Ace designer Neeta Lulla feels there is more to the glitzy world of fashion than just dressing up celebrities
Ashima Sehajpal

It's an old-old story. It was 'once upon a time' that Aishwarya Rai walked the red carpet at Cannes in our very own Neeta Lulla's creation. It happened good eight years back, when the actor didn't sport an Armani or Elie Saab as she did this year. But all said and done, Aishwarya and Cannes is one combination that has been extensively studied and analysed by fashion experts. It might be old, ancient but can't be forgotten. So, on Monday, when Netta Lulla was in Chandigarh to conduct a workshop at the INIFD at Sector -8, we took her opinion on her regular client's this year's performance. Her reply was, "I heard all good things about her outfits this time." And after this, the question was answered in the form of a question, "Why everything that Aishwarya doesn't do at Cannes makes for news? I think there's more to the actor than just appearing at Cannes."

The celebrity designer and her celebrity client Aishwarya's association goes beyond the international film festival. Neeta has designed looks for actors in over 350 films, including Aishwarya Rai's Jodha Akbar and Devdas. The period film was a challenge for Neeta as she had to do extensive research. "I didn't use the brocade fabric in Jodha Akbar as it is, but, recreated the whole pattern and used it on 'mal'. I studied a lot to know what kind of fabric and embroidery was used at that time." The experience of designing for other films like Lamhe and Khuda Gawah also helped her, which now is coming handy as she is designing the look for Rajnikant and Deepika Padukone in the much-hyped film, Rana. "The look has to be glamorous and regal at the same time. Designing for period films is more than just creating costumes, the complete look has to complement the time period. In case of Rana, we would be going 800 years back."

Her other favourite subject is Ratan ka Rishta, for which she has designed the wedding outfits for Ratan Rajput. The approach this time was different from what it was in case of Rakhi Ka Swayamver. "Rakhi is glamorous, so we opted for all bold colours. For Ratan we chose subtle colours and Indo-western outfits that would suit her personality."

Neeta also made news for launching a luxury luggage brand. She tied up with the luggage brand to come up with a bridal luggage collection. "It's in bright colours with embroidery on it."

Besides conducting a workshop at INIFD, she is also planning to pick two interns from the institute. Neeta feels that there is an urgent need for the fashion industry to diversify. The advice she has for youngsters is, "Designing is only a part of the work in the industry. There are other sectors like marketing, merchandising, on set arrangements, which are never considered by the budding designers. The industry needs super-specialists, why not aspire to do that." She adds that it's a misconception that fashion is all about glamour. "There's more to it, we can't ignore the economics of it."

For young music aficionados it's the music created by the legends like The Beatles which continues to inspire them
Manpriya Khurana

Musical tastes alternate between Elvis Presley and Akon, Eminem and The Beatles, go fast forward to Lady Gaga and Rihanna, only to come back to Bob Dylan and may be, Beethoven! An average playlist is a confluence of a world of musical influences, from hip hop to rock and roll to hard core rock… On the World Music Day, youngsters list their personal favourites and who they think have been the most influential musicians of the century.

Not surprisingly, The Beatles top the list among Chandigarh youth. The legendary British rock band continues to resonate, cutting across generations. Shares Narcissus, B Sc student, rap artist from Rnb Crew United Cloudz, "There have been infinite good musicians and artists but The Beatles is not only a legendary group, but stands apart." The 11-year-old track Real Slim Shady still remains any rap crew's anthem. Perhaps, the spurt of a dozen rap crews (average one in each class) can be traced back to him.

Jasmine Sydney, a Class XII student says, "I love Eminem, Rihanna, Lady Gaga…the likes of these are a staple in my friend's and my playlists. But when it comes to musical influences, The Beatles is a legend.” The iconic rock band members have admitted to have been influenced by Elvis Presley.

Cuts in Sharon Dhiman, "There are very few parties where Jailhouse Rock wouldn't be played. Likewise Billie Jeans is a safe bet for any club." Hardly any teenager has grown up without Michael Jackson. Sharon says, "I think he cuts across not just generations but also geographies. It's likewise with MJ and his moonwalk." How can we miss Bryan Adams! Sharon adds. "There are two folders in my music library. One is called All Time comprising Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Bryan Adams and the other has Lil Wayne, Eminem, Rihanna, there is audience for all of them but as far inspiring music is concerned that comes only from the legends."

