HOGging the limelight
It is a relatively regular Saturday afternoon. The absent-minded moment of traffic, the crazily parked posh cars outside a row of restaurants, traffic cops hiding (that's called official duty by the way) under the shade of trees….it is just another day. Till….we hear a roar, and we would know it with our eyes closed that nothing else sounds like 'it'.
What follows is a gurgling noise that roars across Chandigarh, catching momentum full-throttle! These are the ghost riders, the men in black, flaming and burning with passion - high on something that riders call 'a ride'. They are the HOG riders and this is North India's first Harley Davidson owners' ride. The city wakes from the routine to take a look at the 54 Harley Davidson bikes, passionate riders, enthusiastic pillions and curious onlookers. Himalayan Harley at DT mall had not seen, obviously not heard anything like this before. Written clearly on every riders face was just one simple thing — 'This is the way of life'. We were soon to figure out; indeed it was! Almost 54 riders, had been one with the road after a long ride from Delhi to Chandigarh and each one of them had brought back something. "A long ride would normally do two things, it clears your mind and restores your faith," shares Karandeep Singh, a HOG rider from Ropar. It also uses a lot fuel! Who is thinking about it here? Cut it. Didn't we say it was about a way of life! Manya Bhasin from Delhi nods in approval. "Exciting, thrilling, amazing; I am having a roaring time. Harley Davidson is a cult and you got to feel what it adds in you." Light touring bikes, standard cruisers, Harley Davidson and the line-up is eye-catching and picture perfect. Some things are unique and this machine slips easily into the category. Even the sound of the engine is patented; do we need to validate more on the character? According to Gaurav Gulati, one of the organisers from Himalayan Harley, "This is one-of-its-kind HOG ride. We would carry forward this tradition every year. Harley Davidson is a cult machine; we would like to acquaint more passionate riders to it." The monsters parked outside Himalayan Harley were not vying for attention; they deserved every bit of it. So did the Harley owners and their mean machines. "You have to sit on the machine to be able to understand, feel the vibration and here its pure mechanical throb," provides a Chandigarh based HOG rider who could only describe the experience and machine in two words - no words! No plastic, no frills, a pure legacy, Saturday afternoon indeed roared! jasmine@tribunemail.com

China’s art market
The art world shook last February, when a report by The European Fine Art Foundation (TEFAF) revealed that China had overtaken the United Kingdom to become the world’s second largest art market. The art world shook again weeks later when Art Price, the industry’s final word on such matters, announced that upon its review, China topped the United States as the No. 1 market.
What are Chinese investors buying? Everything from Pablo Picasso’s “Femme Lisant (Deux Personnages),” for $21.3 million, to exclusive rights, to Elvis Presley’s earliest known live recordings, which will hit the auction block by October 22 in Hong Kong. In a country where only 60 years ago there was no such thing as an art market, the appetite for fine arts, antiquities and good old-fashioned, Hollywood-type memorabilia is big. China’s disposable income has multiplied 10-fold in the past 20 years, according to the China-based Hurun’s list of the rich individuals. The annual study shows 64 percent growth in average wealth over the past two years, 400-500 billionaires (the world’s most), and close to a million millionaires— average age, 39. “More and more money is sitting on the sidelines and looking for a place to go,” says Jeff Rabin of ArtVest Partners, a firm specializing in art investments. With financial markets experiencing so much volatility, arts and memorabilia increasingly seem like viable investments. In the past two years alone, auction house Christies has increased partnerships in Hong Kong from 95 to 130, all of them Chinese. In addition, the venerable auctioneer is placing native Mandarin speakers in their showrooms in London, New York, Geneva and Paris. WHERE ELVIS IS THE KING The rising level of wealth in China has begun to trickle from major cities to outlying areas, though the vast majority of the nation’s 1.3 billion still live in poverty. “It sort of breaks down to those people who are quite wealthy and know something about art to those who are really more farmers or industrialists and don’t have the knowledge or the access to understand the art market,” said Rabin. But even the people who may not understand high-value art and antiquities have a place at auction houses when the hammer comes down, in particular, for Western celebrity memorabilia. Darren Julien of Beverly Hills’ Julien’s Auctions is currently planning his “Legends” event next month in Macau. Items will include the rights to a 1955 Elvis concert as well as a dress worn by Marilyn Monroe, Madonna’s gold bustier and a note signed by John Lennon. “One person told me that they would rather have this than a Monet,” said Julien, who bases a third of his business in the Asian market. He recently put a basketball up for auction signed by Michael Jackson and Michael Jordan. The estimated value was about $500. It sold for $294,000. Part of the appetite for western items is due to the fact that most all of China has been cut off from western culture for so long, yet the best of the world’s performing arts were coming from U.S. and European music, movies and television. “The real good films were the American films. It was the only view they had of another life outside their own,” said Julien. “When you’re buying these things, you’re buying a memory.” Never mind that art and memorabilia markets remain unregulated and opaque and purchases are sometimes ill-liquid in after markets once the items have been acquired. “If people really want something,” said Julien, “they’re going to do whatever it takes to get it.” — Reuters

