Young & Committed
A frivolous band of youngsters with the attention span of a goldfish — that's what teenagers keep hearing about themselves. And if the teenager happens to be a girl, there's an additional rider of vanity. Cut to another picture. The 'Girls Up' campaign by the United Nations Foundation is helping teens empower teens. It's a campaign for the girls by the girls. A girl from California, who's part of this campaign, writes: "I'm 16 years old. She's 14. My name is Karina. Her name is Massa. I live in Carpinteria, California. She lives in Todee, Liberia. We're half a world away and our lives are dramatically different…candles cost money and it is a luxury for Massa to burn them for studying…I quickly realised that the situation for Massa and other girls living in developing countries isn't as simple as just lack of candles; it's many complications that add on to each other. Disease, poverty, violence, sexual abuse, hunger, illiteracy, child marriage-it's all interconnected." This is a far cry from the stereotype of a woolly-headed teenager. Between these two contrasting images, which one is closer to reality? We do a quick check with youngsters from Ludhiana. Twenty-year-old Nagma Sahi loves to chip in for her friend's NGO. She donates money and volunteers time, just as her acquaintance Tanvi Kharbanda celebrates her birthday by donating gifts to children at orphanages. "It's wrong to think that teenagers are hedged in by the three-point agenda of I, my and mine and that they have no inclination to go beyond it," says Manasavi Madaan, a student of interior design. She believes that charity comes naturally to some people, irrespective of their age. "We need to have a heart to share our time and money with the less privileged. And not all have it," says Martha, a fashion design student at INIFD in Ludhiana. "The stereotype of youngsters as a hedonistic group of people is unfair. I understand that the young brigade likes to have fun. We also love our list of must-have things. But who is not materialistically driven? Aren't our seniors - our parents and teachers - influenced by the consumer culture?" quips 19-year-old Preeti Singh. She adds, "We, youngsters, may lack the experience that comes with years, but our heartstrings are intact and our emotional quotient is just fine." |

Inside the COURTROOM!
Mona That courtroom drama can be very interesting is a fact that has been proved in various movies, but a journey though files, case studies or pictures will be so fascinating did not cross our mind! High Court Museum, Chandigarh, gives a peep into our history in its own unique way. From majestic buildings in green lawns at Lahore to snow-covered Peter Hoff at Shimla and Le Corbusier's present address, the first section tells the journey of the High Court through its buildings. A mock courtroom that has all the antique chairs, typewriters, wooden daters, wall clock, wooden ink soaker, table call bell and a heater from Switzerland, recreates the old era. So used to computers and Internet today, the old nibs, pencil sharpeners, ink pots and wooden ink soaker make one realise how cumbersome writing was not so long ago! Everything from brass ink stands, dip pens, nibs, ink bottles and ink tablets, which are seen very less nowadays, are preserved here. The case properties, including trophies and arms, used in crime, have another story to tell. Indian freedom struggle is evident in 14 tomes of Bhagat Singh's trial in Hindi, English and Urdu. Hand-written judgments to curious witness records, the museum narrates a story that an ordinary person is not aware of! Nathu Ram Godse's handcuffs, old fire-extinguisher (stands right next to a brand new), the famed Chandigarh map manhole cover… there are many interesting objects spread across the museum. Le Corbusier's plans, sketches and pictures find a proud place here. As does the pictures and names of former judges. Two columns have beautiful pictures from our constitution — image of Natraja, Akbar in his court from the Muslim period, scenes from Himalayas to the desert —offer interesting facts about our country. All in all, it's interesting to see how much common life and its culture gets reflected in this High Court Museum! (Open on all days from 10 am to 5 pm) mona@tribunemail.com |

Freida's loyalty
Freida Pinto has a special place for fashion house Chanel because they believed in her when she had not become so famous. The 26-year-old says Chanel was the only company to loan her clothes for red carpet events when she was beginning her career.
"I tell you why I like Chanel so much, when I started off no one wanted to give me clothes to wear. Absolutely no one. All the labels said, 'Who is she?'," she said. "Modelling was not completely satisfying. But Chanel believed in me from the very beginning. For the very first red carpet I did at the Toronto Film Festival in 2008, they dressed me up in their very current season collection. It's a massive brand, why would they invest in someone who is nobody," she said. — IANS

Siblings, forever
The concept of celebration might have changed over the years, but Raksha Bandhan, perhaps, is the only festival that reminds us of traditional ties.
Contemporary designs or chips could have taken over the delicate weaves, but to our surprise rakhis have retained their traditional look. What's more, these are coming in thalis, betel leaves (pan ka patta) and wooden boxes lined with velvet and gotta! Looks like it's the only trend that has witnessed a reverse swing over the years — right from traditional boxes to conventional thalis to bamboo tokris you can even pick designer rakhis embellished with pearls and stones for dear brother. "You can also pick rakhis that come with the historical significance of the festival," says Yoginder Kumar from Jewels-11. "Although at first it looks like a rakhi in a greeting card, there is more to it than meets the eye. The outer cover is more than just a holder for the rakhi; it spells out the importance of the festival on a silk paper. A careful glance and you realise that the rakhi is designed to resemble the traditional pothi or sacred texts," he adds. You even have maulis or strings glued on plain sheets with Sanskrit shlokas on it. Says Rohit Gawri from Peshwari in Sector-19, "Though we cannot deny that there is an advent of cartoon rakhis, but those are for children; for the adults we have rakhis in pan patta that includes everything — right from tikka to chawal, roli and sweets."

