KASH for CASH!
Neither for gaining popularity, nor for screen presence; neither for any hype nor for anything else did Kashmera Shah shed her clothes, blindfolded herself and got a body massage done by 12 boys on national TV. The reason she offers - "Money".
The reality show, Superstud, School of Flirt, offered her a huge amount, which she couldn't not refuse, "And what's wrong in it if on the small screen I am able to make the same amount of money as any leading Bollywood actor does by acting in films," comes from Kashmera, who was in the city on Saturday to walk as a showstopper for Amit Kashyap's show. Precisely for the same reason, she has in the past said yes to Bigg Boss, Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao and Desi Girl. For the same reason, she also does the controversial calendar, Kash; too bold as per Indian standards. But Kashmera doesn't feel that entertainment is going overboard. She argues, "If one can in India choose a prime minister at the age of 18, start drinking by 21, one can wisely choose the right kind of work as well. A calendar or a reality show like Superstud are only made if there is a market" And when it's not about money, then she loves to do item songs! "That I would only do if the song is worth it; if the choreographer knows his job well and if the offer floats in from the big banner production house." She also enjoys modelling off and on, but on clear terms, "I will either open the show or close it. The condition to walk the ramp was same even when I had just started modelling." She adds that for Vikram She is 'not at all boastful' when she further explains why she has survived in the industry, "I am naturally well-endowed. Also I have always been myself, even in the reality shows and never pretended." So, even when it came to people raising objections about her boyfriend, Krushna Abhishek being five years younger to her, she never paid attention. "It seemed fine to me. Somebody has to be older, so what in our case if it was me. Our relationship worked for five years and no further explanations were needed." In the age of body contouring, Kashmera is against going under the knife. "Only in case of a deformity should one get a corrective surgery done." As for her personal fitness routine, she says, she doesn't workout in the gym. "It's only because of the healthy, nutritional diet that I am so fit." Just when she is done about her calendar, her massage episode, item songs and her boyfriend, at last, she talks about Anna Hazare and his cause. "I am his fan. He has done what every Indian aspired to do - raise a voice against corruption - but couldn't. He is the voice of a billion Indians and I support him." Another one joins the war against
corruption! ashima@tribunemail.com
Game for ROLE
The natural route after winning a beauty title in India leads to Bollywood, but not everyone is lucky and Reshmi Ghosh, who was crowned Miss India Earth in 2002, has realised this in no time. Either she could wait for the rare opportunity to knock at her door or take what was being offered on the platter - a role in TV soap! "Ekta Kapoor offered me a role in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and I grabbed it. There couldn't have been a better launch pad for me as I didn't have a Godfather," she says, who was in Chandigarh for a fashion show. |

