1 held for stealing jewellery

The police claims to have arrested a person and recovered stolen jewellery worth Rs 3 lakh from his possession within 24 hours of the burglary incident here today.

The accused was identified as Rajiv Kumar, hailing from Karnal. The SHO said a burglary incident was reported in house number 478 of Jitendra Angrish, in Dadpura Muhall, Dera Bassi. The burglar reportedly decamped with four gold rings, two diamond rings, three gold chains, two silver rings besides a gold bracelet last night.

The police had already registered a case in this regard. Rajiv was intercepted by the night patrolling party being pressed into service after the incident. The police had arrested him on the Barwala road during a naka. Rajiv had confessed that he was involved in 25 theft incidents at various places. The accused would be presented in a court tomorrow.

Six detained till rising of court for drunk driving

Continuing its drive against drunk driving, the special traffic court imprisoned six persons till the rising of the court today.

Since the past one month, the special traffic court of Deepak Raj Garg has awarded punishment to 25 drunk drivers.

The court awarded punishment to Prem Singh, a resident of Sector 47, (alcohol content of 146 mg, Harbir Singh, a resident of Mohali, (alcohol content 253 mg), Sunil Kumar of Sector 12-A, Panchkula (alcohol content 185 mg), Rajesh Kumar, a resident of PGI, (alcohol content 236 mg), Sandeep of Sector 32 (alcohol content 255 mg) and Mohali resident Sukhwant Singh, (alcohol content 184 mg).

DSP (Traffic) Vijay Kumar said apart from awarding punishment, the court also imposed a fine ranging between Rs 1,500 and Rs 2,000 on drunk drivers.

The police also challaned 200 drivers, including 20 minors, for various traffic violations. A total of 125 challans were issued for helmet-less driving, the DSP added.

Bus crushes BCA student to death

A 19-year-old student of Government College for Girls (GCG), Sector 11, was killed after being crushed by a speeding bus near Badheri roundabout in Sector 41 here this evening.

The victim, Romi, was a final-year BCA student and the youngest of three sisters. The police has arrested the driver of the bus, Satvir Singh, in a case of causing death due to negligent driving under Section 304-A of the IPC. A case has been registered at the Sector 39 police station.

The incident took place when she was on her way to her residence in Sector 56 from a coaching centre in Sector 41 on her Honda Activa scooter. A Punjab Roadways bus hit her scooter from the rear. Her head was crushed under a wheel of the bus. She was rushed to GMCH-32 where she succumbed to her injuries.

2 get life term for murder

Additional District and Sessions Judge Lalit Batra today awarded life term to the two residents of Faida village, near Sector 48, for murder.

The court had convicted the duo on Monday and had deferred the quantum of sentence for today. The case dates back to September 2009. The court has also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on the convicts.

On September 29, 2009, Jaspal Singh and Shiv Kumar had set Brij Lal, a resident of the same village, afire after pouring kerosene oil on him. Brij Lal succumbed to his injuries on October 1, 2009.

Driver flees with Rs 11 lakh belonging to employer

A 35-year-old man hired as a car driver fled with Rs 11 lakh cash belonging to his employer in Sector 17 on Tuesday. The police has filed a case against him based on the complaint lodged by a property dealer residing in Sector 15, Randhir Sood, alleging the suspect stole a briefcase containing Rs 11 lakh and some documents from his car.

The incident reportedly took place at around 2:30 pm when Sood went to Sector 17 to meet a senior government official. The driver of his car, later identified as Tara Chand, a native of Nepal, is absconding along with his family members.

Sources close to the police said the briefcase was kept on the rear seat of the car and Chand was aware about the cash kept in it.

Several important documents pertaining to land deals and properties were also in the briefcase.

Chand was hired by Sood a few months ago and was staying along with his wife in Kansal village near Chandigarh, the police said.

Bibaswan Deb and Anshuman Dutta defeated Himanshu Malli and Vishwanath Savadi in the men’s doubles of the CLTA-AITA Chandigarh Open-50K Men and Women Tennis Tournament, being organised at the CLTA complex and the Lake Sports Complex, here today.

In a tough match, Deb and Dutta won 2-6, 6-3, 10-8. In a prequarterfinal match in women’s doubles, Vineeta Singh and Victoria Chahal went down to Eetee Mehta and Vaibhavi Trivedi in a tough three-setter 2-6, 6-4, 10-6.

In a women’s singles prequarterfinal clash, Nupur Koul blanked Baljinder Kaur 6-0, 6-0. Gurinder Singh defeated Pulok Bhatacharya 6-0, 6-2 in the men’s singles category.

Roopnagar book berth in semis

Arjun Jonty helped Roopnagar to reach the semifinals of the Inter-District Cricket (U-19) Tournament being organised by the Roopnagar District Cricket Association at Government College, Roopnagar, today.

Earlier in the match, Roopnagar defeated SAS Nagar by 45 runs. Batting first, Roopnagar scored 149 runs in the allotted 35 overs. Arjun Jonty contributed 43 runs in the team’s total, whereas his counterpart Rohit contributed 26 runs.

For SAS Nagar, Gurpreet, Ashish Sidhu and Sucham took two wickets each.

In reply, SAS Nagar team bowled out on 104 runs in 30 overs. Anmol top the team’s scorecard with 31 runs. Abhijit (29) and Ashish Sidhu (17) were other main contributors. For Roopnagar, Arjun Jonty took three wickets, while Jaideep and Lovlesh managed to grab two wickets each.

Arjun Jonty was adjudged man of the match for his overall performance.

Local girl in billiards semis

Local girl Saniya Arif defeated Arya Pimple of Maharashtra to enter the semifinals of the 78th National Billiards and Snooker (Girls) Championship in Chennai today.

Saniya defeated her opponent in the sub-junior category of the billiards event. She overcame Arya 126-86 after breaks of 24 and 18 to book her place in the last four.

Saniya was representing the city in all six events of the championship. In the semifinals, she would face second seed Kirat Bandal of Delhi.

Tae kwon do meet from July 23

The Chandigarh Tae Kwon Do Association will organise a two-day State Tae Kwon Do Championship at Shiv Mandir Complex, Industrial Area, Ram Darbar, from July 23.

Top positions holders of the competition will be selected for the forthcoming tae kwon do national championship.

The national meet will be organised by the Tae Kwon Do Federation of India. Those interested can contact the authorities for registration.

The Chandigarh Carrom Association has come out with its annual calendar. It has decided to organise the 14th St Stephen’s Carrom Ranking Tournament from August 25 to 27.

The 21st Chandigarh State Carrom Tournament will be organised from September 22 to 24. The 13th Raj Kumar Babuta Memorial Tournament will be held from November 3 to 5.
