Plan hatched in jail, says police

Police investigations into the murder of a scrap dealer, Rajesh Kala, in Mauli Jagran last night has pointed out that the conspiracy to shoot the victim was allegedly hatched by a suspect lodged in Burail Jail.

Only 1 cop for over 2,000 residents

Showcasing the utter failure of the UT police in tackling crime in this area, Mauli Jagran is emerging as the most crime sensitive zone of the city. Yesterday’s shooting is the third murder in Mauli Jagran this year. Over eight incidents of assault on the police, including smashing of a police Gypsy, were reported last year. Yet, all police measures have either turned out to be inadequate or ineffective.

Delay in appointment of PGI Director

MSc seats at PU go begging after dismal test results

Of the 600 candidates who appeared in the other common entrance test (OCET) conducted by Panjab University this year for admission to the master of science (physics) course, barely 90 were able to clear it. As a result several seats for the course in colleges affiliated to the varsity, which are filled up on the basis of OCET, remain vacant.

2 killed in accident
Chandigarh, July 19
Two persons died in an accident near the Hallomajra roundabout here tonight after a Scorpio hit them. The police said the victims were daily labourers who had been identified as Lalan and Uma, residents of Hallomajra. The police said after the accident, the vehicle turned over and the driver also sustained injuries.

In a step closer towards the formation of the joint police commissionerate for the Panchkula and Ambala districts, the Haryana state finance department has approved 75 new posts for the commissionerate system. The state government is claiming that in one-month time they will issue notification for the commissionerate system.

The accused in police custody at Dera Bassi on Tuesday 1 held for stealing jewellery
Dera Bassi, July 19
The police claims to have arrested a person and recovered stolen jewellery worth Rs 3 lakh from his possession within 24 hours of the burglary incident here today.
The accused was identified as Rajiv Kumar, hailing from Karnal. The SHO said a burglary incident was reported in house number 478 of Jitendra Angrish, in Dadpura Muhall, Dera Bassi.

Six detained till rising of court for drunk driving

Continuing its drive against drunk driving, the special traffic court imprisoned six persons till the rising of the court today.
Since the past one month, the special traffic court of Deepak Raj Garg has awarded punishment to 25 drunk drivers.

Bus crushes BCA student to death
Chandigarh, July 19
A 19-year-old student of Government College for Girls (GCG), Sector 11, was killed after being crushed by a speeding bus near Badheri roundabout in Sector 41 here this evening.

Driver flees with Rs 11 lakh belonging to employer
Chandigarh, July 19
A 35-year-old man hired as a car driver fled with Rs 11 lakh cash belonging to his employer in Sector 17 on Tuesday. The police has filed a case against him based on the complaint lodged by a property dealer residing in Sector 15, Randhir Sood, alleging the suspect stole a briefcase containing Rs 11 lakh and some documents from his car.
