Drunk cops create ruckus at Punjab minister’s house
Chandigarh, August 21
Posted for security duty at the Sector 39 residence of Punjab Forest Minister Tikshan Sood, two Punjab Police personnel, who were heavily drunk on duty, not only created a ruckus on Friday night but were up in arms against each other.

Police to seek blacklisting of Healthyway

Following large-scale frauds being committed by operators of Healthyway Immigration, the UT Police is all set to seek the blacklisting of the firm. UT denied central tobacco control funding

Becoming the first “smoke free” city in the country is proving dear for Chandigarh. Rather than commending the UT administration for achieving this feat, the central government appears to be penalizing it by denying it funds under the National Tobacco Control Programme to further strengthen implementation of anti-tobacco laws.

Novel initiative for special students

After nearly five years of efforts by parents of students, the city’s Government College of Art, Sector 10, has in a unique initiative introduced an advanced diploma course in fine arts exclusively for the deaf, dumb and mentally challenged from the current academic session.

AFT halts recovery from pension of Lt-Col
Chandigarh, August 21
The Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) has stopped the recovery of pay and allowances from the pension of a disabled Lieutenant Colonel who had been invalided out of the Army due to a psychiatric illness. It was found that the Controller of Defence Accounts (CDA) had incorrectly revised the date of his effective discharge from service to an earlier date and had started deducting the salary paid to him for the said period even though he was still in service.

The second day of Xpressions ’11 at Manav Mangal Smart School, here today was a crowd- puller and ended on a high note. “Abhi Baaki Hain - an Ode to Bollywood” was done up in a stylish manner with the nostalgia of the past and the present of Bollywood. The hallmark of the room was that the student volunteers were wearing T-shirts with famous dialogues of Hindi movies written on them.

377 residents told to move out of Mauli Jagran colony
Chandigarh, August 21
Residents go through a notice displayed by the estate office officials at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Colony, Mauli Jagran, on Sunday. The UT estate office today asked 377 residents of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Colony at Mauli Jagran to make their arrangements elsewhere as the colony will soon be demolished. A final list of residents who are ineligible under the UT’s Slum Rehabilitated Scheme was displayed at the colony today. Besides, prior announcements about the demolition were also made.

Residents ‘casual’ about servant verification
Panchkula, August 21
Even as the local police is yet to get any breakthrough in the murder case of a 65-year-old woman by a domestic help last night, the incident has brought to fore the callousness of local residents towards registering the details of their servants with the police. The family neither had any photograph of the servant nor idea about the address of his other family members.

UT Administration yet to decide on Sunday shopping
Chandigarh, August 21
With the trading community divided on the issue of Sunday shopping, the UT Administration is caught in a Catch-22 situation. More than two and a half months after the UT Administration “disfavoured” seven-day shopping on the plea of violation of labour laws under the Shops and Commerial Establishments Act, the administration is yet to decide on the issue.

Poor civic amenities mar Sector 8
Panchkula, August 21
Bumpy roads, heaps of garbage and faulty streetlights have made the life of Sector 8 residents miserable in Panchkula. While nearly half of streetlights in the area are lying out of order, leaving the streets of the sector dark during nights, the residents of kanal houses on the back lane of hotels are forced to live with the heaps of garbage dumped on the roadside.

390 recruits join ITBP

As many as 390 recruits, including 61 women, were inducted as general duty constables into the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) on completion of training at the force’s Basic Training Centre (BTC) at Ramgarh near here yesterday.

An AIDS awareness and health society of Postgraduate Government College, Sector 46, Chandigarh, organised an essay writing and slogan writing competition for the students on Saturday.

Ambala Cantt gets two parking lots
Ambala, August 21
In a major initiative to ease traffic congestion in Ambala Cantt the Municipal Corporation had developed two parking lots. This was announced by Deputy Commissioner Sameer Pal Srow, who is also the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation. Srow said the parking lots had been developed by the corporation at a cost of Rs 24 lakh. One of the parking lots was on the Railway Road at the old local bus stand site. It had an area of 12,000 square feet and a sum of Rs 13 lakh had been spent on the development of this parking lot.

Funds for link road repair misused
Dera Bassi, August 21
The Punjab Mandi Board record shows that it has spent Rs 2 lakh to repair a link road connecting to the Dera Bassi-Ramgarh road. However, in reality not a single penny was spent on ground.

Riding high on a fine batting performance by Salinder Salaria (63) and fine bowling by Abhisek Verma (5 for 7), Black Elephant Cricket Club trounced YPS Patiala by 104 runs in the preliminary stage of the Double League (under-14) Cricket Tournament held under the aegis of the Patiala Cricket Association at YPS grounds today.

Girl commits suicide
Dera Bassi: A 17-year-old girl, Puneeta, had allegedly committed suicide at her house on the Barwala road by hanging herself from a ceiling fan today.

Three arrested for rape, murder of woman
Chandigarh, August 21
With the arrest of three persons, the UT police today solved the blind murder case of a woman, Reshma, who was found brutally done to death in Colony Number 4 on July 2.

Woman booked for murdering husband
Mohali, August 21
The police has booked a woman, members of her family and others on murder charge, tampering with evidence and criminal conspiracy. In a complaint to the police, father of Jagveer Singh said his son was living with his wife Gagandep Kaur in Ivory Towers Society in Sector 70. He was working as a property dealer.

Sanjay romps home in golf
Chandigarh, August 21
Sanjay Talwar romped home winner in the under-50 age group logging 36 points in the Ebson Golf Tournament played on the Chandigarh Golf Club greens here today. Trailing the winner by just one point was GS Bakshi who occupied the second slot. In the 51-64 age group KS Bhullar was a clear winner with 38 points. There was a tie for the second slot, but Satbir Singh was declared the runner-up as he had a better back nine score.
