Breeding the best
Manpriya Khurana

Loyal companion: DJ Cherry with his Mylo

When eight out of ten people are taking an Alsatian or a Labrador or a Pomeranian (and now a pug) out for a walk, there's reason why you'd want to flaunt an out-of-the-ordinary canine counterpart. The breeds may have been rare, but the preference for rare breeds has never been a rare phenomenon! After all, it's flattering to be flooded with questions on your pet, right from its breed to its name.

"We have all grown up with the regular Labradors or the German Shepherds, but nowadays youngsters don't want a common breed. They prefer something they can really flaunt," Dr APS Toor of Animal Kingdom, sums up the psychology. He adds, "There are a total of 106 registered breeds. In Chandigarh you must be having only about 50." Talk of rarity! Shares DJ Cherry, "I have an American miniature Schnauzer called Mylo and probably, it's the only one-of-its-kind in Chandigarh." Even though the joys of a pet are no way restricted to the rare tag! He adds, "It's a very, very playful dog. It's small in size but dominating. There was no intention to own an uncommon breed." Nods Usha R Sharma, IAS officer, "It's a beautiful feeling; even humans cannot match up.” Like we said, breed no bar! Nevertheless, her four Chinese Pekingese have quite a history to them too. She shares, "It's a royal breed from China because only the royalty could keep it. Now, it's popular but in Chandigarh I was the first one to propagate it." No wonder, for the owners, rare is just another adjective to the description…beautiful, intelligent, loyal…and of course rare!

Opines Sanjay Dhiman, a pet shop owner, "In India, now you get just about any conceivable breed because people import them. They are difficult to get, but not impossible.” So they are all there, even if they are rare. Even the likes of Lhasa Apso, Komondor, Bedlington Terrier or a Puli… the list is not exhaustive. Opines Adhiraj Thind, college student, proud owner of a St. Bernard, Scooby and a Great Dane called Bruno, "There are platforms like dog shows, where people not just come to know of such breeds but also like to flaunt them." Well, he himself is a regular too. "St. Bernard was used by Swiss monks to rescue people from snow blizzards whereas Great Dane is more of a one-man dog. They're originally from Denmark and were used as hunting dogs."

Happy family: (Top) Usha R Sharma with her Pekingese; and Aditya Verma with Alex and Dollar

At times, the characteristic traits don't end there. Shares Neilu Grewal, proprietor, Innoxa, of her English and French Bull Dogs, Missy, Momo and Mr Muscle.

"The English Bull Dogs are very passionate, a little dumb, but very playful.” Whatever the traits, walking home to a pair is a pleasure. Ask Aditya Verma and his brother on Alex and Dollar. "Dollar is a Labrador but Alex is a Canadian Shepherd, I'd say he is the only of its kind in Chandigarh. "

He adds, "Its rarity was one of the initial reasons we got it. It comes from minus 30 degree temperature, cannot stay without AC and is very playful. Now, he's family and loved like anybody else." As Neilu adds, "Whatever the breed, a pet lover will always love his pets."

Live to eat

They say the way to a person's heart is through stomach and while everyone craves for yummy, mouth smacking food, some enjoy cooking themselves and some love ordering meals. No matter what, we all have our own favourite comfort food. We spoke to few actors about their comfort food and what dish is closest to their heart.

Vivian D'sena

I am very fond of khichdi as it's taste is very yummy. It is easy to make and very light to digest. I love cooking and I feel cooking is great stress buster. If I feel very stressed out, I end up cooking.

Sara Khan

I relish sea-food of any and every kind. I am completely mad about prawns, lobsters etc. I love cooking a lot and for me, it is a stress buster. I cook when I can or else I do order if I am tired post shooting.

Karan Mehra

I love Indian vegetarian food the most. Whenever I am at home, Nisha and I try our hand at cooking. We create our own dishes in our own style. We don't order food usually as we love to make food at home.

Sukirti Khandpal

My favourite comfort food is chocolate truffle pastry as it cheers me up totally. I love cooking and I cook depending on my mood. If I have the time, I cook systematically or end up ordering food. I learnt cooking from my mother, who is too good a cook.

Soumya Seth

I love curd with sugar. Cooking for me is not a remedy for bad mood or time pass but a passion. Cooking at home depends on my mood and time. I enjoy making new dishes especially Chinese. I really don't believe in take away food as I feel is not very good for health.

