Amritsar, September 20
Facing flak over the rising incidents of snatching and petty crime, the city police in a special campaign busted four criminal gangs here today. In the process, the police recovered as many as 10 motorcycles, an Activa scooter and a car besides seven country-made pistols and revolvers, 16 cartridges and 24 pairs of gold earrings snatched from various parts of the city.

It nabbed six persons belonging to the gangs. But 12 others are still absconding and a manhunt has been launched to arrest them.

In the first case, the CIA staff nabbed three snatchers, who were part of a major gang involved in lootings in various parts of the city. It was the same gang, which robbed a man of Rs 3.5 lakh at a pistol point in Ludhiana Railway Station about one and half month back, revealed Police Commissioner RP Mittal.

Those arrested are identified as Sukhwinder Singh of New Golden Avenue, Jujhar Singh of Kot Khalsa and Davinder Singh of Namdev Colony, Sultanwind. The police recovered two pistols of .32 bore, one .312 bore besides live cartridges and 16 earrings. Mittal said the CIA staff had got to know that the accused had made a gang, which included a woman, and possessed arms.

Acting on a tip-off, the police party carried out a raid near Snake temple near Sultanwind canal from where the police nabbed the three. However, their eight accomplices fled in a Scorpio vehicle.

Interestingly, Davinder Singh got released on bail in May this year. He has committed 35 snatchings since then.

Those who escaped from the spot include Gurwant Singh and his wife Palwinder Kaur, Mandeep Singh, Jaswant Singh, Baldev Singh, Sunny, Deepak Kumar and Sajan, all residents of different localities situated on Sultanwind road here. During investigations it was found that the members of the gang have snatched earrings from 36 women in various incidents, informed the Police Commissioner.

Busting another gang, the CIA staff apprehended one Bikramjit Singh of Gurnam Nagar, who worked as jeweler, while his two accomplices Ranjit Singh and Dilbagh Singh of same localities fled. The gang was involved in stealing luxury cars from various parts of the city and selling them by forging documents and changing name plates. The police recovered a Skoda. A pistol and 100 gram of intoxicant powder was seized from him. They had stolen the car from the Shivala Bhaia area.

During investigations, it came to light that that the accused, who worked as a salesman in jewellery shop, used to regularly visit Agra and Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. Then they used to target a jeweler and loot them. “They had looted jeweller at gunpoint in Satta Bazaar of Mathura in which he was caught while his accomplices had managed to escape. Yesterday, after specific information Bikramjit was caught near Jahajgarh area,” revealed Mittal.

Similarly, the Rambagh police caught one Karamjit Singh, alias Lucky, of Gurnam Nagar locality from whom the police recovered a .12 bore pistol, live cartridges and a stolen motorcycle besides 50 grams of intoxicant powder.

During interrogations the police seized eight motorcycles which he stole from various parts of the city. “As selling of vehicles having original documents is much easier, Karamjit used to steal two wheelers having original documents with it,” said the Police Commissioner.

Meanwhile, the police arrested one Sonal of Shaheed Udham Singh Colony who was caught with stolen motorcycle and a pistol of .303 bore. During investigations, he revealed that he along with his two accomplices Amrit Vishal and Darshan Singh of Gate Hakima used to loot people and steal vehicles at gunpoint. Amrit Vishal and Darshan Singh were at large.

He said the stolen vehicles would be returned to their owners after completing the necessary formalities.

It’s like a followed decorum. Every time a big banner, multi-star cast movie is to be released, the filmwallahs have to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple. After Akshay Kumar, it was actor-singer Harbhajan Mann who came along with the star cast of his latest flick, Yaara O Dildara on Tuesday afternoon.

“Whenever my film or album is to be released I make it a point to come to the holy city and seek strength and blessings,” says the actor.

Another routine that he follows is of coming up with family entertainers attached with a social message. “I have always tried to highlight real life issues in my movies. If it’s Harbhajan Mann, people know that they are going to be entertained but not without giving a moment of thought,” he says.

