563 Cadets pass out at glittering ceremony
Dehradun, June 11 A total of 563 Gentleman Cadets (GCs) passed out of the prestigious academy. This includes 17 other foreign Gentlemen Cadets comprising two each from Bhutan, Maldives, Mauritius, Mongolia and nine from Tajikistan. They will now join the Armies of their respective countries. The President, accompanied by Lt Gen Rajinder Singh Sujlana, Commandant of the academy, earlier inspected the guard of honour given by the GCs. She also awarded Sword of Honour to Gentleman Cadet Rohit Shekhar for emerging as overall best amongst the Passing-out Course. Ramkumar B, Raghav Swarup Gupta and Prashant Pandharinath Shinde were honoured with gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively, for standing first, second and third in the overall order of merit. Silver medal of technical graduate course went to Varun Sood. Silver medal of Technical Entry Scheme-17 course was bagged by Jee Thomas. |
Tossing of caps in air is back
Dehradun, June 11 The tradition was given a miss in the last passing-out parade here by young officers after taking the oath. According to this practice, the caps are tossed in the air by the officers as a mark of joy and happiness,
having completed a strenuous training. The custom was not followed in the last POP apparently after the top brass of the Army saw red over throwing of caps in the air as they fell on the ground which amounted to disrespect of the caps, the
officers feel. Even the officers at the academy before the administration of the oath to the officers had refused to the reporters any tossing of caps. |
Determination to excel won him Sword of Honour
Dehradun, June 11 “My aim was to win the Sword of Honour award. For this I had made up my mind to excel in everything during my training. Today it is a great feeling to have achieved my aim,” said the award-winner Shekhar, who is also an active sportsman. The Sword of Honour is the most coveted recognition that a Gentleman Cadet aspires to achieve and it is presented to the overall best cadet among the passing-out course. “It was a matter of pride and privilege spending nine years in military training,” he added. Shekhar, after passing out from the Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun, joined the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, following which he went for the one-year pre-commission training at the IMA. His father is an LIC commission agent while his mother is a housewife. Shekhar is a native of Deoghar district of Jharkhand. Sharing one of his experiences in the academy, he said, “The one incident I can never forget during my days at the IMA is that a leopard was captured in a cage right behind my room. I was amazed to know this.” For silver medal winner Raghav Swarup Gupta, it was his aim from early childhood to join the Army. His father, RS Gupta, District Magistrate of Dharamsala (Himachal Pradesh) said, “At two and a half years, he watched a programme of fuajis on TV and he got motivated to join the Army. “I got to know that moment that this was his only aim now.” |

Dehradun , June 11 “State from where less representation of cadets is there are being motivated to join. The talks are on with the people in order to motivate them,” the Army Chief said during a brief talk with the reporters today. Asked to comment on the Abbottabad-like strike by American commandos that resulted in th decimation of dreaded terrorist Osama bin Laden, he said “I have already said the Army is ready to deal with any sort of eventuality,” he said adding that the enthusiasm and zeal shown by the young officers today was a testimony to this. The Army Chief refused any comment on the issu of his date of birth saying, “it is a personal matter.” |
Efforts on to persuade Ramdev to end fast
Dehradun, June 11 A worried spiritual leader and The Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar rushed to meet Yoga Guru asserting that the entire country was concerned about his health. He, however, denied being sent by the Centre to mediate talks between Ramdev and the Union Government. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said he was hopeful that Ramdev will accept his plea and end his hunger strike. He disclosed that he has extended his stay in Dehradun for a day taking into account the seriousness linked to the issue. Expressing concern over deteriorating condition of Ramdev, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal, who too visited the hospital, said the Centre will be held totally responsible if the condition of Ramdev deteriorated. He even raised an apprehension that yoga guru could enter into comma while asserting that his life was precious for the country. Uttarakhand Agriculture Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, too, met yoga guru and expressed his concern over his health. District Dehradun unit of Communist Party of India (Marxist) too appealed the Yoga Guru to end his fast and sent a letter through the hospital administration. Meanwhile, in its evening health bulletin, it was disclosed that the health conditions of Baba Ramdev were showing signs of improvement. Vijay Dhasmana, a hospital spokesman, said the hospital staff was regularly monitoring Ramdev’s health. |
