Name is the game!
More than the genre of music they play; more than their background, even more than their experiences around the world, it's their onstage name that people get inquisitive about. Kate and Alice, celebrity DJs from Russia introduce themselves as Rich-Bi**h! And when they do that, they are asked to reconfirm. "It's fun to see people react to our onstage name and our purpose of choosing a wacky one like this is justified,” says Kate, who was in Chandigarh with Alice to mix music at Kava on Saturday night.
Kate adds that in for a DJ, it's important to get registered with people. "Rich Bi**h helps us do that. If we had introduced ourselves in the club culture by our actual names, it wouldn't have been the same." But then do music lovers take them seriously? Alice takes the lead this time, “When we began, there were hardly any women in this profession, even back home in Russia. We learnt the art of music mixing and composing on our own and it was a huge challenge." Their hardwork bore fruit when they got to play at the biggest club in Russia. "Our next destination is the most popular club of Bahrain. We will be the in-house DJs there." However, they didn't limit themselves to mixing and playing music at the clubs. For Kate and Alice, the next obvious step was producing music. "But before we took to that, we ensured we were as good as the best DJs in Russia," adds Kate. Their debut album, Curse of Love, has hit the music stores around the world. "It's already a huge hit in Russia and is played on all the major radio stations." They will also play the track at Kava, in addition to mix of all forms of music, ranging from rock, hip-hop, commercial to in-house. "An intelligent DJ is one who is flexible with the music forms. In India, music means Bollywood. We have done our homework and will play a bit of Bollywood here," Alice chips in. As for their favourite flick, it is Kabir Khan's New York. This is their second trip to India and they are enjoying the experience. Says Kate, "It's surprising to see that India has such a thriving party culture. Mumbai, Delhi, Goa are the party hubs here." And what about Chandigarh? "It has its own share of clubs and lounges. The interiors of Kava are wonderful and match the standards of any famous night club in Delhi," answers Kate, as she takes on to the console and introduces the duo - Rich Bi**ch ashima@tribunemail.com |

Freeloader at work?
They live in a different space and 'tomorrow' is the only day in the year that appeals to them. Believe it or not, studies prove they have the capability of making or breaking a complete set up at workplace. We call these people lazy bones. They can sit through an entire winter and not worry an iota about what they would do in the summer. The good part is you don't need to scout for these 'special' people, they are found anywhere-slumping in the swivel chair in a busy office, pretending to be busy or slouching on a sofa at home. What you wouldn't know is that lazy disposition not only reduces the morale at the workplace but also the effectiveness of the team as per an Australian psychologist. The people can also drag the team down, reducing its satisfaction and performance level. Turn around and see you can spot any lazy bone. So, how would you deal with such a colleague at work? "Lazy bones are a prominent feature of an organisation. In fact there can be far too many at a workplace," shares Dheeraj Saxena, an insurance agent with a Chandigarh-based bank. "Either you ignore these lazy bones or you do something about it. The best way is to bring them to book whenever possible and not let them get away with it. Why should the team suffer because some people who shirk work unabashedly?" Ideally speaking there is no cure for laziness nevertheless there are certain things that help. Harbir Singh, assistant technical advisor, Beta Lonics, Ludhiana, gives us some quick tips. "First zero in on this sect who have the capability to work but owing to their nature they wouldn't. Secondly, keep these people occupied with work, especially field work. Thirdly, ensure that you bind them in some time frame work. Ask for the results of the work once they claim to be through with it. Lastly, organise a contest to felicitate the laziest worker of the team. I bet no lazy worker would want this kind of recognition." While you are busy sorting out which lazy worker in your workplace needs this kind of treatment, the study conducted by the Australian psychologist revels that performance of a team can go down by three per cent if the lazy workers allowed to go on at their own pace. Besides, the efficient workers in a team wouldn't want to suffer because of some non performers. Agrees Umesh Verma, a data analyst with a stock exchange firm, who says he has suffered due to such non workers, lazy people in his office. "I am a team leader, which makes me answerable to my boss. But because of two lazy people in my team, everyone had to settle with low appraisals of salary." Now you know whom to look for at your workplace, lazy bones and ensure you don't suffer because they are on Facebook 24X7, instead of making data sheets. |
Visual Impact
Shah Rukh Khan has left no stone unturned to make his upcoming venture Ra.One look like a slick Hollywood sci-film. A whooping Rs 100 crore to give the international standard visual effects! We catch up from the last word, visual effects. It is okay to say like borrowed scripts, we are now borrowing the 'effects' also from Hollywood. But as long as they can the cinema viewing experience, trust us we are not cribbing about it. Neither is Soumyadip Chakraborty, compositing supervisor, Eyeqube in Chanadigarh for a two day workshop on the actual process of creating complex visual effects. Frameboxx Animation & Visual Effects organised this one of its kind workshop where almost 200 participants from the city had a 'real' feel of visual effects and how they are added to movies to enhance the film watching experiencing.
