Three-yr-old girl raped in school
Ludhiana, October 12
A three-year-old girl was allegedly raped in a private school located the in Hargobind Nagar area here yesterday. The matter came to light today after the police registered a case and detained a few in this connection. The police also got the girl medically examined to substantiate whether the rape was committed or not, the report of the medical examination is awaited, said investigating officer Sandeep Kapoor.

Despite claiming several innocent lives in the city recently, drivers of the “killer” garbage-lifting trucks belonging to the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation refuse to learn any lesson from the past.

Labour Commissioner’s driver Vipan Sharma was allegedly manhandled by protesting Textile Mazdoor Union workers outside the labour department office here today as the former tried to request the agitating workers to let a peon (a woman) fetch water from a tap.

The users of Blackberry mobile phones in the city have been passing through tough time for the past few days. The delay in sending messages and emails along with Internet disruptions have been caused by the core switch failure, according the statement by the Canada-based mobile maker.

40 full-grown trees felled
Ludhiana, October 12
The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation seems to have been rocked by another scam. About 40-odd full-grown trees have gone missing “under mysterious circumstances” from a park located in the I-Block of Sarabha Nagar. While members of the park management committee claimed that municipal officials cut the trees, MC Zonal Commissioner Amarjit Singh Sekhon said the committee members had told him that these trees never existed in the park.

284 patients examined at medical camp

Desh Bhagat Ayurvedic College & Hospital organised a four-day free eye check-up and surgery camp on the college campus here today. Inaugurating the camp, Desh Bhagat Group chairman, Dr Zora Singh and vice-chairperson Tejinder Kaur, said the institute has been providing the medical facilities to the people at subsidised rates for the past 15 years.

To mark the World Arthritis Day, the Punjab Rheumatology Clinic, in association with the local branch of Indian Medical Association (IMA), today organised a public awareness lecture on arthritis, which was followed by a free check-up camp. IMA president Dr Kulwant Singh inaugurated the camp while Dr Karamvir Goyal, secretary released a booklet on arthritis.

Demand to repair road
The district congress committee president Pawan Dewan has asked the civic authorities to repair the caved in roads in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar around the city centre. Presiding over a meeting of the party workers in Ward 59, he said the road damaged during rains was still awaiting repair while the MC and the Ludhiana Improvement Trust were closing their eyes to misery of the residents. He later went round the area to take stock of the situation. He said he had found roads in quite a pitiable condition. Dewan expressed surprise as to why the civic administration had not woken up to the problem so far although the monsoons were long over.

The Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) youth festival offered glimpses of the rich and vibrant Punjabi culture. On a more serious note, students enacted short skits to create awareness about social evils such as female foeticide and drug addiction in Ludhiana on Wednesday.