On the World Music Day, here is what music means to its dedicated followers
Vasudha Gupta

Music is an emotional expression. With the innate quality to move beyond boundaries and people, music is today one of the most respected forms of art and has been modified to suit people of all ages. What started out as a concept in France, as Fête de la Musique, the World Music Day has now become a global phenomenon. On this day, we try to understand how experts define music.

A leading name of the Indian music industry, Kailash Kher believes that music expresses the innermost thoughts and feelings. "When you talk of music, it branches into forms, types and vocals. Today the level of experimentation with music is high. The younger generation is more liberal and willing to try different things, which is bringing a positive change in the music industry," he says.

According to city-based music expert and the chairperson of Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi Kamal Tewari says, "It's not only a form of art but also the right way to achieve salvation. Music has an impact even on the unborn child."

Lamenting that folk singers were not getting their due he says, "They silently continue to produce great music in the background and have an understated glory about them."

Singer Ratnika Tewari, Head of the Department of Vocal Music, Post Graduate Government College for Girls says, "The real essence of music is in teaching after the process of learning is complete."

Member of a young band, Local Train, Ramit Mehra, says, "It's an integral part of life. It's rare that you find people who are not into music, just the degree varies," he smiles. "With the Internet, the reach has increased. More people have started valuing good music," he adds.

"The television talent hunt shows are a great platform for the younger generation to develop a taste in music," he says.

For the band's guitarist, Paras Thakur, music meant leaving his engineering study and not being able to grab the golden opportunity to study in the Musician Academy in LA. "It was four years back that I discovered my love for music," he says. Sahil Sarin, the band's drummer says, "Music is life." For DJ AJ, who plays the latest in Score, "Music has no limit. It's deeper than words and instruments. We just make it more refined," he smiles.

Chocolate boy
Jasmine Singh

He insists on starting anything new with something sweet-In theworld of advertisement and in real life as well. For model Nikhil Mehta in Chandigarh to share his experiences at the OXL School of Multimedia, talks about the sweet and not so sour world of advertising.

The sweetness and smoothness of the Cadbury bar did spread into this model's life as well. As he shares, "The ad was an instant hit with the audiences and I got noticed. I guess the sweetness of the chocolate bar had to melt in my life."It sure did as Nikhil went on to do many more ads like 7 Up, Big Babool. "The ad world is a different place. I haven't learnt acting or how to handle myself in front of the camera. But this was a place where every ad taught me something new," shares Nikhil who doesn't deny the fairly fat cheque he gets to take back home.

Nikhil would want to venture into Bollywood in the near future but nothing like the ad world, he swears. "New concepts, newer ideas and directors ready to take on young faces on screen, has given the ad world a different direction. Audiences start relating you with an ad, which means they will remember you for times to come." The 18-year-old says, "There aren't many challenges I can think of." Didn't we say life was very sweet!

"I am learning the ways of the world, " he smiles. "Advertisements are a good learning ground," he adds.

We ask Nikhil about his role in the upcoming movie Bodyguard. "I don't know yet, I mean it still has to figure out."

Her debut movie will be directed by Aanand Balraj, the younger brother of Deepak Balraj, who directed the movie Hafta Bandh.

No remakes please

Even as remakes have become the flavour of the season in Bollywood, megastar Amitabh Bachchan personally does not favour the trend. "Abhishek and I feel that an original should be left (as) original. People who are doing remakes have the rights of the original films.. so they can do it," Bachchan, whose films like Satte Pe Satta and Agnipath-- are being remade, said when asked if his company, AB Corp, plans to try its hand at remakes.

Bachchan said there was a generation that loved K L Saigal as Devdas. "For my generation, Dilip Kumar was the ultimate Devdas. For today's youth, it is Shah Rukh. Tastes and preferences change with generations as one goes about remaking the same product.

"Who knows, after some years people might feel that Shah Rukh is the original Don," Big B said.

He also said that he was not a trendsetter for the "angry young man" characters. "There were few of them before me, prominent one being Duttsaab (Sunil Dutt) in Mother India." Bachchan said his own his 'angry young man' characters clicked, because of the times. The youth were perceived to be angry with the system and they identified with his characters who took on an entire system and won.

He laments that the soft lyrical quality of music has disappeared. The 68-year-old is hoping that the song Haal-e-dil sung by him in the coming Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap will revive that kind of music.

