Bank staff go on strike
Patiala, August 5 Numerous bank employees gathered and took out a protest march and protested against the government. Addressing the striking employees, the senior vice-president, All-India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC), Amar Singh, said that the strike was called against the government policies of attack on public sector banks and to dilute its equity to hand over the public sector banks to the private sector. “The government wants to place huge resources at the disposal of the multi-nationals and also the industrial houses, knowing very well that their objectives are to make super profits and not to use these resources for the welfare of common people of the country”, he stated. Bank employees are agitated against the government proposal to bring Banking Laws Amendment Bill 2011 vide, which the government wants individual investors, corporate, FDI’s to invest more than 5 per cent of the capital in private banks and to increase ceiling on voting rights from 1 to 10 per cent in Public Sector Banks. Amar Singh further warned that if the government does not mete out their demands, the agitation would be further intensified. |

46.5 pc infants die of malnutrition: Survey
Patiala, August 5 Dr Paramjeet Kaur while addressing students said the workshop aimed at educating women about the benefits and healthy ways of breast feeding. She said according to a survey conducted by the World Health Organisation, about 46.5 per cent of infants died because of malnutrition. |

Shopkeepers nab chain snatcher
Ambala, August 5 According to police sources, the accused originally belonged to Uttar Pradesh and was caught red-handed by the Gandhi Nagar market shopkeepers after he snatched a gold chain along with a locket from the neck of Ridam, a resident of Yamunanagar. Ridam was travelling along with her two friends in a three-wheeler from Mahesh Nagar to Sadar Bazar in which the youth was also sitting on the front seat. According to the SHO, Sadar police station, when auto carrying local passengers reached near Gudgudia drain on Jagadhari road, the youth snatched the chain and jumped out of the moving three-wheeler and ran towards Gandhi Market. The driver of the three-wheeler applied brakes immediately, when the victim along with her friends raised an alarm. The shopkeepers of Gandhi Market caught the youth immediately and informed the police. The youth was handed over to Sadar police along with the gold chain and locket. Nearly a dozen cases of chain snatching have been reported to police stations in the city in the past three weeks. |

Manual attendance to be history
Ambala, August 5 According to sources in the education department, the Haryana government has decided to install biometric system in the school that has an online record of logging in teachers. Now, teachers will have to mark attendance through the biometric system. Till now, attendance was marked manually in a register. According to the state education department, biometric machines will be installed in schools from September 1 this year. There is a proposal to install biometric machines in nearly 2,300 schools in the first phase under the Centrally sponsored scheme for information and communication technology. |

Man electrocuted
Kharar, August 5 The deceased was identified as Nandu, a resident of Bangla Basti, Mundi, Kharar. However, the police has registered a case against the official of PSPCL on the complaint of the deceased’s brothe,r Raju. According to the police, the incident took place around 9.30 am when Nandu was going towards his shop when he saw an electric wire that was lying on the road. After mistaking the wire to be a piece of scrap, Nandu touched the cable resulting in his electrocution. The body of the deceased will be handed over to the family after conducting a post-mortem examination tomorrow, the police added. A police official stated that a case had been registered on the complaint of the deceased’s brother. |
Husband convicted of killing wife
Panchkula, August 5 Additional district and sessions judge Subhas Mahela convicted Kalka resident Manish Dutta for killing his wife Manisha Dutta. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced on Monday. The court acquitted father-in-law Prakash Dutta, mother-in-law Santosh Dutta, Sister-in-law Anjali Dutta and brother-in-law Jitender Dutta. Earlier, the Kalka police had registered a case of dowry death on October 2010 but after receiving the medical report the police later converted it into a murder case. The police said that deceased Manisha, who was found dead hanging from a ceiling fan in her house, was actually murdered before hanging. The post-mortem report of the deceased had also confirmed that the death occurred due to strangulation. The police said that after murdering Manisha, the accused had hung her from the ceiling fan to show that it was a case of suicide. The police said that Manisha’s husband Manish was having an illicit relation with his younger sister-in-law. The deceased had seen the two in a compromising situation. Thereafter Manish had murdered Manisha. |

Illegal mining continues, 76 cases registered
Panchkula, August 5 In fact after the ban on mining in the rivers of the district, the prices of these items had shot up in the area and in order to cash in on the gap between demand and supply, the unscrupulous elements have been digging up the riverbed in a big way. The prices of 300 cubic feet of sand and gravel have doubled to Rs 3,200 and Rs 10,000, respectively. Last year, these were available for Rs 1,600 and Rs 4,800 only. Today, the district mining officer at a meeting with deputy commissioner Ashima Brar informed that as many as 76 cases of illegal mining had been registered in the district during the previous month and imposed a penalty of Rs. 6,15,400 on the violators. These included 51 cases in Panchkula only. The remaining 25 cases were registered in Kalka. FIR had also been registered in three cases, he said. The Deputy Commissioner said that a number of complaints had been received regarding illegal mining especially in some areas of Pinjore Block. She directed the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Pinjore, to take action and register FIRs against the violators. She also asked the raiding parties of the departments concerned that photography and video recording of illegal mining should also be done so that FIR could be registered against the violators on the basis of these evidences. |

Mohali, August 5 The police official said they got the information that three persons who were dressed in police uniform were collecting money from door-to-door in Sector 70. A police team raided the place and arrested them. Zirakpur, August 5 The investigating officer stated in his complaint that Bhim Sen said he owned a property dealer shop near Oriental Bank of Commerce in Zirakpur. Sen alleged that he got the information about theft in the morning and suspected that Sampuran Singh had stolen goods worth lakhs after breaking the locks of his shop late last night. He claimed that the accused decamped with 3 ACs, 1 TV, 1 fridge, 3 LCDs, 2 printers, 3 CCTV cameras and cash Rs 2.50 lakh. Bhim alleged that he had submitted a complaint against Bhura in some other case at the Panchkula police station. A case has been registered. |

2 men drugged, robbed
Chandigarh, August 5 The police suspected that they were drugged when the bus stopped at a ‘dhaba’ in Pipli of in Kurukshetra district and robbed. They were identified as Sukhanand and Tarachand of Chandpur in Palampur tehsil of Kangra district. The police said they boarded the bus from Delhi the previous night and were on way to their native place. Investigations revealed that another person was accompanying them, but he got down at Ambala. All their belongings, including luggage, wallets and wrist watches, were missing. Tarachand was still unconscious. He was admitted to the GMSH at Sector 16. A DDR was lodged at the Sector-36 police station. |

96 junior golfers to tee off today
Chandigarh, August 5 This will be the second year of the initiative taken by the Chandigarh Golf Association to tap junior talent in the region. The two-day tournament will be held on a stroke-play basis. A special Category E has been created for children in the age-group of five to seven years. Children in the A, B, C and D categories will play 36 holes, while the in Category E, they will play only 18 holes. There will be separate prizes for girls and boys in each category. Trophies will be distributed among winners and runners-up in each category and participation certificates will be awarded to all players. For the convenience of participating players, the CGA has created a separate section on its website www.chandigarhgolfassociation.com for the draw, results and merit list. All participants will be given Callaway’s golf balls and T-shirts. A dress code is to be adhered to by participants during the tournament. Parents will be allowed in the spectator gallery of the course at a minimum distance of 50 yards from the playing group. Players holding high ranking in the Indian Golf Union such as Anant Singh Ahlawat, Tavleen Batra, Harsh Gangwar, Jairaj Sandhu, Jaiveer Sandhu, Digraj Gill, Aadil Bedi and Vasundhara Thiara will rub shoulders with the upcoming juniors.
