50 things that make people happy, also found that getting into a bed with freshly washed sheets or seeing an elderly couple holds hands also triggers our good mood.

It revealed that happiness is accessible to us all - through the simplest day-to-day occurrences, a publication reported. And 38 per cent of us feel happier on a Saturday than any other day of the week, particularly when we wake up and realise the weekend starts here. Sunshine was found to be largely responsible for us feeling jolly, featuring in the top 10, while having a quiet moment to yourself, hearing a baby laugh or the smell of freshly cut grass also change our mood for the better.

Most of those polled said they appreciate generosity from others - warming to those who offer an elderly person a seat on the bus or train, or who pass on their parking ticket in the car park.

But the average person is only happy for half the week due to the hustle and bustle of everyday life. "Despite not feeling entirely happy for three out of seven days of the week, it doesn't take much to lift our spirits," said a spokesman for Three Barrels Brandy. — ANI

B-town makes its presence felt at F1 after-party

Unlike day one, the second day of F1 after-party hosted by actor Arjun Rampal saw a number of Bollywood celebrities making their presence felt.

Preity Zinta, Fardeen Khan, Sudhir Mishra and Nikhil Advani were among the guests, who flew down to the capital to add zeal to the party. Southern superstar Venkatesh was also present.

While Preity, Fardeen and Nikhil chose to go for all-black look, Sudhir stuck to his signature style with jeans and a jacket.

Suzanne Roshan was spotted on the second day as well, however, after going green on the previous day, she chose for an all-black outfit this time. Nikhil, completely soaked in the F1 spirit, said he is eagerly looking forward for the performance of international pop icon Lady Gaga. "I am really looking forward to the performance of Lady Gaga. I am sure it will be a rocking show," said Nikhil, who has made films like Kal Ho Naa Ho and Patiala House.

While filmmaker Sudhir was all excited about F1, he seemed disinterested when asked about Gaga's performance. "I like the rush of the game, I like the sport a lot. Although I didn't see the qualifiers today but before coming here I visited the track, it is amazing and I have heard that it's the fastest track ever made," said Sudhir, who calls himself a fan of F1 champ Sebastian Vettel. "I am not a big fan of Gaga, so I can't really say much what the performance would be like," he added. — IANS

And the actress said the stunt worked like a charm - the venue staff escorted her to the VIP section, which was far less crowded, reported a publication. "I was into boy bands in general. I was really shy but I did actually fake an asthma attack to get to the front of the concert. Which is really not common for me. "I got really claustrophobic and I was like packed in with all these girls, and there was a VIP area just few feet away from me. So I screamed to my friends that were three people back, 'Do you guys have my inhaler? I don't know where my inhaler is!' And then some security guard heard me, picked me up and put me in the VIP section of a Jordan Knight concert, thank you very much! I felt guilty but whatever," Seyfried said. — PTI

As good as married

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson Twilight star Robert Pattinson says he is technically married to girlfriend Kristen Stewart, because producers hired a real priest to preside over their on-screen wedding in the latest installment of the film franchise. The couple tie the knot as young lovers Bella Swan and Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part I, and Pattinson says the scenes of the nuptials were more official than he expected, reported a magazine.

"The wedding scene's funny because we used a real priest. So technically we are already married because he did all the things you would do in a normal ceremony. So we don't have a civil union in law, but I guess in the church we are actually married," he said.

Stewart confirmed long running rumours of a romance between her and British hunk Pattinson, conceding it's hard to keep her personal life private when both actors are in the public eye. "So much of my life is so easily Googled. I mean, it's like, 'Come on guys, it (their relationship) is so obvious," she had said. — PTI
