England in India: 4th odi
Mumbai, October 23 Such a total was never going to test the formidable Indian batting line-up and victory was achieved with 10 overs to spare when Kohli clobbered Samit Patel to the boundary. Kohli remained unbeaten with 86 and Raina had earlier scored a rapidfire 80 from just 62 balls as India won by six wickets. Captain Dhoni remained unbeaten with 15. When India began their chase, pacer Steve Finn bowled with fire and claimed two early wickets. Debutant Stuart Meaker also scalped another Indian batsman but once Kohli and Raina came together, the Indian innings got a steady look and the result was never in doubt from there on. Once again, some heated words were exchanged between players of both teams but it was pretty clear which team was doing it out of sheer frustration. If things were going haywire for the England team they only had themselves to blame once again. Before the start of this series Ian Bell might have had some serious heated debate or discussion with Alastair Cook that might have put off the England ODI skipper. Otherwise there seems no other earthly reason why Bell continued to be in the reserves while little-known players like Stuart Meaker and Scott Borthwick were included in England’s Playing XI today. Another selection bloomer made by the English team management today meant - like in the three earlier matches - they were going to struggle once again. And they sure did struggle. England meandered their way to a less-than-impressive total. The way the match started it appeared that the English batsmen had been told that they were going to play a Test match and not a one-dayer. The first over bowled by Praveen Kumar to Cook was a maiden. The second over bowled by Vinay Kumar to Craig Keiswetter was also a maiden. After three overs the England score was four without loss. Keiswetter hit some big ones soon after but captain Cook’s miserable series continued when he was trapped leg-before by Ashwin. On the very next ball Kieswetter failed to pick a slow ball from Praveen and was caught plumb in front. Jharkhand pace bowler Varun Aaron made his ODI debut today and notched up speeds upwards of 145 kmph. In his first spell of three overs Varun bowled up-and-down stuff and looked unsure. But he returned for a superb second spell to rattle the England lower-order and finish with figures of 6.1-1-24-3. In a way this can be described as a dream debut for this young bowler. Off-spinner R Ashwin also had highly satisfying figures of three for 38 from his 10
overs. All Blacks win 2nd World Cup
Auckland, October 23 This was not the coronation that had been predicted but ultimately a first-half try from prop Tony Woodcock and a penalty from fourth-choice flyhalf Stephen Donald proved enough to end the country's long wait for a second triumph after 1987. "The people have been outstanding ... the people who have supported this team and have supported this World Cup — I am so proud to be a New Zealander standing here," All Blacks coach Graham Henry said just before captain Richie McCaw lifted the Webb Ellis Cup. "As a day this is something we have dreamed of and for a while, we can rest in peace."
