Murder case cracked; two arrested

With the arrest of two accused, the Panchkula police claims to have solved the murder of 22-year-old Pooja, a resident of Bhainsa Tibba village, who worked at a factory in Baddi (HP).

The police claimed that one of the accused, Sunil, was Pooja’s paramour, while the other, Babloo, helped Sunil in murdering Pooja. On October 19, Pooja was found murdered at SCO No. 3 on the IT Park road at Mansa Devi Complex.

A case under Section 302 of the IPC was registered in this regard. The police arrested Sunil and Babloo, both residents of Bihar. While Sunil was a bus driver, Babloo worked as a conductor. Their bus had been hired by Vardhman Mills, Baddi, to pick up and drop mill workers.

Pooja came in contact with Sunil as she used to board the same bus to go to work. Sunil had promised her of marrying her. However, when Pooja started putting pressure on Sunil for marriage, the latter decided to eliminate her.

Sunil along with Babloo strangulated Pooja and dumped her body at Mansa Devi Complex. The police has ruled out rape with the victim. The accused were today produced in a local court, which remanded them in one-day police remand.

Student dies in mishap

Panchkula: A Class XI student of Shri Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa School, Sector 26, Chandigarh, died after a car hit his two-wheeler near Chandimandir on the National Highway 22 this morning. The deceased was identified as Sunny, a resident of Kalka. Passersby rushed him to General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula, where doctors declared him brought dead. An FIR has been lodged in this connection. against the unknown persons.

OPDs shifted

Panchkula: The OPDs of dentistry, dermatology ayurveda, homoeopathy and yoga are being shifted from General Hospital, Sector 6, to the new building of the Sector 16 dispensary.

Senior Medical Officer Sanjiv Trehan said other departments would start functioning from Monday.

SDM directs hotel owners to follow norms

Zirakpur: Dera Bassi SDM Rajesh Tripathi today held a meeting with owners of marriage palaces, hotels and shopping complexes. He instructed them to follow all prescribed norms.

The SDM said in order to avoid any inconvenience to residents during wedding functions, owners of these palaces had been asked to make a provision for parking. “Loud music will not be allowed after 10 pm,” he told them. He also asked the owners to follow the excise policy while serving liquor during functions. There are 25 to 30 marriage palaces in the town.

5 held with country-made pistols

Mohali: With the arrest of five persons, the CIA wing of Mohali Police claims to have recovered stolen and robbed property worth Rs 4 lakh. Mohali SSP GPS Bhullar said the accused were involved in a series of thefts and robberies in the district. On getting a tip-off, the CIA arrested five youths, Ranjit Singh (19), Monu Chaudhary, Maninder Singh, Bhupinder Singh and Harpreet Singh. The robbers were caught in possession of crude weapons. The police has recovered a stolen auto-rickshaw, two country-made pistols and five cartridges from them.

Ban on use of crackers after 10 pm

Chandigarh: The UT administration today banned the use of fire crackers in silence zone comprising area of 100 metres around hospitals, educational institutions, courts and religious places. The District Magistrate put restriction on the use of fire crackers in the Union Territory of Chandigarh between 10 pm to 6 am. This has been done to minimise the ill-effects of noise pollution caused by bursting crackers and injury to the health of public. The order will be effective for a period of 16 days from October 25 to November 10, according to a press note.

2 held with 750-gm opium

Mohali (Kharar): The Mohali police today held two persons with 750-gm opium. The accused have been identified as Des Raj and Rurmal, both residents of Jaipur. The police said on receiving a tip-off, it conducted a raid at New Sunny Enclave and nabbed the accused. It said the accused would be produced in the court tomorrow.

Students thrash cops in police station

A brawl between current and former students of Panjab University took an ugly turn when the students assaulted two policemen, including a munshi on night duty, at the Sector 11 police station last night.

Besides, a policeman at the entrance was also thrashed. The incident occurred when a group of agitated former and present PU students, involved in a brawl, was brought to the police station at 11 pm on Thursday. The accused have been identified as university student and former PU leader Naveen Kumar, Narender Gujjar, Kuldeep Singh and others.

The brawl occurred when Naveen and his associates thrashed a Sector-38 resident, Parminder Singh, near Talwar Dairy in Sector 15 and when Naveen was brought to the police station, his supporters held a protest outside the police station.

Former PU leader Narender Gujjar, Kuldeep Singh, along with their accomplices, then forcefully entered the premises of Sector 11 police station asking for Naveen, who was nabbed by the police. The students then thrashed the reader of the police station and high drama was witnessed. The police then took stock of the situation and arrested the accused.

Accused Narender Gujjar has a tainted past and has been arrested in several criminal cases. A case under Sections 147,148,149, 323, 506,332 and 353 of the IPC has been registered.

Second case of assault on cop within a week

Only last week, a police head constable, Janak Raj, was assaulted while returning home. He was abducted and later thrown near the forest area in Sector 25 by four tipsy youths whom he had caught drinking at a public place.

Five arrested for planning robbery

The police arrested five persons, who were planning to commit a robbery near Daria village. The accused have been identified as Situ, a resident of Ram Darbar, Ashish Kumar, a resident of Indira Colony, Mani Majra, Gagandeep, a resident of Sector 35, Ashwani Kumar and Nitu, residents of Ram Darbar. Three country-made pistols with six live cartridges, a knife and a sharp-edged weapon were recovered from them. A case under Sections 399, 402 IPC and 25-54-59 Arms Act has been registered at the Industrial Area police station.

The police said two accused Ashwani and Nitu had been sent to judicial custody, while the remaining three Situ, Ashish and Gagandeep were taken in police custody.

1 held for impersonation

Local police today arrested a person in a case of impersonation as he was found appearing in an interview in place of someone else for the post of peon in the Panjab and Haryana High Court. The police arrested Ravinder Kumar, a resident of Sector 52. The name of the actual candidate is also Ravinder Kumar. A case under Section 420 of the IPC has been registered.

Carrom tourney from Nov 3

The Chandigarh Carrom Association will organise 13th Raj Kumar Babuta Memorial Carrom Ranking Tournament from November 3 to 5, at St Stephen’s School, Sector 45.

Organisers said the players will compete in events including Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Boys’ Singles (Junior), Girls’ Singles (Junior), Boys’ Singles (Sub-Junior) and Girls’ Singles (Sub-junior).

The top three position holders in each of the event will be awarded with a cash prizes.

Interested players can confirm their entries till October 29 with the organisers.

Punjab defeat HP

Punjab cricket team defeated Himachal in the ongoing Syed Mustaq Ali Trophy (North Zone) being held at DPS Cricket Academy Rohtak. In their second match of the tournament, Punjab team defeated Himachal by 16-runs. After opted to bat first Punjab team scored a total of 148 for 6 in 20 overs.

Mandeep Singh scored an unbeaten 59 off 30 studded with four boundaries and five sixes. For Himachal KS Dewan took 2 for 17 while AS Bali grabbed 2 for 25. In reply, Himachal team managed to score 132 for 7 in the allotted slot of 20 overs.