The chosen one
Without doubt he is a man of few words. But then more than holding listeners in rapt attention, renowned artist Akbar Padamsee (in Chandigarh for a lecture organised by Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi on Friday evening at Government Museum-10 auditorium) believes in — “listening to my inner self.” And it’s this inner reflection and contemplation that defines his works — be it the astounding metascapes, arresting heads or sensuous nudes — a deeply meditative quality pervades his oeuvre. And his inner voice, he has never allowed to be quietened or smothered. Not when he was asked to remove two of his nude paintings from an exhibition in Mumbai way back in 1954; nor when a top-notch collector in Paris asked him not to paint for five years with a return promise of making him an international artist! Says Padamsee, “Success can’t be measured in terms of how many paintings are bought by a dealer. One needs to evaluate success and live life on one’s own terms.” And he has, ever since the JJ School of Art, Mumbai, opened a new world to him. He didn’t choose art but proclaims, “I was the chosen one.” One of the first pioneering artists the nation has produced, a modernist in the true sense he has never shied away from experimentation, even used plastic emulsion, a kind of a precursor to acrylics, as a medium. In more recent times, he has held an exhibition of computer art and photography remains his constant muse too. On nudes, his recurring leitmotif, he gives no high sounding explanations: “A nude is a nude. A woman’s body is formidable provided shown in the right light … my nudes are dressed in shadow.” Among the host of mediums—painting lithograph, photography, sculpture—that he has worked in, he says, “Each explores a different part of me.” Sculptures, he shares, can be created blindfolded and in photography, “It’s important how you see, not how you do.” The biggest strength of creation he finds is in chaos for “order is already in order and chaos is the beginning in which lies the energy.” There is energy in colours too, which he can control with astonishing dexterity moving from high speed to a screeching halt. Like a musical octave? Indeed, he agrees there is a correlation between the wavelength of sound and that of colours. But between his intensely brooding images including those of Christ and Judas and the universal human struggle he doesn’t pinpoint a parallel. His iridescent landscapes he might dub as metascapes (metaphysical landscapes), often drawing inspiration from Sanskrit texts, but he refuses to be drawn into philosophical queries about morality. Issues of moral judgment, however, do bother him. The world, he feels, has become far more intolerant since he was arrested on charges of obscenity. He adds, “That was a civil fight with the police and the court that ultimately ruled in my favour.” He isn’t sure he can pick up cudgels against the self-appointed moral police of today, “for who can take on goondas?” Indeed, much has changed since he began his artistic odyssey, in the art world too. Today, he observes, there is experimentation for the sake of experimentation. “Works are being hailed as avant garde without passing the ultimate litmus test of time.” At 83, his creations including two abstract films too, have not only triumphed over the passage of time but even found room along with the world’s great art and artists at prestigious Binealles and galleries. The world in his words might be “flying today”, Padamsee learnt the art of overtaking others long ago. Simply, and brilliantly, by paying heed to the voice within. |

Tribute to womanhood
Enter the world of a woman — fun-loving, caring, and joyous; as a bride, a mother or a sister! Encapsulating all the facets of the fairer sex, Haryana Tourism, together with the Directorate of Census Operations, Haryana, has brought together all photographers who promote the thought of woman empowerment in an exhibition — To Be a Woman. The exhibition displays the entries received in the All-India Photography Competition held earlier this year.
Apart from the very colourful representations, captions were as interesting as the photographs. The one by Harvinder Singh, which one the first prize, displays the never-say-die spirit of women and shows sportswomen celebrating victory on the field. Parda by Mahesh Garg, the winner of the second prize, shows two Rajasthani women in red clothing wearing the very conservative parda on their heads. Photographs have their own meaning and are an extension of the cameraman's perception of art. Focus by Mithila Chaku is a fine representation of the heritage attached with women dressing up; the focal point remaining the elaborate nose-ring worn by a village woman. Another one of those happy moments has been captured by Dr Anand Kumar Sharma. A carefree young girl with unkempt hair shows the bliss of innocence. The holiness path by Atul Dixit is in perfect coordination with the rule of the third. A yellow sari next to a river and the reflection distorted by moving water makes for one of those great shots. Some photographs were also with a strong message. I am not for sale by Dev Kumar shows the dummy of a young girl on a staircase promoting sale. The Woman by Tanushree Dutta is a perfect picture of a Punjabi woman. The glowing face and a red Phulkari covering the head is symbolic of everything Punjabi. Then there is one with a woman in a black and white, and a stark red bindi on her forehead. (On till September 11) vasudha@tribunemail.com

