Rain misery has city residents fuming
Patiala, July 24 The residents rued that for the entire night on Saturday numerous areas of Punjabi Bagh, Gian Colony, Sewak Colony and Sant Nagar had low voltage due to which they were unable to sleep. Meanwhile, residents in Model Town, Charan Bagh, Lehal had a tough time as flood-like situation prevailed due to rain. “The government should see our condition here. It is difficult to even step out of the house and even after the rain stopped there was no electricity”, they rued. When contacted, Patiala Superintendent Engineer, (PSPCL), Balbir Singh Sidhu, confirmed that there was some minor snag near certain residential areas and it was rectified in the morning. “However, these areas will soon be out of problem as we have decided to instal a new transformer in the area within a week so there will no more power snags”, he stated. Earlier on Saturday and Sunday morning, the spells had affected traffic movement and the movement of buses was hit. The road under the flyover near the railway station was choked with water making it impossible for the passersby to move. |

Nine-yr-old injured by power cable
Kharar, July 24 The incidence took place at around 4.30 pm today, when victim Sagar, a student of class II from Government School, Khanpur, was playing on his terrace. Area residents said that one of the cables fell
on the child. His father Gulshan Singh and others first took him to the civil hospital and he was further referred to PGIMER, Chandigarh. The residents said that they had written to the local power authorities many a times apprising them of the low-hanging power cables but all in vain. The police was investigating the matter. |

Five looters held
Fatehgarh Sahib, July 24 Incharge of Sirhind police post SI Vinod Kumar said all the accused had been residing in rented accommodations at Jalandhar, Sirhind and in the Nakodar areas. They admitted to have committed thefts and looting in the past five or six years. Sharp-edged weapons, iron rods and swords have been recovered from their possession besides a stolen motorcycle from Chandigarh. They were planning to loot people near the Sirhind cremation ground from where they were arrested today on a tip off. An amount of Rs 7,000 has also been recovered from their possession, which they admitted to have looted from a migrant labourer who was going towards the railway station. A case in this connection has been registered and they will be produced before the magistrate. Police officials said they would try to procure police remand to crack more cases of loot and thefts. |

3 held with 90 cement bags lifted from PWD store
Ambala, July 24 On getting the information about the cement bags lifted from a PWD store in Ambala Cantt, the Mahesh Nagar police stopped a tractor-trolley carrying cement with three persons sitting in the vehicle, including the driver. They were going on the Babyal road. According to police sources, three persons, including Sukhvinder Singh, Darshan Singh and the driver of a tractor trolley, Nirmal Singh, were arrested near Indira Chowk on Babyal road who were in a tractor-trolley with 90 cement bags from a PWD B and R store with the consent from the storekeeper. The arrested persons were residents of Rolan village who were allegedly involved in lifting 90 cement bags from PWD Band R store. The police has seized 90 bags and is looking for contractor Ravinder and PWD storekeeper who have been absconding so far. Those arrested during preliminary investigation claimed that they were innocent and were engaged only for loading and transportation in the deal between the contractor and the storekeeper. The contractor was said to have conspired with the employee of the PWD storekeeper who was currently at large, they alleged. |
Rs 1.25 lakh missing from trader’s bank account
Ambala, July 24 Sources said that ~ 25,000 was withdrawn from the trader’s account through the ATM card on July 19 late night by two masked youths, according to footage from CCTV camera installed at the ATM of Punjab National Bank branch at Baldev Nagar. Charanjit further said that ~ 1 lakh was found transferred from my account to some other account of the same bank. The trader finding the amount withdrawn from his account he also lodged a complaint with the Baldev Nagar police station. The police has registered a case but no arrest had been made so far. |

One booked for gang-rape
Chandigarh, July 24 The police booked 26-year-old Parmod Bhargav of Zirakpur, but he was yet to be arrested. The victim, a resident of Sector 43, was allegedly abducted by Parmod in May from near Ram Darbar. The medical examination of the victim confirmed rape and an FIR was registered at the sector-31 police station. The victim recorded her statement today under Section 164 of the CrPC before the duty magistrate at the district courts, Sector 17. In her statement, the victim alleged that she was kept in illegal confinement at Badal Colony in Zirakpur and the accused, along with his friends, used to gang-rape her. She stated that they used to blackmail her by saying they would show her obscene MMS to her husband. She added that she knew Parmod, but had severed ties with him after marriage. Inspector Jaspal Singh said Parmod was admitted to Landmark Hospital at Sector 33 as he had had a scuffle with someone at Zirakpur and sustained injuries. He said the cell phone of accused was seized and it would be sent to the CFSL in Sector 36 for forensic examination. The victim was married to a Sector-43 resident six months ago. The other accused were yet to be identified. The police said Pramod would be arrested as soon as he was discharged from hospital. |

Leheri outshines Saniya in snooker
Chandigarh, July 24 Leheri managed to overcame Saniya by 1-2 in a tough settled clash. In form player, Saniya after taking full advantage of three consecutive fowls committed by her opponent won the first frame by 34-24. But Leheri came back with a break of 20 to take the lead during the second frame. In the third frame, Saniya potted the black and took a lead but Leheri after making a lead of 12 won the third frame of the match. Earlier, Saniya Arif finished as runner-up in the sub-junior snooker event of the competition. |

Bassi Pathana, July 24 She distributed sports and gym kits to the club. Appreciating the efforts of Sukhbir Badal, Deputy Chief Minister, in promoting the sports and channelising the energy of youths in a positive manner at the block level, she said youth of the country had great potential and we must involve them in a war against social evils like drug abuse, female foeticide and dowry. She said it was only youth, who could eradicate them from society. She urged the youths to form more sports clubs at the village level to promote traditional Punjabi sports. |

Chandigarh, July 24 The players who has brought laurels after winning the first three positions in athletics, archery, badminton, basketball, billiards, snookers, boxing, cricket, canoeing, cycling, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, handball, judo, kabaddi, kho-kho, lawn tennis, rifle shooting, rowing, sailing, yachting, skating, skiing, swimming, softball, squash, table tennis, tae-kwon-do, volleyball and weightlifting events during the UT or state championship for seniors, inter-college, inter-school (U-19) and juniors inter-school tournaments (U-14, U-17) held last year will be awarded.
