Gear up for adventure
Now that you have said a 'hearty' yes to adventure, discovering detours, chasing angels in the woods, fleeing demons, criss-crossing through the tides…we bet you also know how to gear up for this! Here, we strictly mean style, what to wear and how to carry your knick-knacks when you are on an adventure trip. Before you start pulling out your best dresses from the closet, just in case you do, we bring you a quick run down on how to be stylishly prepared for a vacation…hitting the mountains or even trekking Mt Everest, if you decide to do so. Chandigarh-based designer Sukoon Sandhu has an interesting take on it. "Let your spirit select what you want to wear when you are going out on a vacation, especially if adventure is on the agenda." The 'spirit' might need some guidance! "What you wear should be decided on the basis of the place and activity you are planning. If you are thinking of trekking, jump into some cool khaki shorts. Cargo pants with a lot of pockets is another good option. For once you can give your favourite denims a miss," she says. Travelling light is another 'must consider' factor. Leave your Dolce & Gabbana clutches or bags for evening mocktails. "Water-proof rucksacks, which are not too bulky, should be an ideal choice," the designer adds. If you thought walking up the hill or cycling through a valley is nothing but touching base with yourself (which it is), see how fashion companies are bringing in the fashion quotient in adventure as well. Parkash Sons have announced its dealership with Wildcraft India Pvt. Ltd in Chandigarh, Sector 17, to make available adventure, travel and everyday outdoor gear featuring rucksacks, sleeping bags, tents, backpacks, laptop backpacks, duffels et al for activities like travelling, hiking, cycling and other outdoor pursuits. Says Ashwani Kumar, managing director Parkash Sons, "Adventure is on each one's 'must-do' list. So, we provide products crafted and produced by WildCraft India, which are reliable and also keep up with the latest trends, styles and in elegant colours, according to the choice of today's youth in Chandigarh as well as Punjab." Wildcraft is known for backpacks, rucksacks, travel accessories, active wear and survival gear. If the running through the jungle with wind in your hair and sand at your feet doesn't entice you a bit, we bet the latest trekking and adventure gear available in the market by various sports brands will. Mehak Kundra and her friends, textile designing students from Saraba Nagar, Ludhiana, feel that their excitement quotient goes up when they see their cool, comfortable and trendy trekking attire as well as amazingly light rucksacks. Mehak can't hide her excitement, "I love to mountain-bike and river-raft whenever I have time. But I am always confused about the comfortable clothing for the same. Now, the market is flooded with options like shorts, tees, dungrees, cargos, caps and loads of other stuff like sippers, bags, waist pouches, which make travelling a stylish thing to do." So, pull yourself, slip into a cool adventure gear and get ready to feel the wind in your hair and sand at your feet! jasmine@tribunemail.com |

Go vivid
Pair up orange with fuscia, sea-green with blue, yellow with beige or even brown with black. Colour blocking is a trend that's horribly-in this season! Solid block of colours put against each other has walked over the ramp into real life. Part of all major ramp shows, from Spring Summer 2011 to even local, colour blocking is a hit with major international brands as well. One can find it prominently in latest collections by designers from Manish Arora to Valentino. "Colour blocking is making waves across the continents. It's just that according to climates the colours change," says Jai from Parvesh-Jai. If Europe banks on earthy shades, it's vibrant ones for Asia, especially India. "It's more like cubism in fashion. It has been around for the last three-four seasons, but is a real rage," says Reena Dhaka, fashion designer. "I was always fascinated by bright hues but scared to wear them lest I looked loud," shares Shriya, a college-going fashion-freak. Shriya is happy pairing her favourite colours however contrasting they are, as this is 'in'! If you fall in Shriya's league, here is Jai's advice, "In colour theory there is this gravitational notion. This recommends wearing light colour on the upper torso and darker one on the lower. This helps you look tall and pleasing." Colour blocking, that uses two blocks of solid colours or more, can be appropriate for any occasion. Stick to black, whites or greys for the formal look. All other colours do well for a casual look. Even the classical little black dress is facing stiff competition from dresses that make use of colour blocking. "The younger generation (say 20-30 age bracket) is experimenting more and more in cities like Chandigarh," offers Jai, alumni of NIFT, Mohali. Colour blocking is not for ethnic wear though. As the emphasis is more on surface detailing, colours don't stand out as well. Apart from that be it jewellery, bags, shoes or even make-up, colour blocking rules! So are you ready to flaunt the look the season? mona@tribunemail.com Watch Out