Gaurav Khanna

I love cooking and my favourite comfort food is omelette. I like to cook all the North Indian dishes which are spicy. I feel for me cooking myself is a necessity as I stay alone.

Here comes the Badshah…

WELL RECEIVED: Shah Rukh Khan

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan is truly Bollywood's badshah and his welcome at Toronto's Fairmont Royal York hotel was proof enough! As around a hundred fans, who waited to catch a glimpse of the actor at the hotel lobby Friday morning, the actor broke into an impromptu little jig despite his knee injury — turning his entry into a mini red carpet walk!

Looking dapper in a casual jacket, jeans and sunglasses, the actor arrived at the hotel amid much cheer, applause, and shout outs from girls who went "SRK, come here, SRK come here". Ever since the IIFA kickstarted, fans have been awaiting Shah Rukh's arrival, and they didn't want to miss it for anything.

Natasha Khalfan, a crazy SRK fan took an off from work, and reached the hotel at 8 am even when she knew he won't arrive before 10 am.

"I have taken a day off just to see Shah Rukh. I have been following him on Twitter, and he has been writing about his flight and his injury. Whoever wanted to miss the chance of seeing him! Oh my god...I just saw SRK!," said an over-excited Khan fan .

"I even said 'I love you' to him, and can you imagine...he looked at me, and smiled back. Oh my god! It's the most precious moment of my life," said the recently married Khalfan, who tells that her husband proposed to her Kuch Kuch Hota Hai style.

Gujarati girl Viral Paun was another fan, who had been awaiting Shah Rukh's visit, and says she didn't sleep at all the last night because she feared missing Shah Rukh's arrival.

There were other young girls - Riya Oommen and Shikha Jagwani from Mississauga, who felt "luckiest" to reach the hotel at the same time as Shah Rukh even when they didn't know about his flight timings. "What a perfect timing!" The die-hard Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge fans screamed excitedly, and added: "This is the closest as it could get! We were just in time to see him. He is the most talented actor!"

Even the security personnel had a hard time managing the crowds. "Many actors have come ever since the IIFA kickstarted. But managing Shah Rukh Khan has been the hardest!" said a hotel official.

Shah Rukh has returned to IIFA after six years, and he will be performing at the IIFA awards night after seven years. — IANS

Good looking film

COOL COMPANY: cast of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar were keen on having Imran Khan and Ranbir Kapoor in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara but the two refused to be a part of the film.

After that, Hrithik Roshan and Abhay Deol were cast in it. The film looks good and we are looking forward to it.

Preity might fill in for Ash

Girl Power: Kareena Kapoor

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is pregnant. This means that she cannot do Rajkumar Santoshi's film with her husband Abhishek.

Preity Zinta, her friend and Abhi's co-star in films such as Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and KANK, is likely to fill in for her.

Saif turns zombie

NEW ROLE: Saif Ali Khan

Saif Ali Khan might play a zombie in horror-comedy directed by Krishna DK and Raj Nidimoru.

He is producing the film.

His sister Soha’s boyfriend will play an integral part in the film titled Go Goa Gone.

Kiss stays

FUN TIME: Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif

Hrithik Roshan's steamy kiss with Katrina Kaif in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara will not be toned down or deleted from the film.

It is three-minutes long and will be shown in all its glory. Neither Hrithik nor Katrina had a problem with it.

Sporty Bebo

Kareena Kapoor is becoming everyone's sweetheart. In praise of the stunner, Shah Rukh Khan posted this on his Twitter page: "Finished the last few bits and pieces of RA.One with Kareena. Want to thank her for working so hard and fast...she was such a sport. Hope we haven't tanned her too much in the hot sun."

Delhi belly is for adults: Aamir Khan
Aamir who has got people ecstatic with his over-the-top item number shares his take on the controversial film

You wanted a heroine for the item song in Delhi Belly but now you have done the song yourself with Anusha Dandekar.

Yes, I wanted a heroine but none of them answered my calls and it became very difficult to match schedules. So I decided to do it myself. Kiran wanted me to do the song and you guys (the media) had also suggested that I do the song. It is the first time that I have done an item song in my career and I had a lot of fun going all out with the steps and look. Audiences last saw me properly in 3 Idiots and my next film will not release till next year so this is my way of giving back to my audiences and fans. Anusha is in the song because she has a role in the film.