Soumyadip Chakraborty comes from a company that has delivered over 3000 shots for films, Aladin, Drona and Tron :Legacy. He sees the market for visual effects growing with a scope to do a lot more. "Audiences find Hollywood movies interesting because of their visual effects, which is why now Bollywood is bringing the same experience through visual effects. Because, it enhances the cinematography of a film, movie makers seem to be more interested in it," he says. Cars flying over the head, a leap from here, thunder there…visual effects can make a helluva difference. Bollywood movie Avatar said it all. But there are some challenges to cover. "Yes," agrees Soumyadip, "we don't have technical sound people in the industry who can give us visual effects. In addition to this, putting all the different shots together is also a huge challenge for people in the field of visual effects." Doesn't the word 'software' reduce the burden? "Loads, Soumyadip nods in approval. Thankfully in India we have the latest software required for the visual effects. At Frameboxx Animation & Visual Effects they teach all kinds of software required for visual effects." jasmine@tribunemail.com |
A movement called THEATRE
To create a theatre culture in the otherwise prospering city of India, Chandigarh, is what Kuldip Sharma, director, Tagore Theatre-18 is aiming at. "A theatre has a culture of its own. A visit to Prithvi, Mumbai, confirms that," says Sharma, who wants the same for Tagore Theatre. Starting from the basics, changing rooms and proper lighting in make-up rooms, a book store-cum-reading room and wooden sets for plays, Sharma has already initiated the changes. And it's not only cosmetic changes that he's aiming that. Fuelled by success of kids' theatre workshop earlier this month, Sharma is planning another one for mommies. "I want to make this theatre an activity hub. We have been giving empty space to artistes, at the back end of the theatre, for rehearsals," says Sharma, who has received a good response for it. Another idea is to upgrade the present café that brings in more people, where art lovers can chat over a coffee. "Theatre helps in more ways than one. My effort is to make its benefits available to a larger section of the society," he says. For Kuldeep Sharma, a known face from the city, acting happened by chance. Part of hit serials like Flop Show, Ulta Pulta, Waqt Ki Raftar, and movies Maachis, Dev D and Mahaul Theek Hai, Sharma had never tried his hand at acting in a school or college. "I was a cricketer to start with. A chance role in a play Joru Ka Ghulam fetched so much appreciation that theatre took over." With more than a decade's time in Mumbai, busy acting for stage and in films, Sharma, returned to city and had plans to go back to Mumbai when this new assignment happened. "I consider it as an opportunity to give back to theatre, which has given me so much," he shares. His most ambitious plan is to have a theatre festival themed around Tagore. "For the first time in Chandigarh, we will have 10 theatre groups staging plays based on Rabindranath Tagore," shares Sharma passionately. Paying tribute to multi-faceted Gurudev, Tagore theatre plans to pay tribute to him by July end. "We plan to hold Rabindra sangeet, dance and painting events as well. "Hopefully, we will have a dance drama from Santiniketan as part of the festival," shares Sharma. mona@tribunemail.com |
Playing Punjabi
She shot to fame as plain Jane Jassi's sophisticated rival in popular TV show Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin but actress Rakshanda Khan is all set for an image makeover with her character of a loud Punjabi woman in Ammaji Ki Galli.
