Online lotteries, netbanking frauds find men in khaki wanting
Chandigarh, October 30
There has been no headway in cases of online lottery fraud and netbanking fraud registered by the UT police in the past four years. The cyber crime cell of the police has filed untraced reports in seven such cases of fraud in the recent past and failed to crack the cases in which complainants have been duped of lakhs as they fell prey to e-mails, assuring them that they had won huge sums in lotteries.

Brace for power bill shock twice

It is official now. About 2.5 lakh domestic and commercial electricity consumers in Chandigarh will have to shell out more, ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand, to the UT electricity department in the coming days.

Youth bludgeoned to death, 3 of family held
Chandigarh, October 30
A 19-year-old youth was bludgeoned to death in Ram Darbar last night. The police has arrested three members of a family for allegedly killing the youth to avenge a prior attack arising out of old enmity. Two of the accused in the case are absconding. The prime accused, Jaspal, is a class IV employee with a bank.

GMADA set to go vertical

Stepping into the shoes of private realtors, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) is all set to go vertical, with the construction of high-rise residential towers in upcoming sectors of Mohali, especially new projects like Aerocity and IT City.

Sharjah flight awaits go-ahead
Chandigarh, October 30
The flight from the city to Sharjah will be delayed as international airliner Air Arabia is yet to get the green signal from the Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), New Delhi. The flights were scheduled to take off from the local airport in the first week of November.

On paper for a long time, cycle tracks cry for maintenance
Chandigarh, October 30
The bad condition of a cycle track on the road separating Sectors 51 and 61 road in Chandigarh. Launched with much fanfare, the over-hyped project of cycle tracks in the Union Territory are crying for attention like an abandoned child. Chandigarh administration spent crores of rupees for constructing the tracks. It was marked with ostentation when launched more than eight years ago. A casual perusing of the track by a Tribune team fetched poor results.

Fire breaks out at Sector-8 spa
Firefighters douse flames at a beauty and wellness clinic in Sector 8, Chandigarh, on Sunday.Chandigarh, October 30
A major fire broke out at a beauty spa and wellness clinic in Sector 8 here on Sunday. Sources said the fire department received a call at 8.20 am following which two fire engines were pressed into service to control the fire. It took over an hour for the firefighters to douse the flames.

Admn should ensure quality of life to all
A slum area adjoining the dental college, Panjab University, Chandigarh. There is nothing surprising about living conditions in the so-called slum area of the city. They are expected to be the same all over the world. If we conceded a basic fact, there was little or no place for this category of workers in the master plan of the city.

GGDSD told to refund fee

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum-I has slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharam College (GGDSD), Sector 32, for its failure to refund fee.

Discussion on drug addiction among women

The three-day national conference of the Federation of Indian NGOs for Drug Abuse Prevention (FINGODAP) held at Panjab University concluded on Sunday. Issues related to drug addiction among women and children were discussed in detail. Capacity building of NGOs working in the area of drug treatment and rehabilitation was also emphasised in order to ensure the quality of service delivery to the target population.

The crime branch of the city police today arrested the third member of the gang involved in furnishing bail bonds for undertrials on the basis of forged documents. The police has arrested Amit Kumar who used to furnish bail bonds on the basis of fake documents. A fake identity card and salary slip of the Punjab Government was also recovered from his possession. The gang was busted following the arrested of the first accused, Sachin, of Burail here on October 25.

DC claims timely lifting, payment; commission agents disagree

The process of paddy procurement is in full swing at all the 33 procurement centers in the district and till today 3.47 lakh Metric Tonnes (MT) of paddy has been procured by the various government agencies and private traders in the district, said Yashveer Mahajan, Deputy Commissioner, after visiting the various procurement centers along with the officials of the procurement agencies.

One-day remand for accused
Panchkula, October 30
A local court has sent two brothers Rajesh and Ashok, accused of hitting women and other residents of Sector 10, to a one-day remand. The custody of the two was required for inquiring about the other accused in the case, said the police.

Rape victim’s statement not being recorded
Panchkula, October 30
While the statement of a rape victim could not be recorded before the magistrate here today, her husband has alleged that the police was harassing them and using dilatory tactics in investigation. In an application submitted in the court requesting that her statement be recorded under Section 164, CrPC, the victim alleged that the police was not investigating the case properly.

Man held for snatching bag
Mohali, October 30
The police claims to have solved a case of dacoity with the arrest of Avtar Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran. Mohali SSP GPS Bhullar said two employees of Ravinder Gas Agency, Sohana, were on duty when around 8.30 pm, a 30-year-old youth snatched a bag containing cash from the employees, Mahesh Kumar and Naval Kishore. On receiving a tip-off, the police nabbed the accused.