SHEER pleasure!
Shopping for Indian trousseau wedding is an uphill task. Trousseau shopping is any day a tiring, challenging yet the most interesting thing for a woman. Keeping the tradition alive, designer duo from Delhi Niket and Jainee, known for their fusion styles, launched their bridal wear at Soh Koh Clothing, Sector-26, a multi-designer outlet of Chandigarh. Before you get down to looking at their collection, the husband and wife duo likes to share that every garment is a reflection of their love; the bright colours, and textures carry something of their blooming and passionate relationship. Their bridal collection uses bright hues, as Niket talks about the current trend in bridal wear, "This season it is going to be heavy kundan work and embellishments on lehangas and saris. Other than this, multi-striped brocades combination of embroidered net sleeves with velvet is used on blouses." Niket likes to vote for sheer nets, silks and velvets when it comes to fabrics. "The colour palette extends from golden, nude beige, wine, light pink and deep red. Yellow to orange hued look compliments the heavy embroidery work, whereas citrus hued saris go for wedding attire," adds Niket, for whom bright colours are a representation of prosperity, love and a new beginning! It is time for Jainee to take us around the collection at Soh Koh. Fusion is the name that she drops repeatedly. "For wedding it is always interesting to mix and match, something like achkhan with layered lehenga or with ankle length capri, asymmetrical top with crushed long skirt or even anarkali," offers Jainee, coming up with more combinations. "We have made long open jacket that can be worn with embroidered capri or with lehenga. It can also be worn with churidaar or in Anarkali format." For post wedding function, the designer suggests rushed silk kaftan as a dress or to be worn with legging. The duo has participated in highly acclaimed fashion shows in both India and abroad. They have been the official designers of Miss Delhi Show 2007, Mrs Gladrags 2008, Mrs Globe International Contestant 2008 and the prestigious Dar London Hair Stylist Show. Last note from the duo, "We work with geometric edges, sharp stripes and seamless symphony of striking ebony and subtle ivory; the timeless combination of black and white revamped in a range of fusion and ethnic wear for today's women. Style is what you believe and this is our collective decision," they smile. jasmine@tribunemail.com |
The INSIDE of fashion
Clothing and fashion boutiques in Chandigarh are getting innovative by the day. Now, apart from the clothes and accessories, there is one more thing that will appeal to you — the extravagant, well-done interiors at these places!
And why not, the customers nowadays prefer to visit outlets that have an ambience to go with the collections. Says Shagun Sehgal, an economics department pass-out from PU, "As a customer I feel the interiors of any boutique speak a lot about their class. They should have amazing interiors to make a lasting impression." Shelly's Wardrobe, Sector-8, Chandigarh, a small fashion showroom earlier, has recently shifted base to a bigger location in the same sector. And now it boasts of rich wallpapers, crystal chandeliers, round velvet couches; a tall lamp shade and a mini-LCD playing Fashion TV! Says the owner, Shelly, "I wanted to give a very rich Western studio kind of effect to my new showroom because when a customer enters he or she notices the display first up.
Nowadays, the look of your showroom is very important. " A proper studio type look with three full length wall mirrors, a glass table to sit and discuss about your dream suits, sarees, and kurtis; a combination of green and blue wall paints at Taruni…a traditional boutique was recently shifted from a shop to a residential place in Sector 7, Chandigarh. Shares Junu Gandhi, owner, "Interiors are very essential because the moment clients enter, the ambience leaves an impact on their mind." She adds, "I wanted to give my boutique a studio-type of look as compared to earlier times." Mannie Kaur has also lately opened up a Western wear boutique named Mannie Kaur's Closet in Sector-9, Chandigarh. Two huge wooden mirrors with a wooden frame and intricate carvings; dresses stacked according to occasions and hangers having titles like 'while going to beach', 'while going for shopping', 'while going for a cocktail', handbags hanging down from the ceiling…the place has it all! Says the owner Mannie Kaur, "I always wanted to open a small store of my own and design it myself with good interiors and trust me I did work a lot
on them." Although an established boutique and famous for its Indian dresses, Babi's boutique, Sector-8, Chandigarh too has intriguing interiors. The traditional suits and sarees hung on to wrought iron stands of light gold colour, a huge wooden frame mirror with golden carving and a maroonish ceiling. And the most interesting of all is an antique telephone set on the wall! Says Babi Grewal, owner of the boutique, "Your product is equally important, but when I opened my boutique, I somehow wanted it to have a living room kind of feel. I worked on the interiors accordingly." She adds, "When women come in for discussing their wedding dresses it almost takes a whole day, so interiors do make a difference." So, next time you visit a boutique, make sure you do notice its interiors because a lot of thought and hard work has gone into them!

Cap of Good Hope
No prizes for guessing what is the trendiest piece of garment at the ongoing Lakme Fashion Week: Gandhi caps depicting 'I Am Anna Hazare'.
The third day of the Lakme Fashion Week Winter-Festive collection saw several guests and models supporting the anti-corruption crusader. "I am supporting Anna Hazare and thought of distributing Gandhi caps at Lakme Fashion Week. With this, everyone across the world would come to know about the issue he is fighting for and hence more support would pour in," Viren Shah, President of the Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association, said. Guests at the Lakme Fashion Week were seen wearing Gandhi caps while models were seen holding them in their hands during Debarun, Shymal and Bhumika's show. While designer duo Parvesh-Jai have also been supporting Hazare by wearing a black ribbon and a badge that says 'I Am Anna'? "I have been wearing a black ribbon and the badge for the last two days. I find it absurd that Anna was arrested...as what he is doing is for the betterment of the country," Parvesh said. "I am supporting Anna. I hope people will become aware about the issue and support him," Jai said. — PTI

Black is back and how!
Sukhmani Is black a colour? Yes and no. Since it absorbs all light and reflects none, it's not perceived as a colour by the human eye; yet it's called a colour. Black is a favourite among most designers, especially while doing contemporary décor. It's no longer a dark and morbid colour, instead it's perceived as sophisticated and classy. n Black is a great choice for an accent wall. Paint it in glossy, matt finish or use textured wallpaper to showcase your glassware or artwork. n Black when used on the floor can give an extravagant and flamboyant look to your space. n If you wish to add a dramatic look to your décor, use black and contrast it with different colours (in the right ratio). n Black adds a focal point of colour that binds and anchors a sophisticated look to your home. So outline the fixtures or specific areas you want to highlight. n For rooms which you feel are very bright, paint walls with black as it absorbs brightness and gives a soothing feel to your room. n It's an excellent choice for powder rooms, kitchens and corporate offices. Offset it with metallic silver or chrome to get the opulent look. n Black leather furniture in a white setup coupled with black tables, light fixtures and a few accessories gives a clean crisp look. n Black lacquer is very popular in Japanese décor, used with white and red, it creates a magical look. n Teens love black in their rooms to give them a sense of drama. Although it's advisable to always tone down the effect with a soothing accent colour. n Black and white is a combination that's becoming a rage this year. Accent this combo with a touch of hot pink, lime green or turquoise to dramatise the look. (Sukhmani is Chandigarh-based interior and landscape designer) |