Rakshanda is known for her controlled performance in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Jassi. This is why the 36-year-old, who is making a comeback of sorts with the Sab TV comedy show, took up the challenge to play a character, who is alien to her personality. "It is a complete 180 degree turn in my career graph with this character. I was scared initially. I had no reference point as it is not even connected with the kind of roles I have done in the past," said Khan. The actress, who is also famous for her sartorial choices onscreen, has decided to go loud by wearing bright coloured patiyala salwars to play Parminder. "I faced loads of difficulties. She's not your particular Tulsi or Parvati bhabi. Parminder has her temper." The small screen is witnessing the return of some of the old faces after being dominated by new talent for a while and Rakshanda considers it a good sign both for the actors and for the shows. "Somehow I feel that the new generation actors are pretty much momentary stars. They are like the bubbles. When the bubble gets burst, they disappear. Somehow the older batch of actors seem to have created a long lasting bond with the audience. Even today you have specially written characters for Farida Jalal, Ronit Roy and Apara Mehta," said she. "Drama serials are making people cry from ages. Time has come when people want to watch something light on their television sets after coming back home. When it comes to comedy there is 120 different sequences. Seeing the particular character you don't feel monotonous," added Rakshanda. The actress, who kept away from TV for almost two years, says her event management company kept her busy. "The kind of roles that came my way did not excite me much. So I kept myself busy with by event management company 'Celebrity locker entertainment'," Rakshanda said. — PTI |

Time to tie the knot
'Knot', a good idea Sonam Kapoor: She has not proven her mettle as an actress (we do not think she has acting prowess to begin with). Miss Kapoor is a fashionista and she has kept her relationship with director Punit Malhotra under wraps for a while. She is really happy with him and he treats her like a princess. So tying the knot with him and continuing modeling or acting after that would be a good idea. How about getting hitched! Esha Deol: Her career will not gain momentum with Tell Me Oh Khuda. Her parents want her to get married. She should find a rich and good-looking businessman and get hitched. Then she can be a good housewife and so some charity. Still single! Preity Zinta: The dimpled beauty is in her mid-30s now and her career will not be re-launched, no matter which film she does. She and Ness made a lovely couple and she was classy enough for him and his family. She should find another classy businessman or mend ways with Ness. Her biological clock is ticking… Marriage, no bar Rani Mukerji: She has made a splendid comeback and can continue doing films post marriage as well. She is 33 so getting hitched would be a good idea. In any case, her rumoured beau Aditya Chopra is not getting any younger either. She will be in demand post marriage as well because she is a terrific actress. For daughters' sake Sushmita Sen: The former beauty queen has no career, no production house, no relationship, and her daughters could do with a male presence in their lives. It is high time she found a reliable man and made him hers till death do them part. Of after effects Tabu: The National Award winning actress is 40 years old and quite enigmatic. We know men would kill to have her. So why is she still single? She is choosy about her films so getting married will have a miniscule effect on her professional attachments. Time to say ‘I DO’ Vidya Balan: The Tam-Bram beauty is lusted after by every hot-blooded man in India. She believes in romance and love so why is she still not taken? Apparently, she is dating Siddharth Roy Kapur of UTV. The desi beauty is in her 30s and marriage would only do her good. — HRM |
Big B chooses to keep his language clean! Abuses and cuss words seem to be the flavour of Bollywood this season! While actors these days do not hesitate in hurling abuses in every other line or through songs, Big B takes a rather unusual way! The superstar, who will be seen doing thoda action, thoda Jackson in his forthcoming Bbuddah has found a unique way of abusing on screen! The latest promo of the film showcases Big B using the word BEEP instead of expletives whenever he feels like doing so. "Aye baut bada beep hai yaar tu" is what he is heard saying in the promo! In fact, he also justifies this new lingo through a dialogue in the film that goes as…"Jabhi mera mann gaali deno ko karta hai to main beep bolta hu. Us se do cheez hota hai. Ek toh mera zabaan saaf rehta hai aur doosra, saamne waali ki izzat ka beep lag jaata hai." (One, it helps keep my vocabulary clean and second, it effectively puts down the one in front of me.) Mr Bachchan says, "Just as I have always been leery of explicit love scenes, I do not care for explicit language on screen". So when Mr Bachchan refused to use cuss words in Bbuddah even when the situation required him to do so, Director Puri Jagannadh came up with this idea! —HRM |

The 46-year-old has said that he has always had a fascination for Indian movies and now he'd like to star in one, reported a publication. "I would love to sing and dance in a Bollywood movie. I think they're great, the theatricality of them. I love the presentational aspect of the storytelling as a fable.