The veteran said he was unhappy that there was lack of good dialogue and screenplay in today's movies, unlike films like Deewar, Trishul, Silsila, whose dialogues are remembered even today. "Today, there is no longevity." Performing action sequences, dancing and singing at this age was physically strenuous for him, he concedes. "I go to the gym every day. But for this role, I trained a little more and looked after my diet," he added. — PTI

Saif denies break-up rumours

Actor Saif Ali Khan has denied reports that he and his girlfriend Kareena Kapoor are going through a rough patch, saying they are happy together. "I would like to reassure our fans and well-wishers that all is well with Kareena and I...we are working hard but we always make time for each other. All these rumours are disturbing and untrue...especially when families are brought into it, it's in such bad taste. I wouldn't like to say anymore except we are very happy together," Saif, 40, said in a press statement.

Saif and Kareena, 30, who are considered one of the hottest couples in Bollywood, are seeing each other for the past four years. And they even featured together in films like Tashan and Kurbaan. The 25-year-old actress, who was last seen alongside Abhishek Bachchan in 'Game', will be seen alongside Aishwarya in Bhandarkar's much awaited film Heroine.

"Can't talk about my role but its very exciting and am very happy to be working with Madhur Bhandarkar! Ash is a sweetheart, always been," Shahana said. — PTI

Christina no gatecrasher

Singer Christina Aguilera has denied rumours of gatecrashing into actor Jeremy Renner’s party and falling asleep on his bed saying it was an open bash and that she was accompanying her boyfriend, who was invited there.

Renner, who turned 40 in January, threw a big party with a host of Hollywood friends in attendance. Aguilera allegedly barged into the bash with boyfriend Matthew Rutler, a film production assistant, and became so inebriated that she passed out in Renner's bedroom, reports a website. But the pop star insists she did nothing wrong. "Matt was the one who was invited. I went as his girlfriend. It was an open party, and everyone was spread out all over the house," she said. "At one point I sat on the edge of the bed. It was a guest room. But it only takes one person to start the negativity, and then everyone wants to hop aboard and continue the story," she added.— IANS

Penning it down

Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds has turned writer for a US magazine to pen a humourous biographical article for them. The 34-year-old star has written a humourous biography titled Why I'm Obsessed With Ryan Reynolds for the latest issue of a magazine, reported a publication. “In the Reynolds household, family came first... He spent a great deal of time with his older brothers... Fun to bruise and generally considered to be 'emergency food,' he was teased for being the sensitive kid who liked to mow the lawn and get punched in the face...

"After moving to Los Angeles at the tender age of 19 - armed with only USD600 and a rape whistle - he quickly established himself as one of Hollywood's most dynamic and immensely talented waiters," wrote Reynolds. The Green Lantern star, who profiles himself in a light manner in the write-up, has also shared his run-in with environmentalist actor Ed Begley Jr, who allegedly knocked Reynolds off his bicycle while he was pedalling around Los Angeles. "In 2006, in an effort to decrease his widening carbon footprint, Reynolds abandoned the use of his car and spent a year bicycling around Los Angeles. LA is not well-known as a bicycle-friendly metropolis. His lofty sojourn would soon take a tragic turn when he was run over... Not by a motorist, but by Ed Begley Jr on his 12-speed Nishiki (bicycle), calling Reynolds an 'idealist' while kicking him with a mile and a half of freshly shaved bone-white leg," wrote the actor. - PTI

OMG! They’re back again

Hollywood's estranged couple Courteney Cox and David Arquette are back together for a new game show. The 46-year-old former Friends star and Arquette who announced a trial separation last year, have jointly sold a pilot called Identity Crisis to CBS, reported a website. The programme requires contestants to identify celebrities based on a number of clues and is based on a board game.

Cox and Arquette are acting as executive producers on the show and if the pilot is well received then a full series will be commissioned. The game show is the third TV project the pair have worked on together, following Dirt and Cougar Town - both of which starred Cox and were produced by their company Coquette Productions. Although they have maintained a working relationship and have remained on good terms since their split, Arquette recently admitted he is unsure if he and Courteney will ever reconcile. — PTI

Putting-Grip & set up
Jesse Grewal

The putting stroke is greatly influenced by the grip and set up. While the grip controls the work of the hands the set up influence alignment and the path. There are many varied grips in 'putting'. The most common one of them is the 'reverse overlap'. The principle behind this is to reduce the work of the hands and wrists during the stroke. Players who have difficulty controlling the hands are said to have the 'yips'. They often resort to unconventional grips like the reverse grip (left hand below the right hand), the claw grip or use belly or long putters. For players with poor speed control and also the yips try to get the putter grip in the palms and not the fingers. The shape of the putter grip is different to that on the other clubs-it is not circular but has a flat surface in front on which both the thumbs should lie. There is also a curve on the back of the grip which is designed to fit into the valley around the left hands life line. The putter grip should lie here and not in the fingers as in the rest of the clubs. Take a tee and put it into the butt of the club and check that the line formed by the tee and the grip runs through the forearm (picture 3).