Big hype, little magic
Bheja Fry 2 Bharat Bhushan is back — complete with his singing aspirations and quirks. Actor Vinay Pathak, who plays the lead character of Bharat Bhushan, returns with a sequel to the 2007 hit film Bheja Fry in which he wins himself a free trip on a luxury cruise after winning a TV game show. But this time, in Bheja Fry 2, Bhushan doesn't have Ranjeet Thadani, who in the 2007 film was played by actor Rajat Kapoor. According to critics, it was a difficult task for any director to meet expectations with a sequel to a hit film, so Bheja Fry 2 failed on many fronts. Starring: Vinay Pathak, Kay Kay Menon, Minissha Lamba, Suresh Menon, Amole Gupte and Rahul Vohra Too slow "I had high expectations from the movie, but it really did not match up. Part one was a surprise package, this is just too slow." — Sameer Lega, student. No fun "The humour was too far apart and laid back. The attempt to make it funny has failed." — Anmol Arora, IT professional Laughter riot "I totally think it was a laughter riot. The script was good and Vinay Pathak lived up to his image." — Akanksha Sharma, housewife Always Kabhi Kabhi High-School rom-coms have never really made their mark in the Hindi film industry. There have been many attempts in the past to tap this genre, but they've all failed. Now the Badshah of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan tries his hands with a youth-based film Always Kabhi Kabhi. Starring: Ali Fazal, Giselle Monteiro, Zoa Morani, Satyajit Dubey, Lillete Dubey Very boring "It is a fresh idea, but the script fails in certain places. The expectations out of the second half totally fail. It turns very boring." — Mayank Kundu, student. Will not click "I had hoped that Roshan Abbas will do justice to this movie. It's something that will not click with the audience." — Rekha Verma, student Script weak "Nothing at all holds your attention. Shah Rukh needs to ensure a better script before taking up a film like this." — Sahira Kashyap, entrepreneur. Green Lantern
Protectors of peace and justice have existed for centuries —they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate lies in the hands of their recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan. Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Angela Bassett, Tim Robbins Average show "Apart from a few visual effects, it's not something that excites the audience. On the whole it is very average." — Preetinder Kaur, student It's disappointing "It's one of the few movies, which tends to disappoint. I have always been a big fan of the comic, but this does not compare." — Karanjot Chopra, student (As told to Vasudha Gupta) |
Kishwar’s monsoon PLANS
Kishwar Merchant popularly known as Haseena from Pyaar Kii Yeh Ek Kahaani on Star One loves the monsoon and has already jotted down the things that she plans to do this season. Visit to a hill station I have never been to Lonavala so, I would love to go there this monsoon. Even Mahabaleshwar is a good option. Suyash and I have been planning a trip since a long time but both have been tied up due to shooting. The monsoon is the best excuse to make the trip and I hope the plan works out. Getting drenched I love getting wet during this season. The other day when it was pouring my friends and I got fully drenched in the rain as we enjoyed some hot and tasty pakodas at a stall. Unfortunately Suyash was shooting and could not join us. I want him to be with me next time. Watching a romantic movie It is not necessary that one has to be outdoors to enjoy the monsoon, plans can be made at home. I would love to get cozy with my boyfriend during the monsoon weather and watch a romantic movie together. Getting pampered I cannot cook, the only thing I can prepare well is maggi. So I would want Suyash to cook a hot meal for me as I sit back and enjoy watching the rains from my window. It is every girlfriend’s right to demand some pampering from her guy. Romantic long drive A romantic long drive on the expressway would be perfect since I love being surrounded by greenery. Suyash will drive while I will leave the window a little open so that little drops of rain can splash on my face. |
Accident on the sets of Phulwa An unfortunate incident happened near the sets of Colors' Phulwa produced by Siddharth Tewary, after a child drowned in the lake near the location which led to the halt of the shoot. A group of kids came to swim in the lake near the set and the tragedy happened when a kid started drowning in the lake. The crew members of Phulwa noticed this and rushed to the spot to save the kid. But their efforts were in vain as the kid's body was recovered. The shoot of Phulwa was put on hold for a few minutes as many in the unit went to the lake side to rescue the child. |

Sydney CALLING...
