Revise minimum wages: Labour unions
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, August 8
Labour unions of tea gardens, hotel workers and Mussoorie public schools and colleges protested here today under the banner of the All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) demanding re-assessment of the minimum wages.

The AITUC demanded that the Uttarakhand Minimum Wages Advisory Board, which was reconstituted on June 23 this year, should soon decide on the new revised minimum wages by holding its meetings before the code of conduct in view of the coming Assembly election in the state.

The unions also submitted a memorandum to Assistant Labour Commissioner NC Kulashru, who assured them of sending their messages to the Commissioner, Labour, recommending their assertions.

He said, “The board will remain unaffected by the code of conduct or the process of the Assembly election and continue to engage in the work of framing the minimum wages. Many states have already implemented it. I am certain that in our state too, the minimum wages for labour will be increased in wake of increased inflation.”

Addressing the issue of labours of tea-gardens, general secretary Ashok Sharma said, “The women working at tea gardens are the worst sufferers as they have been getting mere Rs 2,200 since 2002. The issue of revision of their wages has been pending since 2007. He demanded the minimum wages of Rs 10,000 along with dearness allowance and other allowances”.

Champa, the woman leader of tea garden workers, also said they worked from 8 am to 5 pm in tea gardens. The state government had been turning deaf ears to their repeated demands for increased wages.

Ram Kumar Bahuguna, general secretary, Hotel Workers Union, said their wages which were earlier fixed in 2005 got due for revision in 2010, but that did not happen till date. He demanded the minimum wages of Rs 7,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000 for those working in dhaba, hotels and restaurants and an increment of 3 per cent annually.

Sunil Kumar, Secretary, Musoorie School and College Employees Union, said the revision of the minimum wages in 2005 was riddled with many discrepancies which left much to be desired for the unorganised labour class.

He drew attention towards English medium schools operating in Mussoorie, saying, “The state government which earns nothing from the government schools gives salaries to their staff as per the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations while the English medium schools, which earn crores, do not give even the minimum wages to its employees.”

He demanded Rs 10,000 monthly salary for the school employees, and bonus to those working in government or private education institutions with 10 per cent annual increase.

Dehradun, August 8
The local police will introduce a new route plan for Vikrams from August 17. It has also given the proposed plan to the Vikram Union and asked it to suggest changes, if any, within three days.

However, this decision has not gone down well with Vikram owners. Satish Sharma, president of the Centre Vikram Union, said: “We are not happy with the plan as it will be inconvenient for us as well as commuters.”

The police wants to reduce the number of Vikrams plying in the city. For this, it has proposed a plan to shorten their routes in the congested areas of the city. “We also held a meeting with Virkamwallahs in this regard today. They have been asked to reply within three days on the plan in which some changes have been made to the existing 10 routes. From August 17, a new plan will be introduced,” said SP (Traffic) Ajay Joshi.

“Recently, we had also issued challans to some Vikram drivers for using fake number plates. They were running two to three Vikrams on the basis of the documents of one vehicle. Cases has also been registered against some of them,” the SP added.

The president of the Centre Vikram Union said he would discuss the plan with the chiefs of other unions.

Meanwhile, the SP said after introducing the plan for Vikrams, they would make a similar plan for city buses.
