Dehradun, June 29
Four more persons, who are reportedly the acquaintances of high-profile ministers and MLAs, have vacated the rooms of a guest house of the Irrigation Department after occupying those for four years. Still three more occupants continue to retain the rooms at the guest house though the department has begun charging Rs 80 per day rent from the occupants.

It is ironical that those who have vacated the rooms did not pay the pending dues of the past four years. The department is not pursuing the matter either.

Mushirrul Hasan, Chief of Yamuna Projects, said: “We feel greatly relieved that at least these people have vacated the guest house, which at one point of time seemed most unlikely. The process to recover the pending dues can be initiated later on.” The unpaid amount is expected to run into lakhs of rupees.

RC Saxena, Superintending Engineer, said: “We are charging a fee of Rs 80 per day from the occupants and in case they extend their stay after a week, they will have to pay Rs 120 per day as per the rules, though we are compelling them to vacate.”

Saxena thanked the employees’ association, which stood its ground on the issue of the allotment of more rooms to the personal staff of a cabinet minister, and the media, which highlighted the issue.

Social Welfare Minister Matbar Singh Kandari had to face the maximum heat on the issue. He assured the media that he had directed the Irrigation Department not to provide rooms of the guest house to his people or other politicians free of cost. It was after the publication of reports in newspapers, six more vacated their rooms in the guest house, of whom two came back to occupy the rooms, asking for a relaxation of one more week each.

Ecstatic over the positive outcome, president of the Employees Association of the Irrigation Department Shekharanand Raturi has demanded that personnel of other departments who are staying at the guest house be evicted as well, as guest house has been built exclusively for the employees of Irrigation Department. “It is after the state was formed and Dehradun was made the provisional capital, personnel of many departments occupied rooms in the guest houses of the Irrigation Department. They pay a meagre rent of Rs 10 a month or so. Our own staff had to stay in hotels when they come to Dehradun on official or even personal visit. Now, we want them to be evicted as well,” he said.

Officials told to make list of missing MC files
Our Correspondent

Mussoorie, June 29
Work on finding the missing or misplaced files of the local Municipal Council (MC) office today picked up pace with executive officer Rohtash Sharma directing the officials concerned to prepare a list of the missing files (around 10 in number) and locate those on an urgent basis.

Sharma, while speaking to The Tribune, said the search for the files was being conducted on the direction of MC President OP Uniyal, who had raised the issue at the board meeting yesterday.

According to sources, copies of important agreements reached between the MC and certain hoteliers, who own hotels on the Mall Road, have gone missing, making it difficult for the MC to carry out its routine work.

Uniyal said the MC had given permission to private builders to construct hotels on the Mall Road with the precondition that they would keep their terrace open for public use, but the hoteliers had shut the entrance to their terraces by installing huge gates. The sources said files relating to St George’s College and Rickshaw Stand at Kulri Bazar were also in missing.

Bridge over Aglar in state of neglect
Ajay Ramola

Mussoorie, 29 June
The bridge over Aglar River on the Delhi-Yamnotri highway, 25 km from here, is in a state of dilapidation, thanks to the apathy of the authorities concerned.

The bridge, which was built in the 1960s, is in a poor condition and posing a threat to the lives of commuters who cross it daily. It is the only bridge on NH-123 that connects Dehradun, Mussoorie, Tehri, Yamnotri etc. However, both the government and the administration have failed to take any initiative to get it repaired.

Both pillars on which the structure rests have given way due to incessant rains and the fear of the entire structure caving in at time has commuters worried. Railings on both sides of the bridge have damaged beyond repair, putting the lives of commuters at risk.

Although a new bridge adjacent to the old structure has been proposed and work on cutting mountain sides is going on for several years, not much headway has been made so far.

On the contrary, the construction work has created more problems for villagers residing downstream. The debris has accumulated in the river resulting in a huge lake formation stretching till Bandar Kot village in the Jaunpur block.

Disaster, Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Khajan Das said the condition of the bridge was a cause for concern. He said senior officials of NH-123 had been directed to make some alternative arrangement of repairing the bridge and remove the debris from the riverbed to avoid any untoward incident.
