When talent meets chance!
Garry Gill, who will star in Pammi Somal's movie Na Jaane Kab Sey, calls his journey ‘Luck By Chance’
Jasmine Singh

Garry Gill
Riding high: Garry Gill

A birdie just dropped important news, which says that there is a vacancy in Bollywood and all eligible persons can apply. So, what if this birdie is also one of the applicants, and the good news is he's got lucky! Meet Garry Gill, who is starring in Pammi Somal's Na Jaane Kab Sey in Chandigarh to talk something he calls, Luck By Chance. This Ludhiana-bred engineer is all set for his debut, but not before a walk through the 'not-so-rosy' pastures!

"I shifted to Mumbai almost four years back. Even when I was prepared for a tough ride, meeting directors, arranging for portfolio is like a 24X7 struggle. Then one day when I was moving around in a mall in Mumbai, a bunch of kids approached me for an autograph. They 'obviously' mistook me for a star. That's when Pammi Somal saw me and approached me for the role," smiles Garry, calling his journey - 'Luck By Chance.'

Things are looking brighter now. "In the end it comes down to the choices one makes in life. I am a certified engineer, but I choose to follow my passion, which is acting. I roughed it out in Mumbai and finally I am getting my due," says Garry, who is trained in acting and martial arts.

The sky is blue and bright, nevertheless Garry has his 'Bollywood priority' clear. "I am ready to wait for a good project in films rather than do television. But beggars can't be choosers; it is a matter of simple choice still. I want to be a part of good cinema," adds the actor who is confident that Bollywood has a place for every dreamer. "Hindi cinema is forthcoming to people like us. Now, all we have to do is step up and show our talent. Lots of new directors are ready to give each one of us a chance."

This one sounds way too confident! Did anyone tell him survival also depends on something called money? "Indeed money is important. I was working in Mumbai, and thankfully I had the complete support of my parents. Now, I have to take on the lead." Mumbai always teaches a thing or two. "This is a city that makes and breaks dreams. Aspiring youngsters from small towns and cities look up to only Mumbai; this is a city where destiny is made by chance!"

Singing folk tunes and filmy songs in his native town, Mansa, Subhash Goyal would never have dreamt of coming to a big city.

However, his father advised him to pick up music as a profession. Later, he did M. Phil from Delhi University and is presently pursuing a doctorate. In the meantime, he started singing a few duets with Anju Malik, who is also pursuing post-graduation in music from the Delhi University. What makes an all-male party so much more fun? Manpriya Khurana finds out

Spoilt for fun
Being brats: Spoilt for fun

Boys will be boys. And with no women around, even men will be boys! You can use swear words, bathe in beer, laugh out loud, check out women, discuss soccer, pick up a fight and above all be little boys! The Hollywood blockbuster Hangover put across the message, loud and clear. Recently released Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara too perhaps cashes in on all male bonding. Without their fair counterparts, these Jacks are no dull boys. Men list what makes an all-male party “oh so much fun.”

Don’t they say it right, ‘When I grow up, I want to be a little boy’? “You don’t have to drop anyone, pick anyone, reach on time, be back home or be someone else,” chuckles Waris Trehan, chemical engineering student, Baddi. He adds, “I guess it works both ways. I’m sure that must be the case with all-girls parties too. When it’s all boys, it’s a lot more fun.” The hostel night parties that he had during school and college days are the ones that he counts among priceless.

The fact that it’s an exclusive club, adds to the charm. Bachelor’s parties are anyway about stuff that boys’ dream of. No restrictions, no hang ups, no one to keep track of, or no one controlling. Laughs Manuj Sharma, student, Panjab Engineering College, “Whenever we do not have girls around us, we like to go uphill, stay at a friends place in Kasauli, stay up all night playing cards. Mostly we do have girls around us and whenever we don’t, we are constantly on the move.” He adds, “There are no restrictions. You can head anywhere, any hour of the day, without bothering about the girls’ safety.” Does the rest of the lot (read feminists) swell up their noses!