The reverse overlap is when the index finger of the left hand lies over the fingers of the right hand. This helps reduce the work of the wrists. Take the putter in the left hand with the thumb on the flat surface on top of the putter. Extend the index finger and separate it from the grip (picture 1). Place the right hand on the grip with the thumb on top of the flat portion and then place the index finger of the left hand on top of the fingers of the right hand (picture 2).

For a good set up we should bend from the upper portion of the back so that your face is facing the ground (picture 6). The putter and the forearms are in line and both the arms are in line with each other (picture 7). If the left arm is inside the line of the right arm the putter will go outwards on the backswing.

If the right arm is inside the line then the putter will have an inwards backswing and an in to out stroke. When viewed from the front the hands are slightly ahead of the ball and the ball is positioned left of centre (picture 5). A good square set up builds a good stroke.

TROUBLESHOOTER
Talk your way to his heart
Simmi Waraich

My husband is very aggressive. He starts fighting over little things and then will carry on talking or berating me for hours together. I have learnt to switch off and I do not pay attention when he does this but my younger son gets very upset. He has started answering him back. Also, he has started using opium. I know he is a good child and can do a lot in his life. How do I stop him from using opium?

Jasmeet Kaur, Ludhiana.

Keep talking to him. Maybe let him get time away from his father by visiting some close relatives. It may make him rethink about what he is doing. Talk to other family members who he looks up to and insist on treatment. See how you maybe adding to his problem through your own fears by giving him money. Be clear but firm. He may need to learn new coping skills to deal with his father's behaviour- as they say we cannot choose where we are born or where we come from but we can choose who we become in life.

Break the cycle of negativity

I am a 22-year-old boy. I was a good student but in my college exams I started writing very slowly and began to go blank. As a result I failed. Now before any exam I fear the worst and go blank. It has started happening in my daily life as well. I feel I cannot do simple tasks and forget or become confused. It is affecting my self-confidence. What can I do?

Ashish, Chandigarh

At times, some negative incidents that impact us negatively can become the focus and we begin to anticipate that every time, the same negative event will repeat it. As a result of anticipating that disaster will strike "every time" our anxiety levels rise and the negative events occur because our anxiety makes them recur. To break the cycle, you would need to learn some relaxation exercises and meditation. You would be taught to identify what thoughts are adding to the anxiety and modify them. Start by giving yourself hope every day, focusing on your strengths and learning to distract yourself by focusing on external things such as the words of a song, counting backwards from 100-1, focusing on the people and trees around you and noticing little details. Mild anti-anxiety agents also help to get one out of this vicious cycle.

Also, remind yourself not to use absolute words such as every time, always, can't, never. These add to the problem. Instead use "When it happens", "Sometimes", etc.

Colour my world
Red, black, violet, brown and even hot shades of blonde are the popular hair colour choices this season
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Abbey Lee Kershaw was the first model to change her hair colour and rest is history. Though choosing a right hair colour is not an easy task, but with the options and professional help available these days there is no stopping the one who wants to experiment a little. Natural is the key word in fashion for 2011 and when it comes to choosing a hair colour you are to be guided by naturalness as well in order to be trendy in 2011.

Going by the global trend, red is an absolute hair colour trend for 2011. But be very careful while using this colour as uber bright red hair colour will highlight all the possible flaws on your face.

"Violet and brown are doing really well for hair colours this season," says Praveen Diwan from Headmasters Sector 8. He adds, "Shades warm up for fall and winter and this season it is the red family, rich browns and warm tones of blonde that are popular hair colours."

Blonde is another one that is another popular option this season and as we know that blonde hair has a certain zest, which enhances the sex appeal, it's definitely a head turner. "There is a great variety of blonde shades to choose from and for Indian skin we have a variety of shades to suit the skin," says Aslam a hairstylist. Well, this means you will be in vogue irrespective of the blonde hair colour you select.

