Housing projects in Punjab hamper laying of pipes

The acquisition of 66 acres by the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) in Punjab to set up phase VII and VIII of the Kajauli waterworks has hit a roadblock as human settlements are coming in the way of the proposed alignment of the pipelines, resulting in further delay in the acquisition of land for the vital project to augment water supply to Chandigarh.

Missing Mohali resident back
Mohali, August 9
Sector-70 resident Amit Sachdeva, who went missing on July 28, resurfaced today in a dramatic manner. He had been handling data software of multinational companies. Matour police station SHO Tarlochan Singh said Amit, on being questioned, said he had gone on his own. He said after parking his Alto car (PB65H-2150) at Sector 34, he went to Delhi, Kanpur and Varanasi.

Student bodies vie for attention ahead of campus polls

Despite almost three weeks to go for Panjab University student elections, student organisations are already on the job to hog limelight by creating disturbances. In the latest incident today, ABVP, Chandigarh organising secretary Dinesh Chauhan was arrested as a preventive measure under Sections 107 & 111 of the CrPC when he tried to disrupt classes. However, he was bailed out later.

In order to speed up the rape-on-wheels case, which has been pending for nine years, a Chandigarh district court issued directions to the Chandigarh Police today, asking it to produce only those witnesses who, according to the prosecution, were important for recording of statements.

Priest found dead in room
Panchkula, August 9
A priest of a Shiv temple in Bhareli village, Barwala, was found dead in his room this morning. The priest, identified as 90-year-old Sheetal Giri, was doing “Khari Tapsaya” (performing religious acts by standing) from the past one month, along with another priest.

2 ITBP constables held for assault
Chandigarh, August 9
The police today arrested two ITBP constables, a driver and a conductor of a school bus for wards of ITBP personnel, for allegedly thrashing a youth, identified as Jaswinder, who entered the bus in Sector 32.
