kalka gangrape case
Panchkula, August 20 In order to save the victim’s marriage, the court has issued summons at the address of the victim’s parents in Rajpura. During the last hearing, the victim’s parents had appeared before the court and had requested the court not to summon their daughter since she was now married and her husband and in-laws were not aware of her traumatic past. The victim’s parents had told the court that though they wanted the accused to be punished, but at the same time, they did not want to disrupt her happy married life. The victim’s statement is crucial for the prosecution, as the three key witnesses have already turned hostile against the last accused in the case. Earlier, the victim and her parents had given a statement against the three accused, who were awarded 10-year imprisonment, but were not coming forward to record their statements against the fourth accused. The police had recently nabbed Sushil Kumar, alias Diwan, and his trial was running separately. The court had awarded 10-year imprisonment to the accused, Vikram Chaudhary, Madan Yadav and Sumit, all residents of Uttar Pradesh. On the night of January 9, 2010, the accused allegedly abducted the victim from the Kalka police post and gangraped her in a car. The police spotted the car when it was crossing the Parwanoo barrier. Accompanied by a team of the Himachal police, the Panchkula police nabbed the accused when their car met with an accident near Dharampur. |

graft case
Chandigarh, August 20 Meanwhile in connection with the Arms Act case, Ghirra filed a bail application in which the court had issued notice to the UT police to file their reply. The Chandigarh district court had already granted bail to Ghirra in connection with the Excise Act case. In connection with the graft case, the CBI had opposed the bail application of Ghirra stating that if the court granted regular bail to her, there were chances that she could tamper with evidence. The CBI, in its reply had stated that allegations against Ghirra were serious in nature and bail to the accused at this stage of investigation would hamper the probe. In her bail plea in the graft case, Ghirra, presently lodged in Burail jail, stated that she had filed her income tax return from 2000, in which she had mentioned her jewellery, cash and property. She added that the CBI failed to recover any illegal property document from her Sector 15 residence. She pleaded that she had cooperated with the investigating agency. |

UHBVN told to pay Rs 20,000 to farmer
Panchkula, August 20 The forum comprising president Ashok Kumar Jain and its members Sarita Jain and SP Singh also directed the UHBVN to restore the electricity connection to the complainant. Yaseen, a farmer from Sultanpur village, in his application had pleaded with the forum that during July 2007 the electricity meter installed on his tubewell was burnt following which he had applied for a new meter. While no such meter was installed he deposited Rs 13,132 against a bill issued on an average basis to him on August 21 last year, stated Yaseen. On the other hand the UHBVN officials issued him a letter alleging that he was found stealing electricity and imposed a penalty of Rs 33,700 and Rs 40,000 on account of compounding fee. The forum, however, observed that instead of replacing the meter of the complainant, it appeared that some case of theft of electricity was foisted upon the farmer. A careful perusal of the documents clearly showed that the SDO concerned issued meter change orders on July 14, 2007, directing the junior engineer to change the meter, but the orders so issued were never complied with leaving the hapless farmer in lurch. Further, the forum in its order stated that in the present case no opportunity of hearing was granted to the accused before imposing the penalty of Rs 33,700 upon him. Even no notice, as required by the law, was ever served upon the complainant before imposing the penalty of the assessment, said the forum. |