People have problems with DK Bose, especially Anubhav Sinha, the director
of Ra.One.

I see nothing wrong with DK Bose. I am not removing it from the film because it is a good song and captures the spirit of the film. Why should I remove it then? The Censors have passed it for television. If one doesn't like the song, one switches the channel. Neither I nor my production house believes in becoming famous or gaining publicity by targeting other people's movies or songs. Likewise, we don't pay attention to people who seek publicity by criticising other people's work.

Amitabh Bachchan is also not happy with the use of expletives in today's films. His film is releasing alongside your production.

Well, in that case there is only one thing I can do: bhag bhag DK Bose , DK Bose, DK Bose, bhag bhag! (Laughs) To please him, I will take this new item song video and show it to him! I hope he likes it!

I have seen some of the promos of Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap and they are good. I wish him all the success in the world. If my film becomes a super-hit, then his film should become a super-duper hit!

Who do you want to show this video to? Whose feedback are you awaiting?

I want everybody in the industry to see the video and I hope that audiences love it too. I will send copies to all my friends. I am looking forward to Salman's (Khan) feedback because he is dabanng (fearless) and a close friend of mine. I want to know his reaction to my video because he has always done things his way. He is a way better item boy than I am!

Are there two versions of Delhi Belly? You are completely okay with the film being given an 'adult' certificate?

Yes, the original film is in Hindi and English because we all speak a mix of the two languages. In the other version, the English dialogues will be dubbed in Hindi.

From the very beginning, we have known that the film is for adults. It is an adult caper and the language in the film is filthy. We applied for an adult certificate and got one without any cuts. The film is for adults and for youth that like cheeky humour. It is a light-hearted and fun film that will be enjoyed by people who aren't too serious. Actually, being crazy and doing crazy things is part of our culture so I don't know why people are making a fuss around the movie. People make mistakes in life and shit happens! We all do crazy things on days like Holi and other festivals. All our promos have said that the film is for adults. In the new promo with the boys and me, some words have been beeped.

Do you have an extended role in Delhi Belly? Will you an Imran work together? When do you start shooting for Dhoom 3?

In Delhi Belly, I only have this song and no scenes. Imran and I will share the stage sometime soon. Shooting for Dhoom 3 begins in January 2012.

Winds of change
Indian films are sound technically but need to develop content wise
Deepa Mehta
BOLD DIRECTOR: Deepa Mehta

Indian-Canadian filmmaker feels that Indian cinema is doing well technically but it is yet to improve its content."No doubt, Indian cinema is a mass entertainer and has improved a lot technically but it is yet to develop content wise," says Mehta.

The Oscar-nominated director, who has been quite controversial back home because of her elements series Fire, Earth and Water, hopes that Ontario government's involvement in hosting the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards in Toronto will be a big boost to the business of cinema.

"As IIFA awards are being held here, it is definitely going to boost the business between the Indian and Canadian entrepreneurs," Mehta said. "Since it has got the support of Ontario government, it has attracted a lot of attention, which is not only going to help the Indian business but also the Canadian business," said the director.

Mehta is currently working on the post production of her screen adaptation of Midnight's Children, Salman Rushdie's Booker-prize winning book. With a host of Indian and foreign stars, the film set just after India's Independence in 1947, is director's most ambitious project till date. Rushdie has co-written the script with Mehta.

The film, titled 'Winds of Change', would be released in 2012 in which British Indian actor Satya Bhabhab would play the lead role of Saleem Sinai. It also stars Shriya Saran, Seema Biswas, Anupam Kher, Siddarth Narayan, Rahul Bose, Soha Ali Khan, Shahana Goswami and Darsheel Safary. — PTI

Go green

Being concerned about the environment and taking action steps is a must these days. We have to preserve the planet for forthcoming generations. Bollywood celebrity Priyanka Chopra shares some tips.

Priyanka Chopra: Just because tissue paper is free, it doesn’t mean that you should use like there is no tomorrow. Tissue is made from paper, and trees are cut to make paper. Tissues contribute to waste. Use napkins instead, because they are reusable.

Switch to organic beauty products.