ROYAL palate
Bringing the taste and flavour from the land of Awadh, Hotel Chandigarh Ashok presents the Awadhi Food Festival. With no real 'royal' food joint in Chandigarh, the festival offers everything Lucknawi delicacy is all about. Fresh from the chefs' innovation, the dishes include famous galouti kebab, lagan ka murgh, ulta tawa prantha, mirch ka halwa, shahi tookra, sheermal, glafi kulcha and of course the indispensable kakori kebabs.
Elaborating on the need to promote authentic food in Chandigarh, Dinesh C Jha, general manager of the hotel, says, "It's important to bring the regional food to the forefront than just have international cuisines on the menu." With plans to introduce healthy food as part of the festival, chef Halim has taken the trouble to improvise his experience from Lucknow and bring the gourmet delights to Chandigarh. Being a specialist in the cuisine, the chef brings his culinary skills for residents. For the Punjabis who generally love to add that dash of spices, the mild Awadhi food might not find many takers. That's not true; I have previous experience in handling parties for various Punjabis and can be certain that Awadhi food will end up creating a fan-following." Halim adds. So, are you ready for the royal taste of
Awadh?
From the chef's kitchen

Happy go lucky
Jacqueline Fernandes, who impressed people with her performance in Murder 2, has a number of offers. She is happy with the way her career is going, and has been thinking positively about her future in Bollywood. We talk to her about the success of Isequels, learning Hindi and more…
Success story
I'm still receiving SMSes for my performance in the movie. I am happy that I have been able to showcase my ability as an actress. Till today, I am learning how much people liked my role in the film, and I am happy that finally, I have proved my acting ability too. I've got a lot of offers after Murder 2, but most of the scripts read similar. I'm shooting for a few films, and waiting for them to finish before I sign something new. I want to do something different in each of film. I don't want to be repetitive. Second take
(Laughs) I was thinking on the same lines. It's a coincidence that I have been offered several roles for sequels. After Murder 2, I'm also doing Housefull 2. Then, there is Raaz 3 and Total Dhamaal. So, until 2012, I'm booked with sequels. Raaz 3 is totally different from what I've done previously, and Total Dhamaal is an out-and-out comedy. Funny memories
When I first came to India, I had didn't know the language. I was once traveling by a cab, and the driver was murmuring something, which I didn't understand at all. I later learnt that he was talking about the traffic situation. To sound as if I understood what he was saying, I said Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. He looked at me in surprise, and didn't say anything afterwards. I think about that and laugh even now. I have started learning Hindi, as my career demands that I know the language. I have told my staff to communicate with me only in Hindi, so that I pick up the language and get my accent right as well. —HRM

"I really hope everyone back in England keep themselves as well as their families safe. Stay low for a while, or if u want to fight back, do it safely after all it is your prerogative...," he said. Urging people to stop being violent, Akshay said: "I understand why people are angry but in this day and age how do humans still react the same way cave men once did." "Good old England, the very country so many rely on, is being battered by its own infuriated youngsters who have been threatened & abused the very city that has taken care of them!"

No kidding about acting
Actress Jessica Alba, who is expecting a second child with husband Cash Warren, says she does not want her children to become child stars in Hollywood. The 30-year-old actress said she will ban her daughter Honor Marie, three, and future children from pursuing acting career, until after they have completed college.
Alba made her film debut in the flick Camp Nowhere aged 13 while Warren is a producer but she does not want her children to follow her footsteps. "I was a child actor and it worked for me, given the circumstances I was in, but I'm lucky enough to give my daughter and my second baby a completely different life that I never had the opportunity to have.” "When they're done with college, if they want to get into the arts, that's fine. The 37-year-old beauty insists she doesn't shy away from carbohydrates like her contemporaries but at the same time makes sure her diet is the healthy kind. People are always surprised when I eat bread in restaurants! I mostly stick to wholemeal, though. When in doubt, go dark with the food - so I stay away from white pasta, white rice and white bread and that keeps things simple for me," she said. Besides a healthy diet, Mendes said she maintains her stunning figure with lots of exercise. "I hit the gym three to four times a week to do light weights- which target my whole body. — PTI

Body secret
Mohd Nazim aka Ahem from Saath Nibhaana Saathiya on Star Plus is the handsome hunk with a great body. We get the actor to reveal his fitness secrets for his fans. Do you prefer working out in the gym or any other form of exercise and why? I enjoy working out in the gym. I make sure to hit the gym at least four or five days a week. I have a personal trainer who has planned an exercise regime according to my body type. What is your fitness regime? My trainer makes sure that I have a complete workout, including chest, shoulders, legs and abs. After this workout I also do some cardio exercises. The body requires at least two days of rest and so I don't workout at all on the days that I take a break from the gym. Have you always been health conscious or you have become one after entering the industry? I have been working out since my college days but have become very particular about it only recently. My profession demands that I maintain a good body but even if I was not into acting, I would have been equally passionate about fitness. What foods do you include in your diet and what do you avoid? I avoid junk food which includes burgers, pizzas and noodles. I have a lot of fruits and salads and other low-fat food. I also make sure that I consume a lot of water throughout the day. Which are your problem areas and how did you work on them? Touchwood, I have never had any major problem areas. I have never had much trouble maintaing a healthy body and normal weight. What are the exercises that you will recommend to fans? It is difficult for working professionals to find time to workout at the gym, so if you can't manage then at least try jogging or walking. Both these exercises are good for the body and help to lose weight. It has worked for me and I would like to recommend it to fans too. —HRM
