PU Student Council elections on September 2

Sending a clear signal of zero tolerance to violence on the campus ahead of the elections to the Panjab University Campus Student Council, the UT Police today issued bailable warrants against 12.

After staging protests and candlelight march in support of Anna Hazare, now the Anna supporters have starting adopting innovative ways to spread awareness about the Lokpal Bill among the masses. A painting and slogan writing competition was organised by India Against Corruption (IAC) for people from all walks of life to make them aware them about the mass movement.

GMCH doc complains to visiting MCI team
Chandigarh, August 26
In a written complaint to the visiting team of the Medical Council of India (MCI), a doctor of the gynecology department of Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Dr Alka Sehgal, has raised objections to the UT administration’s career advancement scheme (re-designation in higher cadre) and alleged that the scheme had been tailor made to benefit a selected few.

105 vehicles challaned

Keeping in view the increased number of complaints of wrong parkings along market roads/road berms in the city, the Chandigarh Traffic Police has started a special drive against wrong parking by deploying motorcycles, interceptor gypsies, recovery cranes in markets of Sector 7, 8, 9, 10, 11,17, 22, 26, 34 and 35.

The Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) scheduled to be conducted on August 28 for induction of officers in the flying, technical and ground duty branches, has got a much better response than expected, forcing the IAF authorities to change the venue of the examination to larger premises.

Mohali, August 26
A bus queue shelter in a state of neglect at the Phase II market in Mohali. Residents’ repeated pleas have fallen on deaf ears Insanitary conditions at Madanpur village and the coming up of an illegal “mini bus stand” have turned out to be among the eyesores in Phase II here. Residents have also complained of poor sanitation, non-functional streetlights, badly maintained parks and problem of stray dogs. Many roads in the area have potholes, especially the B-road outside one kanal houses, and another B-road outside 10 marla houses. The parking areas are also in a state of neglect.

BSNL cable thefts hit work in offices
Mohali, August 26
Repeated thefts of underground cables of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) in Phase IX has crippled the functioning of different government and private offices in Phases VII, IX and X. The worst affected were the the police control room and Phase VII police station.

A violent brawl between student leaders was today evaded at Postgraduate Government College (PGGC), Sector 11, by the college authorities and over 24 policemen, who intervened in an “aggressive” campaigning being done by representatives of certain student organisations on the campus.

Cash, jewellery stolen
Kalka: Cash and jewellery were stolen from a house at Ghatiwala village in Pinjore. Owner of the house Sher Singh said thieves had decamped with Rs 5 lakh in cash and jewellery. A case has been registered.

3 unidentified bodies found
Ambala, August 26 Three unidentified bodies were found on a roadside near Babehali village this morning. Two youths of Babaheri village, who were on their way to Ambala Cantt, spotted the bodies of a woman (30) and two boys aged 5 and 7 on the roadside and informed villagers who informed the police. The police arrived at the scene and shifted the bodies to the Civil Hospital, Ambala Cantt.

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday filed a detailed charge sheet in the local district court against Nishikant, the key suspect in the Punjab Engineering College (PEC) admissions scam, as well as the co accused, Mohinder Bajaj, and eleven students.

Simran murder case committed for sessions trial
Panchkula, August 26
A local court here today committed the Simran murder case for sessions trial. Simran was a student of International Institute of Fashion Design. Now, on the next hearing, the court will frame the charges against accused Tanmay. On the last hearing, the Panchkula police had filed a detailed chargesheet against Tanmay.

ATM fraud: Bail plea of accused dismissed
Panchkula, August 26
In the ATM fraud case, the Panchkula district courts dismissed the anticipatory bail application filed by IndusInd’s bank relationship officer, who had duped a bank customer of Rs 4.19 lakh. The fraud dates back to the time when Sharma, posted as a relationship officer at the Sector 9 branch of IndusInd Bank, contacted Attar Chand, who has a savings account in the bank’s Sector 11 branch. Sharma assured Chand that he could get him a higher rate of interest on his fixed deposits if he shifted them from the bank’s sector 11 branch to the one in Sector 9.

The police today arrested an accused for allegedly robbing a resident of Hallo Majra at knifepoint last night. The police arrested Charanjeet, who turned out to be a close relative of a UT police sub-inspector.

The police today booked five persons, including two women, in a dowry case on the complaint of Sandeep Kaur, a resident of Singhpura village.

Suspects in gangrape of schoolgirl held
Panchkula, August 26
A class 11 student of Delhi who was allegedly gangraped in Sector 20, Panchkula and at the Ridge View Hotel in Shimla was threatened by a Delhi-based crime boss to remain silent after the outrage was committed, investigations by the local police revealed. The ‘don’ made phone calls to the victim telling her if she did not “assist” the suspects he would kill her mother who lived in Delhi, the cops said.

Vignaesh N lifted the boys’ U-14 singles category title, while Fatehdeep Singh overcame Digvijay Singh Naruka in the boys’ U-18 category during the finals of the ongoing CLTA-AITA Talent Series Tennis Tournament for Boys and Girls (U-14 and U-18) held at the CLTA Complex and Lake Sports Club here today.

Satinder Sharma, International Grade - I Hockey Umpire, who claims to be the only Indian in the elite panel of International Hockey Federation has been appointed as a neutral umpire for the upcoming Men’s African Olympic Qualifier, Bulawayo, Zimbawe, to be held from September 2 to 11.
