New dist sans adequate offices
Fazilka, August 1 Deputy Commissioner Dr Basant Garg, while assuming the charge, occupied the SDM’s office in the Mini-secretariat. As a result, SDM Charandev Singh Mann shifted his office to the Kisan Rest House in the Market Committee office complex. Likewise, SSP Rajinder Kumar Sharda was initially supposed to take the newly constructed Police Suvidha Kendra office in the city police station complex. Notably, the Suvidha Kendra office has been silently operational without any formal inauguration for the past few months. However, it was learnt that the newly-built hostel of the Government Girls Senior Secondary School was occupied for the SSP's office late in the afternoon today. The SP (H) designate Balbir Singh too has assumed charge but he is in search of an office to begin work. Some other junior officials in the police department have also been posted in the newly created Fazilka district. They appear to be in a dilemma regarding office space. Fazilka MLA and Cabinet minister Surjit Kumar Jyani, when confronted with the problem, said it would take two years to meet the essential requirements. Charandev Singh Mann, SDM, Fazilka, who had been transferred to Fazilka a few days before the elevation of Fazilka as district, has been given the additional charge of Additional Deputy Commissioner (General and Development). Since his transfer, he has been living in the PWD rest-house. The DC is temporarily staying at the canal rest- house while the SSP is residing at the Border Security Force (BSF) rest-house. On the other hand, elated with the newly-acquired status, the residents of the town are eagerly awaiting postings of other district-level officials at Fazilka so that their official work gets carried out here. Deputy Commissioner Dr Basant Garg has already said that the process of building up of the required infrastructure has been initiated and efforts would be made to put things in place at the earliest. |

Traffic police lack basic facilities in Mansa
Mansa, August 1 An accident that took place on Saturday night near Bhainibagha village left the commuters fuming as the cops on duty failed to install reflectors or use torch-lights to alert fast moving vehicles on the Bathinda-Mansa road. A motorbike and truck collided on the road wherein two youngsters lost their lives. The two boys, identified as Chamkaur Singh and Gurpreet Singh were from Burj Dhillwan village of Mansa and were on way to their village after shopping in a market at Mansa. Their bike collided with an oil tanker and both lost their lives in the accident. The bodies of the youth remained lying on the road for more than an hour due to lack of cranes to remove vehicles meeting with accidents. Many drivers nearly rammed their vehicles into the stranded vehicles as there was no adequate arrangement for lighting at the accident site. “I failed to spot vehicles involved in the accident as it was pitch dark on the road and people had kept bushes and tree branches around the bodies and the vehicles involved,” said a software engineer Bhupinder Singh. “My car was about to hit the bushes when I applied brakes abruptly,” Bhupinder said. He was driving towards Bathinda from Chandigarh along with his family members. He alleged that the cops standing nearby rebuked him for not applying brakes in time. “They shouted at me and even abused me despite the fact that there were no reflectors, torches or flood-lights near accident site,” he alleged. A few other commuters passing through the stretch too expressed similar views and said there should have been adequate lighting and reflectors. At least vehicles should have been signalled using the torch-lights so that they could reduce their speed. In-charge of highway patrolling, Mansa, ASI Surjit Raj admitted problems faced by the commuters during the time of accidents, especially at night. “We only ferry the injured to the nearby hospital but we are not provided with cranes or reflectors,” he said. Mansa SSP Parmar when contacted said he would look into the matter and take action against those who insulted or abused the commuters. Rising cases of mishaps in dist

NCC R&V squadron may function from Sept
Ghudda (Bathinda), August 1 It would prepare cadets for the national and international competitions thereby giving an impetus to the NCC activities in Punjab. While the Central Government would provide staff for the army and administrative services, the Punjab government will employ civilian staff. Talking to TNS today, NCC Ludhiana group commander Col GPS Sawhney said that an officer of the rank of either a Major or Lieutenant Colonel will spearhead the academy. "The procedure of recruiting people has started. Similarly, the Punjab government too has started recruiting the required staff," he said. Col Sawhney added that the Army officers will include an officer, a JCO and 11 other staff members. Of these, seven would be deputed to look after the horses. Similarly, nine people would be recruited as part of the civilian staff of which two (saddler and farrier) would be deputed for horse care. The Ministry of Defence would be sending a batch of 12 or 13 horses that would be used to train the NCC cadets. Earlier, the academy was to be commissioned by August 15 — a deadline that is now expected to be pushed to the first week of September. "As there is no Army formation nearby, we have come up with residential quarters for all the 13 Army personnel. The civilian staff would be hired from Bathinda and nearby areas," Sawhney added. R&V squadron is a part of the larger project coming up in the state to train NCC cadets. Also, with the clearance of the Ministry of Defence, NCC academies are under construction for boys at Ropar and for girls at Malout. aiming right

Jet suction machines to clear choked sewerage system
Bathinda, August 1 Going through the harrowing experiences of the past and taking action after a number of protests lodged by city residents in this regard, the BMC has woken from deep slumber and finally taken this extreme step that would cost about Rs 50 lakhs. Resolving the problem of water accumulation is the biggest challenge before the BMC, as after every spell of rain, the city witnesses a flood-like situation and most of the roads remain waterlogged. With these machines beginning to function, the Bathinda Municipal Corporation authorities claimed that though the jet-suction machines would take some time to make the sewerage system fully functional, yet the years-old problem was expected to be resolved. The BMC has taken up the project as their main agenda for the monsoon season as waterlogging in the city had reportedly started irking the ruling Badal family, as they were receiving a number of complaints in this regard. Uma Shankar Gupta, BMC Commissioner, said, "We are committed to provide better services to the residents. To make the drainage system run at its full capacity during the rainy season, the officials of the Sewerage Department were already put on the job of de-silting the sewerage and now the jet-suction machines will improve the situation." "Three jet-suction machines, which have been hired from a Delhi-based company will clear the choked sewerage system at an estimated cost of Rs 50 lakh. In the initial phase, one-and-a-half-km of the main sewerage line will be cleared," he said. "The payment will be made only after the sewerage system becomes functional and the company officials give us the video CD of the totally clean barrel," said Gupta. |