Work it out in 10 minutes
Sachin Kalra If your days are packed with deadlines, family commitments, friends etc and often feel overwhelmed as you miss the exercise you are supposed to get, then don't! For many of us, finding the time to fit exercise into our busy schedule is not easy. If you find it impossible to spare even 30 minutes a day for a workout, don't give up. You can achieve your daily quota by doing three shorter bursts of exercise lasting 10 minutes or more. The trick is to use whatever time you do have in a productive manner and to focus on working harder than usual i.e. with higher intensity. Here are some excellent options for those who are short on time but want to maintain their health. Sprint free
The advantages of sprinting are not restricted to enjoying the speed and stamina. If your time is tight, a quick run can help you tone up, boost your energy levels and provide you with an enthusiastic workout. The best thing about sprinting is that it does not take long to show results, reduces fat quickly and that gives you more incentive to do it regularly. You also have an option to do it either indoors on a treadmill and outdoors. Add intervals to keep it effective and easy. To begin with, Run at a high speed for 1 minute, then speed walk for 1 minute. Repeat this cycle until your 10 minutes are up. And as your endurance increases, make walking time less. Power walk
Walking is probably the world's most popular form of exercise. It is free; it can be done almost anywhere at almost any time and by almost anyone. Walking gives you all the benefits of aerobic exercise - it lowers the resting heart rate, improves the body's ability to consume oxygen during exertion, reduces blood pressure, increases the efficiency of the heart and lungs, helps burn excess calories, tones and shapes the legs, reduces stress and mental fatigue. To make your work out more effective go in for speed or power walking. Speed or power walking involves walking as fast as you can. To do this take shorter, quicker steps. Arms are bent sharply at the elbows and should be swing in a brisk rhythm. An interesting fact about speed walking is that when you want to go faster, just increase the swing of your bent arms - your legs will automatically follow! To qualify as power walking as opposed to jogging or running, at least one foot must be in contact with the ground at all times. It burns approximately the same calories as running, yet it is much easier on the body. Jump the rope
Maybe you only think of jumping rope as a childhood pastimes, but this aerobic activity is a fun way to burn calories. Skipping is good for the heart, bones, flexibility and co-ordination. In addition, it is inexpensive: all you need is a skipping rope, a good pair of trainers and a safe space. Depending on the intensity of your workout, skipping will typically burn between 70 and 110 calories in a 10-minute session. To begin with, jump at a pace that is comfortable for you and slowly increase your pace over time. Be a jumping jack
This exercise needs no introduction or instructions on how to perform it. Jumping jacks are one of the most known calisthenics exercises. It is an excellent way to get into shape. Jumping jacks work your shoulders, back, thighs and calves. They are also good for your heart. As you become more fit, perform jumping jacks faster and for a greater length of time. Take the stairs
Climbing up the stairs and then coming back down is an excellent cardio exercise. Slimbing the stairs uses the muscles of the legs, in particular the quadriceps (front of the thighs) and the buttocks. It can be an intense activity both for the heart and leg muscles because you are carrying your body weight against gravity. You can try this convenient workout almost anywhere, whether you are at home or at the office. All you need is a staircase and comfortable shoes. It is low impact and safe for the knee joints for so long as you follow the guidelines of not doing too much too soon and you do not have any existing knee problems that may get aggravated. Jog on the spot
It is a simple yet effective exercise and is great for weight loss. Jogging on the spot is good for improving blood circulation by raising your heart rate and for toning up leg and tummy muscles. It can either be done with your hands on your hips or by pumping your arms in time with your legs as you would if you were jogging outside. To make this simple movement more challenging just bring your knees up to your chest as you continue to jog on the spot. You can also try butt kicks i.e. kicking the butts while jogging in place. Dance to fitness