A twist in the tale
Fourteen year old Avika Gor has turned the tables around in her show Sasuraal Simar Ka. After the shocking twist of her character Roli being married to the protagonist Prem, the TRP and drama both have undergone a huge change. Thrilled that her show is doing well, Avika talks about child marriage, leading the show and upcoming twists. Read on.
Sasuraal Simar Ka really shocked the audiences with the twist of Roli being married off to Prem instead of Simar. No wonder it got a boost in TRPs with this interesting drama. What was your reaction when you learnt of this twist? This twist was a shock not only for the audiences but to everyone on the show too. I was shocked when I heard that we would be shooting such a scene as I had already shot the part when Simar gets married to Prem. Few days later, the production team told me that they have changed the story and now Roli will be married to Prem instead. It was a big deal and it could have gone either way. I am glad the audiences accepted this dramatic change in the story. As for TRPs, well I don't focus on them so I don't worry about them. But I am told they did rise and I am happy about it as they do matter. More and more people are now watching Sasuraal Simar Ka. What kind of reaction have you been getting from people? Most of them who meet me, like when I went to my cousin's house in Nasik, people who met me wanted to know what will happen to Roli now. What will she do next? They were shocked that how could this happen. I guess most people expected Simar to come to the mandap in the end but she doesn't so it was astonishing and totally unexpected. I tell them I don't know and will do what the writers want me to. There were reports that as Roli is married to Prem, now you have become the lead of the show instead of Simar aka Dipika. Comment. Well, I don't think so. The story of Sasuraal Simar Ka is about two sisters and the track focuses on both sisters. In any television show, parallel stories and tracks keep the interest level of the audiences and it is not just the protagonists who get the prominence always. This is a team work and we all get importance in the show. You seem to be setting a trend of underage marriages on television. How old is Roli? Roli is 18 years old, so there is no case of underage marriage [laughs]. I am not setting any trend. In Balika Vadhu, it was the core topic of the show but that is not the case here. Both shows have totally different topics and characters. Perhaps no one was talking of Roli's marriage and she got married, so this topic has come up. Would you say that child actors over shadow their older counterparts as you were more popular as the current Anandi aka Pratyusha and here too you got married to the hero? It wouldn't be fair to say so. If the older counterparts act well and connect with the audiences then the show and character both work. Whoever works hard, gets due results. As for Balika Vadhu, it is doing well now so I think their hard work has paid off.

Painting the town maroon
Bollywood actresses Hema Malini and Esha Deol raised the mercury on the third day of the ongoing Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) Winter/Festive 2011 when the mother-daughter duo strutted down the ramp in creations designed by Shyamal and Bhumika. While Hema was wearing a maroon saree with part velvet, part brocade layers, daughter Esha sported a highly-embellished lehenga choli of the same colour. “I have never worn such a lovely saree. It looks like Kanjivaram but it’s lighter with hand woven brocade work. The idea was to canvas the golden era,” Hema, 62, told reporters after the show. The designers were elated to have the mother-daughter duo for the show. “It’s amazing to have Esha and Hemaji here to showcase the line. Esha is wearing a silk velvet ghagra and it has heavy zardosi hand embroidery. We specialise in hand embroidery, that’s what Shyamal and Bhumika are known for. We have done lots of hand works with contrasting colours; that’s our forte,” Bhumika said. The collection was inspired by the age-old jamaas, chogaas, peshwas, achkans and kaidar lehengas of the 17th century. The lines include some streamline sherwanee jackets teamed with gorgeous skirts sensuous cholas worn over avant grade Kalidaar lehengaas, floor sweeping anarkalees, elongated yokes and kurtis. Jewel-toned colours like ruby wine, sunlight cream, nile blue, honey gold, aurora red, burnt orange, pale gold, lilac rose, peacock green were predominant in the collection. — IANS |

"Well, Mahie Gill is a rebellious biwi in the film and we needed a catchy theme song for her. Hence came the idea to bring out our version of Jugni, a popular Punjabi folk song. Unic(orn) fantasy
Actor Colin Farrell says he would not mind playing a unicorn in a film.
The Irish actor currently stars as vampire Jerry in a remake of classic 80s movie Fright Night. He says such creatures appeal to people because of the mixture of "mythical" with human form. Farrell said he "wouldn't mind" playing the one-horned fantasy creature. There's something very sensual about the vampire. They're very powerful, they're timeless, and the act of the bite, whatever, is incredibly erotic. So there are a lot of reasons why people are fascinated by them, and they're in human form," says Farrell. "So it's an interesting mix of the mythical and the mystical within the human form. It doesn't seem like too far a reach, like a unicorn. I wouldn't mind being a unicorn, but it seems like it's more possible for me to be a vampire somehow," he added.
