Catwalk no cakewalk
Reality shows, daily soaps, talent hunt contests…do so many opportunities available make success easy for upcoming models?

Karan Chhabra
Ramp to roll: Karan Chhabra

There are movies, television serials, grooming schools, modeling agencies, talent contests, production houses, model coordinators…if nothing else works there are two dozen reality shows! The platform to show your talent has had a multiplier effect.

So did getting that big break become any easier? Or the concept itself got broken into 15 minutes of fame? How easy or difficult is it today to become a model, given the right amount of talent? But then who doesn't have the right amount of talent to be successful a bit?

It's always survival of the fittest, but if everyone is fit how many do survive? As far as local assignments are concerned, for instance local ramp shows, music videos, print shoots those you get easily. But you can't carve a name for yourself out of such work," shares Parth Gargish, an aspiring model from the city. After making it to the top ten contestants in Mr North pageant, he recently shot for a commercial for an ITC brand, but even reaching up till here wasn't easy. He adds, "You need to be good at everything. I had several dance competitions to my credit, had to gym a lot as you need to have a flexible lean physique. So far I must have been to as many as 15 to 20 auditions."
Amanpreet Wahi
MAKING it BIG: Amanpreet Wahi

Quite a feat, especially if reality shows are not an option. "I am just not interested. You have to abuse, be dramatic, temperamental and be an attention seeker."

Despite all this, who remembers even the winners of last year's reality shows let alone the participants, says Amanpreet Wahi, former Gladrags contest winner from the city, "I think especially in Mumbai, there are so many avenues, like grooming schools by the top notch names in the industry, then there are so many modeling agencies. It is easier to make it these days, because it's easier to get the right guidance. We, on the other hand, never had that easy, made mistakes, went through the trial and error method."

Also back then we had supermodels in the real sense of the term, today we hardly have any. She adds, "You can get trained easily but there's too much competition out there. Earlier we only had aspirants from the metros or the capitals cities but now everybody from smaller most towns wants to try their luck. Plus there's so much exposure." No wonder she had her fair share of the struggle. She laughs, "Before the contest Gladrags happened, if I told anyone I was model, they would be like, "That is ok but what else do you do?"

To avoid the question, Prashansa Prashar, knew exactly what to do. "I made sure that I completed my engineering degree even though I had interest in modeling right from Class XII. "Just one and a half year into the struggle, she already has a couple of Punjabi pop videos, dance reality show stint and fashion show under her belt. "I was even got two movie offers but since they were small roles I chose to opt out. I just finished doing a dance sequence for the upcoming movie Joker by Akshay Kumar.”

She opines, "Even though I have been quite lucky and things really worked out for me, I feel it is difficult to make a mark these days. I know of male models ready to actually pay up to do a ramp show. Many have gotten nowhere even after struggling for three to four years."

We are back to where we began from, getting into the arclights became easier but getting into the limelight remains just as difficult. Sums up Karan Chhabra, another upcoming model, "When there's too much competition, you need to figure out your USP. We don't have very many turbaned models from the region. My coordinator understood that and sold it around.” He recalls his stint with Blender's Pride Punjab International Fashion Week and a print shoot with Silver Mod. He adds, "I know of a guy who is all of five seven and doing well in print. He would’ve failed on ramp.”

It's a zero sum game, there's just a need to know how to turn catwalk into cakewalk.

Goodbye Amy
The tragic death of Amy Winehouse steers the debate back to the perils of a high profile life
Vasudha Gupta

The world of music has lost a talented singer to yet another "unexplained" cause of death. Found dead in her apartment in London, Amy Winehouse died all of 27.

She joined the Club 27 of people who died at this age. Despite having scared connotations, music today is being engulfed by a dark cloud of drugs, alcohol and everything else that ugly. We try to explore the causative factors, which contribute to pushing celebrities and artists over the edge.

For Sharang, a young musician from the city-based band, Harmonic Friction, it is more about the impact of culture, idols and education. "Several people from the music industry do not realise that they tend to idolise wrong people and advocate wrong habits," he says.