Dancing is great fun and good exercise. Whether it is hip-hop, bhangra, belly dancing or salsa, dancing is a popular and fun way to get your heart pumping. You can do it right in the comfort of your own home, or join a class. Dance keeps your mind challenged by mixing the steps and rhythms and it never feels boring. So, go ahead, have a good time and let the beat guide you. And when you're done with the fun, you'll have worked up a sweat and burned off some calories. Paddle away the tyres
According to many fitness experts, cycling is one of the best forms of exercise. It offers numerous benefits. It gives the body a fast and energetic workout and targets the thighs, calf muscles and the pelvis region. There is also relatively less stress on the knees and ankles while cycling as compared to other activities like running. According to your preference and limitations, you can choose to exercise either outdoors or indoors. Both have their positives. If you are feeling creative, make your own workout using some of the activities listed above. Form a circuit and do all the activities without a break in between. An example could be -1 minute brisk walk or march in place, 1 minute jumping jacks, 1 minute light jog, 1 minute sprint, 1 minute power walk, 1 minute light jog, 1 minute climbing stairs, 1 minute skipping, 1 minute sprint and 1 minute brisk walk to cool down. If you have prior knowledge of strength training you can add a strength training circuit too, involving lunges, squats, dead lift, chin-up's, dips, leg curls, etc; which you can do 2-3 times a week. kalrasachin@hotmail.com |

Deepak Verma The world has always been about the survival of fittest. And the best way to survive today is through advertising and marketing, either through print, electronic media or changing mobile technology. Yes, mobile marketing is the new buzzword. Mobile companies have a greater challenge at hand, other than luring customers into buying mobiles, they also have to rake their minds with new applications. For instance, for the launch of a product you would get the image on the cell phone, which will be carried forward through interactive session. This is the latest in mobile marketing innovation." From voice texts, voice tags, pictorial texts, the world of mobile marketing has only increased and gone better. "Dude what's the plan for tonight?"
"Let's meet somewhere and party hard, but no girlfriends or wives allowed." This is what guys want now. With their bindaas and casual attitude, guys now want some time off for just themselves and their buddies away from the prying eyes of wives or girlfriends. "It is needed in this fast paced life today. At times we get tired of the continuous demands made my boss, family and girlfriends. So, one need sometime for himself to just relax," says Vishal Kohli, a software engineer in Infosys. What can be more relaxing than partying out with your best buddies? Even if it's raining girls, sometimes guys just want to have fun. No matter whether it's a beer party or watching a match together on LCD, these alone times are what they crave for. "This go-alone funda not only relaxes us but takes us back to the time when life was all about having fun with closest buddies," adds Vishal. Who can forget the recent bollywood flick 'pyaar ka punchnama' where life shown is all about three friends and the life they share. However, with due respect to girls, boys have valid reasons for asking for alone time. "One doesn't have to worry about the time nor about the constant nagging as girls are not allowed. There's no need to watch the drinks nor would one hear the curses muttered while watching a soccer match," quips Deexit Sharma, freelance web designer. Apart from watching soccer and gulping jugs of beer, Vikas Saini, a doctor has much more valid and sound point for having only boys' party. "In such parties there's no one to judge you. Your moves are not under scrutiny. However, not to forget the time to share secrets." What sort of secrets? Laughs Vikas, "Oh there are many but it should better be left unpublished." However, if you think that boys need time just for fun sake you are wrong. Guys, who appear to be rock solid and devoid of emotions mostly cry their heart out in front of their buddies. "It's during our alone time that we talk about our problems," says Dheeraj Sharma, a merchant navy officer. And why are girls not allowed to see the emotional side? "We don't mind sharing our problems with our girlfriends but sometimes we want logical conclusions based on judgement, and only guys are capable of doing that. Moreover, just like girls we should also be allowed to have our soul friends who know us inside and out," he adds. Hail male bonding! |
Love your body
Ninety-seven per cent of women say 13 negative things about their body every day, such as: 'I hate my thighs', 'I hate my stomach' or 'I'm ugly', a recent US survey has revealed. The first thing women notice about other women is how fat they are, a UK study of 2,000 women found.
