Monsoon hits region ahead of schedule
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 25
The southwest monsoon today advanced into parts of Punjab and Haryana a few days ahead of schedule, bringing heavy rains, and is likely to cover Delhi in the next couple of days.

Currently, the northern limit of monsoon is passing through Porbandar, Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Ajmer, Jaipur, Dholpur, Shahjahanpur, Pantnagar, Patiala and Jammu. The Met office said conditions were favourable for further advancement of the vital seasonal rains in remaining parts of Punjab, west Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, and some more parts of Rajasthan during the next two or three days.

In the regions where the monsoon is yet to set in, day temperatures were appreciably above normal like in some parts of west Rajasthan, the IMD said, adding that temperatures were below normal in parts of Punjab.

Ludhiana in Punjab was the wettest place with 79 mm of rains, providing the much-needed relief to the people from sultry weather conditions. Other places in the state to be lashed by rains included Patiala, Nangal, Ropar, Anandpur Sahib, Balachaur and Phagwara.

While in Haryana, Ambala, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Rohtak and Panchkula were lashed by rains, Chandigarh also received a heavy downpour in the wee hours today. The rains will help farmers as paddy transplantation is underway in the region. The rains came after high humidity and hot-weather conditions persisted in the region during the past two weeks. Showers were accompanied by high velocity winds in some places which led to disruption of power supply. The monsoon this year is likely to be 97

per cent of its Long Period Average (LPA) over northwest India, comprising Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier this week, the weather office had predicted “weakening” of monsoon currents in the first two weeks of July but assured that the rains would pick up around July 15.

The forecast for the next 48 hours says that rains would occur at many places in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh and a few places in Jammu & Kashmir and Rajasthan.