If you are not concerned about the environment, keep in mind that the chemicals in your toiletries are very harmful for you. This growing awareness and demand has brought many leading organic cosmetic brands to India, so spend a little more and take your pick.

Use water judiciously. Do not leave taps on.

No child’s play this
DJ Bhuvi, in Chandigarh to promote his upcoming album Bhuvi XS, says training is essential for becoming a DJ
Jasmine Singh

Right Note: DJ Bhuvi

What used to be a passion with music enthusiasts, has now grown to the stature of an industry. What used to be a simple scratch 'n' mix job is now a full-fledged, high-flying deal. Deejaying — it is not a child's play anymore!

Well, not literally. At least celebrity DJ Bhuvi, in Chandigarh to promote his upcoming album Bhuvi XS, doesn't think deejaying to be 'only' passion-driven profession. Yes, you heard it right. Deejaying is a profession. Any doubt? Over to Dj Bhuvi for a ground clearance.

"With the reach of global music increasing, deejaying has almost grown into an industry," shares Bhuvi, known for his innovative and forward music concepts. "More and more youngsters are attracted to this profession. There is no harm in it, but training in the same is also important. You can't proclaim to be a DJ by learning to mix and match music at home."

With no defined genre to slot him in, Bhuvi says he believes in creating music that people like. "I don't create a particular kind of music. I make what people like and travel has exposed them to different kinds of music. Bhangra music rules the roost. This is a form of music that has come a long way, with more international acceptance than any other music," adds Bhuvi who has given tracks like De Daru (Desi Mix), Woh Sikander Hi, Mushkil Bada Yeh Pyar Hai and various Bhangra hits.

On the coming album Bhuvi XS, which by the way has all the Punjabi elements, daaru and jatt is something that the music composer is excited about. Before that what's with daaru and dunaali? He laughs, "Punjabis travel worldwide and therefore they know the latest lifestyle."

The album DJ Bhuvi XS is set for release on India's biggest music label T-Series. It features voices of Master Saleem, Labh Janjua, Charanjeet Channi, Peppery aka Bongo Chilli (UK), Ranjit Teji (USA) and many more. It's got lyrics from the likes of Satta Kotliwala, Hardeep Mahal, Davinder Magrala and DJ Bhuvi himself." The album features massive club bangers and also melodious summer time tunes.

The music of the album is a fusion of traditional Bhangra with international genres like hip-hop, dance-hall, funk, reggae and reggae-ton.

The launch track titled - Thodi Hor Peen Do - promises to be a huge hit with the young crowd because of the catchy vocals. "It has powerful bhangra and hip-hop beats, and is sure to be a hit." Any plans of releasing it online as well? "I understand online is a good way to be popular. However, for the interiors of Punjab, CDs are the only source of music entertainment."

Its raining trends
It’s the cool linen, easy-to-dry mal mal and chic cotton making a fashion statement this monsoon
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

The thought of walking out of the door with pressed clothes and neat hair is frightful during monsoon. Don't curse the dark clouds and put a little bit of thought into your dressing and you'll be better equipped for monsoon.

KISS rule

The mantra for rains is to keep it short and simple. "Choose shirts and tees with short sleeves or sleeves which end at the elbow. Avoid wearing ankle-length skirts and trousers. Go in for the knee-length skirts or short-dresses. Capris are the best option during this season so are shorts. White shirts or tees look cool but they are like inviting trouble in monsoon. Keep your whites for a sunny August noon," says Ritu Kochar, corporate director, INIFD.

For colours she suggests, "Choose brighter hues for a gloomy rainy day. Colours like red, orange, olive green, brown and indigo would make you feel good about yourself." In fabrics she suggests, "Linen, mal mal and cotton are the best fabrics for monsoon."

Men have no option but to wear full-length trousers especially to work, but you can choose fabrics like blended cotton and poly-nylon which dry away easily and do not crush.

Suit your style

While it's time to pack some of your loved dresses and long gowns, this season is all about choosing the right fabric than the right style. "Monsoons is the time when people should go for fabrics that are easy to dry and don't crush easily. Chiffons and synthetics should be avoided, as they tend to stick to the body and the crease of the cloth doesn't fall well. Cotton is the best bet for monsoons so is mal and cotton silk," says Simple from Simple Kaur in Sector 35.

