Limited options for PG medical studies in state
Dehradun, October 15 As of now, only Haldwani Medical College is offering 27 PG seats, of which 14 are reserved for state candidates and 13 are open. Efforts of the authorities to increase the number of seats from 27 to 30 are facing hurdles due to the absence of the faculty in different departments and objections raised by the Medical Council of India. Besides this, 16 PG seats are reserved in Uttar Pradesh medical colleges for serving doctors in Uttarakhand who are members of the Provincial Medical Health Services. This arrangement was made owing to the absence of PG seats in Uttarakhand and is expected to end soon. For these seats, doctors do not have to appear for any entrance test and are graded according to certain norms. However, admission to Haldwani Medical College is based on an entrance test. After the status of a deemed university was granted to the Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust (HIHT), it is not bound by rules to set aside certain percentage under government quota. “The scenario for postgraduate studies in the state is bleak. As Srinagar Medical College will take time to start postgraduate studies, the only option is the Haldwani college. Here also, only 14 seats are reserved for students belonging to the state. The government did not take up the issue of reserving at least certain percentage of seats at HIHT. Lots of questions are being raised about the selection procedure for 16 seats reserved in Uttar Pradesh medical colleges. Many doctors have even moved court in this regard,” said Dr DP Joshi, general secretary of the Provincial Medical and Health Services. |