A group of boys having a gala time together
Boys’ Day Out: A group of boys having a gala time together

More than anything else, it’s the sheer boy pleasure that takes precedence over anything else. Nods Samandeep Tinna, pass-out from University Institute of Legal Studies, “With girls around, we spend half the time and energies checking them out. When left alone, there’s an uninhibited and free flowing conversation, there are no pretenses and you can be yourself. But that for sure works with both genders.” Who hasn’t heard screaming girls over what makes an all-girls gang a perfect haven for fun. Close friends’ bachelors’ parties are what he rates the highest on the fun quotient.

Back to where it all began from, what do the guys discuss when left all to themselves? Says GurJeet Toor, DAV College student, “More than what we discuss, it’s how we discuss those things that matters. Everything is boyish, even if it’s girls we are talking about.” Apart from the gender specific topics, there are also the stereotypical subjects. Read abs, cars, gym, girls, booze…It’s no rocket science, what makes an all-male gathering a hit. Don’t boys too just “wanna have fun.” Shares Waris, “With no girls around, we do whatever we cannot do with them around.” Wink!

Face of Reality

Social network sites like Facebook and Twitter have been held responsible for extramarital affairs leading to the breakdown of marriages. And in a bid to "prevent broken marriages" the Malacca state government is planning to have a counselling session for married couples. State Woman, Family Development and Welfare Committee chairman Datuk Norpipah Abdol said the proposed counselling session would address the negative impact of social networking.

"Online social media is a great way to connect with people and families but as we engage with others online, we must always remember to live within boundaries," Abdol said. "It's the only way to protect our marriage," she added. "We can't prevent married couples from having Facebook and Twitter accounts. We want to tell them their limitations and not to antagonise their partners.

"We are designing a module to emphasise how they can use social networks to strengthen the family institution and not indulge in cyber love affairs that could break-up their marriage," she added.

She said the counselling session would also encourage couples to use social media to have a stronger bond with their spouses instead. — ANI

Grooming a Bride
Jasmine Singh

The institution of marriage has changed, newer connotations, and new happenings….if everything has changed, wouldn't the look of a bride.

No longer does she walk shy, veiled under a net, trying to get a glimpse of her groom.

There is a change. She has pulled the veil behind, added fresh flowers and takes small confident steps towards the dais. More on the change, then look up Cleopatra's launch of make up trends 2011-2012.

Fresh, without being over the top, the new bride has loads of options to choose from.

Richa Aggarwal, director, Cleopatra, Day Spa Beauty and Bridal Studio shares, "There are two different looks for the bride, one with all glitters, and one which is absolutely nude with a touch of gloss."

If you want to go with Kareena Kapoor look from '3 Idiots', nude with and gloss is what you require. Don't worry you would still look attractive.

Says Richa, "We use a golden base or any other with some good gloss that makes the bride stand out. Bold and bright lips, smoky eyes with a splash of colour, showing of natural skin are what define the nude look."

Now to put those locks in shape, the brides avoid bun these days. Plait with accessories on it is the new trend.

"We use a lot of hair accessories and fresh flowers like Orchids, Lilly, Roses and incarnations to give a different hair look," shares Ritu. This hair style is touted to take the ramp scene for the coming season. "I have seen girls don't prefer to cover their head on the wedding day. Hair accessories are the best option here."

The Foodies
Delightfully Chinese!
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Its compelling tagline is not to be missed. Well, who doesn't like Chinese and in the search of a perfect meal we visited the restaurant Mainland China in Sector 26, Chandigarh, and yes, we weren't disappointed.

Plush interiors, the décor of the restaurant is well lit and has life size Chinese figurines to welcome you. With private dining space to 'alone' in the crowd seating arrangement the restaurant serves a delectable Chinese cuisine; with specialty in Cantonese, Szechwan and Hunan variety.

Talking about the menu, it is exhaustive and one has to be selective in placing the order. Though there is a wide variety starting from chicken to prawns to lobsters, fish and crabmeat, for the humble vegetarians there is no less choice.