For a band which has been trying to popularise the right concepts in the minds of the music oriented youth, the news of Amy's demise came in as a rude shock. "When youngsters look at the music world, they also look at the dark side of it and may get attracted towards it easily. This is incorrect," he adds.

The problem is rampant not only among the musicians and artists, but also models, often found in a state of depression and lonely. Sharing her thoughts on the same, model Anchal Kumar says, "Being a part of the glamour industry, no one really looks at the pressures. Moreover security issues tend to start bothering them." Since families move away due to work commitments, the support systems tend to reduce and have their impact, she adds. "It's sad but true that in several instances, emotional turmoil emerges with psychological stress factors and lead to depression," she says.

If musicians like Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain could not deal with the evil side of music, the understanding of the pressures become important. "Singers generally experience a sense of competitition, not only with others but also with themselves. They slip into loneliness and depression," says Siddharth Mohan, a sufi singer from Chandigarh. RIP Amy Winehouse!

Mr Steady wins the race
Jasmine Singh

How many times have you heard that slow and steady wins the race? And, how many times have you dismissed the idea by saying it isn't possible in this man-eat-man world. Nevertheless, we sometimes come across cases that reconfirm our faith in the above idiom! Harysharan is one such name that stuck to this notion, and you bet, today he is reaping the dividends of it. A struggling actor, Harysharan has a bagful of work to his credit now.

An advertisement with Abhishek Bachchan, Hindi serials, a leading actor in Punjabi movie Simran and now lead role in a Bollywood film. The flight has just begun and Harysharan is all prepared for it.

"While I was pursuing masters from the Department of Indian Theatre, Panjab University, I would wonder what it takes to be a successful actor. Is it the right connections, great body and looks or something else? I figured out late, the key to success is patience," he adds.

Things moved pretty slow for Harysharan who did character roles in various movies and serials, till he decided to move to Mumbai. "We talk about development and improving infrastructure in Punjab or Chandigarh, but when it comes to entertainment industry, we have to move to Mumbai," says the actor. "The day you step into Mumbai, struggle begins. Right from finding a place to live, work, photo shoots, travel, it is a one big struggle," he shares.

Shifting to how life has changed for him, all thanks to changes in Punjabi cinema he says, "Punjabi cinema has progressed in leaps and bounds. Better scripts, directors ready to experiment with newer themes, now there is are openings for actors like us, who want a medium to showcase their talent," puts in Harysharan.

With the passion acting in tow, Haysharan still wants to pursue theatre. "Theatre is my first love and keeps me rooted."

What’s in a name

A study has shown that long before they are able to speak, infants hear words that shape their development in important ways. A University of Massachusetts Amherst psychologist Lisa Scott found that the words parents use to name objects influence the developing brain and infants' understanding of the world far earlier than researchers previously believed.

Scott's experiment has suggested that six- to nine-month-old infants are in fact using the labels they hear to form concepts of objects. She believed these early concepts form the basis for later learning.

"Our results suggest parents' differential labelling of objects leads infants to form very different concepts and to have very different brain responses than when parents label all of the objects with the same name," she said.

In this study, Scott followed 38 infants from six to nine months of age. Parents brought their babies to the laboratory once at each of these ages; in between they read a picture book to their infants according to a training schedule. At the two visits to the lab, she measured babies' ability to tell the difference between images of objects as well as their brain responses to the images.

Scott found that though none of the babies could tell the strollers apart when they were six months old, after training those who learned the different stroller names were able to distinguish between new pictures of strollers at nine months. By contrast, infants who heard the generic label for all strollers were not able to tell the new strollers apart.

Babies in the individual-label group significantly increased their ability to tell the strollers apart from 51 percent before training to 64.7 percent after, while infants who learned the generic labels showed no change, at 48 percent in both the pre- and post-test.

"These results are noteworthy because the strollers used in the discrimination task were not the same strollers as in the training book. Therefore infants took what they learned from the book and applied it to new pictures of strollers, suggesting the formation of a concept," Scott said.

The findings will appear in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience.

Robert Pattinson fears stripping scenes

Hollywood heartthrob Robert Pattinson says that he was plagued by insecurities during the filming of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn because he had to take his shirt off.