This time it’s about family. “Yaara O Dildara is light hearted film that revolves around joint family and the generational issues cropping in it. It is not an overdose of emotional drama but a feel-good, happy movie,” briefs Harbhajan. It also stars Gulzar Inder Chahal, Tulip Joshi, Jonita Doda, Kabir Bedi and Gurpreet Ghuggi. It opens world wide along with Speedy Singhs on Friday. Feeling the competition? “I don’t want to comment on that. But I am sure the audience will like our film as it is a quality entertainer,” says Harbhajan.

Actor Jonita Doda, who plays the female lead, is excited about the fresh treatment of the script. “The story is not just about relationships between a family but also about finding true love. It has emotions, romance, humor and a strong message for the generations out there who are living in a joint family.” It’s her second Punjabi movie after Chak Jawana but the lady sure has her hands full with other projects. Doing films down south, Jonita would be seen in Malayalam film Adhikaram and Tamil movie Makklpodai. Where does that leave Pollywood? “I am open to good scripts in Punjabi films. The industry has seen huge upsurge and quality work is being done. I am glad to be a part of it,” says the actor.

Actor-producer Gulzar Inder Chahal who plays the brother of Harbhajan Mann in the movie too feels that Punjabi cinema has finally found its status amongst the audience, “There is no dearth of good scripts and the production standards too are rising.” His association with Harbhajan Mann and Punjabi cinema goes back to film Jag Jeondeya De Mele and Heer-Ranjha. “It’s my second film after Jag Jeondeya De Mele. And I am also playing lead in I Am Singh directed by Puneet Issar. It based on mistaken identity crisis and hate crimes against Sikh community in the US after 9/11.”

Decks cleared for city’s first flyover project
GS Paul
Tribune News Service

Amritsar, September 20
Even as the flyover project of Amritsar Improvement Trust at Sant Singh Sukha Singh (4S) Chowk has hit a roadblock before it could begin, the stage is all set for launching the construction of four-lane flyover at Kitchlu Chowk in the city.

This 900-metre-long elevated road would be the first project which would be constructed within the city and would give a genuine relief to the commuters from traffic snarls.

Nevertheless, after performing the bidding formalities, the Improvement Trust has allotted the job to SP Singla Company for Rs 17.77 crore for constructing this flyover to be perched on a single pier technique. It was an astonishing bid amount quoted by the company because it’s almost half the amount as estimated by the RITES team, which was Rs 34 crore. However, this flyover would be built-up under the supervision of RITES team only.

Meanwhile, other companies like MJ Construction Company quoted Rs 22.20 crore, Deepak Builders Rs 24.50 crore, Tatia SE Company 24.6 crore, C and C Construction Private Limited Company asked for Rs 40.5 crore for the project. Nevertheless, the officials said that the work issuing formalities would be furnished within a week.

Sanjeev Khanna, Chairman, Improvement Trust, said it would take 15 months to execute the project. “It is a surprise development that we could get such a lucrative bid for the project from this Panchkula-based company and the formalities would be completed within a week’s period and we cannot afford to delay it any more. Since the project would be looked after by the RITES, the Improvement Trust would pay them 7 per cent of the amount in lieu of their expertise in supervising and executing the project,” he said.

Elaborating further, SE Rajiv Sekhri said the flyover would start from Sifti International and end at BDPO’s office and would have service lanes, as need be. Besides, helping in streamlining traffic on this most busiest stretch, it would also help in beautification of Kitchlu Chowk. We have no plans to do any alteration with the chowk. The plans are afoot to install span-type technique and the chowk underneath it would be as it is.

y It would be the first flyover to be built-up within the holy city. The one which was earlier demarcated at Sant Singh Sukha Singh (4S) Chowk could not be executed because the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has raised objections over the site stating that it is located within a 100-metre radius of the Summer Palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in Company Bagh.

y Set up in 1974, RITES is a Government of India Enterprise that provides comprehensive engineering, consultancy and project management services in the transport infrastructure sector under a single roof.