Veggies can order from a wide selection of Chinese greens like black mushrooms, Pok Choy, broccoli et al. To begin with there is variety of soups to sip from. From the usual sweet corn to duck meat and Chinese cabbage thick soup you can choose from chicken or vegetable clear soup, but what we ordered was eight treasure soup (coriander and chilli flavoured thick soup with spinach, carrot, corn, mushroom and almond). Though the soup tastes more like a sweet corn soup but it has health benefits of eight vegetables and to top it are almonds. For starters again there is a whole lot of variety; you can go for dimsums, wontons, spring rolls or a variety of vegetable, sea food or chicken appetizers (as they call it in the menu) we asked for crackling spinach and dumplings. The spinach was finely chopped and deep fried with a sweet and salty taste.

Awesome in taste, the dumplings too was a treat. For you, take your pick as you can order from golden fried duck rolls with chilli hoisin sauce or the Cantonese prawn rolls. For the health conscious their lettuce wraps with sautéed water chestnuts, corn and mushroom is a perfect deal. For the main course the choice is difficult to make since the menu is too big. We decided on pan fried Hakka noodles with prawns, seasonal vegetables in Mahlak sauce in clay pot, Golden garlic fried rice with iceberg and Pan fired greens with crushed ginger and garlic pods. The food tasted as good as the personalized service so if you are fond of Chinese this restaurant is a must visit. For money, this is little expensive, but don't all good things come at a price. A meal for two would cost around Rs 1500 to Rs 2000 here.

Couple of chemistry

For Raman and Sukhwinder Singh Chinese is a favourite cuisine. They love the
food so much that they visit the restaurant almost twice a month.

Their order: Wontons, steamed prawn. Yue Yang spicy barbecued fish braised chicken with orange and blackbean and mixed meat fried rice.

Best among the lot: Their soups and rice are good.

Price: Expensive but ok.

Service: Excellent.

Meal for two: Rs 1,800 (approximately).

Sunday Munch

The idea is to make you feel special; make you feel relaxed. On a Sunday afternoon, you can't ask for more than a Sunday Brunch at the Hotel Hometel.

Pick what you like from the options galore. There is a variety of pasta, sandwiches, kathi rolls, salamis, Punjabi and South Indian cuisine. The list includes dishes for children.

"What all children love to have is in the menu. Maggi, popcorn, ice creams are only for them. For their entertainment, there is a video game center and a few drawing books," comes from Ashish Bali, executive chef. This is to ensure that parents can spare sometime for themselves.

A dozen options are there when it comes to mocktails. At the special counter, guests are taught how to prepare mocktails. "The idea is to involve guests as much as we can. So every alternate week, we either have live cake baking or mocktails classes."

The must try here are Muddy Water and Virgin Mojito drinks. There is also a variety of salads to choose from besides a live kitchen. Chef’s favourite is donor kebab, a Lebanese specialty. The brunch begins from Rs 475 plus taxes. — Ashima Sehajpal

Skewered Delights
Poonam Bindra

All eating joints seem to be in the mood to celebrate the monsoon with unique gastronomical delights. There are several food concepts to choose from as well. The latest to jump on the band wagon is a comparatively new Hotel Keys on the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Road. It offers a bonanza of kebabs and drinks at their special bar 'Unlock Bar'.

Assistant F&B manager Rajesh Ranjan said, "Along with a variety of kebabs we are also offering hard and soft drinks in the buffet only." They said, “Succulent kebabs both in the vegetarian and non-vegetarian varieties greeted us at the attractive lay out and when we tasted Avadhi kebab from Lucknow cuisine. It just melts in the mouth. Close second were the gilavati and kakori kebabs all with the typical Lucknowi touch.”

The festival had a great variety to please the vegetarians too. "We have tasted vegetarian hara bhara and seekh kebabs and these are the best-so crunchy and so delicious," said a visitor Dr Sheena.

"The combination of beer and chicken tikka is awesome," says executive Mohit Trehan who was there for a quick bite. To add to the experience is groovy music pelted out by a Phillipino Band.

Also on offer are Amritsari paneer kebab and murgh malai tikka. So for a royal bite and a cool drink this is the place to be. Cost: Rs 475/ plus taxes for vegetarian and Rs 575/ plus taxes for non-vegetarian food. (On till July 31)

The Year Ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is July 17...