Ninety per cent of women aged 15 to 64 want to change at least one aspect of their appearance, most of all their body weight, according to an International survey. n Parents' body image: Many parents are dieting and saying skinny is better. n Mixed messages Education: about the difference between healthy and unhealthy foods can actually trigger eating disorders in kids. n Models in media research shows the more women see pictures of perfect women in the media, the more they believe they should look like that. n It may not be weight that is causing women to feel unhappy or unsatisfied, but it's the part that can be perceived as the easiest to control. — ANI |
Balance it out
Renee Singh Ah! Wish I could just chill out! I am feeling tired listless and fatigued! Life isn't fun anymore! Can someone understand why! Gosh! I need help. Stress! This is the way our bodies and minds react to something which upsets our normal balance in life. A major indication of increased stress is an escalation of one's pulse rate. However a normal pulse rate does not necessarily mean that you are not stressed. Constant aches and pains palpations, anxiety and thoughts crying, overeating, underrating and frequent infections. These are signs to show you, that you are suffering from stress. Actually anything that overwhelms us can cause us to experience stress. Each one of us reacts differently to stress. Many of us even at the most ordinary decisions get stressed seemingly insurmountable difficulties. Deciding what to have for dinner or what to buy at a store seem to be monumental dilemmas. Others thrive under this kind of stress by becoming highly productive being driven by the force of pressure. Research shows that women with children have higher levels of stress related hormones in their blood. This doesn't mean that women with no kids don't stress, it's just a variation of degrees. Beat the stress in your life: Find simple and inexpensive ways to reduce your stress levels. n Cut out artificial stress reducers such as, alcohol, coffee. These just suppress your symptoms and actually increase anxiety. n Make your own mental space Your environment strongly influences your sense of well being. Make your immediate surroundings pleasant and harmonious, home, garden, work space. n Deflect negative energy by thinking positive and feeling it too. Hot siren Sambhavna Seth who was recently seen in Khatron Ke Khiladi Torchaar on Colors was caught in a three car pileup at Lokhandwala, Mumbai. The impact was so bad that front of her car is totally damaged. Apparently repairs will cost a huge amount so she is now planning to sell the car and buy a new one. Sambhavna "I was driving and it was raining pretty heavily. I was driving slowly because roads get very slippery in the initial rains. Suddenly the car in front of me stopped. I did brake instantly but my car kept skidding and went headlong into the rear of the other car. When I got off the car I realised that other car has had an accident with one other car in front of it. All this happened so quickly. But I had to leave the spot immediately because a crowd had started gathering and had started requesting me for autographs and photographs. I was so angry but then it all turned very amusing." After looking at the front of her car, she was happy that she was behind the wheel of a sturdy car like Honda City. Else she would definitely got major injuries. As it is, unlike her car, she escaped with minor cuts and bruises because the car took the brunt of the impact. — HRM |