She adds, "Monsoon is the time to flaunt your kurtis. Team them with Pakistani salwars, plazos, capris or cotton slacks for a wow look. Jump suits too are great for the rains." And well, if you are fond of slawar kameez than we may suggest pack your heavy salwaar kameez - with dupatta's for winters, it is just too messy to manage salwar kameez and dupatta in the rains.

Just casuals

Say goodbye to denims, jeggings and long, flowy skirts. Bring in the capris and shorts. But make sure you are not wearing clothes that are too tight! You want enough 'leg room' to elope from a sudden cloud burst. Wear t-shirts in happy colours like lime green, hot pink and deep blue. They're the perfect rejuvenator for gloomy surroundings.

"Guys, say no to baggy pants this season. Pull out your denim jeans and cut them or simply fold them to a length comfortably higher than ground level. Or go the Ashton Kutcher way, sporting stylish mapris," says designer Amit Kashyap.

Dress sense

l Stack away those jeggings for the rains. Bid good buy to tight, full length skirts and pure white outfits. Knee length skirts are in this season. But avoid wearing mini-skirts loaded with embellishments.

l The key to comfortable dressing in rains is the fabric you chose, though some dry faster and some simply don't. It is fabrics like mal, cotton and linen that should be worn in the monsoons.

MASTER CHEF
Chocoholics beware!
Pallav Singhal
Chocolate Mousse

Attention chocoholics, this is a warning. One spoonful of this chocolate mousse and you will be hooked forever. This is what I call a chocolate pudding for grown ups, a simple, easy yet elegant dessert. While it uses only a few ingredients, chocolate, egg whites, butter and cream, its chocolate flavour is rich and its texture is silky smooth, and foamy. Foamy is an apt description as "mousse" is French for 'froth' or 'foam'.

Recipe

l Chocolate dark 600 gram

l Whipped cream-320 gram

l Egg white- 45 gram

l Unsalted butter- 120 gram

Method

Melt the chocolate and butter together on double bath. Care has to be taken that no moisture gets into the mixture. Whip your cream to fluffy consistency till it starts to get a stiff peak. Add 1/4the whipped cream to the melted chocolate and mix well.

Whip the egg white till soft, thick and fold into the chocolate. Very slowly and delicately fold in rest of the whip cream to the chocolate till it mixes well. Again please do not over mix the mixture as there is a possibility of the mixture to settle down.

Deposit in a mould and rest in the refrigerator for at least one hour to set.

Garnish with dark chocolate flakes and dust with icing sugar.

The foodies
Whiff of South

If you want genuine flavour of the South Indian variegated cuisine other than the routine idlis and dosas, then Punj Spice in Park Plaza in Ludhiana is the best place to have a meal any time in this whole week.

It is a delightful journey for food lovers as the aromatic South-Indian courses unfold starting with koshambri and kachumber salads effectively combined with tangy raw mango pickle. Non-vegetarian delights like kozhi koora chicken and mutton pepper fry bring out the absolutely different taste and for the veggies, the attraction is the mushroom surprise, putta godugula koora and the south Indian potato delight, Kai Khuruma.

Rijuta Jain, a bakery specialist, had brought her friends was pleasantly surprised and pleased with the genuine south-Indian fare here. “Awesome is the word to describe this traditional South Indian food. We are actually finding it difficult to believe that we are in Ludhiana,” she says. Her riend, Sheetal, from Amritsar adds, “The effect is heightened and authenticated with the typical South-Indian music and the complementing attire of the waiters. An NRI group of friends from Canada gave a thumbs-up to the special Kal Dosa and the baby banana dosas which are just ideal to have with the varied veggies and other fine courses. They tell us, “It seems as a healthy eating space and spices too are stomach-friendly.”
As we continued our South Indian journey, Urali roast and different kinds of curd rice, were the ideal accompaniments and when we came to the desserts, sago and sevian payasam and white pumpkin halwa served by the waiters dressed in the typical South Indian dhotis and adequately anointed foreheads, it did take us to the other side of the country. Of course, no such typical meal could be complete without sipping the aromatic filter coffee. The best part of the festival is that it is not a buffet but a’la carte selection, as per menu.

On from June 24 to July 3 at a set meal veg - Rs 495 plus taxes and set meal non- veg - Rs 595.Poonam Bindra