Your birth on the 17th day of July suggests that you are fortunate financially as you come with a solid business sense. Although you are honest and ethical, this birthday enables you to be shrewd and successful in the world of business. You have excellent organisational, managerial and administrative capabilities that help you handle large projects with ease. A sensitivity in your nature, often repressed below the surface of awareness, makes it hard to give or receive affection. Business: Be ready for some criticism. If it doesn't feel constructive, breathe deep and explore with questions instead of getting bent out of shape. Your best skills – interpersonal communication, presentational and imaginative -- are extra sharp now. Chatter Box
Reality shows we are eying

In the recent past we have seen a variety of reality shows on television ranging from stunt based, task based, singing, dancing, housemates, Swayamvar etc. While few have had repeat seasons and the love of the audiences, there are few who have gone missing. These reality shows had grabbed headlines but today are forgotten. We remember some of those reality shows which are lost and which would be gladly welcome back on the television.

Nach Baliye

This show truly was unique when it was aired both on Star One and Star Plus, all seasons were memorable for the audiences -be it Saroj Khan's whistle for the perfect dance or Sanjeeda Sheikh and Aamir Ali's performances. With each new season, the show became more successful . The show discovered the hidden dance chemistry between Sachin and Supriya Pilgoankar and Tina Dharia-Kuwajerwala who became best dancers on the show. We saw great chemistry between couples and some mind blowing acts. The concept is still relevant and interesting and if the makers came up with a new season, it will be a delight to watch this show with new celeb couples like Sushant Singh Rajput-Ankita Lokhande, Nandish Sandhu-Rashmi Desai etc.

Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao

After Bigg Boss, Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao was the show to watch for the inside gossips of actors on television. This reality show entertained the audiences in its first and only season of the show. The show became controversial when Shewta Tiwari and Nigaar Khan were captured bathing in skimpy bikinis. It was also in the news for the drama and tantrums of Akashdeep Saigal. Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao would be a great change there are new celebs who can provide enough drama and controversy like Veena Malik, Ashmit Patel, Rahul Mahajan, Dolly Bindra. It would be great fun and huge entertainment to watch these contestants in the jungles of Malaysia.

Dus Ka Dum

This show gave a boost to Sony and gave tough competition to other reality shows in it's first season. Everyone loved Salman Khan's debut as a host of the quiz show as he became the USP and turned the show into a huge hit. The format of the show was unique and loved by the audiences. Salman's casual avatar won their hearts. Fans also loved Salman's masti during the show and his frank interaction with the audiences and contestants, which made the show very popular. The second season of Dus Ka Dum was bigger hit than the first but then Salman's demand for a pay hike stalled the season 3. He went on to hosting Bigg Boss 4. Speculations are that Sanjay Dutt might anchor the next season of Dus Ka Dum. We will wait and watch.

Star Voice of India

A still from Star Voice of IndiaIt was the first Indian singing competition produced by Star Plus. The show was directed by Gajendra Singh, creator of the famous Sa Re Ga Ma Pa series. This show highlighted the real singing talents across India and brought forth singers like Toshi Sabri and Abbhas Joshi, who later hosted Chhote Ustaad season one. It would be great fun to watch some new talent in this format.

Singing talent: A still from Star Voice of India

Indian Idol

When Indian Idol was launched, no one realised it would do wonders for Sony as the show got great TRPs. It gave importance to emerging talents in singing and even showcased their stories which were quite emotional. Judges Farah Khan, Anu Malik and Sonu Nigam were a huge draw but later the singers brought in audiences. The contestants of season one were more successful as compared to the other seasons. Today, Sony has a new format, a new concept in singing competition in X Factor India.

Chote Miyan

This Colors show gave the world of television a young prodigy Saloni, who got popular after her famous act as Gangubai. She became the USP of the show and the winner too. Chote Miyan gave encouragement to kids to brush up their talent in comedy and Sachin Pilgaonkar and Rahul Mahajan were apt judges for the same.

Makeover Magic

Pushtiie Shakti
Transformed beauty: Pushtiie Shakti

Pushtiie Shakti, who was recently seen in the movie Luv Ka The End, is best known as the cute, bubbly and overweight Mahi from Mahi Way on Sony. With reports that the second season of the show will start in the near future, Pushtiie recently did a photo shoot with photographer Vivek Tickoo in which she donned a drastic new look.