Junk addiction!
Can't stop eating junk food while watching TV? You may think it may be because you like the taste, but it's not the case. It is because we are such creatures of habit that once we have associated a place with a certain kind of food, like popcorn at the cinema, we will keep eating it - even if it's stale, scientists say.
Researchers from the University of Southern California devised a test to see what causes us to overeat. They gave people about to enter a cinema a bucket of just-popped fresh popcorn, or stale week-old popcorn. Moviegoers who didn't usually eat popcorn at the movies ate much less stale popcorn than fresh popcorn because it just didn't taste good. But those who said they typically had popcorn at the movies ate about the same amount of popcorn whether it was fresh or stale. In other words, for those in the habit of snacking at the movies, it made no difference whether the popcorn tasted good or not. "When we've repeatedly eaten a particular food in a particular environment, our brain comes to associate the food with that environment and makes us keep eating as long as those environmental cues are present," the Daily Mail quoted lead author David Neal as saying. —

GET PHYSICAL
Achieving a desired weight is not the end of the road in weight loss. It's easy to think that once you've reached your goal weight, the journey is over. But do not be fooled. In fact now begins another challenge. It may seem hard to believe, but taking the weight off is the easy part but maintaining it is where the challenge lies. It's time to begin your maintenance program and continue on your journey towards a healthy life.
As you enter the maintenance phase, it's important not to revert back to the way of eating that caused you to gain weight in the first place. You must remember that maintaining a healthy weight is a lifelong commitment. Losing weight is tough and it can frighteningly be regained. An effective maintenance program is the only way out. Studies show that without a maintenance programs, 75 per cent of those people who lose weight regain it within one year, and 95 per cent within three years. On the other hand, people who follow maintenance programs do significantly better, with a 60 per cent success rate at three years. Thus it's easy to conclude that having a maintenance program after you lose weight and meet your initial goals is a critical step towards permanent weight loss. Weight maintenance is different from losing weight. When you are trying to lose weight, you follow extreme diets and exercise methods. You push yourself to the very limit so as to get positive results. Also being overweight is a major motivator when it comes to weight loss. And when you start to lose weight, you have the gratification of watching the numbers on the scale get smaller and hearing compliments from friends and family. But there are no outward gratifications during maintenance. And once you lose weight, a major motivator is gone. You need to find motivation within yourself. Also maintaining weight requires you to avoid all fad diets and weight loss gimmicks. You need to focus on adopting a healthy lifestyle, which incorporates stable, healthy eating habits, together with regular exercise habits. Here are some tips to help you maintain your healthy weight: l Determine a healthy weight range: Know your weight and then determine a healthy weight range of about 1-2 kgs. By giving yourself a range, you account for the normal fluctuations in weight, which is a normal occurrence. l You can eat more calories in maintenance than in a weight loss plan: A gradual addition of about 200 calories is recommended. Concentrate on getting your extra calories by gradually increasing the portion sizes of the foods you're already eating rather than suddenly adding in sweets, fried stuff and fast food to your diet. l Plan all your meals: When you're going to a party or out to eat, decide ahead of time what you can do to make it easier to eat healthfully. Try to limit how much you eat out, especially early in your
programme. l Having regular low-calorie snacks throughout the day along with regular smaller meals is a good way to manage your hunger. Plan snacks as part of your overall calories for the day, and avoid eating unplanned calories. l When you're hungry between meals, drink a glass of water or eat a small fruit, and stay out of the kitchen. Try a no eating activity, such as taking a bath or reading a book, when you feel the urge to snack. l Limit alcohol: Alcohol provides a lot of empty calories and no nutritional benefit. l Balance calories with physical activity: Try to balance the number of calories you take in against the amount of physical activity you are willing to do each day. l Remain focused and con ntly motivate yourself: Remind yourself on how far you've come, how good you currently feel compared to how it used to be. Mentally remind yourself that your healthy behaviour has resulted in a healthy you. l Stay active: You need to accept the fact that you need regular physical activity in order to maintain your weight loss. Exercise daily, getting at least 30 minutes in every day, whether it's walking, jogging, running, biking, swimming, or something else. l Increase your muscle mass: This will help you increase your metabolic rate. Weight training at least 3 times a week. l Try to use other ways to respond to life's stresses besides eating. Take a brisk walk, start a new hobby, or calm yourself through meditation. l Self-monitoring of eating habits, physical activity, and emotional well-being are important components of a successful maintenance, weight loss
programme. l Stop viewing food as a reward or treat. Rather look at other options like buying new clothes, a visit to a spa, etc. l A return to old habits does not mean failure. Remember that having a lapse or relapse is not failing. You can and should get back on track. ( Kalra is a Chandigarh-based fitness expert)