Whether you're looking for outdoor adventure or cosmopolitan culture, Sydney's got it all. Climb to the top of the Harbour Bridge or take a skywalk on Sydney Tower to get a 360-degree view of the city, it's just awesome. We were looking forward to a visit to Sydney for quite some time. It was only when our son turned one, we could dare to realise our dream vacation at Sydney. A stroll through the Botanical Gardens, a tour of the Opera House, cuddling koalas in the Taronga Park Zoo and learning to surf at Bondi Beach - this 12-day trip was packed with adventure and fun. Visit to The Rocks, Sydney's historic district, was worthwhile for its quaint cafés and shopping. For everything from beaches to ballet, we enjoyed it all. Sydney is a tourist destination for all age groups. Our little son did sun and sand bathing every day. He enjoyed covered hot water pools the best. I enjoyed the pristine white sand on the shores the most, followed by shopping at malls at Perth. Perth is much like Chandigarh for its spacious. There are lots of activities going on at the malls to engage kids so that mothers can go shopping hassle free which is what I made most of. Most memorable was our son trying to fly with the birds at Darling harbour, Sydney! Twelve days were far too less to admire the beauty of the city but the memories are ever lasting. (Sonia Sandhu, a homemaker from sector 16 Chandigarh shares memories from her fun packed trip to Australia) |
It’s a beautiful day It's a packed house on a hot sultry afternoon, kids as well as parents in tow, gazing from the show glass at the dolls that represent different countries. Chinese dolls with elaborate hairdo, Austrian ones dressed in heavy woollens, Italians dressed in elaborate gowns and Indian ones that mark our resplendent culture are housed together in the International Doll Museum-23. Kids' favourite, this small museum receives the most foot fall in the month of June, when NRIs as well as international tourists pay a visit. "Many times, tourists from different countries bring a doll and with due permission, we install them here," shares Bhanu Sharma from the museum. The French corner is bigger now with six more members in the family; there are new additions in the US corner as well. Each of the doll group has a description on the wall that talks of the country they are from, major cities, languages, monetary unit, ethnicity as well as history. There is also a small description of origin of toys from Harappa civilisation to Barbie. Dolls from Japan, England, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Russia and Korea offer a slice from their culture. India's diverse culture echoes through different tribe dolls. A 'bride' corner brings forth the wedding attire from Jammu to Goa. "I like the Nagaland dolls the most," says an enchanted Shriya Garg (12). An aquarium, a model toy train and model presentations of popular stories - Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Alladin and His Wonderful lamp, Snow White and Seven dwarfs - attract kids equally. Attendants here are more than happy to describe the stories to inquisitive kids. Mythological corner has stories from different religions — Ramayana, Christ's birth, Shiva Ji-Jija Bai, Eklavya's sacrifice, Guru Teg Bahadur and more; the story of Gautam Buddha - how he moved as a prince from the palace on to the path for nirvana. Though some dolls look stained, overall they present a lovely picture of the world around in their own special way. The museum is open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm each day except on Mondays, national and public holidays. Souvenir shop
Prints of miniature paintings from Sobha Singh, descriptions from Bhagvata Purana, lives of Sikh Gurus, are available here for sale at a nominal price. So are the statues in metal and fibre glass. Prints on mythological themes are pretty popular with NRIs, who find them an excellent present to take back home. mona@tribunemail.com |

The year ahead
If your birthday is June 18...
Your birthday on the 18th day of June suggests that you are the one who can work well with a group, but still remain someone who needs to maintain individual identity. The number 9 people have completed the karmic circle and come off as people with loads of knowledge and experience. You are compassionate, tolerant, benevolent, charming and idealistic. The number 9 denotes mastery over all the challenges faced by the numbers preceding it. The month of September brings good things to these people and their lucky day is Monday. 1, 5, 6, 9, 18 and 27 are lucky dates for these people. Red, maroon, orange, and rose pink will bring you luck. In July, hidden fears, competitiveness will surface and can stir up trouble in your business relationships. This is a good time to assert your own needs and desires, to communicate to others what you really want. In the later part of the year between September and March, you may seesaw between decisive, forceful action and passive surrender. This tendency would make you much less effective than you would be at other times. Emotions and dreams are apt to be rather turbulent, filled with strange restlessness or discontent. Try not to demand too much of yourself at this time; you are prone to ailment. Take care of health in winters. Daniel Futterman June 18 , 1967, Silver Spring, Maryland ) is an American Academy Award-nominated actor and screenwriter. Although he is known for several high-profile acting roles, including Val Goldman in the film The Birdcage and Vincent Gray on the CBS television series Judging Amy, he is also a scriptwriter. He wrote the screenplay for the film Capote for which he received an Academy Award nomination and an Independent Spirit Award, Boston Society of Film Critics award and Los Angeles Film Critics Association award |