Pushtiie says, "My look has always been described as sweet and cute. I was looking for a change and Vivek suggested that I explore the other side of my personality. I had just two costume changes during the entire shoot, one was a dress made of jute and the other one was a fairytale kind of dress but each photograph looks so different. When I saw the pictures I could not believe that I was looking hot as I have never seen my self looking so good." The actress laughs, "I look at the pictures daily to make sure that the lady in them is me."

Revealing about her favourite photograph, Pushtiie says, "Even though, it is difficult to choose, I like the one where my face is plain with just eye makeup which has been captured very well." When asked about Mahi Way-2, the actress quips, "I have heard about it too but have not received a confirmation from the team."

Speaking about the shoot, photographer Vivek Tickoo says, "Pushtiie was looking for a change of her 'cute' image. We got an international stylist and well known makeup artist Vrinda More to work on her look. We gave her a completely glamorous look and she was shocked with the end result."

Well, we have to say this is one makeover that left us stunned too. —HRM

Great Indian Laughter Challenge

A still from Laughter Challenge
Rib Ticklers: A still from Laughter Challenge

The show makers proved the proverb that laughter is the best medicine as with this show, they truly gave a chance to new comic talent in our country. The Great Indian Laughter Challenge was one of the very successful reality shows on Indian television. It had a good run through three seasons with variety of stand-up comedians and performers from all over India. Judged by eminent TV personality Shekhar Suman and cricket commentator Navjot Singh Sidhu, this show gave the television industry comic geniuses like Sunil Pal, Ahsaan Qureshi, Naveen Prabhakar, etc.

Bringing bhabi back

Tejprakash and Toasty
Bridging the gap: Tejprakash and Toasty

In Sony's Saas Bina Sasuraal, Toasty is back with her family and happy too. But she is now hell bent on bringing her bhabhi Malti back home too and has launched a plan to re-settle her jeth Pashupati. Toasty not only has to patao Pashupati but his father as well as both refuse to let Malti return. Tej says, "Toasty has a plan and in the upcoming episodes, you will see how we bring Malti bhabhi home. There are cute moments and plans to bring them come closer."

Dancing challenge

Zee's 4th Gold Awards saw a deluge of mind-blowing dance performances and comedy gags - one of them being battle of the roses, with actress Hina Khan challenging Parul Chauhan to a saucy item number dance-off! While Hina turned on the heat swaying to Sheila Ki Jawaani, Parul had the crowd eating out of her hands as she shimmied to Munni Badnaam Hui. Aware that Parul is a cut above her in the dance department, Hina apparently was insecure of Parul and would closely monitor her rehearsals. Hina even made changes to her costume last minute to outshine Parul.

Star Track
If stars turned authors…
Bollywood celebrities sure can write a couple of books by drawing fodder from their own life experiences. Here are our suggestions to help them get started

Kareena Kapoor: Missing the National Award

Kareena KapoorThe gorgeous actress has turned down the award-winning director not once but thrice. She turned down Page 3. The film went on to win several National

Awards (Bobby Pushkarna won for Best Film, Nina Arora and Manoj Tyagi won for Best Screenplay, and Suresh Pai won for Best Editing) and practically launched Konkona Sen Sharma's Bollywood career.

Kareena then refused to be part of Fashion. Priyanka Chopra lapped up the role and went on to win the

National Award for Best Actress while Kangna Ranaut won the National Award for Best Supporting Actress. Things seemed to be finally working out when

Kareena and Madhur agreed to work on Heroine. However, there were date clashes with Short Term Shaadi and Bebo chose the latter so Madhur needed somebody to fill her shoes. The movie seems jinxed because even pregnant Ash had to leave it. If Kareena had done it, she would have definitely inched closer to her National Award dream.

Priyanka Chopra: Friends with Benefits

If we believe what Priyanka has to say, then we can safely say that she has never dated anyone in Bollywood. When she was a newcomer, the stories about her and playboy Akshay were too hard to ignore. She moved on and became a big star. Miss Chopra was quietly involved with Harry Baweja's son Hurman for nearly four years but they never made their feelings official. Love Story 2050 flopped and that marked the end of their relationship. She then got "too friendly" with Kaminey co-star Shahid Kapur. Again, she said "we are just good friends" and their blow-hot-blow-cold relationship lasted for more than two years. They have finally called it off and the former "friends" can barely stand each other. Moreover, Priyanka is also very good friends with Ranbir Kapoor. Wonder where this will go or will PC find comfort in the arms of her other "good friend" Gerard Butler who already has a huge crush on her?