The 25-year-old British hunk said that his most anxious moment on set was when he was asked to bare his torso.

"The thing I was most nervous about was taking my shirt off. I've managed to have my shirt on the whole series.

In the book, (my character Edward is shirtless) almost every three pages. (I thought) 'How can I wear a T-shirt in the sea?" Pattinson said.

He also warned fans not to expect too much from the shirtless scenes.

"I don't want to get anyone's hopes up. I look like an inflatable frankfurter in some of those (scenes)," he said. — PTI

Olivia Wilde has said that she knows physical beauty is very important for success in Hollywood, but insists she is not just a beautiful "dunce".

The gorgeous Tron star revealed that she would love to be revered for her acting skills besides being acknowledged for her physical assets.

"Trying to fight this industry's tendency to celebrate the physical is a waste of time. So I'm happy to play that game," she says.

Leave me alone: Bipasha Basu

Bipasha Basu has taken to Twitter to express her anger over the gossip being written about her split from long-time boyfriend John Abraham.

The duo parted ways earlier this month after being together for eight years. John expressed his feelings and opened up on Simi Garewal's chat show, accepting that increasing arguments had led to their split.

But Bipasha says she has moved on and does not want to be bothered about what happened in her personal life.

"Waking upto stories about my life everyday is no fun! Making me sound tragic when I am in a happy place is not ok with me (sic)," Bipasha wrote on her twitter page.

Taking a dig on Abraham, Bipasha said she likes to keep private things private.

"I dn't need to be on a talk show 2 prove my goodness! My relationship with John Abraham is over fr good, fr reasons knwn best to d both of us.

"Wht happens between 2 ppl is supposed 2 stay between d 2 when its over, that's d dignity that I have grown up with and the respect I deserve (sic)." The 32-year-old has since been linked with actor Shahid Kapoor and Josh Hartnett, her co-star in Hollywood film Singularity. — PTI

Priyanka looks DIFFERENT

Style Mantra: Katrina Kaif

Katrina Kaif is undeniable gorgeous! She has it all: gorgeous, flawless face, beautiful body, and lovely long tresses. Her sense of style has evolved over the years. She looks good even if her clothes aren't up to the mark. Take a look.

Barbie babe

The gorgeous girl is dressed like her Barbie likeness. The fuchsia looks fabulous on her and we are glad to see her wear colour. She looks slim and shapely. The silver danglers add dazzle to her look.

Not right

She looks gorgeous, as always, but yellow blouse doesn't gel with the pleated skirt. The matching flats are too tacky and would look best with jeans. This semi-formal look doesn't work for Kat.

Lady in black

Katrina works a tiered black dress at an event. The hot pink nail paint adds colour to her boring monochromatic look. Black peep-toes complete her look and she looks so very cute and doll-like.

Dolled up

Katrina is dressed like a doll here. While the black and white dress is simple and elegant, she is too made-up and the curls are too tight. We are guessing this was at the behest of the airline she endorses.

The trek divine

Mohinder Singh (second from left) with his friends
ON ROAD: Mohinder Singh (second from left) with his friends

Churdhar Temple, devoted to Lord Shiva, is the ultimate destination for trekkers. Churdhar peak is scenic and provides us a panoramic view of the mountains. Churdhar Temple situated at 12,000 ft in Sirmour district of Himachal Pardesh and it is an 18 km on foot trek from Nauradhar to Churadhar on one side.

We began our journey at 4 am from Chandigarh on our bikes and reached Solan at 6.30 am. After an hour-long drive from Solan, we reached Rajgarh. This is a very beautiful place known for its terraced fields.

Our next stop was Nauradhar, the base camp for the summit of Churdhar. Nauradhar is a small market with nearly 50-60 shops catering to the requirements of tourists. It is here that the trekking begin.

