Revise minimum wages: Labour unions
Dehradun, August 8 The AITUC demanded that the Uttarakhand Minimum Wages Advisory Board, which was reconstituted on June 23 this year, should soon decide on the new revised minimum wages by holding its meetings before the code of conduct in view of the coming Assembly election in the state. The unions also submitted a memorandum to Assistant Labour Commissioner NC Kulashru, who assured them of sending their messages to the Commissioner, Labour, recommending their assertions. He said, “The board will remain unaffected by the code of conduct or the process of the Assembly election and continue to engage in the work of framing the minimum wages. Many states have already implemented it. I am certain that in our state too, the minimum wages for labour will be increased in wake of increased inflation.” Addressing the issue of labours of tea-gardens, general secretary Ashok Sharma said, “The women working at tea gardens are the worst sufferers as they have been getting mere Rs 2,200 since 2002. The issue of revision of their wages has been pending since 2007. He demanded the minimum wages of Rs 10,000 along with dearness allowance and other allowances”. Champa, the woman leader of tea garden workers, also said they worked from 8 am to 5 pm in tea gardens. The state government had been turning deaf ears to their repeated demands for increased wages. Ram Kumar Bahuguna, general secretary, Hotel Workers Union, said their wages which were earlier fixed in 2005 got due for revision in 2010, but that did not happen till date. He demanded the minimum wages of Rs 7,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000 for those working in dhaba, hotels and restaurants and an increment of 3 per cent annually. Sunil Kumar, Secretary, Musoorie School and College Employees Union, said the revision of the minimum wages in 2005 was riddled with many discrepancies which left much to be desired for the unorganised labour class. He drew attention towards English medium schools operating in Mussoorie, saying, “The state government which earns nothing from the government schools gives salaries to their staff as per the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations while the English medium schools, which earn crores, do not give even the minimum wages to its employees.” He demanded Rs 10,000 monthly salary for the school employees, and bonus to those working in government or private education institutions with 10 per cent annual increase. |