Salman Khan: Frenemies or Guaranteed Blockbusters

Salman KhanSalman Khan has launched the careers of the likes of Katrina Kaif, Sneha Ullal, Zarine Khan, Sajid-Wajid, Amrita Kak, Himesh Reshammiya and others. He has fallen out with Shah Rukh Khan, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and Himesh and apparently has problems with Priyanka Chopra, Hrithik Roshan, and Ranbir Kapoor. He can make people's careers but it is very dangerous to get into his bad books. His films Wanted, Dabangg, and Ready have been very successful at the box office. Wanted was fun but Dabangg and Ready were quite mindless and repetitive. He has used the South-Indian formula too many times and even Bodyguard is a remake of a South-Indian film. He makes these films work but if he does it twice more and people will get bored. He needs a new formula.

Ranbir Kapoor: How To Make Everyone Fall In Love With You

Ranbir KapoorRanbir Kapoor has been linked with Sonam Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif, Nargis Fakhri, and Angela Jonsson. He is like any other young, charming, and handsome dude who likes being with women but his problem is that he is a movie-star and one of the hottest bachelors in the country. He doesn't know what to do with his Casanova image and he doesn't like it. Mom Neetu Kapoor thinks her son is the epitome of perfection. We agree.

Katrina Kaif: The Perfect Indian Girl

Katrina KaifThe voluptuous beauty goes on about her British social-activist mother and her Kashmiri father. It is surprising that she has not said a word about Kashmir's pressing issues. Nothing much is known about her father and his family and nobody has ever stepped up. Ayesha Shroff has said that she is not Indian at all and they simply concocted her name and background story when she came to India for Boom. Kat says she will not talk about her relationships till she is married, like a "good Indian girl!"

It is amazing that she never talks in Hindi. Today, she wants to behave like a "good Indian girl" and not wear a bikini on screen. It is no secret that she wore a black bikini in Boom. She also posed in bikinis for magazines. We don't like her hypocrisy. Had it not been for Salman Khan, she would have happily done movies like Boom and become an item girl.

Sonakshi Sinha: Everybody Loves Me or Being Your Perfect Weight

Sonakshi SinhaYou either hate her or you love her. Frankly, we don't understand the buzz around her. She is pretty, so what? She had just about five scenes in Dabangg. She is just one film old and has not made too many friends here. She is in the news all the time! Moreover, she has rubbed Katrina Kaif the wrong way! She has double standards as well. She says that she will not wear revealing clothes or do bold scenes because she comes from a "good and respectable family." So is she implying that other actresses have loose character and come from bad families? Just because she doesn't bare her cleavage, that doesn't mean she dresses conservatively. She wears backless, short dresses and some of her clothes are too tight. She says she is proud of being the size she is then why is she trying to lose weight? She isn't very confident about her body and that reflects in her tacky choice of clothes and make-up.

John Abraham will write How To Be Famous (Without Actually Doing Anything)

John AbrahamJohn Abraham has not a had a hit film since Dostana and New York (2009). Incidentally, he showed off his derriere in both the films. Those films worked but he was not the solo hero in either of them. In 7 Khoon Maaf, he hid his modesty with a guitar and a chair. He is neither an actor nor a bankable star but is still considered a heartthrob. He still has endorsements; own production house, and demands a very high fee. —HRM

Collin quits smoking

Collin FarrellActor Colin Farrell has finally managed to quit smoking.

The Irish actor, who was a chain-smoker, often wore a nicotine patch to curb his craving while filming on sets where smoking was banned but has now given up the habit completely.

"I was a 40-cigarette-a-day smoker, but I wasn't enjoying it. So, on my 34th birthday last year, I spent a day with a pack and consciously looked at every single puff until I smoked the last one at 11.55 that night," he said.

"I did a whole ritual thing by writing a letter to tobacco, giving it as much significance as I possibly could. I'm done with it," he added. — IANS