We followed some local yatris on their way to Churdhar temple. We met Deshraj a local who runs a dhaba along the trek. He said legend has it that Bhima's grandson Barbareek witnessed the epic war of Mahabharata from this summit. After a three-hour climb we reached a lush green ground. Surrounded by forests, the land is a gujjar settlement. From here, we entered a forest filled with deodar trees and reached another gujjar settlement called Teesri at a height of 10,000 feet. The trek from Nauradhar to Teesri takes around four hours. The trek hereafter is hard and strewn with rocks. After a 40-minute trek, we reached Bhimkhanda. The summit of Churdhar is clearly visible from here. From here a trek goes to the top of the hill having an idol of Lord Shiva. Another trek goes to the main temple and led us to dharamsala for a night stay.

The route ahead leading to Bhimkhanda is very rocky. Trees are scarce and the path has been carved out through huge boulders. Walking up for an hour, a temple appears. There are only a few shops here if you want some snacks. Churdhar Sewa Samiti runs a langar service here from 8 pm to 12 pm. The samiti also provides five blankets at Rs 5.

Here we faced problem in finding a room as the temperature was going down. We asked some people for rooms but they were all full. A group which had accompanied us from Nauradhar gave us some room to stay with them. Despite having five blankets each, we froze in the chill.

We visited Lord Shiva temple early in the morning the next day. From the top the clouds looked like a sea and the peaks like islands. And we feel ourselves top on the World. This temple is accessible only from May to November each year.

How to reach: Chandigarh-Solan-Rajgarh-Deedag-Nauradhar (apx 140 km from Chandigarh ) and then 18km trek one side by feet.

Best time to visit Churdhar: May to October

Note: Bring some woolen clothes

Health on the menu
Going by an increasingly health conscious brigade of people, restaurants are fast converting to healthier food options
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

In the gracious wilderness of restaurant choices where you can whet your appetite and even add a few calories just by reading the rich menu, one can still branch out to discover some healthy options.

Courtesy the fitness freaks who have forced the restaurants to add some healthy options in their menu card. Says Souro Kiran, restaurant manager, Mainland China, "There is an ever-increasing demand for healthy food and before ordering people make sure what ingredients go into the dish and how is it cooked. Since people are health conscious these days we have a number of dishes in our menu card that spell 'healthy'."

From stir-fried Chinese greens to steamed wontons, roast lamb, shredded chicken, steamed crab meat, jasmine rice and a variety of soups here you can also order according to your taste, he says.

"If the customer wants less oil in their food we do it on demand but apart from that the healthy dishes in our menu are enough to sate the gourmets demand," says Souro.

Though it is easy to find restaurants that would make sure you have a calorie packed meal but the once who have a healthy option are a bit difficult to find. But with the changing scenario we would soon see every restaurant going the 'healthy' way.

Raju Chadha from Bombay Chopsticks says, "Healthy menu is quite workable these days and people usually look for healthier options. At our restaurant we have a number of grilled items and they are all low in fat content. Grilled items like assorted vegetable skewers, tofu and bell pepper skewers, grilled vegetables, grilled chicken satay, grilled chicken with lettuce, grilled fish, grilled tiger prawns in pepper sauce and grilled chilli noodles are some of the healthy options in our menu."

For Sandeep Brar from Yin Yang, healthy food is definitely the need of the hour considering our sedentary lifestyle.

He says, "Healthy food is steamed food and our restaurant being a Chinese restaurant has a lot of steamed items. Though Chinese fare has lot of fried stuff too but then no one can deny the variety of steamed food and use of less oil in Chinese dishes. Steamed fish, dimsums, steamed noodles are some of the dishes available in our restaurant."

He adds, "Though we are talking of healthy options but people in Punjab like fried food and in Chinese too they love the American choupsey (fried noodles).

But most of our items are pan fried they are broiled and then pan fried. Other than that our cooking technique uses wok for cooking and the oil that is heated is thrown away and then the food is cooked on a high flame. Well, the food cooked on high flame makes use of less oil."

So, people looking for healthy food option, pan fried is the stuff you can dig your teeth into.

"Our continental and Chinese fare is cooked in olive oil and that makes it quite healthy," says Rajeev Kakkar, group general manager, Hotel Western Court. "Other than that we have lot of clay oven based dishes, steamed and barbeque dishes so those all come under the healthy options."

