Lalru, July 23
The downpour today created a flood like situation at Lalru village and Lalru mandi. Rainwater had entered the houses of the residents in the absence of proper drainage system.

The residents had to face a tough time as rainwater had damaged household goods after entering their houses.

Krishan Gupta, a resident of the area, said: “There is no place to sit in my house as rainwater has entered in the rooms. The drains are blocked since a long time.”

Construction of new colonies was also causing blockage of the drainage system. Meanwhile, executive officer Garish Verma refused to comment on the situation and said he was not bound to give answers to such questions.

Woman levels rape charge against husband

A Gillco Valley area resident has alleged that her husband married her without seeking divorce from his first wife and marrying yet another woman without her knowledge.

Alleging her husband of cheating, rape and demanding dowry, the woman approached the Kharar police. Acting on her complaint, the police has booked Abhishek Walia, a resident of Gillco area.

In her complaint to the police, the woman stated that Walia had given a matrimonial ad in a newspaper in 2009.

As per the address mentioned in the newspaper, when the complainant and her family members came to meet Walia’s family in the Gillco area, they met Abhishek and his mother Madhu Walia.

The mother-son told the complainant’s family that Abhishek was earlier married to a woman, Vandana, and the two have separated their ways after divorce.

Consequently, the complainant got married to Abhishek in 2009 and started living in Gillco valley. After two years of marriage, the complainant got suspicious that Abhishek had not divorced his first wife.

She asked Abhishek to show the divorce papers, but he kept on dilly-dallying. She contacted Abhishek’s first wife Vandana and found out that they had not divorced.

She also discovered that Abhishek had married another woman, Sonia, at Jalandhar. The police has registered a case against Abhishek.

Institute awarded

Dera Bassi, July 23
Swami Parmanand Group of Colleges has won an award, “Best ICT Enabled Higher Education Institute of the Year”, for imparting technical education to rural and sub-rural youth. This award was given during the World Education Summit 2011 in New Delhi recently.

Last time the recipient of this award was Punjab Technical University, Jallandhar. The summit was organised by Indira Gandhi National Open University. — OC

Gang of criminals busted
5 cases of snatching, auto lifting, burglary solved

Chandigarh, July 23
The crime branch of the police has arrested five persons and claimed to have solved five cases of snatching, auto lifting and burglary.The accused, Raju, Krishan, Yogesh, Avtar Singh and Sanjay, were sent to judicial custody for 14 days.

Inspector Amanjot Singh, in charge, crime branch, said a stolen Maruti car and two snatched gold chains were recovered from Avtar Singh, a resident of Hoshiarpur, and ornaments, some electronic goods were recovered from Raju and Krishan.

All five accused have a tainted past and are involved in more than a dozen burglaries, thefts and snatching incidents in Panchkula, Mohali and in Chandigarh.

The police has also informed the neighbouring police authorities about their arrest.

Stunt cyclists have a wheelie good time

La Sovereign Bicycles, an Indo-Thai joint venture, organised an enthralling cycling stunt show at the Sukhna Lake here today in a bid to promote the sport and to create awareness on the need to save the lake.

A team of seven BMX riders showcased their cycling stunts in this show. The two-hour show was inaugurated by Rakesh Mohindra, secretary, Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association, who was of the view that such an event would encourage youngsters to take up cycling. Nakul Moudgill, the event manager of the show, said, “This event targets the youth who have great energy levels.”

The seven riders included four from Chandigarh - Manu Chauhan, Shubham, Navi and Abhishek Soni - and three from the NCR - Vipul, Shobit and Bharat.

Manu Chauhan (17), a student of DAV School, Chandigarh, has been practicing cycling stunts for the past five years and rides a P2 specialised bicycle worth Rs 2.8 lakh. Manu quips, “This is my passion and I can’t resist performing stunts on my bike. I am happy to receive a huge support from my parents because of which, I am now planning to travel across the country with LA-Sovereign to perform stunts.”

City girl enters final of national snooker tourney

Saniya Arif, a student of Carmel Convent, Sector 9, created history by entering the finals of Junior Girls (under 21) in the 78th National Billiards and Snooker Championship being held at Chennai. Arif defeated second seed Keerath Bandal of Delhi in a thrilling encounter.

Keerath started well in the first frame and took a lead. Down around 20 points, Saniya covered the lead by hitting break of 13 points. The frame was close till the brown when Keerath potted and won the first frame. In the second frame Saniya took an initial lead by potting a long red and then a pink. In the very next visit she again potted blue to increase the lead. Keerath covered the lead by potting a brown and a green. The frame went to Saniya's favour when Keerath missed blue and Saniya potted it.

With scores at one all, the third frame started with safety by both the players. The frame scores were moving like a sea saw and with two reds on the table score read 24-24. Saniya potted a red and made a controlled snooker behind brown. Keerath gave 8 points on fowl as the snooker was near to perfection. Saniya got a log pot which she potted placing pink. She then potted the pink and took the frame against Keerath.

Saniya, who has finished runners-up in the Sub-Junior Snooker earlier, has a long way to go in the sport of Cue sport. In the senior snooker event also Saniya beat her opponent from Tamil Nadu and lost to Uma Devi in the league matches. She enters in the top 16 and would be playing her pre-quarter final.

The first Chandigarh Tricity Twenty-20 League Cricket Championship for under-16 boys will be held from August 15.This was stated by newly elected chairman of the Chandigarh Twenty-20 Cricket Association, affiliated with the Indian Twenty-20 Federation (ITCF), after an election meeting.

V Hanumantha Rao, Rajya Sabha MP and secretary, All-India Congress Committee, and Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Haryana CM, were elected life chief patrons of the association.