Targeting PC
Gauri Khan and her coterie of star wives is not happy with Shah Rukh Khan's growing fondness for Priyanka Chopra. While there is nothing romantic between them, they are too close for the comfort of other people. Let's see how this develops! Poor PC, everyone is targeting her.
Bad Mausam
The release of Mausam is undergoing problems because the Indian Air Force has refused to clear a certain fight sequence featuring six planes and Shahid, of course.
Till that is cleared, the film won't get passed by the Censor Board. Producer Sheetal Talwar has gone to Delhi for a meeting with the top brass of IAF. Hope it works out well.
Rough patch
Sources say Priyanka Chopra is upset that Yash Raj Films has not cast her in any film after Pyaar Impossible. She thought she would get Dhoom 3 and Yash Chopra's film but she did not. YRF denies that there is any problem between PC and them.
Good friends
Ali Zafar and Katrina Kaif are quite fond of each other, apparently. Katrina still holds a torch for ex Sallu and jumped to his defence when Ali said that he found Khan intimidating.
Zafar is married with a kid. We hope there are no controversies here.
Grand musical
The music of Ra.One will be launched on Monday. There is a concert featuring Shah Rukh and Kareena and others. The launch will be held at Film City and is a grand event. The music has been composed by Vishal-Shekhar and Akon's Chamak Challo has already become a rage.
Meet the parents
Hollywood star George Clooney has taken his new girlfriend Stacy Keibler to meet his parents Nick and Nina. The 50-year-old actor, who began dating the former WWE diva just three months after splitting from Italian beauty Elisabetta Canalis, took her to his parents and Keibler is said to have hit it off with his mother straight away. "It's a big deal and Stacy knows it. She really took to George's mom and said she's a sweetheart," a source said. Many close to Clooney had thought the romance would be brief and are shocked at how well it is going."A lot of people thought it was going to be a fling. But it's not - it's at the serious point," a friend said.—

Television actress Mouni Roy who debuted as Krishna Tulsi in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and was seen in a reality show Pati, Patni Aur Woh with boyfriend Gaurav Chopra reveals her secrets for chilling out. Whenever she feels stressed out, she loves to dance and listens to soothing music. Dancing Since childhood, I have been very passionate about dancing. I like to perform on classical and western dance forms. When I was young, my favourite song was Piya Tose Naina Laage Re. And even today, when I feel a bit low, I dance to peppy and soulful songs which perk me up. Dancing keeps me fit as well. So it is two birds with one stone. Music I simply love music. I feel soft music is best medicine to cure stress in life. I like to listen to old Bollywood songs especially of Lata Mangeshkar. While in western music, I like songs by James Blunt. During college, I used to love listening to Enrique Iglesias. Reading books Apart from dancing and music, I love to read all kind of books-right from fiction books to autobiographies. I feel reading gives you more knowledge about different topics in the world. Among autobiographies I particularly liked Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler. I also like to read magazines. Movie buff I love movies. Whenever I feel a little low, I watch my favourite films both old and new. But nothing beats the joy of watching an old classic. Love to eat Eating really de-stresses your mind and I don't think there is any harm in having your favourite foods be it sweet dishes or ice creams. I gorge on my favourite foods but with in limits. I don't starve myself. Singing I also like singing apart from dancing and listening to music. I have learnt basic singing and can croon to old Hindi songs, which I feel connected to. Sleeping This is best way tode-stress, I think. I feel fresh after a sound sleep which lasts for eight hours at least. — HRM Shilpa Anand, who was last seen as Dr Riddhima Gupta in Star One's show Dill Mill Gayye, will now be seen in a film called Alert 24/7. She is thrilled to be working with superstar Sanjay Dutt. Shilpa will enact the role of a journalist in the film and has also signed on two more films. Unlike many other TV turned film actors, she is still cool with doing TV shows.
In Sasuraal Simar Ka, recently Simar kept a fast on teej for her husband Prem. She wore a lovely green and red ghagra but we were surprised to see that it was no similar but exactly the same lehenga that Akshara wore on Rashmi's wedding. This surely was an uncanny resemblance or maybe Simar borrowed the outfit from Akshara. We just hope this doesn’t happen in future. Repeating clothes is the last thing that we want on our television screens.
Geet Sagar, winner of music reality show X Factor India, hardly reveled in his success that he got a bigger opportunity. He has been signed to sing in a Karan Johar film. As the winner of the show, Geet has received Rs 50 lakh, a Tata Manza car.