Well, so next time when you visit a restaurant looking for healthy options you know what you can order!

Inking a saint poet
SD Sharma

To see the release of a book on classical music by Srijan Institute of Creativity at Mount Carmel auditorium was a refreshing experience. The occasion was release of the book Pushtimargiya Sangeet Parampara mein Kumbhandas ka Yogdaan authored by a versatile and vivacious poet, musicologist and performer Nisha Pandya.

The book is a tribute to the saint poet and musician Kumbhandas for his incredible contribution in the field of classical and devotional music from the 15th Century. Pandya says the pristine Indian musical compositions are replete with the spiritual leanings and weaved around the legends of deities and saints. There are very few young scholars who venture into research on such subjects. The book goes to illustrate the spiritual, vedantic and musical knowledge of saint Keetrankar Kumbhandas and the Pushtimargya Sangeet parampara, which is known as Haveli sangeet.

Nisha laments that people hardly know the great saint scholar Kumbhandas, who was much senior and knowledgeable than Surdas.

Born and brought in Udaipur (Rajasthan), Nisha Pandya received a doctorate from Sukhadia University and lives in Chandigarh.

A prolific poet, an able anchor for AIR and Doordarshan shows, this is her second book after "Mein aur mere aas pass", which won Rajasthan Sahitya Akademy Award.

It has to be Mallika Sherawat. She does not know how to carry her self and maybe she also does not know what she wears

Time travel is mission impossible

Hong Kong physicists say they have proved that a single photon obeys Einstein's theory that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light demonstrating that outside science fiction, time travel is impossible.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology research team led by Du Shengwang said they had proved that a single photon, or unit of light, "obeys the traffic law of the universe".

"Einstein claimed that the speed of light was the traffic law of the universe or in simple language, nothing can travel faster than light," the university said on its website.

"Professor Du's study demonstrates that a single photon, the fundamental quanta of light, also obeys the traffic law of the universe just like classical EM waves."

The possibility of time travel was raised 10 years ago when scientists discovered superluminal or faster-than-light propagation of optical pulses in some specific medium, the team said. — AFP

Sonali’s got looks

Sonali Bendre
Sonali Bendre

Stylish and sophisticated Sonali Bendre is back on television with the third season of India's Got Talent on Colors. Thrilled to be back in a slimmer avatar, Sonali talks about her friend and co-judge Kirron, the new judge on the show Dharmendra and why she returns to the show every time.

What brings you back to India's Got Talent for the third time?

I am impressed with the concept, presentation, channel, whole show and everything else. The most important fact is that my thought process with the channel really matches well and it matters to me. This is what brings me back. I could love a concept but if the execution wasn't well I wouldn't want to be part of it. There is a dignity in India's Got Talent which matters a lot. Dignity is something I have had throughout my career and on this show as well.

Do your prefer working with co-judges with whom you have already established a rapport or are you open to working with new co-judges?

Having a new judge every season makes the show fun and exciting. The point of having different judges is to have a new point of view every season. As judges we always have our opinion -at times we agree and at times we disagree. I wouldn't want a burden on my shoulder that my yes or no changed someone's life. People come with so many aspirations that at times it is tough to turn them down. When we have three judges and later the audience votes, the decision is divided and the responsibility to let someone go further is shared too. I like that. We judges are not God so we can make a decision because we are tired or hungry. I don't want that.

Given that there are so many talent shows on television, what do you think is the USP of IGT?

The fact that India's Got Talent brings the abundant talent that India has to the fore. No other show has a platform that any person of any age can perform anything worthy of a talent. The contestants are the USP of our show. Every season I am amazed and surprised to see newer, fresher, bigger talent. These fabulous people and their stories make the show interesting.

What kind of look will you be sporting this season?

Since last two seasons, two girls Shreya and Mandeep who are new in this field but very talented have worked on me. This year, I would like to take their names and tell everyone how talented they are. They have consistently dressed me up fabulously. They have done the impossible happen as I don't like to wear jewellery but being on TV one has to. So, they gave me pieces that look good but aren't too much.