"For global hair colour trends, brown and blonde are doing well and for streaking violet is the best since it bleeds less," says Ruhi, manager, Lakme beauty salon.

We may add brown hair colour is definitely hot as it suits most skin tones and is always utterly popular and the 2011 is no exception. "There are a great variety of brown hair colour shades to choose from depending on what suits your complexion, from dark chocolate brown to light caramel. If you have swarthy or a little tanned skin complexion, go for a wonderful coffee or taffy brown hair colour," suggest Ruhi.

Finally black is a permanent trend when it comes to hair colour. "Black is a great alternative for women whose complexion is pale as well as a bit tanned," says Praveen.

Fenugreek can spice up life

For centuries, many herbs have been claimed to boost people's sex drive. Add one more to the list - fenugreek, a bean-like plant which grows in India and other Asian countries, and used in curries, say researchers.

In fact, India is said to be the largest producer of fenugreek herb in the world with Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Haryana and Punjab being the major producing states.

A new study by the Centre for Integrative Clinical and Molecular Medicine in Brisbane has found that fenugreek, used in curries, can spice up men's sex life by boosting male libidos to a good extent.

Fenugreek seeds contain compounds called saponins and it is thought these stimulate male sex hormones including testosterone, say the researchers.

In their study, the researchers monitored libidos and found that fenugreek boosted their sex drive by at least a quarter. The subjects aged between 25 and 52 took an extract of the herb twice a day for six weeks. —PTI

Javed plays mentor

Not many actors can claim to be a threat to actor and comedian Javed Jaffrey but at the recent shoot for Zee Cinema's Double Dhamaal Nite, the actor seemed completely awestruck following a performance by the fantastic five of Dance India Dance - Dharmesh, Siddhesh, Prince, Jai and Mayuresh! Whether it was fascination or fear of competition we don't know for sure but the crew noticed that he did not waste any time in praising them in person. The five performed to some of the most memorable songs of the decade gone by and paid homage to stars like Govinda, Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Akshay Kumar.

"Dharmesh, Jai and the rest are a bunch of supremely talented dancers who have graced television. Everything right from their moves to their expressions is bang on target and totally in sync! In fact I am sure that if they decide to venture into Bollywood, they will give us oldies a run for our money with their comic timing and superior dancing skills!" said Javed while speaking of the performance that left him at a loss for words.

Yash Tonk & Amrita Raichand
PAST PERFECT: Yash Tonk & Amrita Raichand

Actress Amrita Raichand who plays Maharani Gayatri in Zee TV's new historical drama Shobha Somnath ki which is replacing iconic historical show Jhansi Ki Rani gets candid.

What made you accept the role of Maharani Gayatri in Shobha Somnath Ki?

A period drama is a first for me. And I have always striven to attempt new things in life. I like shocking myself out of my comfort zone. Maharani Gayatri is a central character in the plot of the show and her special, unique bond with princess Shobhana is what touched a chord with me. I can hardly wait for the reactions for this role.

Did you not have any reservations about being typecast in a specific mould by playing a historical figure?

None at all, I have essayed an entire spectrum of roles that represent contemporary women from different walks of life and will continue to play more such roles after Shobha Somnath Ki. I don't see why being part of a historical should come in the way of my getting different roles in the future.

What sets Shobha Somnath Ki apart from other historical dramas?

Zee has chosen to take the least trodden path of digging into unexplored chapters of Indian history that have the potential of making a remarkable story when told interestingly. Shobha Somnath Ki narrates the awe-inspiring story of India's unsung heroine Shobha who stood tall and strong in the face of a fiery invasion by Mughal emperor Mahmud of Ghazni. Besides, the sheer canvas against which Shobha Somnath Ki is set is larger than life. Built on a sprawling plot of over nine acres, the magnificent sets of Shobha Somnath Ki are a vision to look at! Over 500 artisans have been relentlessly working for over a year and a half to build the monumental buildings. Most passers-by on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway come into the sets, mistaking the grand replica of India's ancient Somnath Temple for the original. I have to mention here I've had the privilege of wearing the gorgeous costumes and jewellery.

How similar are you from your character Maharani Gayatri?

Growing up in a small town in Jamshedpur in the TATA township, where my late father was a young General Manager, I was continuously exposed to outdoor and extra-curricular activities which added to a strong sense of discipline and values. We were taught to be go-getters throughout our lives.
